Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 9/5

Thursday

Good morning,

No workout today, :(..very tired for some reason. I am stressing about the obedience trial and whether or not I have enough workers. I have volunteers from the local Charter High School, finally got the names from the guidance councelor yesterday...whew..it's getting down to the wire. I can't wait for the weekend to be over, or at least for the trial to be over on Sunday afternoon. I am taking off Monday, just to relax.

Valerie, I do the same thing, I get to the point where I can do 8-10 push ups on my toes, then don't do them for a while and I am back doing maybe 3 or 4, and have to drop to my knees. I always say I am going to do as many as I can after doing the treadmill but I forget. I bet this last power outage was the second or third in 27 years that we have been in this house. What happened was a lightening strike on the transformer that is for this neighborhood. All the houses were out. No way am I using the garage door without an opener!

Josie, good job on the workout and the weight loss!:D

Garance, aaahhh....retirement.....so close for you. I have two years...I think November of 2012.

Hi to Cathy& Joan,

take care,

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did P-57 (57 min.).

Very grey and cool here today--only in the 60s. I hope we get some Indian summer before the November darkness and drizzle.

Deb, so maybe we will really be retiring about the same time, since I am still working 2011-12 with one semester on, and one a paid leave. I'm beginning to feel stressed about this trip--trying to decide what to bring, what to wear, how much money, my little bag of beauty stuff. Blech! I no longer enjoy travelling at all--or, at least, by air, which has turned into a real hassle for everyone. It took me ages this morning to find my plug-converter for my hairdryer to use in England.

Tomorrow is my first day of teaching, two classes consecutively from 1:10-2:25 and then 2:35-3:50. I really like this because it means I teach only two days per week.

Back to work here.

did a 25 mile ride this am, 2 hours. I wore my HRM (for fun) today. am at 120-125 most of the time. I think it's the 2 hours of constant pace that seems to benefit so much. even tho I haven't been using the treadmill as often, I haven't lost any fitness there. I would not spend a constant 2 hours on the treadmill happily, but on the bike, it's great. raining a bit this morning, so we got pretty wet. spray from the rear tire gets your back and shorts pretty wet. cool and showery, around 60. we officially never had much of a summer here, cause it's turning to fall, leaves coming down, fog, and it looks like the la nina weather pattern is solidly in place, the opposite of last winter. I will probably be complaining about power outs. some years we have dozens. most no more than a few hours but a few lasted several days. when we get snow, that's the real killer.

Deb, last time I did GS chest triceps I did almost all the pushups on my toes. this time, maybe half. think I could have done more but I had a couple sore spots from back/biceps and decided to go easier.

Yeah, Lynda, travel ( flying) is no fun anymore. I feel like part of a livestock herd being taken to market. crowded, lines, rude people, pay for everything, no perks, nothing pleasant about it at all anymore. I used to fly for business, many times several times a week, and it was usually pleasant. no way would I go back to that with conditions like they are now. I used to have to carry tons of equipment with me, and no way would that get on a plane these days.

I have nothing but good things to say about retirement. It's so pleasant ... although I missed my job for a long time after I got laid off. it will be better when DH is retired too, and then we will be freer to do more driving type travel. his part time status didn't change our options as much as we'd hoped.

TGIF!

Hey gang,

TGIF for sure! Busy weekend ahead, the trial is here and I am coordinating the workers...which includes about 12 high school kids .. I think that is a great thing for the high school to do. Now if they just show up...

Garance, I would be stressing for sure if I was packing to go to England.. I assume it's cool there now? Are you checking the weather on line? Do you need a lot of work type clothes, and then other type? that is the hard part of travelling for work. You need business things, then clothes to use for non-business stuff and it gets crazy.

Valerie, ok..how many calories did you burn on that ride? Hey, don't rub it in about retirement to all of us working stiffs here LOL:D. I am so envious.

Anyone have plans for the weekend?

Hi to Josie, Joan, and Cathy!

Deb, I don't know the calorie burn. my HRM just gives heart rate. I like it cause it's 2 hrs straight of cardio with little impact and changing scenery. we stop halfway point to use the bathroom and drink up, but only for 5 minutes.
you're supposed to pedal about 80 revolutions per minute. so 80 x 60 minutes makes 4800 reps in an hour, 2 hours close to 10,000. so high frequency, low impact. we both agreed to try to do this at least once a week thru the winter, as long as it's safe. Lots of people ride most of the year here. no snow/ice or hard rain. skinny tires and ice do not go together. you flat fall in a microsecond! hard rain makes brakes way less effective too. May need to put fenders on , my back got quite wet yesterday.

DH and I are on vacation the next 2 weeks. not sure where we're going. montana and southern BC or california. we'll compare weather forecasts. It's cloudy & gray here and we had a crummy summer so need some sunny weather.

Lynda, I did a trip to England, Ireland, Scotland a long time ago, my only international travel. 3 weeks, a tour with work friends. Lost a few pounds cause I didn't care much for the food. I remember my converter plug didn't work, back when hair dryers were so important. Hope yours works! it was cool and damp, as expected. My trip was for fun no work, so packing wasn't a problem. Have a wonderful trip.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did 4 Fast Miles with Leslie (51 min.).

Did my introductory classes this afternoon. The semester has officially begun.

Yesterday one of DH's customers came up to the farm with his 3-year-old boy who was so excited about the day-old chicks. They really are cute little puffballs. Not so cute when they feather out.

Yes, I have been checking the Cambridge UK weather. It looks like temps in the high 60s and probably showers at least one of the days I am there.

This weekend no plans of any note--just Housemax and class prep and trip prep.

Hi Ladies,

I will try to get up early and do my spinning before my weight training tomorrow. On Sunday I plan to get on my bike and try to do 25 miles or more if I feel I can do it after the 25 miles.

Tomorrow I will be attending my neighbor’s funeral and I have to go to an opening of a gallery with my DH in the evening and I don't know if I will be up to it. I know that it is going to be a very emotional service.

Garance, have a great trip! I also don't like to travel much anymore due to all the waste of time at the airport. It take the fun out of traveling.

Deb, good luck on your trial and I hope that all the volunteers show up.

Valerie, have a great vacation!
