Hi,

The Scottish festival was great, dogs had all kinds of fun running around the open field ignoring all the normal commands that they are used to doing.....but it still was great. We took a lot of good pictures, and even one video of Keegan where he kind of listened, but not all the time.

We went on a 10 mile bike ride early this morning, it was a little cool, but warmed up a bit on our way back. It took us an hour and 24 minutes. I would have gone a lot faster, but DH has to get some time to build his leg muscles, he said they start to cramp up for some reason.

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Monday

Good morning,

I struggled with C25K this morning, had to walk a bit of the last jogging part. I will not move forward until I complete a week of all 3 workouts. It may take me a while..

Work, then class tonight, nothing much else going on here....

Take care,

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

Yesterday I did the 60 min. premix on STS total body (this one leaves out the bonus burn sections). This morning I did the 47 min. premix on Cardio Supersets, which includes step.

Cute photos of Keegan, Deb. He looks like he really enjoys doggie "dressage."

The Compagnie Kafig performance on Saturday was spectacular. Standing ovation went on and on, and each of the dancers did his own little solo in response. One more performance next Saturday--the Joffrey Ballet--and then Jacob's Pillow's season is over for another year.

MMMMM--had lobster for dinner last night with corn on the cob and our tomatoes. Love summer food.

Did a mt bike today supposedly a premliminary to a hike. the forest service has closed the road to motorized traffic and is letting it revert back to nature. we planned to ride the road and then do the hike and then ride back for a total of about 16 miles. but it was warm and muggy and the mosquitos were awful. the road was, as most roads to trailheads are, uphill for 5 miles. not that steep but almost no breaks. it was rocky and getting overgrown with shubbery. we got there but didn't feel like we could finish the hike comfortably, several miles and several thousand feet gain. so we explored the other direction on the trail since there is supposed to be access from another place. now at least we know we can ride this road to the trailhead. road was just closed last year.

we walked another mile or so back toward trailhead to explore #2 and then went back to where we'd stashed the bikes and ate lunch. by now the weather conditions were better and a breeze had come up and it was much less humid but we decided to let it slide with what we'd done already. took us 2.5 hours to ride up, and we rode back down in about an hour. I fell one time and got some nasty bruises. I can't carry a backpack when riding a bike so need to lash the pack to a rear bike carrier. a screw holding the carrier fell out, I got tippy and went down before I knew what was happening. I am pleased though, that I was able to ride the whole uphill route without pooping out. pretty strongly, actually. if it hadn't been so sweaty warm and buggy we might have felt a lot better about continuing.

Deb, that looks like fun with the doggies!.. please tell me you don't need a trailer like in the background pic #1 to transport those little guys!

It takes time to get legs used to riding. especially if he doesn't usually to physical stuff. different muscles than walking. I'm really pleased biking has worked the same area that cathe focuses on. did not get sore at all from LBB.

Tuesday

Good morning,

No workout today, late class last night. We have a roofer coming tomorrow to give us an estimate on a roof for the house, garage, and for gutters. This should be interesting. Let's see if he even shows up. You know how when you are speaking with one of these guys, and you get the feeling that they are reluctantly saying that they will come by and measure etc then call you? Somehow I felt he did not want the job, not really anxious and I was asking him all kinds of questions, and telling him things I thought he would have asked me. I guess we will see .

Lynda, the Joffrey ballet is pretty well known correct? ( as you can see I am not up on this but I have heard of them.). Keegan does like his "doggie dressage"... cute description.

Valerie, that road that you hiked sounds tough. Glad you didn't get hurt on the fall. The trailer in the background is a horse trailer, there were horse exhibititors there as well. I didn't see what they were actually doing.

Hi to Josie, & Joan,

take care,

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did the upper body premix on High Reps (39 min.).

Yes, Deb, the Joffrey are on a par with NYC Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. They are completely sold out. Hope the weather is good. We're coming up on the anniversary of Irene, which kept us from going to our final performance last year. Sheesh, you'd think with the housing slump a roofer would be happy to have a big job. Do you have an Angie's List to check him out?

It's really wonderful that I don't have to think about syllabi and school starting. The sports teams are all here already and it won't be long before the fall invasion. I am happily free of those frenzied startups.

Valerie, that sounds like a tough hike. I would probably have injured myself.

Deb, he may have other jobs lined up, maybe too long a drive, other time committments etc .... who knows? if he's in business for himself he must have reasons. any number of things that might make them not want to take a particular job without actually saying so, because they think plain refusing looks bad. lots of times they bid very high or just don't follow up at all. I wish people would be more forthcoming but contractors don't seem to have that trait. we try to get 3 bids on a project. can't say we've always picked "right" but mostly we have. see if he'll supply references from previous jobs. we picked a bad contractor for our roof though, so be cautious. he seemed fine but was a jerk. do you have a state agency on line where you can check for current licenses and complaints?

most of our hike was a ride. we want to try it again when temps are lower so we're not feeling like we hit the wall before we even get to the trailhead. the hike itself is not as long as we thought after looking at some other trip reports. we should have rested, tanked up on fluids and continued. I think we were both pretty dry and that always makes you feel fatigued.
reminds me deb... make sure DH is getting enough fluids in. I think dehydration, loss of electrolytes that can cause leg cramping. do you have a bottle holder mounted on the bike frame? makes it easier to drink enough. 10 miles isn't enough generally to get "dry"
but alot of people, especially if they take diuretic meds for BP, can be on the 'dry" side before they even get on.
I've got some big bruises this morning but otherwise feel fine. just colorful.

Good morning,

I did the C25k run this morning, and after the warm up and first jogging part I realized I was doing Week 2 instead of 3 aarrgghh!!..I seem to have a mental block about completing week 3 for some reason.

Lynda, don't rub it in! I think about retiring every day and am counting down the months, etc.

Valerie, this roofer comes highly recommended.. he did 2 of my family member's houses, and they recommended him to others who have had nothing but good things to say about him. Maybe I am just used to them wanting to meet with the owners to do the estimate, so that they are sure of what you want. He didn't even ask if the roof had to be taken off, (it does because we have 3 on there now and that is the limit), I had to tell him that. DH said that he could probably tell when he looks at it and would figure that in the estimate. As for falling, glad you are only colorful and nothing serious happened. I fear that happening. I used to roller blade the same 10 mile trail we did with the bikes the other day, but the last time I did, I fell 4 times. That is when I decided that roller blading was no longer something I needed to do. It was strange that all of a sudden I couldn't stay up, because I used to do the 10 miles with no problems.

Josie, did you buy those large ear plugs yet?

Joan, how is the gym working out?

Off to get ready, take care....

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did the lower impact premix on Crossfire (56 min.).

What's the difference between week 2 and week 3, Deb? Okay, I won't provide any more cheerful commentary on being retired. Actually, I am pretty hard at work getting 3 lectures of about 20 pages each done. I try to write at least one page per day, even if it's a bit rough and must be revisited the next day. My office is in disarray with notecards everywhere, books open, a real mess, which is always the way it looks when I am writing.

The weather has been absolutely beautiful this week--cool nights, warm and sunny days. I hope this lasts into the fall.

Hey, Josie--did you ever manage to confront your co-worker?

Valerie, hope your next try on that trail goes better.

We rode the trail this morning, 25 miles. think we should have hiked but Dh didn't think we got up early enough and so that ended that. I'm getting to be a stronger rider, never rode this many times in a season. I can see my MPH going up. places where I used to be at 12, I now do at 15.

also our internet and phone service was down for some unknown reason this morning, and he got all annoyed because he's planned on getting some things done and then couldn't.

Yeah josie, we all want to know if you had a chance to stifle your co-worker!

Deb, maybe he's just busy? so many contractors are jerks that maybe because he's nice and does good work , he gets over -worked. we've had pretty good luck overall.

Thursday

Good morning,

we had a great class last night, ( agility with Keegan). The trainer set it up for dog "Olympic" type games. We each had a flag representing the country our dog originated in ( if possible). Keegan and I were Great Britain. We did pole vaulting, the hurdles, and 2 others that I can't remember now. Keegan took the gold medal in the pole vaulting excercise, and the brass in the hurdles. :D. it was a lot of fun and we did actually get some training out of it. A trainer that actually thought things out and made all the games demonstrate certain agility skills.

Lynda, for week 2 in the C25K, you warm up for 5 minutes, then alternate 90 seconds of jogging, walking, etc for 8 segments, then cool down for 5 minutes. For week 3, you warm up, then jog for 90 seconds, walk 90, jog 3 minutes, walk 3 minutes...you do that twice then cool down. We have been having the same great weather here too. Love it.

Valerie, I think the fastest speed I have gone so far on the bike is 11 mph. How many gears ( speeds?) does your bike have? Mine is 21 I think. I like being in the higher gears.

Off to get ready, take care,

gotta go to yoga.

Deb, it has 3 rings in the front and either 5 or 6 in the rear so I think about 18 total in theory. I have a few spots where I spend most of the time. most of the gears just transition from one to the next smoothly. a lot of the newer bikes have two front gears and more in the rear. there are so many types of bikes and choices I don't begin to understand all the reasons.

Hi Deb and Valerie--

This morning I did Gym Style Ba, Sh, Bis (50 min.).

Deb, how many minutes of jog/walk are you actually doing? I know you like workouts of about 30 min., so I assume it's about that?

Reading a very good novel right now--The Snow Child. I also read Beautiful Ruins and thought it was really funny at times. Gave up on Richard Ford's Canada and quickly sold it back on Amazon. When I was younger I always finished a book. Now I figure life is too short to waste it on something that bores me. Anyone reading anything good?

ttfn

last book I read was on hiking the pacific crest trail but it was just marginal. written by a guy from new zealand. he didn't seem interested in the kinds of things I'd like. for most people, hiking the PCT ends up being knocking off mileage and it does not seem like a truly enjoyable 'wilderness" experience. I've been reading mostly non fiction but nothing remarkable lately.

yoga this morning. we spent all hour working on two poses, one was pigeon . I hate that one! so uncomfortable and my hips/knees/ankles do NOT connect in a way that it will ever improve.
when I cross one leg over the other, my knee on the top leg stays very high. knee pounts upwards. a lot of people's legs rotate outward so their top leg is horizontal. most of the people in class have more that kind of movement. this is not arthritis,or anything like that. just structural differences. all the moves that focus on that outward rotation of the hip are impossible for me. I've been doing this for >5 yrs and it hasn't changed an iota. I can drop into tripod without even trying but cross my legs? noooo.

Did STS disk #22. one more disk in this cycle. I upped weight on one move but most same as last. I hate the close position push ups. I do most on my knees because my elbows want to flare no matter what I do. all other tricep moves are fine but that one is tough.

Friday

Good morning,

I did not sleep well, so I didn't get up this morning for a workout. Maybe tomorrow morning before class,

Lynda, the C25K end up around 28 minutes, but I keep going until 30, so I am always comparing the calorie burn to the same amount of time. The nice thing about these is they can be done anywhere, just need an iPod type player. The Ap that I am using plays along with your own music, it lowers the volume and the "voice" tells you when to start walking or running, then the music volume goes back up, really kind of cool. I have not read a great book in a long time. Nothing to really recommend. I am the same, I used to push my way through a book, felt almost guilty not finishing it, but no more. I don't waste my time, too many others to read.

Valerie, I try to stay between gears 12 (hills) and 18 for riding. I like feeling like I have to work to pedal. Have you ever tried Cathe's Yoga dvd? I know you like the class setting better, just wondered how you would rate it.

Anyone doing anything exciting this weekend?

Deb, I didn't get cathe's yoga one. yoga is not intuitive for me. even with a class and instruction, many of the basic poses elude me. even my instructor flatly says,"you're not going to be able to do those moves, don't beat yourself up over it." a lot of basic yoga is hips. my hip joints are apparently not "standard". even DH who has never done one minute of yoga, can sit way better than I can.

I'm not sure how the gears are numbered. I use the highest gear I can without pressuring my knees too much. I try to get a brisk cadence going and go up in the gears as long as I can maintain. if I have to slow the rhythm and push harder, I gear down. when you watch good cyclists they pedal quickly without laboring.

wow, did you see Lance Armstrong is getting stripped of a lot of his medals? I guess more details will come out. it's hard to know who to believe. so many sports have become all about drug testing, with participants, mainly winners, assumed to be users beating the system and finding it not possible to prove innocence. I don't see how you could prove you didn't do something, especially if you passed all tests at the time.

we're going to be gone the weekend and probably monday and tuesday. visiting family in oregon. probably nothing active. SIL is the one getting her knee replaced soon, this fall sometime.

got my DW fixed I think yesterday. had to take it entirely apart, the heater is on the bottom. took the guy 2 hours. I ran a cycle last night and it seemed to be heating the water. I hope this is it.

Hi Deb and Valerie--

This morning I did To the Max--the lower impact premix (39 min.).

Deb, I'm off to Jacob's Pillow for the Joffrey Ballet tomorrow and our younger son is coming for the weekend to play golf with his grandfather, so we will spend some time with him. I think you would like the Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey if you are looking for something to read.

Valerie, I think I mentioned Wild by Cheryl Strayed to you before. It's also about hiking the Pacific Coast Trail. I think it's been on the bestseller list for quite awhile, so I'm not the only one who enjoyed it. I bet you are happy to have that dishwasher back in operation. I don't like the pigeon pose either. Cathe seems to be doing a lot of them in the final stretches lately. For some reason my foot starts getting cramped--probably from the crushing weight of my chest!

Have a great weekend!

thanks for the reminder Lynda. I'd forgotten about it and wanted to get it for
DH and maybeeven read it myself. need to be sure he doesn't already have it. he has a lot of books on wilderness hiking and I've never seen them all. he'll order 5-10 from amazon and stow them near his side of the bed and they're never seen again.

Deb, my cousin just sent me pics of his new doggie... it's a wire hair terrier a rescue dog fromm TX.

Ahhhh....Saturday...:)

Agility class today, and we are going out to dinner tonight, to a place that DH got a gift certificate for. we need to use it before it expires. Don't you hate that? how can they expire when someone has given them the money? I understand about "the books" and how they can mess them up, but come on!

Anyway, enough ranting.

Valerie, I would love to see the pic. How old is it? Hate that Lance Armstrong is losing all the titles...talk about guilty with no evidence! They said he has taken 500 different tests, some at random etc. Terrible. Bet you are glad the DW is finally fixed. Have a good trip.

Lynda, have fun at the ballet. I didn't mention, I caved and ordered the new KCM..just the one though. Plateau Buster. I hope she ships soon.

Off to eat and do some things around here. Have a good weekend.
