Pentagenarians &Beyond:Week Beginning 11/24

Good morning,

I hope everyone had a nice day yesterday, spending it with family and friends. We had a great day.

Josie, have fun watching the GKD's!

Not sure what we are going to do today, we still have to put the house back together, take all the tables and chairs back to the basement etc. I have 3 days to work on this though so I am not in a hurry!

Anyone shopping today? I try to steer clear of any stores on Black Friday, way too much confusion for me and not worth any bargain that you may get.

Take care!

Good morning ladies!

Knowing all to well that I would pretty much eat everything I did Flextrain yesterday morning along with LLA chair with bands. I like combining these. Then chester and I went for a 2.5 mile walk. Sad to say though with all consumption I should have done Flextrain twice!!!

Deb...I feel for you about putting the house back together. It is worth it though :)

No shopping for me. I stay away from everything on Black Friday.

Judy...love your kitties!

Squat rack was delivered yesterday and I have it all set up. I think I am going to love it. Going to try out one of the STS routines today. Then walk chester and organize my wash room. This is my day for today.

Have a great day all!

Good Morning!

No shopping for me today either. We will probably get groceries later, but I won't go near any other store. I've never been one to shop on Black Friday. I went with some friends a few years ago and it was a nightmare.

Yesterday we just stayed close to home and I did a 45 minute Spinerval. The Spinerval Challenge starts Monday:

Spinervals 32-Day Challenge - 2013 Edition (FREE!)

I'm going to start it and do as much as I can, but I also want to maintain my strength and core training so I might have to cut back on some of the longer rides that are scheduled. I know I can do 2-3 hour rides but not sure about 4-5 hour rides this year.

Lori-I bet you can't wait to use your squat rack!

Judy

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

I did All-Out Low Impact Hiit + Core 1 yesterday (49:33) and FlexTrain today (56 min.).

We had a lovely Thanksgiving with our sons and friends. I didn't eat too much, but it was all so rich I'm sure there were a lot of calories anyway. The pumpkin flan was really good. I will definitely make that again.

Lori, I really hope people don't stay away from 12 Years a Slave because they are worried about it being too depressing. It's just a beautiful film and so worth the time. Next for me is Catching Fire--probably next week.

No shopping for me either. I prefer shopping online anyway, although tomorrow is small business Saturday and I feel like I should see if there is something local I can look for. DH wants a boot jack and a rotisserie for our Weber grill. His customers keep telling him how his chickens are so great on a rotisserie. My sons, on the other hand, are headed up to the Manchester outlets.

Deb, I know what you mean about putting things away. Champagne flutes, the good china, the good silver, etc. I did a lot this morning, but there is another load in the dishwasher.

I wouldn't go NEAR a mall today, or actually this entire weekend. I also prefer online shopping. somehow the "fun and bargain hunting" etc....it's completely lost on me. I'll happily pay a little more not to suffer through the rushing, aggravation, and crowds. I guess I liked shopping when I was much younger but now it's just a tedious chore. I get what I need, and get out.

yesterday I did a treadmill warmup, then flextrain ch,sh, back, plus core 1. I got a little sore from it, proof that I've been slacking off too much. we are chopping wood today so anything that was sore will be more so by tomorrow. DH bought a new chainsaw for himself for Christmas and is cutting down some trees for next years firewood.

Our dinner went very well last night. I do turkey once a year and I'm always surprised at the mess it makes, and how much extra stuff needs to be brought out and cleaned, and then all put away again. and this was only for two other people. I can't imagine doing this for 19! I didn't overeat but did have more wine than usual and dessert.

One of the big conversation topics last night was about income inequity in this country and about how much worse it's become. know Robert Reich has a documentary coming out soon about this. I am not sure who's the source of this particular link but take a look if you want to be surprised and disappointed.

Good morning,

Nice day yesterday, John and I went out for Mexican food for lunch. We knew we would probably have turkey leftovers for dinner so decided to do something completely different for lunch. I did end up going to Target for a the gift for the Boys & Girls club giving tree that we set up at work. The store was not so bad, once you got into it. The major street that it was on was bumper to bumper crawling traffic. Unbelievable

Lori, have fun with the squat rack! It really makes using a barbell so much more pleasant.

Judy, that spinervals rotation is amazing! what do you watch/listen to while spinning? Yes, also love the kittie pic! They seem to like each other a lot.

Valerie, I didn't realize you had purchased FlexTrain. How do you like it so far?

Garance, we have all "good" plates, silver etc put away, just need to put the furniture in the living room back in order. It will only be a 10 minute job at most. Have you (or anyone) watched the series "Damages" with Glen Close? I just finished season 1 and have some questions. It is amazing but a very complicated plot.

Hi to Josie!

Taking the Saab to the storage place this morning, so I will get my garage back, no more brushing snow off in the morning!

Take care, and enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Good morning ladies!

Love my squat rack. I did the first routine of the four. The time in-between exercises was a bit long for me so I cut it down a bit. I get the reason behind it but was anxious to continue. :). I then followed up with a 35 minute premix from cycle max then walked chester 3 miles. I will NOT be doing any leg workout today!

Lynda...I agree with you about 12 years a slave. I have told everyone they need to see it. Amazing movie. Catching Fire will be next week for me too. Finished the book yesterday. Glad I reread it. Enjoyed it as much as the 1st time. I am now starting with Killing Jesus. I read Bill O'Reilly's other 2 and was fascinated with them. Hoping I like this one as much.

Valerie....yes...how did you like Flex Train? One of my favorites of the series. Was nice a nice break for me with going somewhere for Thanksgiving. Loved having nothing to clean up. Wouldn't want to do this every year but did enjoy it this time. I do miss leftovers though.

Good for you Deb with the Mexican food. My brother and his wife are visiting tomorrow and my son wants chinese food. We will see.

Judy...I now get why you work your core as hard as you do. Makes sense with those long rides!

I have an update on my brother from Arizona....he met with his surgeon and they plan to operate early January. The tumor is slow growing so I guess no urgent need to operate before the holiday. They will need to remove his spleen and then take the tumor with a portion of his pancreas. A biopsy will be down at this time. The wait continues. I am planning to visit mid January once he has his surgery and feels like company. All and all I am very optimistic with everything.

Have a great day ladies!! Hi to Josie!

Apparently you all have mentioned Flextrain so many times that my brain assumed I must have too! I wrote that instead of Xtrain. no, I didn't buy flextrain. maybe I should have.

really fairly sore this morning... we split close to a cord of wood yesterday and stacked it. it is a terrific upper body workout but I was already sore from the day before. upper body soreness is not as bad as lower body you're not reminded with every step... but I am definitely sore.

I swear I posted a link yesterday... no where to be seen. I'll try again after posting this. it's about income inequality in this country, showing what most people believe exists (i.e. the rich are richer than most of us) and what truly exists. we've had a rousing debate locally ( and a vote)about raising minimum wage for airport area workers to $15/hr. I was not a supporter as I was also not supporting fast food worker wage raises but I keep thinking about it. something is wrong with the system when the imbalance is so great, and getting worse.

judy the kitty pic is so cute!

Lynda, could you post where you got the pumpkin flan recipe? I looked on foodnetwork and there were several listed but I'd like to try a good one and not experiment trying to find one. I like pumpkin pie but the diet killer is piecrust.

Good Morning,

It sounds like everyone had a good Thanksgiving:)

Last night I ordered the 3 cycle DVD package and Pyramids Upper/Lower Body. Pyramids is the last Cathe Weight DVD on my wishlist so I was happy to see it as a deal of the day. Even though I already have "Ride" as a download, I'll be glad to get the DVD as it will have the premixes and I am really happy to get Pedal Power.

Deb-I'm starting to get mentally prepared for the challenge and looking forward to it. I have almost all of the Spinerval DVDs so I usually do the one that is on the schedule for that day.

Lori-the core work has helped, both with my running and cycling. I used to have low back problems which have pretty much disappeared since I started doing Cathe's core routines regularly.
I'll pray that your brother's surgery goes very well.

I've come up with a rotation so that I can keep up with my core/strength training. I'm going to do a full body dvd + core work 2 to 3 days a week during December. Then I think I will be ready to start STS in early January. I'm also going to be looking for a used squat rack.

Hi to Lynda, Josie & Valerie!

Hope everyone has a good weekend

Judy

Hi Ladies,

Dinner went well and i had a lot of help cleaning up. My SIL's and my DM helped me.
I need to start packing for my trip to Fresno, I leave tomorrow. I can't wait to see my peanuts!

Judy, sounds like you are ready for the challenge :)

Lori, I hope everything goes well with your brother, I will keep him and your family in my prayers.

Hi to Deb, Valerie and Garance!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

Housemax for me this morning. My sons left about noon, so I had to work around them. My older boy is off to China, but I will see the younger one at Christmas.

Valerie, your site is excellent. I am keenly aware of the income inequality, probably from watching Morning Joe, where the problem comes up at least once a week. I think raising the minimum wage makes sense if it also means that people made enough to support themselves. Currently, we are subsidizing corporations like Wal-Mart that pay only the minimum wage, because their workers need food stamps. It's crazy.

The pumpkin flan recipe is at

LIVE with Kelly and Michael - Recipes

Lori, I hope the operation goes well for your brother.

Deb, I watched all of Damages and there are complicated plot twists in all of the seasons. Pretty good, although it's so noir, so dark, that I had a hard time finding characters I really liked. I also felt frustrated because hardly anything made it to court.

Have fun with your peanuts, Josie!

Thanks Lynda, getting away from a crust for saving calories and love pumpkin flavor. all the recipes I looked up are quite similar, but tried and true is the best recommendation.

I am forgetting if I said, but Morning Joe apparently doesn't run on out west. wish it did. I don't have a morning show to watch here. we have had fast food employees marching and demanding higher wages. we had the Boeing machinists turn down a contract recently that had some big take-aways in it.... and now Boeing is actively looking to take the jobs where wages/benefits are less, and all kinds of states are jumping into line to grab the chance. in a community near the airport... apparently passed a bill increasing the minimum wage to $15/hr. recount likely. I used to think FF workers were entry level jobs and should not be demanding more. but I'm starting to not be so sure anymore.

We also watched Damages but watched it season by season as it was released over several years. It was a good series, not "wonderful" but definitely watchable. no one to "like" very much. they did flashback scenes that sometimes seemed more confusing than anything. I enjoyed it. If I don't like something, I don't bother completing a full season. I'll watch one or at most 2 disks, depending on how many episodes are involved. sometimes series start a little crazy, and settle down after a few episodes and get interesting. I think Ted Danson was in the first seasons, saw it maybe 5 yrs ago. I don't remember enough to answer questions.
