Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 7/1/12

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did Gym Styles chest and tris (48 min.).

Deb, I like this short one because my heartrate stays way up there for practically the whole workout and I figure 30 solid minutes of high intensity cardio is really efficient. The dinner was excellent. Leftovers tonight, which I always like. DH also made a big batch of pesto with basil from our garden, which we will have the next couple days when it's going to be really hot here. I wish our tomatoes were ready to have with the pesto, but they aren't quite there yet. We really cannot have air-conditioning because we have a log cabin style home, with a lot of leakage. I don't mind though, because we are on the side of a mountain, and things cool off after about 6 and we get a nice breeze coming down from the mountain. My office is air-conditioned, and if anything, it's a bit too cool for me.

Valerie, you should count yourself lucky that you aren't part of that awful heat wave. Whenever they show the maps, it seems like the northwest is about 20 degrees cooler--at least.

Hi to Joan and Josie!

Lynda, it's a big reason why I live where i do. I always did poorly with heat and if anything it s gotten worse as i get older. just can't cool myself and too hot is not a happy ccamper for me. excuse the ridiculous number of typos until I get acclimated to this keyboard. looking at new system this afternoon but prrobably will be a while before it gets here.

So glad it wasn't too hot yesterday because the neighbors went berserk with fireworks last night. every year we write the county council about making them illegal but nothing ever happens though many many people complain. especially when today was a normal workday for most people!! don't understand why the public displays aren't adequate. the idiots have been blowing up crap for a week already, and last night was incredibly loud. some years we have fire issues but not this year.

so went to yoga and then immediately after, DH and I did a 26 mile bike ride, in 2 hrs 6 minutes, including 3 bathroom stops, 2 for him one for me. we were moving right along.
i love pesto and tmatoes, but my basil and tomatoes are at least a month away yet.
that's the downside of the cooler climate.

Good evening,

I got Crossfire today but am afraid to try it until back is a little better. It's not bad but I kept hearing Cathe say if it bothers your back don't do this. I did like what I saw with my preview viewing.

No our insurance is who is at fault. If it's 50/50 each insurance co would pay half. My only problem is how it happened. Tuesday I tried backing up with a car beside me and I seemed to see just fine. In the grocery parking lot a person stepped behind me as I was backing up and I stopped immediately. I have a 1994 Crown Vic. While the back end is short the whole car is quite long and I back out slowly. She had to have seen me because I was turned by the time I hit her. Only 1/2 or less of my bumper was scraped. I don't know how both doors and the rear panel of hers was dented. I suggested a body shop because they had painted my car a few years ago and I knew they were good. She said she ALWAYS used a different co. When I was her age I wouldn't have a clue about what auto body shop to use. My brother thinks she already had some dents and deliberately let the accident happen because she had to turn her leased car in on July 17. I'm not sure I believe that but I still think she could have avoided accident if she had paid attention.

She doesn't have estimate yet. Someone hit my brother's car while parked and just the one door was about $2000. Besides replacing the door they have to rehook up the electric and make sure paint matches or repaint whole car. There were cheaper estimates but you wouldn't have wanted to use them. I was just guessing about the cost.

The room I have treadmill in was 103 degrees an hour ago. Last night I started walking when it was 99 degrees and finished when it was 93 degrees.

Joan we have the same deal here, % FAULT. it's hard to see both directions sideways. you look both ways and slowly move backwards.... regardless backup lights would be on and if she wasn't paying attention plus going too fast, well, 90% /10% ?
sounds like she wasn't paying atention and got right behind while you were already backing.

wow, I don't exercise if it's much over 70. if I do, very gently. very. not ever going to be a heat acclimated exerciser. bike riding is OK because of the wind factor. DH's family is in fresno ...when it's hot it's unbearable. his mother has air conditioning but doesn't turn it on.even if she does barely gets to 90. I went to a friends wedding in phoenix when it was 116. I could not get the temp down at the hotel to anything even reasonable. I'd give up heat in the winter before I'd give up air in summer. my house is 64 right now and I'm happily warm.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did a premix--Cardio Supersets Express+Step (47 min.). Felt like a whole new workout, so now I have my three cardios.

Joan, your accident does sound fishy. It's too bad you didn't call the police or ask for some witnesses to confirm her version of events. The low impact Crossfire is really pretty do-able, but I wouldn't fool around with a back injury. No way I would be exercising in that kind of heat. It's bad enough here in the morning if the dewpoint is high. I just start feeling sluggish.

Valerie, I don't think I could stand all the rain you get, and I do like temps in the 80s, which is usually how it is here during the summer. I like my sundresses--yes I do! Can't wait to take off all the layers, put on those sandals, and a boho skirt and tank. (As you can tell, I love my clothes.) Our tomatoes are going to be great this year--I can just tell. My favorite food, by far, is homegrown tomatoes with probably too much salt and freshly ground pepper.

Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Good morning,

This morning I did STS Total Body ( one set pre-mix) 46 minutes. My DVD kept freezing up during the core work, not sure what's up with that. I dusted it off before putting it away. I can't remember the last time I did a workout on a Saturday. No agility class today so I thought I would get it in here now. I miss weights so this was good to do.

Joan, I would be very careful doing anything in that high heat. No way to add AC to that room with your treadmill? I agree with Garance, the accident sounds like she is taking advantage of the situation to get other work done.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Did disk #10 ysterday and I did all pushups on my toes even staggered ones. never did that before but it felt great. felt like I'd reached some kind of milestone in pushups and they felt much easier than usual. i'm trying not to drop my head since heads are heavy and make it harder I'm sure. trying to keep my eyes fixed forward so maybe that's helping.

Joan hope your insurance asks some questions. very hard to tell what dents were caused by the current accident, she might have had the side thoroughly banged up before! but I'm sure this isn't a new type of scam to an insurance adjuster.

deb is right, even a rolling room air conditioner? that is way too hot to do anything.

not sure about the backpack we'd planned might be way too hot. I can't get decent forecast with this laptop, can't get it to go to the right area. east side of the mountains is much warmer right now. DH is better able to get his bigger system to do this and I'm not proficient with his.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

If you go over to the Ask CAthe forum, you will see a response from Cathe about her next-planned series, which will be like CTX combined with STS. Another 10 dvd series. Amazing! She really goes non-stop.

Good for you on the pushups, Valerie! I will just keep trying to get past 16.

I like that she said the weight workouts wil be shorter than the STS ones...YAY!! I love the STS series, but not how long some of them are. I did it once through and keep thinking I want to do it again but the dread factor gets in the way. Maybe some day....So many workouts, so little time!

First off, there is NO SUCH THING as too much salt/pepper on home grown tomatoes..... the enzymes in the tomatoes neutralize anything remotely bad.. and tomatoes with basil pesto is heavenly.

a key thing in disk 10 is no stretches over 16 push ups. when she says, "gimme 30" I fade but if I can get 10 second breaks like in drop sets, I can keep going. at least i could yesterday. this is my 4th time thru STS but with long breaks in between. I can get thru most of the disks in an hour.
I never bothered with 1RM . I write in pencil the weight used. if i think I can increase next time, I put an up arrow, if too heavy down arrow. I put a G if used weighted gloves. speeds things up immensely. when i first did STS I did a 6 month rotation. this time is 3 months and IMO shorter is better . momentum helps.

DH likes meso 3 and has repeated it several times. I like the mixture.

we're going to try the backpack. might not be back for a few days or could be back monday. we'll see.

The treadmill is in a 1500sq foot room that encloses our 15by30ft swimming pool. It does have heat and air conditioning but I can't imagine what it would cost to cool in this heat. Of course since we keep the pool water at 85 degrees that probably doesn't help. I seldom have to heat the room because it stays 50 degrees in all but the coldest of days because of the 10 5ft by 5ft windows. It is supposed to get down to 88 degrees next week.
