Pentagenarians & Beyond: WkB 6/2

Hi Everyone,

Today was a rest day. I had an adjustment and a massage this morning, I'm feeling kind of tired so I'm hoping to sleep good tonight. The past 2 nights have just been one long hot flash :eek: with very little sleep. At least the cats are happy since I'm feeding them at 3 am now

Deb-the agility trial sounds like fun. Hope you have a nice weekend for it!

Garance-I hate those tags too! They drive me nuts!

Lori-I really liked medicine ball abs, but I am feeling it today! I've been avoiding doing ab work for years. I felt like I was doing enough with all of my other training, but I'm going to try to stick with it and do 3 core workouts a week.

Hi to Valerie and Josie!

Good night,

Judy

Good morning,

Some lightning and thunder early this morning, however no rain yet.

Garance, glad you are happy with what you have had done so far on the legs, but sorry you need to do another treatment..hopefully this will be the last. I hate tags in clothes too, especially at the neckline...irritating.

Lori, I fast forwarded the "rest" times in meso 3. It seems like it takes forever...I would make it about 30+ seconds in between..I don't remember what Cathe's actually were...I think longer than a minute even..I think John and I are on separate Amazon accounts...bummer...maybe I can add John to mine or vice versa and get it that way.

Judy, you're starting to sleep on my schedule....up at 3:00am...I have been known to do workouts at 3:30....ugh...With all you already do, you can fit 3 core workouts in a week?

Hi Josie!

Working only a half day today and off tomorrow. Have to help set up at the arena this afternoon, and get Keegan's crate set up etc for the big 2 days of showing him. Wish me luck....that I get that same dog that I showed in April!

Have a great day!

Good Morning,

This morning I did a 90 minute Spinerval ride. I just felt like riding and I had some extra time that I probably won't have over the next couple of days. I'm feeling a little bit of stress from the menopause issues and also things are deteriorating a little with my FIL :( I'm expecting to spend quite a bit of time at his house this weekend. One of my cats has some health issues too (FIV+) and his last blood tests indicate possible kidney disease :(

I tend to do a lot of cardio when I'm stressed. Now that I have STS (it arrived yesterday :D) I really want to try to switch my focus to strength training. I have some work to do with the 1 rep maxs and getting equipment in place before I start my first round of STS.

Deb-last night wasn't much better-I went to bed at 11, but was up at least 3 times. I need to go to bed earlier and get up earlier, maybe I can at least get back into a better sleep pattern if I try that. Also, I have to cut my caffeine down more. I have cut back quite a lot the past year, but it's probably still too high.
I think I can get the core workouts in if I decrease my cardio time by the same amount.

On my way to work now, will check back later.

Hope everyone has a good day!

Judy

Good afternoon all!

No run this morning. Chester decided to wake us up at 3:15am so I slept off and on at that point. Guess we are all lacking sleep.

I did bring my workout out stuff to work and plan to do HiiT pyramid and the HiiT HI and Low parts of the Intensity workout. Should be about a 45 min workout. Then tonight I am planning on Chesters walk.

I do do some core work I am just not consistent at all. The only core workout I seemed to like was the p90x ab ripper. Perhaps I should pull that one out and do it a couple times a week.

Deb...Good luck with Keegan!

Garance ...hope you are feeling well. I watched 1/2 of GoT last night and then stopped. did not want to go to bed with all that on my mind!

Josie...I am putting my Insanity DVD's in my bag right now so I will have them this weekend.

Hi to Valerie!

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did STS disk 24 (43 min.). So next week is a week off between meso 2 and meso 3. I think I really need it because my arms are sore. I also took Max for a good walk last night.

Deb, I hope Keegan struts his stuff for you.

Lori, I vaguely remember the rest periods being very long, too. I'm not too impatient, but then I'm retired, so it's not like I'm trying to fit workouts into a busy schedule. I did have some weird dreams after watching that episode of GOT. I think, though, that I might watch it again before the finale this Sunday. We'll see. I remember being horrified when Eddard was beheaded. I don't know why Martin insists on doing these awful things to favorite characters. I read somewhere because this is a Song of Fire and Ice that things will finally bring Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen together in the final books.

Judy, are you sure you don't want to take some HRT to help with the hot flashes? I took Loestrin and it really seemed to help.

Hi all, I'm back.. I didn't read this thread yet, will do tomorrow so can't comment on anything . we had a great trip and accumulated a LOT of activity points with plenty of assorted mt biking and hiking over 3 days. the 4th day just an easy ride looking at birds and flowers, and a drive home with time to clean most things up. Tired and sore! lovely weather, best time of year on the sunny dry east side of the mountains. still too snowy up high, so a few weeks before we go back.

I looked enough to see that I'm not the only one with a new grill this year. we used to have one, and one year it died and we didn't replace so its been quite a while. I am checking the weber website for assistance but any other good resources? I will be grilling vegies. fruit, chicken, and possibly some fish..... not sure about that yet. we got the small weber one since it will seldom be more than the two of us. I remember from the old one that the grates were hard to keep clean and food used to stick. I'm not a real skilled grill person.

Judy... a lot of people lose ability to metabolize caffeine as they get older.... so join the club. I have a little caffeine in my coffee at breakfast but that's it. we use decafe soda, no chocolate anything late either. decaf tea. I used to drink coffee all day without an issue but no more. I go to bed quite early and get up early. I found that if I miss sleep for some reason, I can't sleep longer in the morning to make it up. I did HRT for several years. it was truly awful and I don't think I could have survived without it. It was the only time in my life that I sweat... I'd be dripping wet and on fire one minute, and then bone chillingly, shaking cold the next. I'd cycle back and forth whenever I tried to sleep and in a month, after a car accident that was my fault, I said 'enough". Bring on the drugs. I was able to take a fairly low dose but stayed on for many years. do what you need to do, don't be a martyr.

I've not taken anything for menopause yet, and have been trying to get through it naturally. I don't mind the hot flashes during the day so much, but the sleep issue is the worst. I went for 10 months without a period then started back up this past January. I really thought I was going to be done with everything early before that happened. :( If this goes on much longer I will probably try hrt.

Judy

Hi all!

Well home from work and no walking chester. What was I thinking doing 45 min of HiiT less than 24hrs after an intense heavy weight leg workout! Wow they still feel like rubber. Need to rest these up!

Judy...I am going to be 52 and completely understand what you are going through. About 6 months ago I started using Phyto B herbal supplement. Recommened by a few people here on Cathe's forums. It is doing wonders for me. I sleep through the night and no more night sweats. I still have some hot flashes but nothing like before. I buy them on amazon so check them out and read the reviews. Perhaps these will help you too.

Valerie....your vacation sounded great! Welcome back!

Chat with you all tomorrow!

Lori

Welcome back Valerie, your trip sounds awesome! DH and I need to do something like that this summer.

Lori-Thanks for the tip, I'll look for those on Amazon.

Garance-I'll ask my Dr. about Loestrin if things haven't gotten any better by my annual appt. in December.

Hi to Deb & Josie!

Good night,

Judy

Good morning,

Not sure what I will do this morning before the trial...maybe just a treadmill workout, or KCM...at least it's not raining today...

Valerie, welcome back! Nice vaction. you are right on about the caffine and aging...I used to work second shift (4-midnight) would drink full cafe coffee all night, leave work at midnight, I lived about a mile from work, get home and be asleep by 12:30...no problems. Not now...I would be up all night for sure.

Garance, my hope is that Keegan does as well as last time, and John is able to get it with the iPad....he wasn;t there the last time. He took a half day off today to come and watch. Fingers crossed that he doesn't pull one of his antics that he is known for...LOL..

Judy, I tried a few different things to relieve the menopause stuff...I used to take something that has soy in it I think, with vitamin E...but now soy and anything related to it is a big "no, no" so not sure what is the "thing" to take nowadays. My cousin has had good luck with black cohash (sp?)...she said it works to minimize hot flashes. I never had to take any prescription HRT, and as for sleeping, I don't think anything will help me there...maybe retirement LOL..I have not totally given up caffine, and think that this would be the first step for the sleep issues..I try not to have any after 12 noon...

Lori, that supplement sounds interesting....I will mention it to my cousin and a co-worker that is getting hot flashes at work all the time...

Will check back later....have a great day!

I was 47 when menopause hit, and it hit with a vengeance. normal one month, beyond miserable the next. my doc wanted me to wait 6 months before doing HRT but after about a month I called back and said I could not live 6 months like this. I was OK and mostly unbothered during the day ..... until I tried to sleep. then the flashing and chills went nonstop. back and forth all night. soaking dripping wet and then so cold I was shaking. and then back to sweating again. I had to sleep elsewhere because DH could not get any rest with me going back and forth. I had this very weird sensation that my legs and feet felt like they were rubber coated ( like I had on a wetsuit) and when they rubbed together it felt like it was someone else, not part of my body. I read about in a text somewhere so it was not imaginary.

I tried a variety of herbal supplements and also soy (big at the time) but nothing made one iota of difference. after a month I was so exhausted after only snippets of sleep that I would have done anything, absolutely anything for relief.
I'm not a whimp about unpleasant things, and never planned to take HRT. I thought I'd be able to "ignore" the symptoms, or over ride them with willpower. I thought people complaining were "drama queens". Hello, welcome to reality! I had relief within less than 24 hours when I started HRT and I took it for a long time, on WAY reduced dosage. the memory of the symptoms was so strong that I was terrified to stop taking it. I never take meds unnecessarily but for me, HRT was a lifesaver.

so do what you need to do to get through it. the same thing doesn't work for everyone.

Hilarious pic of chester... the swan looks real, no wonder he was fooled.

Hi Ladies,

Took the day off yesterday to go and get my bone density test. I woke up with a sore throat and a runny nose yesterday, but today I feel much better. I took a mega doze of e-emergency’s and alka setzer plus and it seems to have worked. I will be running tomorrow and then going to greet the Aids Life Cycle riders come in. I can’t wait to do it again next year.

Judy, I did not take anything while I was going through menopause. My workouts and being in shape helped a great deal I did have some sleepless nights and the hot flashes, but it was manageable. I did have to send my suits to the cleaners more often ;). Regarding coffee, I have a 16 oz cup in the morning and that is it, otherwise I will not be able to sleep at night.

Valerie, welcome back! Glad that you had good weather this time.

Hi to Deb, Garance and Lori!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did All Out Low Impact Hiit, premix 1 with core 1 (49:22).

I definitely had to do something about hot flashes because it was awful to be standing up in a lecture hall and suddenly start feeling the sweat and flushed face. I had night sweats too, but at least it was not a public event. DH said it was not fun sleeping with me because I was constantly flinging the covers off and on. Ugh! Do not want to go back to those days. I also had a very large fibroid that caused excessive bleeding and eventually I had a hysterectomy by laparoscopy (just the uterus) which solved that problem. I didn't finish menopause, though, until I was 60. I think if you have children you both start and end later. Like Josie, I don't have any caffeine after noon. I do have a big strong cup in the morning with my breakfast, though. I tried all of those herbal remedies initially and they were next to useless in my experience. I think everyone is different, Judy, so you will have to do what seems to work best for you.

That sounds like a great vacation, Valerie.

Deb, do you think you will be able to post the video for us to see? I'm thrilled with how easy it is to send photographs from my Ipad. Would love to see Keegan in action--even if he screws up.

Busy weekend--a party to celebrate one of my niece's graduation from Colby on Saturday and a going away party for a colleague who is leaving to be president of Dickinson college on Sunday. I hope it doesn't rain all weekend and spoil the fun.

Hi ladies...

No run this morning. Did hard strikes at lunch and 20 mins of heavy bag after work.

Tons of rain here today and will be tomorrow too so no walking Chester. :(. Glad you all enjoyed his picture. He does have such a personality. More so than any other dog I have owned.

I am so glad the herbal pills are working for me and feel like a new woman. Like you ladies I had horrible night sweats and hot flashes throughout the day. So far so good.

Garance..how are you feeling. Seems like all is well? Good for you doing All Out.

Josie..glad your sore throat was short lived. I have been sitting next to a girl that has been coughing and gaging the past few days. I am praying that I do not get sick!!!! What a wonderful thing to do greeting the cycle riders.

Good night ladies!

Hi Everyone,

This morning I did X-Train Chest, Back & Shoulders. Tomorrow morning I'm planning on doing Ride and a core workout.

Thanks for the suggestions and support on menopause. After reading them over, I am realizing the first thing I need to do is decrease my caffeine intake and not have any in the afternoon. I've been having a little coffee and/or a package of "Extreme Sport Beans", jelly beans with caffeine  Today I didn't have any caffeine after 1 pm, and I'm dropping the caffeinated jelly beans for the time being.

Valerie-I haven't had symptoms that bad yet, but close. I had night sweats in my late 30's, but fortunately they didn't last long. One thing I remember, I was in a meeting at work, I was probably 38 or 39, and I just started sweating like crazy and was really hot. I wasn't sick, so it must have been a hot flash. Kind of embarrassing as I recall. I didn't have them again until a couple of years ago.
The sleep problem started to get worse when I was 48. I've had the weird sensations too, I think they are symptoms of low estrogen.

Josie-I think exercising really helps me too. I really hope I don't have to take anything, but will have to see. I think I need to train for a marathon again!

Garance-I'm sorry about the fibroid, I had a friend that had the same procedure a few years ago.

Deb-I'd love to see the video too!

Lori-I looked on Amazon and couldn't find phyto-b. I did find something called i-cool that sounded like it might work.

Good night, hope you have a great weekend,

Judy

Good morning,

I have a few minutes before I have to leave for the trial again. I am working it this morning, then showing Keegan again this afternoon.

For anyone interested, here is a You Tube video of Keegan's run yesterday..he had some issues, which we lost points on, but all and all he did ok and he qualified!! :D:D..2 "legs" down, 1 to go towards his first title in Agility...hopefully he will get the third leg today...

Hope this works! Back later...

deb, thanks for posting... I was clueless about what kind of stuff you did with the doggies but now I see! how cool! I will try to send a link to my cousin, the one who has a fox also.. but not well behaved

Thanks for the video Deb, Keegan did an awesome job!

That looks like a workout for the dog and the handler!

Good luck today:)

Judy

Hi Deb--

Thanks for the video. What a little speedster! Loved it. Makes me want to try to do something like that with Max.
