Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 8/11

I'm back!. a day early. we did the ride we planned... covered 2 days. It's a paved trail converted from an old railroad line. we based ourselves at a campground in the middle and rode out and back from the "middle spot" both directions. one day was 27 or so miles, the next 37. the second day was especially nice with some big hills. we were a little tentative going out since you don't want to get going too fast if you don't know what's at the bottom... the ride back was faster. some sections were completely in trees with no visible or audible "civilization' , another section was long isolated beach. that part had gravel in parts yet, though they were working on it as we rode through. still.... skinny tires need to go slow on loose gravel. most of the trail is in the rain shadow of the Olympics so warmer and drier, almost California-like.
camping wasn't bad.. this time of year can be awful. just one group in the campground had a shrieking child. wow. she was apparently having "fun" but shrieked in a tone that could crack windshields... for hours! I don't understand how parents can allow that to go on and on. we were not even that physically close but the sound carried.

Lynda, how did DH tear his rotator cuff? I don't remember you saying that before. and yours? Do you think it was this connected to STS in any way? that was how I hurt mine. I let it rest for a couple months and then started up slowly doing only moves that didn't bother it. I was lucky, mine healed on its own but it doesn't hurt to get a professional opinion.

deb, good luck on the trip. it's sad to see sometimes but also can make you feel better when they eventually pass... that it was time, and that they weren't having ant fun anymore. .

Hi Ladies,

Spent the night at the ER. I could not sleep last night so I decided to watch tv and about 1:00 my daughter came out of her room and told me that she had a sharp pain on her abdomen. I did not want to take any chances and took her in. All the test came out fine and the CT scan came out fine. The Dr. said that she probably passed a small kidney stone because there was some blood in her urine. Now I'm wide awake:(

Valerie, welcome back!

Deb, have a safe trip, hope everything turns out ok.

Hi to Lori, Garance and Judy!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did XTrain bis and tris (45:34).

The doctor says my shoulder is partially frozen. He gave me a cortisone shot, which feels great, and I will have to do PT for it. No surgery, thank goodness.

Valerie, DH isn't absolutely sure about how he tore his rotator cuff, but he thinks it was from a major collision with a soccer player when he was refereeing. So which is worse: black flies, or a shrieking child? I really know what you mean, though, about shrieking children. There is something so shrill about the occasional child (usually a girl) who does this, and I feel like I'm listening to fingernails on a blackboard. Thank goodness neither one of my boys did this. They just liked to fight with one another (sigh!).

Lori, enjoy your vacation and don't worry too much about food. I hope DH's surgery goes well. He is sooooo busy and so much of his work is physical that it's hard for him to take a break.

Deb, have a great trip!

Josie, better safe than sorry! My younger son had appendicitis and I just took him in and didn't wait either to hope it would go away.

Hi to Judy!

Black flies are probably worse, but the timing was awful. child was shrieking when we were trying to relax and wind down to sleep. positive it was a young girl (not a baby) and it went on for hours. It was the most piercing sound I can remember hearing in a long time.... it certainly did not belong in a public campground.... going on and on. WAY worse than nails on a blackboard.... we had to shut windows and use ear plugs. so incredibly inconsiderate. it was dark and late when she finally stopped( maybe her parents strangled her?) but I thought we were going to need to move to the far end of the campground.

both my brother and sister have torn rotator cuffs, both arms, from unexpected falls on an outstretched arm. pretty, big traumatic falls. neither had very good outcomes. shoulders can be tempermental!

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Cardio Supersets Express + Step (47 min.).

Off to Jacob's Pillow both tomorrow (Wendy Whalen, a NYC Ballet prima ballerina in 4 different pas de deux) and Sunday for a flamenco troupe. The weather looks great for both days.

Hope you are enjoying your getaway, Deb, even though it sounds as though your SIL is more the focus of the trip.

Valerie, are you saying that both your brother and sister had surgery and neither one had a good outcome? Our doctor is much more encouraging, and DH has friends who went through the long PT with great outcomes, so maybe they just didn't do the PT, which apparently is the hard part. For DH it's the scheduling and finding someone reliable to pick up the slack on what he can do.

Enjoy the weekend everyone! Summer is waning.

yes, both had surgery on both shoulders and neither had very good results. my sister's one shoulder is "OK" but the other didn't work well, and she has trouble with her hand going numb and has to wear a wrist split of some sort. my brother has had multiple surgeries to try to put his shoulders back together and none of it was successful. He took a bad fall on ice maybe 10 years ago and nothing ever held in place. he fell another time off a ladder and hurt the other side. he has type 2 diabetes and is not the most compliant person. I don't know if the problem was the injury, the surgeon, his compliance or something else. maybe a combo of all things. both went to PT, my brother for years. so not meaning to throw a negative light on things... but things don't always work out as planned. of course, no one counts on things going wrong but they can.

It also depends on how bad the injury was to begin with... both my siblings had BIG bad complete tears. and neither one was in great health otherwise, my sister..... totally, completely out of shape and my brother with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes. he was physically very strong and in shape before the fall/accident but uncontrolled diabetes does not enhance tissue health. the surgeon only has the available protoplasm to work with.

hey, I resent that remark! LOL. Got here safely although it took 12 hours from the time we left our house until we walked into SIL's.

She is better than we expected although she does sleep 18 hours a day.

I will try to read all posts and catch up.

Hi Everyone,

This week I've stayed on my rotation, doing a Spinerval in the morning and Xtrain strength training at night. The Xtrain rotation is Chest, Back, Shoulders on Monday & Thursday, Biceps & Triceps on Tuesday & Friday, and Legs on Wednesday & Saturday. I'm using Burn Sets and Premixes for some variety. I think I am getting stronger and my push-ups are getting better. I'm starting to be able to go down further, though not as far as Cathe. I'm adding Core 1 or 2 every other day or so.

Deb-I'm sending good thought for you and your family this weekend, I know it will be difficult :(

Lori-Great job getting your workouts in!

Valerie-Sounds like you had a great trip, except for the screaching child , that would drive me nuts

Lynda-It's great you don't have to have surgery. Cortisone shots can really help. I'm lucky that I've never had a shoulder problem. DH hurt his shoulder at the gym several years ago and he couldn't workout for months afterwards.

Josie-I'm sure glad everything is ok-definitely better safe than sorry.

We'll be working at FIL's again this weekend, though nothing like last week. I'm hoping the weather holds out so we can get a nice bike ride in on Sunday.

Hope you all have a good weekend,

Judy

Good morning!

Leaving the Cape this morning. Had a great week. Yesterday we went to Martha's Vineyard and had a great time. Was a quick day trip. Weather was perfect. Looking forward to going home and seeing our pets. When we travel the dogs go nuts when we get home. Even the cats come out and welcome us. Very cute.

No workout yestday as we left early and came back late. Wednesday I did T25 Cardio and travel fit (no abs though). The walked 2 miles in the evening so friday being a rest day was dine with me! When I get home today Chester will take no mercy and demand a walk. So thatnwill be my workout for today!

Garance...glad you do not require surgery. With your dh everyone's different. My ex had great success with his surgery. He was in good shape and did everything the doctor told him. He had a pretty good tear too and it healed well. Positive thoughts coming your way!

Valerie...love reading about your adventures. Sounds like it was a fun getaway.

Judy...I love doing pushups now. Didn't last year. Hated them. But then the stronger I got and the results I was seeing made me start to like them a little more each day.

Josie...gald your DH is ok. Alwats better to be safe and have things looked at.

Deb...hoping you and your DH enjoy your time with your SIL.

Well..off to pack up!

Have a great weekend all!!!!

Next time I will finish my coffee before I type...

Thursday was the double workout!

And Josie...glad your Daughter is ok!!!! :D

we did a short ride yesterday. planned to do our usual 30 miler, but when we started heading south on the trail there were lots of people (LOTS!) heading north. must have been passed by several hundred in a few miles. very nerve wracking since they were obviously in a club ride of some sort. that many people coming at you constantly at HIGH SPEED in groups got old in a hurry. so we turned around at 6 miles, ending up with 12 total. we later found out it was an annual ride from downtown seattle to downtown Vancouver, B.C. called the RSVP. done in either 1 or two days.... total 188 miles. so we rode a different ride today for about 30 miles. but that got us thinking about training for an event like that. We've never ridden more than 50 miles at a crack, and usually don't do that much but we've been going more often. there's lots of info available about how to train but most of the long rides are in summer and most are over with.

Sorry, I didn't want to put a negative spin on the rotator cuff surgery..... maybe it's unusual to have less than great outcome. I don't consider my family a great source of unbiased info. I still would proceed cautiously because shoulders are tricky joints. think of how many ways they move..backwards, forwards, up, down, around in circles. no other joint works like that! I would pick a surgeon carefully and follow PT religiously. Lynda, be very happy you don't need surgery!

Hi all

Just like home here. SIL has two dogs and they both crawllon my lap!

Judy, what are the plans for your FIL,s this weekend?

Lori, I have not had a chance to do Travel Fit yet. No real room except for the family room in front of John who I know would get a kick out of that and it would be a disaster. It would have to be at 6;00 am or so before BIL gets up. I'll stick to walking with my ipod and those workouts I guess. Have a great homcoming with the pets!

Valerie. I think you and your DH would like one of those rides. We have one annually here for the local cancer hospital. You can choose the length I think the longest is 100 miles.

Hi Josie and Garance.

Have a great weekend!

Good Morning!

Yesterday was a rest day from training. It was a beautiful day so we worked on FIL's lawn. There are some bushes that hadn't been maintained and were somewhat out of control so DH pulled them out, which was quite a job. We need to pull all the roots out and put down fresh dirt and plant grass there next.

We are getting ready to go for a bike ride at Island Lake. Hoping to get more mileage in today.

Have a great Sunday!

Judy
