Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 7/21

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did KCM's Cardio Quick Fix, both workouts (44:39).

Deb, the actual cutting, tedding, and baling he does by himself, but he has a young fellow working for him when it comes to stacking these 40 lb. bales, either in his own barn or local buyers who own horses.

I'm off to see the Winslow Homer exhibition at the Clark. I thought I had seen everything by him, but it turns out that a lot of his work is privately owned and so there is a lot of new stuff on loan.

Wow, Judy, core 1 and core 2!

Hi Ladies,

The grandkids an I are in Palm Springs visiting my DB. We swam from 8:00-10:00 AM, I did laps using my upper body and tonight I plan on doing Insanity's ab workout.

Garance, your DH must be in great shape.

Deb, I fell off my high heels while dancing Salsa ;)

Hi to Lori, Valerie and Judy!

Josie

Deb, there's a fair distance between the lots. they're pie shaped, and wide at the top near the road, so I think the last time I saw them close up was about 10 years ago when our cat got stuck up a tree in their yard. she's lost weight and let her hair go snow white too, so definitely they look different. I credit DH for recognizing the husband, cause he's seen him at our dentist's office.

Lynda, that is hard to imagine 900 40 lb bales. wow. a lot of work. even with a helper. yeah, the windows will have to wait.

Had a crash this morning on the bike. we rode further than usual and were just starting back in an unfamiliar area. a bunch of intersections where the trail crossed busy roads. I was surprised by a car and braked WAY too hard with just the front brake because I was having trouble with my rt hand going numb. I flew right over the handlebars. last thing I saw were my feet coming out of the toe baskets. I somehow tucked my head and did a flying somersault, landed on my butt and mostly both feet. I banged the top of my rt knee and the heel of my left hand somewhere along the way. no scrapes at all. I put a tiny scrape/ ding in the top of my helmet. I have no idea how I did it. none. zero. zip. the driver stopped to see if I was ok. DH was a little ahead of me and missed the whole event but several people stopped so it must have been spectacular. we should have checked my bike closer because I rode the 15 miles back to our car with the rear brake was dragging all the way.
I look like absolutely nothing happened. even the two sore spots are not showing any color. I DO NOT recommend this technique and can't believe how lucky I was.

That is the truth!. my hand is feeling decent already. I iced it while we ate lunch. my knee is a little sore. just along an outside edge, not any "functional" parts. this would be on U-tube if anyone had filmed it.... I never want that to happen again, and I am so glad I was wearing a helmet...I always do.

Valerie...that is so scary! So glad you are ok. Incredible that you escaped serious injury. I believe in helmets too. People are playing with their lives by not wearing one. When I biked years ago never did I leave the house without one.

Josie...glad you are able to swim. And then doing abs! Good job!

Garance...even prepping the bales seems like a tremendous amount of heavy lifting. I bet he just falls asleep as soon as his head hits the pillow.

Hi to deb and judy!

Good morning,

Nice and cool here yesterday and it seems like it will be like that today too, maybe into the 60's or low 70's. Nice.

Garance, back to KCM I see. She is always a good one to go back to once in a while. A nice change from Cathe.

Josie, what does your DB do in Palm Springs? A great place for vaction, especially if you are a golfer. Ouch...I forgot about you falling off your shoes...

Valerie, so glad that you are ok ....that was amazing that you did not get any serious injuries. Yes, we were helmets all the time too. I thought I would hate wearing one, but you really don't even know it's there.

Hi to Lori, & Judy,

Take care,

I relived the event all night. *sorry, I will try to be done with this today.* I felt my helmet tap the ground as I was flying forward and rolling through the air. there is a tiny little ding on one of the ridges that 's new. my knee is a little stiff because it's slightly swollen on the outside top but works Ok. my hand is about 95% better already. I iced both while eating dinner last night and after I went to bed. I 'll take a few days off biking & see how it feels after being up and around for a while. I will go to yoga. it's not sore in knee itself, just the top edge. still can't believe how lucky I was. it happened so fast... I wanted to stop everyone I saw not wearing a helmet and lecture them.

Hi Ladies,

Valerie, I'm so glad that you are ok. I would never ride my bike without a helmet and I see people doing it all the time and want to lecture them too. You might have to get a new helmet after your fall.

I will be swimming again using my upper body only. The boot is so uncomfortable and my foot is usually swollen by the end of the day. I hope it's doing its job:)

Deb, my DB does not work anymore. He is the one that I do the AIDS life cycle for. He is doing fine and his meds have made the HIV undetectable. Me and my family are lucky to still have him in our lives after almost loosing him 3 times.

Hi to Lori, Judy and Garance!

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Burn Sets ch, ba, sh (50:43).

Wow, Valerie, you are so lucky you escaped with only slight injuries! I often lectured my sons on helmets and biking, and they even wear them skiing now.

On the subject of accidents, have any of you seen the video footage of that awful high speed train accident in Spain? It reminds me of the luge in Olympics winter sports. It just starts flying up the side of a wall that looks like a chute. What a scary accident!

Lori, there's machines for cutting, tedding, and baling, so he just drives around on his tractor most of the time--but in the hot sun. In the old days, before there were tedders, you would have to rake the hay into windrows and sort of fluff it as part of the drying process. Windrows are really pretty. The baler is loaded with baling twine, and DH just drives around as it ties the bales together (DH says it's a bit like the way my sewing machine works with the top thread picking up the bobbin thread) and throws them on to a truck. On the other hand, a baler is a complicated piece of machinery and DH is constantly fixing it.

Josie, my husband is 6 ft. tall and thin--about 162 lbs in the summer and 165 in the winter. He is very strong though.

Deb, we are definitely having cool weather here--it's only 66 today.

Josie, I barely, barely tapped the concrete. I toss the helmet into the back seat with more force. any kind of hard hit.... I'd get a new one. Really, this turned out like some Olympic tumbling move where I was traveling quickly and spun over and landed on mostly my feet.. .kind of over-rotated and hit the knee.
I'm fine this morning. I was dreading the aches and pains that sometimes show up in unexpected places after a surprise fall, but nothing at all. went to yoga. I will give my knee a few days rest but regular walking feels fine and the knee movement itself is 100 % OK. just a tender spot where I hit concrete.

Josie the boot probably restricts blood / fluid flow a little bit as it goes back "uphill" toward your heart, and traps a little extra fluid in your foot. Does elevating your foot help? like when you sit down in the evening raising it on a footstool or a lounge chair with a foot rest? ? or can the boot be loosened a little? lucky you are able to swim in it so you can keep some movement.

Okay I will try to shut up about this now.

Lynda, I used to whine about wearing a helmet. the old ones were uncomfortable. this was by far ( by a factor of 1000x) the worst fall I've taken and I will never complain again. new ones are comfy, and cool with all the air vents. and they even protect somewhat from sunburn. I always wear one biking, and if I skied anymore, I'd wear one then too.

Your DH has a hard job... he must be good at fixing things. Does he have special hats and sunscreen to keep from roasting out there in the sun?

Good evening ladies!

Today ending up being a complete rest day! Slept in and then did errands after work. Was planning to do walk chester but ended up getting home later than anticipated.

Last night was P90x chest and arms. Think I have finally settled into a rotation. Thank god! This one is clicking with me. So for now T25 in the morning then P90x 3 times a week. Weekend it is anything goes!

Valerie...no problem talking about your accident. Every time I read about it I am enthralled with what you went thru I feel like I was right there with you! So no worries!

Garance...i was watching the accident on the news this morning. Unbelievable! They say the train was going way faster than the speed it should have been going. So sad. Last time I knew about 80 were killed. May be more now.

Josie...that is great news about your brother. The advances in medicine in fighting HIV have been incredible. So good to hear.

Hi to Deb and Judy!

Hi Everyone,

I managed a very short run today, 2 miles. I should have all morning to workout tomorrow so I will be doing a marathon session of some sort.

FIL had his assessment today. It was the same doctor, but a much more comprehensive visit. FIL was diagnosed with mild cognitive decline and the doctor wants to repeat the testing every 3 months now. Also, the doctor ordered a driving evaluation for FIL. SIL wants to get more involved and is talking about visiting more often. She even mentioned the possibility of moving FIL to Colorado to live with them but I don't think he can handle the altitude with his congestive heart failure.

Valerie-I also never ride without a helmet-and I always feel like lecturing anyone I see riding without one.

Hi to Deb, Lori, Lynda & Josie

Judy

Good morning and Happy Friday!

I did STS Disk 3 Legs this morning, only the first 41 minutes but hey, better than nothing. I took Keegan for a very short walk/jog last night, ( Lynda & Lori you are inspiring me!).

Valerie, I hear you on reliving the event....I would be doing the same thing.

Josie, I forgot that your DB that you do the ride in honor of lived in Palm Springs...and it's so great that the meds are working etc.

Garance, I have not seen the footage of that accident....with all the work your DH does, I can understand why he is as thin as he is....no need for him to plan a rotation schedule! LOL...

Lori, have you done P90X before or is this the first time? If I remember right, push ups and pull ups etc are what he uses most. I actually bought a pull up bar for the door way for that series...and those assisted pull up straps.

Judy, nice to hear that SIL wants to get more involved with your FIL situation. That should take some pressure off you and your DH.

Work, then relaxing tonight....maybe take Keegan for another walk/jog. He seemed to like it a lot....once I got him to stop trying to lift his leg every 10 feet!

Take care,

Good morning!

No workout this morning. When I stepped out of bed this morning I had this weird pain in my ankle. So decided not to push it so I went back to bed. It feels fine but was strange. If still good then I will do my workouts tonight since DH is working late.

Deb..this is my 2nd round of P90X. Never really did weights before consistently I should say until last May when on a whim my son and I decided to try out P90X. Fell in love with weight workouts. I have collected all of Cathe's weight DVD's through the years thinking ok I am going to start using these at some point. I am now making up for lost time! This round of p90X is now a hybrid of T25 and P90X. So far I am enjoying it and thinking this will stick with me.

Judy...that is great news that SIL wants to help more! Sorry to hear about the congestive heart failure.

No plans other than help my son clean out his bedroom in preparation for him moving out for school. Told him it needs to be clean and somewhat organized before he leaves. My son is not a very good housekeeper!

Have a great weekend all!

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did All Out Low Impact Hiit with core 1 (49:33). I also took Max for a walk last night after dinner.

Deb, Max loves his walk, too. He even knows when I spell it out w-a-l-k to DH at dinner. It looks like you are getting all the sun, while we languish in clouds. According to my son, it's pouring in Boston, so at least we are spared that in the western part of MA. I wish I could sell my pullup straps. I stopped using them when I bought Cathe's tower, and I never really got the hang of them anyway. My sons use the bar DH set up for me--actually, wooden holders on either side and then a bar you can place in them (or out of them, which is where they are most of the time).

Valerie, it's too bad there wasn't a resourceful bystander to take a video of your acrobatic feat. I bet it would have made the news. It sounds like something done on a snowboard or gymnastics, except you didn't 'stick' your landing.

Judy, it sounds like a much more thoughtful assessment of your FIL. Any recommendations this time?

Lori, is it raining where you are?

Hi to retired Josie!

garance...we must have posted at the same time! yes tons of rain the past couple of days and it is COLD! Tomorrow it is suppose to be sunny and 80. Yeah!

Hi,

This morning I did Butts & Guts. Wow! That is a great workout! I think I'll be doing it regularly. I did part of the bonus stability ball abs for a total workout time of 90 minutes. That's the longest Cathe workout I've done so far.
After that, I walked 4 miles in a little over an hour, then rode the spinning bike for 45 minutes.
Tomorrow will be a rest day from training but we will be working at FILs, as usual.

Deb-yes, if SIL and her family spend more time with FIL it will help. It helps us with the work and it helps FIL by giving him more company and giving him things to look forward too.

Lori-great job on doing P90X! I hope that your ankle is ok, definitely a good idea not to work out on it.

Lynda-yes it was a better assessment. Perhaps, since he was a new patient to them last year, they weren't really able to assess him properly. This time they had almost a years worth of his doctor's reports, the visiting nurse reports from last month, and the records of his emergency room visit (he had a staph infection on his face last February) plus his recent fall at his house. The only recommendations the doctor made was for FIL to get a driving assessment (not sure how that works yet) and for FIL to see him again in 3 months for another memory assessment.

Hi to Valerie & Josie!

Judy

Good evening ladies!

Well the ankle is absolutely fine. I must have slept on it in a strange position or something. Never hurt again after I first got out of bed. So this evening I did back to back t25 workouts. Ab intervals and lower body. I am spent!

Judy...glad you liked butts and guts. I really miss this workout. It had been my go to one for a long time. I substituted a few times for the Legs workout when I was doing the Xtrain rotation. Then once I started STS then it sat on the shelf.

Garance....chester is the same way...we can't even spell w.a.l.k. anymore either. He goes crazy barking once he knows it is walk time. When my husband is sleeping and I am taking him for an early morning walk I fake him out and go in the bathroom turn the shower on so he does not know that I am getting ready to take him for a walk! Too funny. They are a lot smarter than we think!

Deb..P90x has tons of pushups all different ways and pull-ups/chin-ups. Good for you getting a pull-up bar! I prefer the bands for pull-ups and really enjoy doing them this way. I am sure it is not as intense but I like the results I get so that works for me!
