Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 9/1

Good morning!

Had a nice relaxing day with Bob. Light house work then we decided to have a last pool weekend in our little pool. The sun was warm, but the water was a little chilly. We got our pool floats and floated for a couple of hours listening to music and yes a couple of cocktails were involved! We are planning the same today (minus the cocktails). In the evening we had a fire on the outside patio and brought out our screened patio TV and watched Dumbo. Tonight we are watching Rocketman. We both needed this weekend.

I had a great workout yesterday. (Did not workout Friday, 3 rest days last week!) I did a Bounce Society (BS) workout that was just over an hour. Intermediate/advanced with weight intervals. I signed on for a 7 day free trial. I may switch between BS and Lekft. I stream thru VHX and you can easily pause a membership for a month and not be charged. I also did a BBS 10 min hiit with jumprope to finish off. Trying to make up the 3 rest days! I may do another BS workout today, free trial ends tomorrow. I certainly did not plan the free trial on a good week. Oh well.

Deb...oh I feel for you with what you went thru!! Such a mess. When it happened to us we threw out so much stuff. Years later we are looking for certain items and thinking they were trashed. We have a sump pump but do not know what a bubbler is. We have a pvc pipe that connects to where the sumppump exits the house and buried a couple of inches in the ground. Pipes extends 50 or so feet from the house and drains there. We also installed a back up battery, in case we lose power. I should revisit all this to make sure everything is in working order.

Valerie...hope the camper is all good now. Glad joints are ok. RA is so painful. Great 26m ride the other day. That is awesome you had duct tape! Never thought to bring a little, just in case. It is so versatile!!! I bet the hiker was impressed.

Carolyn...B&G’s used to be a favorite of mine and my go to for a tough lower workout. Good for you it’s a hard one. Always nice connecting with friends from the past. You’ll enjoy your visit when it happens. Dorian is going to be awful for the Bahamas. So very sad. Listening this morning it sounds like east coast will be spared. Hoping it stays this way. When are the new Cathe workouts shipping?

Diane Sue...did I miss your Birthday? Hope it was a good one. When do you get your results? Hoping soon so they can figure this out for you. Been thinking about you. Amazing you do the workouts you do! You are one strong fit woman!!

Judy...did you like Kelly’s new workouts? They looked great. Are you going to continue HD now that the Summer Season is winding down? Crazy hours, when that is not what you signed up for.

Have a great day all!

Today is another rest day. No real holiday plans, but we are enjoying the weekend. Lori, lounging around the pool sounds like the perfect weekend activity for you. Have a wonderful day everyone.

good morning... yes, I proved to everyone that I am a girl scout, always ready with back up supplies. duct tape is part of my daypack and has been more useful than most other supplies. a little will fix so many things. DH and I split up extras. it could ruin an entire trip if something breaks and you have no way to fix.

we road rode this morning for 15 miles. decided not to drive to a further place. Im going to get a weight workout in later today.
Lori, the hiker was an older (65-70 ish) woman, not local. she said CA. I would not wear Teva sandals on a steep trail but that's her business. when that front top strap pulled out, there was no way to keep sandals attached. Im glad its not RA but OA is a problem too, and my hands and feet are the main target.
we are fortunate not to get tropical storms here. what a mess and what a hard thing to predict with any accuracy. sounds like a lovely pool day that you deserved.

No workout yesterday or today other than over an hour of PT exercises. I swear the PT really set off some pain my last visit. I spent three days icing and with the heating pad doing pretty much nothing more than I had to do. My husband took us to dinner last night so I wouldn't have to cook and then to lunch after church. He took me to lunch yesterday as well. I feel somewhat better today. I spent three nights up pacing and trying to find relief so hoping tonight is good. If it I experience much more of this I am going to try to work in the Arthritis doctor earlier than the 12th. I had two of the smaller grandchildren yesterday evening after we went to lunch and my husband fixed a couple of things at our church's school. I was not much help there other than hand off some nails and screws. We are going back tomorrow with spackle and maybe fix another item. I really want to make a trip to my grandson's school tomorrow to see the path I am to take to get to his building for drop off since it seems confusing. I will have him here starting later tomorrow evening. This is the 8 year old. His parents should be in Ireland today. I don't know if their itinerary is our times or times where they will be. Today was the 11 and 5 year old.
I have been watching physical therapy videos while doing my exercises. Learning a lot about unsafe exercise moves. Interesting that instructors do a lot of those moves routinely. Anyway, I may be doing modifying on some things for my back and shoulders for sure.

Lori, your weekend sounds nice and relaxing and something much needed. I liked the Dumbo movie. We watched the Aladdin one yesterday with the grandchildren. We purchased it off of Vudu. It was good too. I like the non animated versions. I did have a nice birthday that lasted for a few days LOL Early family birthday and my husband gave me my present early. I got to eat out several times for my birthday :) I am hoping that I get my results soon. I hope they call when I am not out on the road or at PT. I don't know why they take so long to get back to you after those tests.

Valerie, why would anyone where Teva sandals or any kind of sandals on walks like that anyway. I wear tennis shoes when I go outside and wander around on my daughter's land. You never know when you might run into a snake of something and it is just unsafe. We keep lots of duct tape with us all of the time. I have a huge wide roll of Flex Tape that we keep for leaks and the like. Temporary fix, but should work for many things. My husband swears by duct tape and WD40.

Carolyn, enjoy your weekend and rest days.

I did a stacked upper body premix later today. wanted to do core too, but out of time. still, with the ride earlier, that was enough.

diane sue I hope you get some decent information about neck and shoulder soon but wise to back off and not make things worse. I have no clue why anyone would wear Tevas. my ankles and feet are extremely loosely connected and smooth soled sandals would be death for me. sometimes I've seen people hiking in flip flops! I need ankle support and lug soles, but not too stiff soles. I assume this lady was old enough to wear something OK for her, even if I thought she was nuts. if a strap attachment rips out of the sole, there is no way to even keep it on your foot. this area has a bunch of less steep trails, but going to the water overlook its very steep and loose gravel. yes, duct tape if it moves when it shouldn't, WD40 if it doesn't move, and it should.

Good morning,

Yesterday I did LIVE Push Pull, 40 minutes, 211 calories. It rained a lot early this morning, and we were mopping up the basement at 4:00 am. We cannot get that job done soon enough!

Valerie, good job with the duct tape and that woman's sandal! Not sure if I mentioned it, but IKE ripped the zipper on the door of the soft-sided crate he and Kylee were in at the show last weekend, and one of our members had Gorilla tape, and proceeded to fix it with that. So glad she had it! IKE is hand stripped, not clipped. That, with a bath, drying etc takes about 2.5 hours. Kylee is clipped, she only takes about an hour. Love this comment; "duct tape if it moves when it shouldn't, WD40 if it doesn't move, and it should."...:)

Lori, that sounds like a wonderful way to spend a Saturday. :)

Judy, wow, 20,000 steps is amazing! I would be concerned about the chance of injury as well.

Carolyn, I hope you don't see much from the hurricane where you are. Enjoy the weekend!

Diane Sue, I hope you had a better night last night. When I had a PT exercise other me, I stopped doing it and let them know. They would change it to something else. I truly believe that one of the PT exercises for my hip, actually injured my knee. Yes, very frustrating waiting for test results.

Have a great rest of the weekend!

I had the flip side of the same issue, exercises for my knee caused bursitis in my hip. went away shortly after I stopped. we are all put together slightly differently so what works for one might not for the next person so always ready to modify. I want to get in a workout earlier today, guests later this afternoon for dinner. has to be early so they can get home before the weekend traffic gets crazy. DH and I do "staycations" for most holidays. traffic/ congestion too awful and frustrating to deal with.

Deb is there a specific clipping pattern used on fox terriers? no idea what the difference is between stripping and clipping. the terriers I've seen always look similar. when I was a kid I thought that was just how their hair grew. my aunt always had a fox terrier, and then my cousin followed. he and his wife had a psycho dog, their last one, had to have him put down. he was mean and uncontrollable. some good strong tape is so useful to have around. zippers are hard to fix. great when they work, but when they stop working its usually the end of the item.

This morning I did Strong and Sweaty Bootcamp. My time was 52 minutes with 321 calories burned. Average heart rate was 126 and maximum heart rate was 154.

Hurricane Dorian is very scary, but is not expected to impact us here away from the coast. In fact, our rain forecast is 0%. Apparently, there is so much energy in the hurricane that we are drier than usual outside of the storm band. Six counties along the Georgia coast have just been issued mandatory evacuation orders.

Diane Sue, I hope that the pain is better today. Are you able to communicate with your PT between sessions, maybe by email? I’m not surprised that the PT videos differ from some of the exercise instructors. I am somewhat skeptical of some trainers and their moves. I like to know about their training and experience before I follow their workouts.

Deb, nice job with Live Push and Pull. Just getting in a workout with your basement situation is an accomplishment.

Valerie, sometimes “staycations” are the best choice. I hope you enjoy your dinner with friends.

Hello to Lori and Judy.

Good morning. no workout yesterday even though I got to the exercise room more than once, but guests, phone calls, etc derailed the plan. going to road ride this morning shortly.

the horrible boating incident in CA. a friend of mine did a lot of scuba diving from boats like that. I saw the accommodations and got claustrophobic just from her pics. beautiful locations, but tiny little stacked bunk beds or hammocks. very very close quarters. I am very nervous on all boats and water. so terribly sad. all those people didn't have a chance.

My workout this morning was Lean Legs and Abs. It was 50 minutes and 194 calories burned. My average heart rate was 107 and maximum heart rate was 149. I am following Cathe’s September rotation which has several workouts that I like.

Valerie, that boating accident is horrible. I feel so bad for everyone involved.

Diane Sue, I hope all is well with you.

Hello to Deb, Lori, and Judy.

Quick check as I have to be to PT which is right around the corner in 11 minutes. They called this morning from the heart doctor and said he wanted me to come in to go over some things with me. So I got that scheduled for Friday between running my grandson to school which took me 37 minutes there and 40 coming back. I have to get him anywhere from 2:50 t0 5. Not going at 5 as there will be work traffic and the school is right off of the interstate. Shoulder, arm and neck are still painful. It hurt and I kept shaking my arm out while driving this morning. I will be back later. I skipped the weight moves yesterday on my PT home stuff.

Back from PT and need to go get my grandson. They are lightening up the shoulder exercises to some non weighted moves. She did some stuff with it to help hopefully make it a bit better. She gave me a paper to bring home and decide if I want to let her do dry needling on Thursday. For some reason I am just dragging today. Not a bit of energy. Maybe if I had done something I would feel better. I did laundry in between running in and out. I tried twice to lie down and get a cat nap, but it just is not working. Hopefully I can get to bed earlier tonight, but with a child around, who knows. When I went to get him up for school this morning the bath light was on upstairs, he had a bottle of water beside him, had opened the door and laid Gerties mat in the doorway where she was sleeping, and had the ipad lying on the floor by the bed. Wondering how much sleep he got!

Valerie, the family took the fifth wheel on a trip once when my husband was out of country. They thought the tank was full and so we had to walk some distance in rock to the public showers. I wore flip flops expecting to stand in the shower (which was nasty) and the strap broke. I ended up walking in rock barefoot since I was closer to the show as opposed to going back. Had to slide the bottom of the flip flop along the floor to get a shower and walk back in gravel. I would do my best not to wear something like that and repeat the experience. Then we find out after looking at the manual that they were not checking the tank properly and it was not full. I wondered how that could have been, myself. But my husband always took care of all of that and was meticulous about making sure it didn't get full.

Debbie, I really do think communicating with the therapist is a bit difficult at times to get through to them what exactly is bothering. They keep concentrating mainly on my neck, which has been a problem for years. I told the PT this today and that the shoulder pain started about 7 weeks ago and is still just as bad if not worse. I would not have even mentioned it to my doctor if it had not been so bad to begin with. So, today she went through tests and looking at my shoulder, spent time on the shoulder and found light moves for me to start with instead of what I was doing. She also mentioned that I should be concentrating a bit more on my shoulder area than I am. They just added a couple of moves last week that hits the shoulder more. I kept worrying that they could be causing damage instead of helping. Pups can be a bit destructive. Great idea to use some Gorilla tape. I also like Valerie's comment on the WD40 and duct tape and movement.

Carolyn, nice job on the workout. I am hoping maybe a bit of barre or cardio tomorrow with my PT since I won't be going anywhere other than the long drive to and from school twice. I need to clean.

valerie, I saw the news this morning about the boat fire. So very sad. I was sick to my stomach. They never had a chance.

Lori because my friend used to fly all over the world to scuba dive with her hubby. I was very alert when I first heard the story because that was the kind of thing she would have done. ( she passed a couple years ago) she loved diving. I loved seeing her pics but took one look at the living conditions and knew I could never ever do that. I don't think I'm claustrophobic but that was WAY beyond what I could do. besides, my ears won't equalize pressure no matter what, so I can't go more than 10 feet down in water. but I got to see all her beautiful pics of coral, fish, shells, beautiful national geographic level stuff. so I picked up on this story right away. being west coast, it got almost as much coverage as Dorian.

did a short 15 mile ride this morning, and busy busy the rest of the day.

Good morning,

No workout Tuesday, but I did get in over 10,000 steps. Nothing yet today, waiting for the plumber to come and go over the estimate for the job that we need done.

Valerie, that boating accident was just terrible. :(. I'm with you on staying home when there is a holiday weekend etc. Traffic and all venues are usually so crowded that it is no fun to be out there. Hand stripping is done with a stripping knife, where the dead layer of hair is removed. Clipping is what is generally using pet clippers. The results are completely different. Hand stripping is what is done for the fox terriers that are shown in the conformation ring ( think Westminster). We used to have Kylee stripped until she was attacked and they had to clip the hair to get to the wounds. It made sense to us at that time to just have her clipped from that point on . We were not able to fix the zipper on the crate, but have it taped both inside and out with the Gorilla tape so he at least cannot get out.

Carolyn, you are so lucky that the hurricane will not be affecting your area.

Diane Sue, I hope the change in PT exercise helps. What is dry needling?

Hi to Judy & Lori

Take care,

The dive boat incident will probably force boats to have better exits. everything is crammed together and narrow. sorry I am NOT a boat person. I have been on sailboats, and bigger boats, mostly in dock. get claustrophobic just looking at them. plus I get motion sick if not in sight of land. mostly I stay away from boats. Did not intend to discount the hurricane story what an awful mess! this has to be the slowest moving storm ever. with those islands having such little elevation above water, its not hard to imagine them being uninhabitable.

its been a long time since we tried to go somewhere on a holiday weekend, especially labor day. lines and crowds and heavy traffic. not worth the headache.

annual physical this morning so will check back later.

Today I did Rock’m Sock’m Kickboxing for 48 minutes and 375 calories burned. My average heart rate was 138 and maximum heart rate was 179. I wanted to add the Icy Core, but I ran out of time.

Waving hello to everyone and have a wonderful day.

Valerie, I know some people really love the diving. It would not be for me. I hope your physical went well.

Debbie, dry needling is sort of like acupuncture. PT's are trained to do it. It can help release tight muscles and speed healing. I read some on it last night. The paper they gave me says it is a valuable treatment for musculoskeletal related pain such as soft tissue and joint pain, as well as increase muscle performance. They place the needles in trigger points which are painful and tight nodules within muscle fibers.

Carolyn, nice work today.

Hi Everyone,

Sunday and yesterday I did KCM's Strong & Lean with the Bonus Extension. I've been doing the Bonus (5 minutes of bridges and core work) first, then the workout. This seems to be a good one for me to do before work. Today I did a 45 minute Peloton ride then did 15 minutes of easy cool down riding. My heart rate averaged 155 and my max was 174 during the ride. I just got the results of my blood work back. Everything was good, and my cholesterol is down to 172. That's the lowest it's been in over 10 years. My last test, in Sept. 2017 it was 201 and prior to that it had been quite a bit higher. I am very happy and so is my doctor.

Valerie-that boating accident was so horrible :( I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. I have never been comfortable with boating or anything like that so I stay away from boats too. I hope your physical went well.

Deb-Great job with all the steps! I agree about staying home on holiday weekends. Last year we went to Indiana to see Chris's family over Labor Day and it was crowded everywhere and traffic was pretty bad.

Carolyn-Great workouts this week! I plan on doing some of the September rotation workouts next week when I have 4 days off.

Diane Sue-I hope the dry needling helps and that the change in PT helps too. PT can be painful :( I am sorry you are having to go through this.

Hi to Lori!

Judy
