Good morning,

I did the C25K workout this morning, and it wasn't too bad. This is where you alternate 90 seconds of jogging, 90 seconds of walking, 3 minutes of jogging, 3 minutes of walking twice, with a 5 min warm up and cool down beginning and end. I extend the cool down so it totals 30 minutes.

We went for a short ride last night, only 4.5 miles. I wanted to keep going but DH's legs were cramping for some reason.

Valerie, not sure if CCleaner conflicts with any other virus software. I know when my cousin had a virus on her laptop, the tech guy that does all the computer work for her husband's office cleaned it, and put CCleaner on it. It's free. I think it keeps the computer from getting bogged down with temp files, cookies etc. When I had my last virus issue, I asked the Webroot tech if it was a good program and he said yes, to use in conjuction with the virus software. of course he wanted me to keep their virus software so he didn't give it too many cudos.

I know that people that use Yahoo mail and hot mail are always getting hacked. I have had numerous
"e-mails" from friends that have those accounts claiming that they are stranded in Europe and need me to wire money to them. Of course, not really them, but someone that hacked the account.

Not as hot today as it has been, kind of pleasant. What's everyone up to?

Good morning . we pick up our new subaru this morning. it came in sooner than expected and is ready. that will take a good part of the day.

yesterday we spent with DH's cousin & his wife. took them on a mild hike...they're in less than great shape. a lovely day though on salt water and very scenic. hike was in a park on the water. walked some on trails, some on roads, probably 3 miles . not really a workout but a "workout" for us would have been impossible for them. we went out for lunch after...very pleasant. Had fish tacos which DH won't eat. a good chance to try something new.
we've promised to take them hiking so they can "learn" from us but this will take some time. they need to do "anything" more often. after lunch we had them test our bikes. they live in a condo right on a bike trail but don't ride. we're going to try to change that. we had them try our bikes and gave them some ideas but they will need to rent before knowing what to buy. Tai( wife) is from vietnam and never learned to ride as a child even though she's been in the US since she was 6. she's younger and will catch on quickly. they live lives so different from us but would like to do more outdoors and be in better shape.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

We did make it to the Jersey Shore after my knee started getting better. Fewer days, but at least DH managed to get his ocean fix. I did a couple of three mile walks on Wednesday and Thursday, but I chose not to go in the ocean because the waves crashing against my knee would be foolish. We had our usual side trip to Cape May, which is always fun. Very hot, but nice breeze down by the ocean, and AC in the house.

I think tomorrow I will pull out one of my old Leslies and do some walking, and on Tuesday some upper body work. I'm scheduled for the vein ablation on Wednesday, so all I should do is walking anyway after that. I'm walking without a cane now and feeling better all the time.

Went to Jacob's Pillow yesterday for the Hong Kong ballet. Really excellent company and the programme was really exciting, especially the final piece to Stravinsky's Symphony in Three Movements. Last night was a surprise party to celebrate sil's 50th, and tonight we are going out to dinner with fil, mil, and dh's sister, husband, their two teenagers (we also saw them at the shore), another brother and the sil who had her party last night and two of their teenaged daughters. Quite a big dinner party.

Meanwhile, I have tons of writing to do, so I am back in my office hard at work.

Good morning,

I didn't get up to work out this morning, I had one of those nights where I kept waking up, going back to sleep etc. I did wake up at 4:07..8 minutes before the alarm was going to ring, but decided to stay in bed. Now I messed up my rotation, but whatever.

Garance, so glad your knee is on the mend and you were able to go on vacation. What a crowd for dinner! did you go to your regular Sunday place? Did you pre-order the new series?

Valerie, how is the new car?

Hi to Joan & Josie,

Take care,

Lynda... so glad to hear you're recovering and had a chance to get some vacation time in. do you know mechanically what this injury was? would wearing knee support, even an elastic brace be useful? I wore a knee brace for a year after my ACL surgery .... for serious hiking and sometimes for exercise, not every day, but just to be sure a misstep didn't set me back to square 1. Deb is right, what a bunch for dinner... must have been great fun.

Car is very nice. we're not big on fancy features, and this is a pretty basic Subaru outback. silver, dark interior. drives, handles very smoothly and feels nice and tight. we have a sunroof on our forester but I never use it so skipped it this time. we got the winter package. skipped gps too. I do better with maps. bought portable gps couple years ago but returned it. outside metro areas it was unreliable. and wrong, wrong time after time. this car has function in the rv mirror to replace a garage door opener. also blue tooth but I don't talk on the phone while driving so may or may not bother programming it in.
Getting DW service sometime today. can't wait to get this fixed. really doesn't clean dishes well with cold water.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did Leslie's 4 Fast Miles (50 min.). I did not jog on the boosted intervals, just walked very fast. Tomorrow I plan on doing some upper body work from 4ds.

Deb, we did go to Mezze's and had their "club room" all to ourselves. It was fun seeing three of the four siblings together. The youngest brother is out in Idaho. Also fun to see the three nieces together. The one we spend time with at the shore is into tanning, texting, makeup, looking glamorous, and not much else. The other two, on the other hand, are pretty serious about music, horseback riding, summer jobs, reading. Very interesting to watch. I was going to do the presale, but now I think I will wait awhile, see how I'm feeling. Cathe's presales go on for a long time anyway.

Valerie--I have a subluxating patella, and basically I just sprained my knee. I also have a slight crack in the patella--not sure anything can be done about that. I do have a soft brace I could wear, but right now I just want to increase my flexibility and go back to feeling relatively comfortable with stairs, walking. I see the doctor again next week and I will see what he says. I have a feeling that I should just plan on having a knee replacement and get ready for that at the right time. Enjoy your new car! Our Honda CRV 2005, but bought in 2006, has been really reliable and I really like it.

Hi to Josie and Joan!

DH has the same patella issue. He is wearing out the part of the femur the patella tracks over, and got an injection of some cartilage growth enhancing substance this morning. he will get 3 shots total. he is bowlegged especially on that side. eventually he will need a knee replacement but maybe 10-15 yrs, estimate.

Lynda, keep me posted on your plans for the new series. I definitely want the spin disk so if you decide against, I may change my mind because the pre sale pricing is so attractive. but you're right the pre sale usually goes on a long time with plenty of warnings. I will look and see what options are for ordering less than the whole package, if there are any.

We looked at Hondas but they didn't have enough ground clearance. just a couple inches makes a huge difference.

My DW needs a new "board". warranty so no charge . but it will be another week. Arrgh!!

Tuesday

Good morning,

Slept in again, after getting up at 2:30 with Kylee. so tired.

Valerie, the car sounds nice. I really don't know what the differences are in the Outback versus the Forester. Except the price. ;) I say go for the pre-sale!! $99 for 10 Cathe DVD's is a steel. I think it will be a while before they sell them individually, and then they will probably be around $22 or more. At least they found out what is wrong with the DW, and it is covered under warranty. A week without a DW wouldn't bother me. With just the 2 of us, I usually don't use ours much anyway. Maybe run it once a week, if that. I like it to be really full when I run it. So because of this, I have to almost wash the dishes before putting them in. My MIL used to run hers every night, no matter how few dishes were in there, and tehre were only 2 of them too, kind of a waste of water if you ask me.

Garance, good that you can at least do a walking workout. Keep us posted on the vein procedure. That is tomorrow right?

Hi to Josie & Joan,

Will check back later, to see what's up.

This is not an area short on water.....but DWs use little compared to hand washing. I think I use more water just getting to "hot" water and my DW uses in a cycle. the DW takes what comes and heats it, whereas I have to let gallons run before it gets hot. I run it once a day to every other. I hate dishes piled in the sink and I don't even own a dish drying rack so in they go! everything except bigger pots and pans. and not my good knives.
Anyway, I ran water til hot, threw in a 4 cups of almost boiling water and ran an express cycle . I'll see if that's better than reg long cycle. since it's not heating water, the longer cycle loses heat so maybe this will work short term.

Did AT yesterday and it went better than previously. I've gotten better at the step part on the high step. she goes so fast I miss a few reps at the transitions but gotta watch where my feet go... no room for error. biking has improved my cardio conditioning so this was less difficult than before.

Deb, Outbacks sounded more "solid" than Foresters.. the unscienticific door slamming test. seemed 'tighter " when driving. I could have gone either way. DH liked the Outback much better... I don't think there are big differences... the cars have gotten more similar over the last few years.

Linda.. we will be thinking of you tomorrow... hope all goes according to plan and your procedure is successful and not too unpleasant. (probably too much to call ANY procedure 'pleasant")

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did Gym Style for back, bis, sh (50 min.).

Yes, tomorrow is my vein ablation. I will be wearing a compression stocking and on Thursday I will have to go back for another ultrasound. I'm supposed to take one valium 30 min. before, and another immediately before. 9:30 A.M.

Who knew? I always thought my Honda CRV sat higher than either an Outback or Forester. It's an SUV and I guess what I like most is how high I sit on the road--easier for me to get in and out of than my friend's Outback, for sure, where you sink down as opposed to lifting a leg in.

Finally did get some rain last night. A pretty impressive lightning and thunder show. We really needed it.

Ground clearance is key to driving on rough roads. get down and look under the rear of the car. outbacks & foresters have about 8.5 inches of clearance, more than most cars. more than some SUV's and trucks too. just one part has to hang low to get you caught! we can drive up and down almost anything if we go easy. If we could have another vehicle ...a jeep would be nice but I wouldn't want to drive one all the time, and they don't hold much. so it's like most things.... a compromise of things you need, and things you'd just like to have.
I don't sit particularly high in this vehicle, and will fuss with seat height. it goes higher, and the steering wheel moves. as I have it , I can barely see over the hood. I will admit ... visibility is not as good as from my old car. the newer vehicles all have bigger roof pillars and tapered windows, less square looking. Looks nice but I prefer the older style.

Finally some sun and warmer temps again. lovely out right now. was so cold yesterday we thought about building a fire! todaa will be more like 80.

my DW technique worked.... it's a 30 min express cycle. got things clean before the water cooled down.

Good morning,

A long day for me today, work, then 2 agility classes, and home around 10:00. ***Yawns ** as I am already tired. Woke up with a headache, must be the barometric pressure.

Garance, Good luck today!

Valerie, good that you figured out a "work around" until the DW is fixed. We hardly have any dishes, couple of coffe cups, we both eat lunch at work, and mostly use paper plates at dinner time if we can. ( I know not environmentally good but at least they are paper and not styrofoam!). A few glasses and that's it. With the grill I have no pots or pans to do except maybe on the weekend.

Doing a rain dance here, we are in a drought for sure....

Take care,

Hi Ladies,

I started week 3 of P90X, so far I like the workouts. I increased the weight on all of the chest and back DVD and did more pushups than the first week. I still do the pushups on my knees, but I feel a bit stronger.

Garance, good luck today and I’m glad that you knee is better.

Deb and Valerie, there is always a lot of dishes to do at home, but If my DD or DH uses dishes and they don’t put them in the DW, then I do not cook. Those are the rules ;)

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

Well, that wasn't so bad. I had two valiums, although I don't think it affects me very much. Only did my right leg, and really just this one bad vein that causes trouble down below. Numbed my leg with novocaine and then did the laser ablation. I must go back tomorrow afternoon for another ultrasound, and I'm wearing a compression stocking which is not uncomfortable.

Deb, we still need rain here, but we did get over an inch yesterday and there's more coming tomorrow, so things are dry, but not a drought.

Tomorrow I will do a Leslie walking dvd again. They really encourage walking to prevent any phlebitis.

Josie, I have always been curious about P90X. Can you give a brief description of how it works?

We have been having pesto and tomatoes for dinner last night and tonight. Soooo good, and fresh from the garden. The local butter and sugar corn is just coming in now too, so we have that to look forward too.

Hi Garance,

Here is a link where you can read about P90X:

wellsphere.com/weight-loss-article/get-p90x-results-by-knowing-the-correct-order-of-the-p90x-workouts/9918

I'm following the classic schedule and plan on doing the lean schedule when I finish the first round.

Josie

Did a 35 mile bike ride this morning. it was lovely out and we did it pretty quickly. accidentally didn't get my timer started. I'm faster than I used to be but still have to stop and let my sitbones take a break. not long breaks but I still get sore. my wrists get numb too, but even a 30 second break helps immensely. than it's Ok for a while. I don't see how I could last for 100 miles no matter what. I've tried different padded shorts, underwear, no underwear, and chamois butter and nothing makes a particle of difference.

The procedure doesn't sound too bad... not that any procedure is ""enjoyable". How many more sessions are planned?

Josie, I think knee pushups are in some ways better. I find I can engage my back muscles better with them, for some reason. toe pushups focus most on my shoulders and not so much my back. I like to do both.

Classes were fun, both K's did really well and I had a good time. Didn't get home until 10:15, so I am exhausted. I have today, then a 3 day weekend.

I decided a deserved a day off. We have a bit project starting next week, so I won't be able to take any time off.

Josie, so you are liking P90X? I did like it, but if I heard that comment about potato soup again I would pull my hair out! LOL...You know the one. Yes, there are tons of push ups, all different angles, etc. I did mine off of a bench, actually got pretty good with them for a while.

Valerie, I thought I was the only one whose hands got numb on the bike...does yours have the shift in the handles? I really like it but you have to hold your hands in a particular way and mine start to go numb too. I keep flexing my thumbs, sounds crazy but you know what I mean?

Off for more coffee and to get ready for the last day of this week !! Yay!!

Take care,

Garance, glad to hear all went will with the procedure. I love love home grown corn. mmmmm...now I want some. Maybe make DH go to the store today and get some.

I find that annoying "personal" things are what keep me using a program.... or quitting it. silly things that have little to do with the exercises themselves. ( Cathe & crew does NOT annoy me) I used to watch several people on cable channels. every single one got on my nerves after not long. something someone said, how they said it, what they wore, how they moved ..... silly things but once the annoying thing gets your attention, you anticipate it and it gets worse and worse. maybe that's like whatever the potato soup thing is from P90X!

Lynda, I'm going to order Xtrain /bike disk. DH and I both want it. I've been using disks more. I used to watch TV while on treadmill/elliptical, but there's less and less on TV that's watchable. so don't order the bike disk for me. Sorry, I didn't think I'd change my mind on this but I've noticed my workout patterns changing and the pricing is so good that even if I don't use all the disks it seems worth it.

Deb, I've always had trouble with my wrists. my shifters aren't the issue... it's leaning on my wrists when bent that presses on nerves. I think it's a common issue. I wear padded gloves... they help. taking my hands off the bar and shaking them helps too. my thumbs don't seem to be involved, it's more the inner outside edge of my hand.

I'm getting some good corn lately. I don't like the supersweet varieties but this is very good. holds well in the frig and is nicely sweet with good corn taste. probably CA corn.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did 5 miles with Leslie (68 min.). Perfect for me right now, but talk about irritating. Leslie is aka "cackle and shriek" in our house. DH can't stand her. Even Max seems to skulk away when she comes on. Oh well, I just put up with her right now.

Josie, thanks for the info on P90X. Very interesting, but I will restrain myself right now.

Valerie, that's all right. If I order the new series, I will just order the one without the spin disk. Good question--I am wondering if I am supposed to schedule another procedure for my left leg. I will go back for a follow-up ultrasound this afternoon on my right leg, which seems to be doing fine.

Gosh I'm getting tired of seeing doctors. Monday I have another follow-up on my knee with the orthopedic surgeon. DH wants me to discuss knee replacement with him as well--something I dread.

Had an appointment this morning with a wealth management advisor from TIAA-CREF. Something else to think about. 40 years of putting money in adds up to needing professional advice.

I like your frantic worker, Deb. A bit how I feel at the moment. I have a gallery talk, a lecture on Plath's Boston year, and a lecture on her bee poems. Plus two articles in need of editing and contracts and permissions and more blah, blah, blah. A very good thing I'm "retired." As DH says, "They call THIS retired?"
