Good morning,

Well we got the puppy, ( Kylee), and I had a pretty sleepless night. Went to bed at 10, up at 1:15, 3:15 and 5:45. She is so darned cute though:

She is so little! This is a small statue we have in the garden, she pulled off the Welcome sign first thing, She's not afraid of anything

Oh Kylee is just darling! Looks like he & Keegan will get along well. What a fun time with a puppy. yeah, I'd put off things for a while. so cute but probably plenty of extra work and of course, play time.

That sounds like a good place to start riding if you haven't cycled. 10 miles on a bike really isn't much... nothing compared to a 10 mile walk... but any new activity takes getting used to. pretty soon that will barely feel like barely a warm up. Bikes aren't that expensive anymore... you can get a very decent bike for a few hundred dollars, and most shops will take trade ins if you find you enjoy it and want to upgrade. the other costs are helmets, a small pack to carry some extra clothes & tools, and a car rack. gloves and padded shorts are fine but not needed until you do more mileage. trails with pedestrians I strongly recommend a bell. people with ipods are oblivious and even little children respond to a bell and get out of the way. I wish I'd gotten one years ago, it works so well. and then you can shout 'thank you" and everyone is happy and no collisions.

Lynda, I for some unknown reason, didn't realize that was Max on your avatar. I guess checking in so often, I didn't look. sometimes things are so obvvious, I don't see them. He's shorter haired than the pictures I'd looked up, something which is probably better for an outside farm-sy dog. not a load of debris getting caught in his fur all the time. old neighbors had a cocker spaniel and we used to spend hours combing twigs etc out of his longer hair. A handsome guy and sounds like a wonderful disposition.

Exercise has been good. Friday I did yard max and then disk 31. saturday we did a hike with a friend and taught her how to use an ice axe. plenty of snow to practice on, lots of climbing up and sliding down for practice. so while it was probably only 5-6 miles RT, we went up and down a bunch on slippery snow. It's not melting. this is usually a good early season hike and it probably won't melt out at all. very strange year.

I don't remember if I've written about the troublesome fawn who keeps getting into the vegie garden. he doesn't eat anything but we can't figure how he's getting in. he was in there both thursday and saturday when we got back from the hike. just lying in the sun not eating anything. after thursdays incursion, I put up two extra metal fence grids to cover the area below the gates where I figured is how he gets in. but there he was again saturday. I go in and walk around behind him, he stands and watches me get really close, and then turns and runs ( down the path, no less) out the open gate like I've apparently trained him to do. this is quite the mystery.

Hi Deb, Valerie, and any later posters--

This morning I did Cardio Barre (55 min.).

Deb, Kylee is just plain adorable. How old is she? I wondered about the sleep situation last week, but maybe you can nap when she is napping, like a newborn. I know I brag about Max a lot, but he was already housetrained and crate-trained when we brought him home and we never had a night when he woke us up. He would have a final outdoor time at about 10, go to his crate and sleep through until morning. Now he either puts his wet nose in DH's face or stares at him, beginning at about 5:30, when he knows it's time for chores. I just sleep through this.

Valerie, my avatar is a puppy pic. Max is bigger now, and has a longer coat, and a gorgeous plume for a tail. He doesn't seem to shed very much, which I find very odd. English shepherds are related to Australian shepherds and border collies.

The ballet company yesterday was absolutely brilliant. We were ecstatic. A very rich programme, and talk about technique! One very funny number with three male dancers doing all of the super melodramatic moves from story ballets where they would compete with one another--who can leap higher, who can do forty pirouettes in a row, who can look more gallant gesturing. Very funny and so on target with the male dancers in the story ballets. Virtuoso. So, if you ever have the opportunity to see this small company (Troisieme Etage), don't hesitate.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend everyone!

Good morning,

Well I feel like I am back in the old days, getting up 3 times a night. It will all be worth it though.

Valerie, if you didn't open the gate, how would the fawn get out? maybe the same way he got in? Can he be jumping the fence?

Garance, how old was Max when you got him? At 10 weeks, their bladder isn't big enough to hold it for that long, so that is why I take her out every hour or two. At least she cries in the middle of the night, kind of telling me she doesn't want to go in her crate. She goes immediately when I put her down in the grass. I guess I will be taking a lot of naps this week. Unfortunately, we don't get any ballet companies here or close to go see. That ones sounds wonderful.

Hi to Josie, Joan & Cathy,

Take care,

Hi Deb, Valerie, and any other posters--

This morning I did Sweat Express II (57 min.).

Deb, Max was 3 mos. old when we picked him up, so maybe that accounts for his bladder-control. Gosh, you really have no ballet even touring? Not sure I could live with that. Trey McIntyre is the head choreographer for the Boise, Idaho ballet, and when I read that in a programme a couple years ago, it blew my mind. I mean, if Boise has its own company, doesn't every city? I guess not. We have a dance program here at the college, and we always have a couple companies every semester, and the NYC Ballet has a visit every fall, so I guess I'm pretty spoiled. It's good that Kylee lets you know when she needs to go out. I bet she'll be trained in a couple weeks. What does Keegan think of all this middle of the night action?

Kind of muggy here today, but not too hot. Oh well, it's summer, so I cannot complain.

Hi to Cathy, Joan, and Josie!

We think the fawn gets in by crawling under a gate. No way can he go over, and there are no openings in the netting. 3 gates. our ground isn't level so to get the top of the fence & the gate itself level, the gates all have varying amounts of space at the bottom... maybe 8 inches? at dirt level on one side, and maybe 8 inches high on the other side. Nothing huge. we knew the cat can scoot under but never imagined a fawn would wiggle under it. there's no other way! and he was in there again on saturday when we got back from the hike. so went down, opened the gate, and scooted him out the open gate. he heads right for it and shoots right out, like he's playing a game.

wow, deb lots of interrupted sleep. but it's just short term. do the 2 little guys sleep together? or do they have their own crates? or sleep wherever they want? I never had a puppy, just an adult dog. he liked the sofa which smelled like a warm dog after not too long. he was too big to sleep with us and that's probably a hard habit to break.

we took a garden day sunday ..we were both tired and didn't want to drive anywhere. today we did a mt bike, 4 hrs 20 minutes. really fun, lovely weather. a little buggy in some places but not too bad. on a closed FS road, so nobody on it at all. it's uphill one way, about 9 miles, so the return is fast and fun. only a couple spots to carry the bikes over.

Hey,

Had a good night's sleep last night, 7 hours! Yeah! The secret is to get her really tired about an hour before you plan on going to bed. We ran her around, played with her and I was ready to fall asleep myself, but kept saying that I needed to get her good and tired. It worked. She slept from 9:30 to 4:30 without a peep. Have to take Keegan to the vet this morning, he has blood in his urine. Hopefully it's only a UTI and they can give him some anti-biotics. It's always something. He is pretty healthy, ( except he has allergies, yep, allergies.).

Garance, nope, no ballet here. We can barely keep our Philharmonic orchestra alive. But hockey, and football? of course! Ugh. As for Keegan, he ignores us in the middle of the night, can't be bothered. Kylee is 10 weeks, so not that much younger than Max was when you got him. I guess it can be the breed, size etc. She is so tiny. I didn't weigh her, but I would think she is somewhere between 6-8 pounds.

Valerie, I am surprised that a fawn is by himself and no Mama around. If he doesn't eat the vegetation, what is he doing in there? strange, he almost seems tame. That is a problem with wildlife that is too close to where people live. A full grown deer crashed through the front window of a restaurant here once. It was awful. No, the dogs have their own crates, hers is a little puppy one. They are side by side though and I think having him there calms her down a bit. We never let any of the dogs sleep with us. I know some people do, and it can be ok. But with terriers, you may be asking for future trouble. They have a thing about being the "alpha" and sleeping with the supposed alphas is not a good thing to do. None of them ever even went up on our bed for a second.

Josie, where are you? on vacation?

Joan, how are things going?

Cathy, is the heat subsiding at all?

I will check back when I get back from the vet.

Well, back from the vet, and Keegan has some sort of stones in his bladder that are the type that will not disolve. He has to have them removed surgically. I will be taking him in Friday morning, if all goes well, pick him up Saturday am. Unbelievable. It's like deja vu ( sp?) when Kelsy had to have that ACL surgery when Keegan was a puppy. At least he was house trained by that time. This should be interesting

Hi Deb and Valerie--

This morning I did disk 10 for bis, sh, and ch (55 min.). All I can say is, holy schmoly, forget doms. I have ioms (immediate onset muscle soreness).

Valerie, according to DH, does with young fawns find a safe place to leave them while they go off foraging. DH must be careful cutting hay, because he does not want to mow some poor little fawn. When the grass is really high before first cut, he sometimes surprises 2 or 3 fawns hidden in the field. (Although it seems kind of late in the season for this in your case.) Maybe the doe for your fawn figured out, "Hey--this must be the safest place for my little one, so I'll park him here!" On the other hand, maybe mom met Bambi's mom's fate (oh, no!).

Deb, Max definitely was weightier than that. Kylee sounds very petite, and your strategy reminds me of what we had to do with our younger son--wear them out and then they'll sleep through the night. Gosh, that's tough about Keegan! Is this something the breed is prone to getting?

Hi Ladies,

I'm back from another vacation, if you can call it that! I had a full house with my DS and his DG and 1.5 year old baby plus my 2 grandkids. I'm tired and need a vacation by myself.
Even though I was tired I would not change anything. Now my house is so quiet and lonely :(

It is time for me to get back on the workout wagon and start putting in the miles on the bike.
I need to build the butt callous again.

Deb, the puppy is so adorable; it makes me want another dog. My Astro is now 12 and his arthritis is hitting him on his left hind leg. He still manages to chase a cat that has adopted our back yard though.

Garance, are you going to go see The Help? I will try to go on Saturday.

Hi Valerie, Joan, Cathy!

Josie

Lynda, I think meso 1 is the hardest, but I think I got the most benefit from it.
I don't think the doe is stashing him, but she's too big to get in herself. I would love to see him in process of crawling under the gate but that probably won't happen. I hope that's it anyway. We have quite a few deer around but they move a lot and really, they all look alike. we had one doe with twins, one with a singleton. since they all look alike, it's hard to be sure of numbers. plenty of my ornamental plants are being eaten but they seem to eat mostly at night. this fawn seems to be too small to be alone so I'm hoping I just am not seeing his mother. his spots have faded and he doesn't seem to be very afraid of me.

Oh Deb, bummer on needing surgery! kidney stones are no joke for anyone. can his diet be adjusted to make stones less likely? Animals seem to go thru surgery with way less fuss than people. harder on the owner than the dog.

Josie, get back on that saddle! I've been riding pretty regularly but my butt doesn't like any more than 3 hours. yesterday was 4 1/2 but mt bikes you bounce a lot more and we needed to take frequent stops.

Good morning,

We had another good night, Kiylee slept until 3:30, whimpered a little, so I took her out, she did her business ( yay!) and went right back to sleep until I woke up at 5:30. It was great. I will have to get her on my morning workout schedule so there will be something that will make me get up.

Keegan is a little lethargic. I want this surgery done and over with so he can be healing and get back to his cheery self. He and Kylee have started to play together and it is a riot. He is so much bigger than her, but seems to know how to get around her and not hurt her. He is so sweet.

Garance, STS Meso 1 is the hardest for sure. We were counting on Keegan tiring Kylee out, but with the surgery and his recovery, it is going to be a challenge keeping her away from him. We may need to put the "coral" back in the living room, like we did when Kelsey had her ACL surgery.

Josie, welcome back!

Valerie, these are bladder stones, same seriousness for sure. Something that has a tendency to come back. It's caused by too much minerals or something in his system that does not metabolize the minerals the way it's supposed to.

Gotta run, meeting with bank person in 10 minutes!

Deb, I don't know if it's the same in dogs as people... think stones can form in any part of the urinary tract from kidneys on down. they work their way out from the bladder to the outside . I think any part of the process is pretty painful, causes some blood in the urine. people that are "stone formers" usually get the stone itself analyzed and then get their diet adjusted or take meds to help prevent further formation. cause, I've been told, you don't want to repeat the process if possible. so he probably doesn't feel so great. poor little guy. hope he can get thru this quickly so he can recover.

sounds like a plan.. another reason to get up and work out. you need to anyway.

went to yoga yesterday and did an ab workout later. very busy shopping day and my legs feel like they need a break the next day when I do 4 hours of anything. Think we will do a street ride today, usually that's 2-3 hrs.
cool and cloudy today as it was yesterday. we are not going to have summer temps at all this year. the garden doesn't like it. I got a bunch of transplants from a friend and it's been nice because I haven't needed to water daily. but many crops are growing so slowly there's no chance anymore of actually ripening. we usually get a lot of squash, winter and summer, and the zucchini doesn't even have flowers yet. winter squash has flowers but fruit the size of a quarter.

Hi Deb, Josie, and Valerie--

This morning I did Bootcamp Boogie (63 min.).

Welcome back, Josie! Sounds like you need a vacation from your vacation, but you had a great family get-together. I will probably wait on the reviews of The Help, but I definitely want to see it. Some great actresses playing the big roles.

Maybe the reason meso 1 is so hard is that it sneaks up on you with some of the exercises. E.g., the barbell curls with the band adding resistance. Only a 25 lb barbell, but I was groaning by the end of them. And the 10-10-10 down on the shoulders. I was down to 10 lbs., but it felt like 20 on the last 10. AND THE PUSHUPS! One more disk on meso 1 tomorrow.

Deb, when does Keegan have his surgery? Is he lethargic now because of pain or meds? Poor guy!

Valerie, I will not wax rhapsodic about our garden, because I'm sure it's the last thing you want to hear. Our summer has really been lovely. Only a few truly uncomfortable days of HHH, and enough rain to keep everything growing.

Good morning,

It looks like it's going to be a nice day, cool right now which is good.

Not much going on today, the AC/Heating guys are coming to do our once a year free check up for the boiler and AC units. Yay.

Valerie, yes it seems that all the same things that can happen with people with stones, can happen to dogs. Some breeds more than others I guess. Keegan is the 4th Wire Fox terrier we have had ( not counting the puppy of course) and this is the first of this we have seen. He had crystal in his urine when he was a puppy, had to go on special food for a while until they dissolved. These are the type that do not dissolve. Now that they are playing a lot, it will be hard to separate them, but I will have to figure it out. We have a plastic X-Pen in the yard that I can bring in and build a coral type thing in the living room. That is how we kept Keegan away from Kelsey when she had her ACL surgery. It's always something!

Garance, Good job on Meso 1. I bet you are glad to be moving on. I never did get that BB curl with the band right. Keegan's surgery is tomorrow morning. He stays overnight and we pick him up Saturday am. Our garden is a loss this year. We didn't water enough when it was so hot, so the flowers didn't come out well. Next year.

Time to get something to eat, will check back later.

Hi Deb, Josie, and Valerie--

This morning I did disk 11 for back and tris (53 min.).

I'm trying to decide whether to take the week off Cathe recommends between mesos, or just soldier on.

Feels a bit autumnal this morning here, Deb. I don't really want summer to be over yet. I will be thinking about Keegan tomorrow. So far, no medical issues with Max (knock on wood!).

Looking forward to Project Runway tonight. Wonder what the challenge will be this time. My all-time favorite was Hershey's candy. A really great cocktail dress made entirely of red twizzlers.

We never did the street ride on wed but did some finishing off of our patio, and other garden chores. so I did Lower body Blast later. I like that one, and can do it all now with a little wimpiness on the floor work but only on the second side. got thru the first leg but the second leg I had to drop for a second to recover. Yoga this morning, and when I got home DH wanted to do a street ride. so we did a fast 26 miles before he went to work. my legs and butt are tired!

Deb, hope Keegan's surgery goes well. what kind of crystals? uric acid? just guessing.

Lynda, glad your garden did well. some years we have a terrific crop, but probably not this year. just too cool. things are small, and not even getting flowers on cukes, zucchini. just been too cool. but no problem with sleeping because it's been so comfortable. so we saved $$ on air conditioning. I don't usually take off a full week but it depends on timing. I've finished a cycle right before vacation a few times and that worked well. I think a couple days are enough.

Looking for a new TV series to watch so we tried Dexter. Blech. not for me.

Hi Deb and Valerie--

This morning I did Just Dance (51 min).

Deb, I hope Keegan is already in recovery after his surgery.

I think I will do different stuff next week for upper body and resume meso 2 the following week.

Last night on Project Runway, they had to partner another designer and create a costume for stiltwalkers. Some of the partnerships were not good at all. Really wonderful designs in some cases. The young woman eliminated did not even know how to cut out a pattern on grain. Definitely a good elimination.

Valerie, we don't have AC and only rarely have wanted it. We live on the side of a mountain, and it seems as though things cool down every night for sleeping. Did not buy Lower Body Blast. How long is it? More squats and lunges?

Most years we have a weekor two that are unpleasantly warm.... I tend to be too warm anyway, makes me very cranky. not being able to sleep makes it worse. our bedroom is unfortunately the warmest room in the house. We don't run it a lot but it sure is nice when we need it. It's also nice if some of the lunatic neighbors are blowing off fireworks. we can shut windows and not suffocate. I like it about 50 to sleep comfortably.

LBB is squats/lunges mixed with some cardio bursts. a little mild jumping. a few lunges using slider disks. "more reps" versus heavy weight. ends with a short section of floor work. even a section of step moves in the warm up (that I can't do) so I improvise and just jump on and over the step. it's pretty close to an hour including the stretch at the end. somehow, this one just works for me. no dread factor. not a lot of stuff to drag out. I use 8's, 10's & a 25 lb barbell. paper plate, a band. I get so tired of switching plates on the barbells all the time.

Deb, hope all went well. let us know.

Happy Friday Ladies,

I have to leave work early to go to my Dentist appointment. I hope that he finishes my root canal today! I'm so tired of going to his office; this will be my 4th time. I have been going to the same Dentist for the last 23 years and he is great, but his office is quite far from me.

I found a new studio near my house that teaches The Bar Method, it is like Physique 57.
My DD and I will be trying a free class tomorrow. Everyone swears by it.

I will be spinning and taking the bar class tomorrow and on Sunday I plan on riding my bike for 42-50 miles.

Deb, I hope that everything went well with Keegan's surgery.

Garance, I forgot about Project Runway last night. I will have to watch it this weekend
On Demand.

Valerie, Cathy and Joan have a great weekend!

Josie
