Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 6/9

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Cardio Leg Blast (56 min.).

I hope this rain stops soon. I wanted to go with a friend to Great Barrington tomorrow to just walk around and look at all the interesting shops, but if it's raining, forget it.

Deb, I guess I could ask our vet whether there is anything like that around here. It would be fun, I think, for both of us.

Judy, that looks like an interesting app. Now that I have an IPad, I've been more curious about buying some apps.

Back to my writing here.

Hi Ladies,

I'm on vacation with my grandkids. We went to the Aquarium of the Pacific on Sunday, the beach and lunch on Monday and to the museum on Tuesday to see the shuttle Endevor. I'm exhausted. We are taking a day off today ;) Hanging out with the kids has been my workouts so far for the week.

Garance, sorry to hear about your son. I don't know about the girls nowadays, it is all about them. My DS has had such bad luck, he is single again.

Lory, I'm glad that you are enjoying the Insanity DVD's. My DD is on week 4 and is loving them too. I have not been able to get back on track, because after the shingles I did end up getting the flu last week. I'm hoping to start back tomorrow.

Deb, congratulation on Keegan's run.

HI Judy!

I will be back later, the kids are too quiet and need to check on them ;)

Josie

Good afternoon Ladies!

This morning was meso 3 plyo legs. Now you all know how I will feel about this workout! Loved it. Very similar to Cardio Leg Blast perhaps with a little heavier weights. Tonight the plan is to do P90X Ab Ripper.

Garance, I am with you on the rain. I am so sick of it. The sun was out this morning but I do believe it was short lived.

My son is transfering schools and has been accepted to a school in CT. This means he will be moving in with his dad in August. As sad as I will be about him leaving :( I am really thrilled I will have my basement back and be able to have a workout room once again!! :)

Josie...yes agreed, hanging with the kids is certainly a workout. Enjoy! Will not do an insanity workout on the days I do Plyo Legs. That would be way too much for me. Will just go on to the next one tomorrow.

Judy...I love technology and gadets too! My most recent purchase is a digital/nutritional scale. I love that it gives you all the nutritional facts of each item you are weighing...calories, fat sodium, etc. I have had it for a few months now and it really helps me with my food portions.

Deb...yes the Insanity workouts are tough! Although I have noticed that my heart gets higher when doing Cathe's tabatasize. I have onlu done 3 of the workouts so school is still out. If you have a picture of the cake I would love to see it!!!

Valerie...same here. After Ride or Cycle Max and I am spent.

Have a great afternoon!

Hi Everyone,

Lori-that scale sounds nice! I don't think I've seen one of those before.

Josie-sorry that you had the flu:( hope you are feeling much better now.

We have a thunderstorm watch until 2 am, looks like its going to start raining any minute.

This morning I did Spinervals 42.0, "Quads on Fire". This one is a time trial workout that is 85 minutes long. I did a cool down afterwards so I rode almost 2 hours.

Here is my garmin data:

Untitled by irongrl at Garmin Connect - Details

I'm thinking about doing X Train bi's and tri's and/or a core workout later tonight.

I spent lots of time on the phone today, it looks like FIL will have a visiting nurse and a physical therapist assigned to him for 6 weeks or so.

Hi to Lynda, Valerie & Deb!

Judy

Hi,

WOW...Judy, I thought I was the Queen of Logging...LOL....I think you have me beat...:)

Here is a pic of the cake for tonight's class:

Good morning,

No workout this morning, late, late class last night. We had a stretching class after our regular one so we didn't leave the training hall until about 10:00..plus I had a hard time falling asleep, read until after midnight....exhausted.

Garance, you can Google agility classes, or agility training in "______"...and see what comes up. I think you would really like it. What are you writing? Your office is one that is off campus now right?

Josie, I am glad that you are feeling better.....I agree l....playing with the grandkids is a workout!

Judy, so you have a chest strap or something like that to "read" your heart rate into the app? I have a simple Polar HRM that I really like. I just like to measure time and calories burned. Then I log it on my Cathe calendar in the workout area, and in MyFitnessPal....

Lori, I know you will miss your son, but a nice workout room is a good thing to have. What year of college is he in now? I have been looking at scales too. Mostly for making Keegan's food. I want to make measure the protein to Carb ratio etc. I would like one that has a large digital readout...I may go to a kitchen store, or Bed Bath & Beyond so that I can actually see it work...

Hi Valerie!

Visiting a customer in Cambridge Ontario today, so it will be a long day, then I have to go right to a HS graduation party from work, since it will start before I get back from Canada....

Take care,

Garden day yesterday. we should have done something else but DH believed the weather forecast which sounded wet....but it wasn't. Tuesday I did x train ch, ba, sh. aso core 1. I like alternating back and forth. planned on bi& tri yesterday but the garden won. so yoga this morning, bi's /tri's later.

troubles with my mother again. getting her to cooperate and do simple things, like go to bed at night instead of sleeping semi upright in her chair. she needs to elevate her legs to reduce swelling. lying flat for a few hours will help. I called to convince her, but she was unintelligible. It was 3 pm. should not have been sleeping but maybe. called back later, gave her the lecture. called back again yesterday and it seems that (for some reason) she might have listened to me. I assume my best "medical professional" voice and tell her what she needs to do and try to get her to agree to do it. she listens to me ( sometimes) but not my brother much because he's there all the time. also problems getting her washed... incontinence is an issue. SIL is being a big help there. unfortunately, her own mother is in almost the same situation so I'm concerned both she will be unable to keep up. my sister is totally AWOL and no help at all. we had physical therapist but that's finished and she doesn't do the exercises on her own. no reason, just doesn't.

Josie, sorry to hear you got the flu anyway. sometimes your number is up and no matter what preventive measures are done, you get sick. I've never been good dealing with children. I avoid it. I would have been a crummy mom and a crummier grandmother!

I have a polar HRM but stopped using it when the wrist watch died. Do one of you know if the chest strap would "connect" to anything else?

I will take a look at the scale link, and also your riding data. I have a regular digital scale I use but no nutritional info.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did KCM's Cardio Quick Fix, both workouts (44:39). I also walked Max last night for 45 min. It was so nice and sunny.

Today is another story. RAIN! So we postponed our jaunt to Great Barrington. They have so many wonderful antique stores, and I want to find an interesting doorstop for one of our doors that won't stay open when it's warm. Currently my kettlebell is the doorstop--DH's idea!

Deb, I couldn't find an agility class within 100 miles, much less the 25 miles I would be willing to go. Darn! DH seems to think he knows of someone who does this, though, so we'll see. I really think Max would love it. That cake is adorable. Sounds like you have a long day ahead of you, so I hope it's not foul weather where you are. Oh, I'm still working on that piece for a photographer who is publishing a collection of her photos. So far, about 5000 words.

Josie, it sounds like you are really enjoying your pre-retirement vacation with the grandkids. Are the shingles completely gone now?

Lori, that scale looks very interesting. So--do you think I could modify that plyo legs for impact? I do modifications on some of the Cardio Leg Blast, adjusting the height of my jumps or getting rid of impact altogether. They look temptingly shorter than the squat rack routines. Where is your son going to school?

Valerie, it must be hard negotiating with your mom long-distance. I knew at a certain point that I needed to move my mom here from Minnesota so I could watch over her. She had her own little apt. and wanted to remain independent, but I watched over her care, and she loved being close to her grandsons.

Pretty intense data entry system, Judy! I think we're getting your rain today, thank you very much.

Good mornining ladies!

Slept in this morning. Did not feel like working out I will do something tonight not sure what though.

I bought the scale on Amazon but you can also buy it from Bed Bath and Beyond. Pretty sure this is where I first saw it.

My HRM is a Polar and it is fine for me. Received this as a gift from the girls at work. I am like you Deb...I look at calories and HR and that is pretty much it. Oh and length of w/o.

Valerie, sorry to hear about your mother. This must be so hard. And even harder when a sibling is not helping.

Josie...there is a link started about Shaun T's newest workouts Focus T-25. Looks pretty much like insanity but in 25 minute workouts. I think they look pretty good and depending on the price I am going to be getting them.

Have a great day ladies!

Garance... I actually typed my response above 3 hours before iIactually sent it. Then noticed you had posted.

Yes you could modify Plyo legs. The first jump up was with 4 risers and I barely was able to do these. Everything else is pretty much the same as cardio legs. Couple moves maybe different but not much. Plus I felt it was at a slower pace true to STS style.

Nicholas is going to Mitchell College in New London, CT. I am very proud of him. He never did well in school and barely graduated from HS. Not that he isn't a smart kid...just did not want to do the work. He took a year off then went to the local community college and now transfering to Mitchell. He is very motivated and doing great.

Judy, I am NOT a technophile.... what kind of garmin thingie ( see what I mean about technology?) do you have? I love the graph showing the heart rate ups and downs. the mt bike course is more info that I'd want, I think.n still nice to get a map with the data on elevation gain/loss.
Since my Polar wrist watch broke, (chest strap still works) I don't get much feedback. my treadmill will pick up the signal, but I haven't used it much lately. I've been logging activity and points on the WW site but it's not designed for serious exercisers and is mostly a guess on my part.

My regular watch died this morning. It was a Timex Expedition that I used mostly to track length of time for hikes and rides. did not have any other monitoring ability. I have an older similar one for backup but it may be time to "upgrade" to something giving me more feedback.

so yoga first, then a short bike ride about 15 miles. DH didn't have time to go longer. I still want to get in the upper body workout. Deb, haul those bikes out! summer is half over already!!

My brother handles most of our mother's needs. she is mentally clear most of the time but can barely ....just BARELY ....walk and can't handle her personal care any more. she is beyond assisted living but not really nursing home. she loves her cats. my brother is a little grumpy but handles everything for her. everything. it's enabled her to stay in the house she's lived in since about 1950. his wife is a teacher and so this summer she will be helping with bathing. not sure what will happen in fall.... one day at a time. our sister is really not a useful part of the picture. more like another problem rather than being helpful.
She listens to me usually, though not always. I play the 'out of town" expert I guess you could say.

Hi Everyone,

We did have quite a little storm last night, sirens going off and we spent some time in the basement with the cats. I think the worst of it went right around Plymouth though.

Deb-Polar HRMs are very good. I used those until Garmin came out with a GPS running watch and HRM. Now I use the Garmin FR 60 for indoor workouts and the Garmin FR 610 for running and biking outdoors. Both watches work with one heart rate strap so that is good. I can upload workouts using an "ANT" stick, which fits into a usb slot on my laptop. As soon as I connect the stick to the computer, the data from the watch is transferred wirelessly. DH has a Garmin too, but only uses the GPS, he is not into using HRMs.

I'm still trying to figure out how to use the Cathe Workout Manager. I think Cathe's website is one of the best I've ever seen. It is so comprehensive.

Valerie-so sorry that you are having trouble with your mother. That is difficult, especially when a sibling won’t help. Looks like we have something in common too. I’ve never had children either, and I do tend to avoid them.

I think you would like the Garmin FR70:

https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/into-sports/running/fr70/prod104012.html

It doesn't have a GPS, so you wouldn't get the map, but you would get the HR graph. I have the FR60, the version previous to this one and I've been very happy with it.

You might be able to pair your Polar HR strap with another watch too, not sure.

Lori-I'll stop by Bed, Bath and Beyond and take a look at the scale, will order from Amazon if cheaper.

Hi to Lynda & Josie!

Judy

Good morning,

I took today off because I have my annual physical appointment today, didn't want to go and then go back to work..

Valerie, sorry aout what is going on with your Mom.....getting old is not fun. Hopefully she will continue to listen to you...I assume your brother tries, but she probably hears it from him and just ignores? or has he given up? Does your sister live nearby? I think the Polar chest strap ( not sure if you have an older model though) may send a signal to something else. My treadmill has a HRM on it, and came with a strap, which I do not use. When I am on it with my Polar HRM, it reads my heart rate from that. I never trusted the numbers from the treadmill one though, which is why I have the regular Polar. I have had 3 of them, and like them a lot...since you need a regular watch, you may like the Garmin set up..

Lori, thanks for the scale info...I think I will check out BB&B, and see if they have it there.

Judy, if you are having problems with the Cathe workout manager, then I don't feel so bad. I can use the calendar, but that's about it.

Garance, we are getting a lot of rain here too...awful yesterday, until about 1:00...when I was in Canada, the sun finally came out. I will check out the AKC clubs and see if there is one in your area...a long shot since you probably Googled all over...

Hi Josie!

Take care,

Never got to the upper body workout yesterday, after shopping and unloading, making dinner, talking to my mother then my brother, time ran out.
My brother is very mechanical and inventive. he gets things done. he's not the greatest communicator. I'm better at that, and I have the benefit of DH being a physician so my mother sometimes acts like she's talking to the doctor when she's talking to me. my medical background helps, but I don't over step my knowledge base. mostly common sense rules about keeping a more regular schedule, elevating her legs as much as possible etc. for whatever reason, she listens to me. my brother is there all the time and he tends to be grumpy with her. his opinion doesn't get much respect. My sister is off in left field somewhere and an added problem rather than being helpful. she has myriad health problems of her own and is always after our mother for money, which she never has enough of.

Judy thank you for the info. I will look around a little but looks like a nice step up. my HRM strap is pretty old so that won't run the decision. have never transferred that kind of data to my computer. I had several chest straps. not all worked with the newer model treadmill. I've only rarely worn a chest strap for outdoor workouts. we haven't done much with GPS though lot of outdoors people have moved to it. If you still need to carry maps /compass it seems redundant.

Hi Everyone,

The visiting nurse went to see my FIL this morning, and called me after the visit to say that apparently he fell some time in the last 2 days, he has a huge bruise on his chin, a cut on his nose, and bruises on his knees. He told her he fell 2 weeks ago, but we were there all day Saturday and he didn't have the bruises then. DH has been talking to him on the phone every day and he didn't mention anything about having fallen. The nurse checked him out and said he was ok for now, but we have an appointment with the doctor tomorrow morning. So glad they have Saturday hours.

I'll check back in later tonight.

Hope you all have a good weekend if I don't get a chance to post!

Judy

Good afternoon ladies!

no workout yesterday. Ended up being a complete rest day. Doing Insanity and STS I have a feeling more rest will be needed than what I am used too!

With that said I did Insanity Pure Cardio this morning and plan on disc 27 sh,bi and tri tonight. Forgot about my HRM AGAIN this morning! I need to tape a note on the TV or something.

No plans for the weekend other than FINALLY enjoying some sun! DH is working all weeked as Father's Day is a bz restuarant weekend. Poor guy will be wiped come Sunday night.

Judy and Valerie...again so sorry with what you both are going thru with your parents. Both my parents are deceased. Dad passed away when I was a toddler and my mom about 18 years ago. My Mom was terminally ill for a year and I was pretty much her care giver. I have 4 brothers and only two were in the area. One helped the other was useless. It was very difficult to watch and go thru and my heart breaks for both of you. Ageing parents create so many challenges and heartaches.

Have a good afternoon all.

Lori
