Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 6/23

Did Cardio supersets later yesterday, and core 1. that plus yoga is a good 2 hours and enough for a day. it's a nice mix of strength, flexibility, and cardio and spread out from 7-8 am to 4-5 pm, so it feels like different days. I finally lost another pound and broke the month long plateau. the good side of it is "slow and steady". I have established long term habits. my issue was portion control more than anything. good food, just a little too much of it.

we had thunderstoms yesterday also, and more predicted for today. we are hoping to ride today, road or mountain depending on how weather develops.

Travel fit is one workout I don't have. usually when we travel we're doing a lot of activity but when we visit "unfit and sedentary" family it might be a decent alternative. I never think much of our activity level until I spend time with people who do absolutely nothing. wow. it's a good reality check sometimes.

Deb, I ordered the dresses but took free shipping, and arrival is approx. 7/5. should have paid shipping to get them sooner.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Jazzercise Burlesque (45 min.) and managed to get in a walk with Max last night between rain storms.

It is not as hot here today as it's been, but talk about soupy! I think the dewpoint is in the 70s. Maybe it's good for your skin (Isn't that what they say about living in England, where it's always raining?), but my hair is a frizzy mess.

Deb, I just wanted to sleep in this morning too because it was dark and raining--perfect weather for zzzzz. But I managed to get going and like you, was glad I did.

Valerie, good for you on the plateau bust! If you like band work, Travel Fit is great.

Judy, DH preordered the new series for me, without the spinning workout because I don't have a bike. It's always such a bargain, and you can easily sell the ones you don't like. I immediately sold Tabatacise from XTrain because I knew it would be too much impact.

Lori, welcome back to soupy MA! It looks like rain off and on for the whole next week.

Hi Ladies,

Tomorrow is my last day and I can’t wait! My work area is clean, my reports and closeouts for my accounts have
been submitted even though they are not due until August and I have left a list of pending things to whomever
takes over my accounts.

I will be going to state line for a little R&R with my sister in laws. State line is about 35 minutes from Las Vegas, so
on Saturday we will go there for the day. There is going to be 5 of us going, so watch out!!

Garance, what time do you wake up now that you are retired? I’m a morning person, so I don’t think my schedule will
change, but at least I don’t have to worry about make-up or dressing up ;) I will probably live in my workout clothes.

Deb, hurry up and join us!

Lori, I ordered T25 and I can’t wait to get it. I will probably get it by Saturday, just in time for me to start on Monday.

Hi to Valerie and Judy.

Josie

Hi Everyone,

This morning I walked 4 miles. I'm planning to do another workout later tonight. Not sure what yet.

Tomorrow will be a long day. We have to be in Ann Arbor by 7 AM to take FIL to an early doctor appointment, then he will be getting some sort of assessment to evaluate his gait instability and determine what kind of help he needs to stay safe in his house. I'm not sure what to expect, but I'm planning that we will be there most of the day..

Deb-We did get pretty bad thunderstorms last night.
I've done training plans using Spinerval workouts but the Cathe rotations are on another level  I know I can follow STS, but some of the other rotations are a little intimidating.

Lori & Lynda - I'm really tempted to order the new workouts and downloads too, I'll have to make a decision soon though:confused:

Valerie-Good job on breaking your plateau!

Josie-Congratulations! Have a great day tomorrow!

Judy

Good morning all,

Had a great time in class last night, Keegan was having fun and doing things that I didn't expect him to do. He seems to be feeling so much better these days.

Lori, have a safe trip back! I bet it will feel great to be home.

Valerie, you sure did a nice variety of workouts the other day. I cannot imagine doing 2 workouts a day, maybe when I reitre. :)

Garance, I hear you on the humidity and hair issues...ugh...I hate it. That is why when we go to somewhere like Arizona for my work meetings, one of the good things is that I always have good hair days. Not like Cancun..the most humid place of all of Mexico I think. Listen to me, complaining about my hair when I am on a free trip to Mexico..!

Josie, Happy Last Day of Work!! Woo HOO!!

Judy, hope all goes well with your FIL apts today.

Had to go get bloodwork done at 6:00 am this morning, routine after my physical last week. He is checking thyroid though because my hair person said that the amount of hair I lose is excessive....I think it's a lot, but am not upset by it. I have really thick hair and you can't tell that I lose gobs of it every day. I shed more than the 2 dogs put together...(of course my dogs are a breed that doesn't shed anyway)..

Work, then NOTHING!

Take care,

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did disk 30 STS for sh, bis, tris (64 min.). I also took Max for a walk last night. I confess that meso 3 is rather boring and I will be glad when it's over. You can tell that a lot of it is repeated from week to week, so you hear Cathe saying some of the same things. I also know that after it's done, I will probably say, "I can't believe I did the whole thing!"

Josie, congrats and high fives! I still get up at 6:15 every morning except Saturday, when I sleep in until 7:30. I like to get my workout done and then look at the vast expanse of the rest of the day with the leisure of doing whatever I want to do.

Judy, I hope everything goes well with your fil and the assessment is that he can stay in his own home, since it sounds like he really doesn't want change.

Deb, Keegan does sound like he's hit his stride and is feeling healthy enough to show off his stuff. I still wish there were something like that around here for Max and me. Max did have a very big night last night though. DH gets up in the middle of the night to load chickens, and then they have a big drive to where the chickens are slaughtered. They stop along the way at a park where Max can enjoy himself. He gets a marrow bone to chew on in the truck, which is a super thrill for him.

Back to soupy Mass yet, Lori? More torrential rain predicted.

DH and I get up between 4 and 5:30 depending..... he usually works out before work, but that's only been 2 days a week for ages now. I sometimes sleep a little longer. if he gets up at 4 to exercise, I get up usually by 5:30 at latest. Never been able to sleep much later but it's difficult when we visit people who keep more "normal" hours. both of us have trouble sleeping if we stay up too long after normal bedtime, and don't find it possible to sleep longer in the morning to compensate. so we usually come home from visiting family dead tired.

IMO most things/activities are better & less crowded early in the morning, and I like that temps are cooler.

Judy, best wishes for dealing with FIL. My mother has been having increasing problems the last few weeks, unclear what is going on, but she is still at home. brother has gotten SIL involved for bathing which is working better than the person he'd hired. I need to call the doc this afternoon and try to get some input on her labs and what he thinks is happening. probably nothing good. some people don't do well in assisted living, others adapt easily.

Deb, the 2 workouts are completely different activities and separated by 8 hours so it doesn't feel taxing at all. yoga again this morning ( we did backbends!!) and I'll do some cardio or cardio weight thing from 4-5.

Humidity and hair, a topic near and dear to me. my hair is slightly curly and gets stringy and wavy from it. looks absolutely ugly. I never go anywhere (purposely) that's warm and humid. cool and humid isn't much better. my flat iron is always ready to go! I hated Florida more than I can say, and Hawaii wasn't a lot better. never been to mexico and never will.

Hi ladies!

I am back. Tough few days. Then the drive yesterday was horrendous. Left PA at 10ish and did not get home until 6:50pm. Ridiculous. Traffic was terrible. Slept in this morning and was hoping to be able to workout tonight but was having a hard time keeping awake driving home from work. So...after typing this I am going to bed. Will catch up on all the posts tomorrow!

Have a great night all!!

Hi Everyone,

Deb-I hope your blood tests all come back good. I have been losing hair too, for several years. I'm like you, I have thick hair so I don't think it's noticeable.

Valerie-I'm sorry about your mother, I hope you can get some good information from her doctor.

Lori-I'm glad you made it home safely, I hope you get lots of rest tonight.

Hi Josie & Lynda!

Thanks for the good wishes regarding FIL. His doctor and the social worker are very concerned about his safety and well-being and they would like to see a home health care person going to FIL's house to help with bathing and other things. He doesn't want that, but he may not have a choice if he wants to continue to live in his house. His doctor also said he can only drive to the grocery store by his house, no further. He is concerned about FIL getting lost or having an accident. DH and I take him almost everywhere now as it is, since we don't want him driving either.
The social worker also suggested we get FIL's daughter more involved in his care, but she lives in Colorado and is kind of detached from the situation. I don't think she wants to be directly involved:(

On a positve note, I found a step on Craigslist for $25.00. We had to drive 45 minutes to get it, but it was worth it. It's this one:

Amazon.com: The Step F1011W Original Health Club Step: Sports & Outdoors

and it looks like it was never used. Now I have everything I need to start STS:D

Judy

Good morning and Happy Friday!

I did a Cardio Coach this morning, whew it is muggy out today.

Garance, yes, I remember Meso 3...and all the fast forwarding...I did like the workouts though. I too wish you could find some agility training classes nearby, it is so much fun, and Max is a natural. Herding breeds are the best in agility. I will check out the AKC site as well...there should be something in your area.. anything close to you here?
http://www.akc.org/clubs/search/index.cfm?RequestTimeout=90

Valerie, even with 2 different workouts, and a span of 8+ hours between, I could not do that....maybe if I wasn't working....Ahhh retirement....can't wait. You sound like me.....I don't like going anywhere with humidity...ugh...when we are in Mexico, my hair was pulled back the whole time.

Lori, welcome back...you deserve the rest day!

Judy, your FIL is lucky to have a son and DIL that care so much. Good score on the step!

Josie, Happy Retirement!!

Work, then relaxing, maybe some laundry, agility class tomorrow and a haircut....what an exciting weekend right? What's everyone else up to this weekend?

Take care,

I did two workouts again yesterday. yoga in the am and treadmill from 4:30 to 5. I haven't used the treadmill in a long time so thought 2 miles at 2% was good enough. It was fine, I feel good this morning. no sore spots at all. I'd gotten away from using it because there's nothing to watch on TV anymore. at least I could watch the early edition evening news. hard to believe going thru all those channels and nothing, just nothing even remotely entertaining or interesting.

I don't go anywhere humid. I hate the feeling of wet and clammy skin. I can't sleep, my hair is a mess. used to make my skin break out too, but I finally outgrew that issue.

Judy that is a hard one.... taking away the car keys. my mother gave them up easily. she was never a good driver and even living there her entire life she could get lost in a second. she has played the "helpless" card her entire life and was able to get other people to take her everywhere. she was probably always a bad driver so it's just as well.

we are finally getting some very warm and dry weather and that means ( big drumroll here) it's time to stain the deck. nasty job. need to do it ever 3 years or so. nice having a big deck but a total PITA power washing and then staining. we built the deck just before Trex and similar materials were coming into the market, and our contractor didn't recommend them then. would love to replace.

Hi ladies!

Well i would like to say I am well rested but this is not the case. Chester decided he needed to be a pain. Must be getting back at me for leaving and no one taking him for his walks.

I did not work out this morning. Wow, can't remember going this long with no workouts. needed the rest. Tonight I plan to pick up where I left off with STS. I think I am on Disc 33. Then a brief run on TM unless it is nice then i will make my dog happy and go for a walk. Been rainy here today.

Tomorrow I am doing the Warrior Dash with 7 other coworkers. Wish me luck! Here is the link if you would like to see what the heck I am up against. Our group starts at 11AM. I am the oldest of the group. Still do not know how they talked me into this.

Adventure Race Obstacles | Warrior Dash

Valerie...I love double workouts and agree if the are spaced out enough morning then late afternoon, evening then it is not as taxing on your body and enjoyable.

My hair is a frizzy mess right now. In this weather I pretty much wear it up all the time.

Judy...so sorry to hear of your FIL good for you on the great step purchase. That is a steal!

Josie...I have not purchased T25 yet. Did you order the additional Gamma DVD's? Just curious.

garance...same here...even on weekend I like to workout early and be done with it!

Have a great weekend ladies. I will post tomorrow evening to let you know how I did in the Dash!

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did All Out Low Impact Hiit, premix 1 with core 1 (49:22). Took Max for a walk last night too.

Deb, I will have to check out an agility club that looks like it is based in Lenox, which is about 40 miles away. Thanks for the link. Off to Jacob's Pillow tomorrow for Compagnie Kafig, a Brazilian Hip-hop troupe that was absolutely breathtaking last year. All men and very acrobatic. I hope it doesn't rain.

Judy, that sounds very complicated with your FIL. He wants to maintain his independence and not be an invalid, but he is too fragile. Is it just the distance that prevents his daughter from involvement?

Valerie, I guess I am wrong about the Northwest. I thought it was pretty rainy-humid where you live. I guess I have seen too many episodes from The Killing in Seattle, where it is raining all the time. It's on again, by the way, and I hope they just have the crime solved by the end of the season instead of prolonging it like they did last time into a second season. Mireille Enos is wonderful in it.

Welcome back, Lori! Good luck on the race tomorrow.

Happy retirement Josie!

Enjoy the weekend everyone!

It rains here often (NOT as much as in The Killing) but the relative humidity is not usually unpleasant. Nov/Dec can be quite rainy! lots of cloudy days . doesn't rain much at all in summer. cool air doesn't hold as much moisture as warm air. higher humidity than California but not HUMID like the southeast. or like the Midwest, when they get a surge of gulf air. Eastern WA is usually quite dry, more California-like. mostly it's not bothersome though drier would be nicer. Getting my hair wet in the rain doesn't enhance anything either, so I have a lot of hoodies! still, my flat iron is my most reliable hair tool.

we were watching that series ...I'm forgetting if we saw two seasons? thanks for the reminder.... I'll check the Netflix standing. it was seeming to go nowhere fast, but I agree on Mireille Enos. we are finishing up Breaking Bad in the next few days. there were some slow sections and we watched it VERY spread out so it's hard to remember who knew what and when they knew it. also the last season did not have subtitles and the detective BIL Hank.. I miss a lot of what he says. the last season is great, very exciting! don't know the ending yet.

Lori a long tedious heavy traffic drive like that is very exhausting. Give yourself a break. take couple days rest time to recharge your batteries.

Hi Deb, Lori, Lynda, Valerie and Josie,

This morning I did a long Spinerval, 1 hour and 50 minutes. We had more thunderstorms today and the forecast looks like rain for the next several days.

Valerie-DH is pretty close to taking away FIL's keys, but we are hoping that he will give up driving on his own. I think he is afraid to drive much now anyway so I don't think it will be too hard for him to give them up. Good luck with the deck. We just have a small one,so not too hard to wash and stain.

Lori-good luck with the Warrior Dash! That sounds like so much fun! I've never done an adventure race before. I'm looking forward to hearing about it!

Lynda- it is very complicated. FIL doesn't really understand how much work it is taking for everyone to keep him "independent". Personally, I think he should have sold his house about 10 years ago and moved to a condo or apartment. I just feel so bad for DH because that house has become such a burden to him. My SIL tried to help last summer after FIL fell the first time, but things didn't go well. I think his house and the hoarding got to her. She didn't seem to want to come back after she left. She does have a lot of things going on at home. I email her updates about her dad and try to get her involved, because I think she will regret it someday if she doesn't try to spend time with him now. She is coming to visit next month.

Good night,

Judy

Good morning all,

We went to our favorite place for breakfast this morning, yum...

valerie, did you start watching Downton Abbey? I know we have mentioned it here, but do not remember if you were watching it...if not, that would be a good one to use for the treadmill. Now that the weather is getting better, you probably want to b outdoors.

Lori, WOW! do you do all of those obstacle things in the race?

Garance, I also thought it was pretty wet and humid in the northwest, my SIL lives in Seattle and always jokes about the rain. I hope that place is not too far for agiliy...you may be able to call them and they may know of a closer place to you...these are all AKC sanctioned clubs, but there are a lot of non-sanctioned ones around.

Judy, hopefully your FIL will give up his keys willingly. My MIL made the decision herself, but it was because her eyesight was bad and she knew that she could not get a license renewed without an eye exam that she could not pass. I was really close to starting to have that conversation with my DAD, and knew it was going to be diffiicult...he had said one time, "if you take my car away, you might as well kill me"...so I put it off tried to convince him to stay close to home, which he pretty much did....then he passed away before we got to the point of having to make the decision. Maybe your SIL will help more once she sees the recent situation. My cousin had to get her father into assisted living, he has memory problems, and he is miserable now. Everyone is different I guess.

Agility class, then a haircut this afternoon...quite the lively life right?

Just a quick note..

Deb-FIL has very bad memory problems. His short term memory is pretty much gone. He is also starting to forget people. One of his relatives that he was very close to at one time (they moved away 2 years ago) called him and he didn't know who they were. They told DH right away out of concern for FIL. FIL also asks me questions like he isn't sure who I am (I married DH in 2007, FIL was in good health and was at the wedding). I am afraid one of these days he is going to ask DH who I am :( DH thinks he would be miserable in assisted living and that is why we are trying so hard to keep him in his house. I don't know how much longer that will work.

I started watching Downton Abbey last year. Very good choice for spending time on a treadmill or spinning bike.

Judy

Lori, that looks like a riot? does each team member do the whole course or is it split up?

we did a ride this morning, 30 miles. pretty warm and humid but not too bad riding. I feel dirty and sticky from road dust and sunscreen..... need to hit the shower soon. My dresses came, almost a week sooner than the shipping suggested. too dirty to try anything on now.

Yesterday I didn't plan time well and ran a mile on the treadmill, did 40 pushups, and core 1. that was it.

We've been hearing peacocks calling for a couple weeks now. I saw one about 2 weeks ago crossing the road (early) on my way to yoga. this morning while we were getting ready to ride, we looked out the window and there were 3 peacocks not 3 feet from our front door. cat was huddled down there watching them. they are HUGE. no idea whose they are, or if someone dumped them here. Anyone have any ideas on dealing with peacocks??
