Good morning,

Not sure if I am doing Crossfire or going to the track with my cousin to walk/jog this morning. Waiting to hear from her.

Garance, how is the knee today. So sorry this happened, and especially since you may not be able to go on your vacation. 6-8 weeks of therapy? will you need to go to a place or can you do this all at home?

We went for a bike ride last night with my new bike! 8.5 miles. Here it is for those that understand specs ( Valerie!): I just thought that if I was going to get one, now would be the time so I have it for the good weather.

Cannondale Women's Adventure 2 - Bert's Bikes and Fitness - WNY's Premier Bicycle and Fitness Retailer

Hope everyone is having a good weekend, and Garance, I hope you can get this behind you soon.

Take care,

Congrats deb on the new toy! I hope you enjoy riding as much as I do. there's a bike for every possible need these days. I like the dropped bar style for street riding but have upright bars on my mt bike.... so it's whatever fits, feels good. Hope you and John can ride together often, it's a fun thing to take on driving trips too because most vacation sites have riding trails. we take bikes, one kind or the other, on almost all trips. people who would not walk 8 miles can ride it and it's like nothing.

we did a 16 mile ride yesterday. started out to do 30 but it was so hot and humid that we turned around after 8 miles. turned out there was some kind of fair going on that would have been hard to ride through anyway. so it was lucky we turned around.

you can mount a bottle rack on the downtube if you like to take a drink along. I have a bell on mine since we ride a trail with lots of walkers/runners and the "ding" carries better than yelling. I got a rear rack for my mt bike to carry jacket etc. i can't have a pack strap across one shoulder so I use a rack for extra supplies, or for when it warms up and I want to peel off some layers.

That's the price range i thought would be best... you want functional and with standard parts so someone can adjust and replace things. cables wil llikely need adjustment after a few months of use since they stretch a little . some of the cheapie bikes if something breaks, you throw them away and buy a new one. I'd rather spend a little more and get something that is fixable.

Good morning,

I did Week 3 of C25K. This is getting harder now, I don't know if I will be able to get past week 3. It sounds easy until you are actually doing it. I added a fan to the basement, and it make it easier to breathe.

Valerie, the bike comes with a water bottle and holder, and I think I am getting a bell or something. People are so dumb sometimes. We are riding on a path and they see you coming and don't move. A couple of times we had to actually come to a stop, put feet down etc until they got out of the way. l liked this one because it is designed for women, shorter, smaller tires etc. It took a bit for me to get used to the shifting, which I hated and never did with my old 10 speed. The handle bars can be adjusted easily for more upright or down. I like them upright so you are not crouched over. That is what I hated most about my 10 spped. It was on with the low handle bars all curled under? You were almost flat out bent over. It was the big thing at the time and in 1973 or so, $200 so it was a nice bike for that time. I just never got used to it. It's been haning upside down from the rafters in the garage since we moved in here. I am not sure what to do with it now. Would someone want it for parts or something? I was thinking Craig's list, but hate to have strangers come to the house. It would probably only need new tires and it would be like new.

Garance, how are you doing? Keep us posted on your knee situation, I feel horrible for you.

Hi to Josie, & Joan.

Take care,

Just a reminder.....the pre-order started actually yesterday, ( they said it was going to be today, but apparently had it up early).

I ordered the new set, with the Ride DVD. It was strange because I couldn't find the pre-sale, no big ad on the home page etc. I ended up going into the OPen forum where someone had put a link. Now I see it is under the "Cathe's Newest & Upcoming..." forum.

I feel right at home. Two days ago my knee started hurting when I walked. When I got up from a chair it made a screeching sound and then I could walk but going up stairs really hurt. I have iced it and today thought it was back to normal. Unfortunately going up and down the stairs has started the pain again. Now it hurts all the time. The only thing I was doing before this started was picking apples and going up and down a ladder.

My vacation starts Friday. We are in Las Vegas from Friday to Wednesday and then fly to Atlantic City and stay there until the 29th. I hope they have wheelchairs.

Joan

Deb, I use a plain little "ding ding" bell, think it was $8? so many people are oblivious, or they're talking and don't hear you coming up from behind. many people use ear buds and don't hear anything except their music. the bell carries pretty well. I ring it when I'm maybe 15 feet back and am always ready to brake. some people move over, some people say "thanks" and some people ignore. if they don't do anything I either ring again or shout "on your left". what I don't want is someone stepping into my path and possibly knocking me down, or knocking DH and I into each other. things happen fast and kids and dogs are especially unpredictable.

actually the new moms with the strollers are the worst. ( sorry but it's true) they go 2-3 abreast and think they own the whole right of way. they often have a dog and maybe a toddler or three on a tricycles. predictable is what's needed, and you never know what they'll do. give them wide berth.

We "traded in" our old bikes at the bike shop when we got new ones. didn't get much for them but they could get some parts for fixing other old bikes. I don't want people coming here either. would not sell for much anyway. our new bikes shift way easier than the old ones ever did. my cables needed adjusting after a couple months. we thought we could get a book and do it ourselves but never found anything good enough and the tools needed add up quickly. once a year or so we take them in for a tune up and just pay for it.

I like the leaned forward poisture ...it's the lower edge hip bones that get sore for me, and sitting vertical makes that worse.

a high visibility jacket is not a bad thing to invest in, the screaming yellow-green is popular out here. DH likes the clipped in pedals, I prefer the loose cages. a bottle with a cap cover of some sort is good to keep the drinking port clear from road dirt.

Did garden work yesterday and the Cardio Supersets. getting close to dinner and it's a fast one.

DH has a knee problem right now too so we are a little bit restricted. Lynda, hope you are improving and taking it easy and that maybe you've come up with a modified vacation plan so it's not a total loss.

Garance I hope you are better. You helped me by mentioning that the doctor told you to keep bending your knee. I would have liked to stop walking and going up and down the stairs. Sometime today what ever was out of place slipped back into place. Knee is sore but not the sharp pain I had. I sure wish I knew what I did because I wouldn't do it again.:D

Joan

Good morning all,

Today I did High Reps, upper body pre-mix. My arms are still shaking as I type. I went really low with the weights, figuring there would be lots of reps, and Cathe did not disappoint.

Joan, that ladder was probably what did it. A lot of stress on the knee joint. Plus, it was probably the only "different" thing you had done that day, ? I hope you are ok for your vacation. How does it feel when you walk?

Valerie, I didn't even ask if they took trades at the bike shop, but I didn't get the feeling it was that kind of place, too large etc. We have a small bike shop not too far from home that I might stop in one day and just ask them their opinion on what to do with the old ones. Even if they just would take them for parts, at least someone was getting use out of them. I am definitely getting a bell. With all you do, I am not surprised that your DH has a knee problem!

Garance, give us an update. Thinking about you.

off for more coffee and to get ready,

Take care,

DH is bowlegged and has a significant deterioration of the cartilage under his patella. he;s going to get a scan and see orthopedics to be sure nothing else is going on. he may need to wear a stretchy brace to keep his knee cap from sliding around too much.

Joan, meniscal tears are pretty common. once the meniscus tears the torn part can float up and get caught in the knee mechanism. all the time or randomly. once it's torn it will not heal ...the cartilage is sort of liek shoe leather. if this continues you might want to see orthopdics. I had one of these along with my ACL problem. it is a simple surgery if that's what it is. maybe it's nothing but I wouldn't wait months for an opinion if it's consistently bothering you in the same place. Hope it just gets better with ice,Advil, and rest.

i did cyclemax last night. wow that is a sweat producer!!

Hi Ladies,

I started doing P90X last week, today is my 7th day which is a rest day, but I will be spinning tonight. I like it very much so far and I will keep you posted on my progress.
Cathe’s new series seems similar to P90X.

I needed something that is structured and that I don’t have to think about putting it together. My DB did it a couple of years ago and lost 30 pounds and he has kept it off and now he and his wife are doing Insanity.

Garance, I hope that you are doing well and that you don’t have to postpone your vacation.

Joan, good luck in Vegas and Atlantic City!

Hi to Deb and Valerie!

Josie

Valerie Ice and advil was exactly what I did. Knee is fine today. It's like nothing happened other than some slight soreness. In the past (over 10 years ago) I had a different knee pain. Exercise strengthened legs and I stopped having any pain.

Josie I agree I need something structured. Other than the first STS I have not developed the consistency I need.

Joan

Good morning all,

C25K done, I struggled a bit and walked for about 15 seconds in the second set of running. That is only a 3 minute run. I am so out of shape. I always thought it was easier running on a treadmill, but I can run longer when my cousin and I go to the track and run/walk laps.

Josie, I agree about structure, and I am really looking foward to the new series.

Valerie, your DH does quite a lot with a knee issue like that.

Joan, glad the knee is better. How is the car situation? did she end up with a realistic estimate?

Garance, check in if you are still home and let us know how you are. I guess if you are on vacation, you won't see this.

It was already 75 and hot at 4:00 am...All I can say is thank God for air conditioning! I wish I had it in the basement.

picklewave.gif
for now.

Deb, we are both concerned about the knee. he's had intermittent issues with it for several years. there's not a lot that can be done for it, possibly injections of some substance that's suppposed to stimulate cartilage formation. expensive and painful and no guarantee. we'll see how things go with the scan and go from there. He's always had an alignment problem due to the bowleggedness. one leg more than the other.

Lynda, I guess I'm assuming you and DH figured out something to do that gives you knee time to heal without too much stress. Hope you're having fun.

Joan, glad your knee is better. knees are tricky! yeah, what happened with the car damage? every time I back nout of angle parking I think about how eassy that could happen. Happy gaming...

I guess I'm the exception and do better unstructured. too much structure makes me delay delay whereas if I have a choice I can almost always find something that sounds good. I did S&G last night. I think all the burpees and sliding pushups make it a good decent strength workout, especially core, and a moderate cardio one.

New computer up and running, just resetting things so i can access regular sites. my new keyboard is almost exactly like my old one ... Delete, Home, End, and Insert in the same places in contrast to DH's where they were moved. much better. so glad this one is like the old one.

Good morning,

2 agility classes back to back last night, although Kylee's was only 1/2 hour, it was a private lesson so it was all her, no breaks. We didn't get home until after 10:00 and not in bed until 11:00. I am pretty tired. Not sure if I can do this on a weekly basis.

Valerie, it sounds like you really like your new computer. What operation system did it come with? Windows 7?

Hi to Joan, & Josie, and the hopefully vacationing Garance!

Went to yoga this morning and then did a 26 mile bike ride in 2 hours! we are getting faster. we stopped several times for bathroom stops and snack stop. a lovely morning with pleasant temps and sunshine.

deb, yes it's windows 7. working very nicely making me quite happy. the little rectangular grid with home, delete, end, insert is horizontal on my keyboard and vertical on DH's. my fingers kept going to the wrong spot on his. I've had multiple keyboards like this one and don't think I can "un learn" those movements. I did medical transcription for about 10 years so did a LOT of keyboarding.

Deb, that's so hard to go to sleep immediately. I'm always too fired up to sleep right away. takes me a good 2 hours to unwind, have a glass of wine and get ready to go to bed.

The insurance co will take care of everything from now on.

I need to finish packing and cooking the last 5lbs of apples before we leave tomorrow. I am freezing the cooked apples. I didn't want them to go to waste.

Joan

Good morning,

Decided to sleep in a bit today, still very tired from Wednesday night. It seems to take longer to recover from little sleep when you get older. I can't believe I am "saying" this, but it's true.

Valerie, planning a bike ride this weekend from our house to a city park about a mile from here, then they have a 1.8 mile bike path around a golf course. I want to do this one first, because no traffic, and it is a nice park. To up the mileage we can just keep going around. Another nice one is 5 miles out and then back, so a 10 mile round trip, but that one will need us to use the bike carrier. Maybe not a bad idea either. We'll see how we feel and how hot it is. It's supposed to cool down, and has already. It's only 63 this morning.

Joan, glad insurance will cover all the expense, hope your rates don't go up. Cooking/freezing the apples is a good idea. Can be used for a lot of things later on. I love homemade applesauce. I like it to have chunks in it. Have fun on your trip.

Josie, Valerie, looks like it will be just us for a while!

Have a good weekend, will check back later.

Deb, hope you continue to find new places to ride. It's funny, until people ride they aren't aware of trails. once you start riding you get more aware and find more places. the area. around here it's especially attuned to cycling. a lot of tax dollars have gone to community trails. there's another section of the one we usually ride that will open this fall giving us another 20 miles, 10 out and then back. it's an add-on to the existing trail. If you wanted you could ride around a significant part of the metro area on bike trails. most are built on old railroad right-of-ways so are flat and not over developed with homes or commercial property.

It's always something. dh & I fixed my vacuum after the power head suddenly stopped working. could not believe how little information came with it, and it was an expensive Miele. nothing online either, and we just wanted a diagram on how to access the brush head and belt. now my new dishwasher is not working right. it doesn't seem to heat the water. noticed about a week ago wet dishes , some not clean. thought it was just a fluke but last night I started it early and checked the water temp when it was halfway thru the cycle and it was cold. always something!! brand new so must be warranty repair but I hate it when something significant pops up right away.

Hi Ladies,

I started week 2 of P90X on Wednesday. So far I like all of the workouts, except yoga.
It was too advanced for me. I only managed to do 35 minutes out of the 90 minute workout, so I will be going to my yoga and spinning (YAS) gym to take the 60 minute yoga class for beginners and then take the spinning class for 45 min right after.

Deb, I have noticed that I don’t need as much sleep anymore. I’m good with 6 to 7 hours, but I do crash early on Friday.

Joan, I’m glad the insurance company is taking care of everything, that is what we pay for ;) Have a great vacation and win lots of money!

Valerie, once one appliance breaks down it seems like curse, the rest will follow.

I have no plans for the weekend, just grocery shopping and laundry. I might go to the beach, but have not decided yet.

Have a great weekend!

Josie
