Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 6/12

Good evening,

Back from funeral. Garance you are right. Mil has been bad for 3-4 years. It is more of a blessing that she passed. I would not have wanted to live bed ridden in constant pain. Most of the time she could not stay awake. Son from Portland had seen her when we thought she would die before but he wanted to come to the funeral. Of course I am thrilled to see him and whole immediate family will be here for Father's day.

My mother lives with us and is doing pretty well. Sprained knee and sore hip have healed and she is walking in the house. We still use the wheelchair for trips because she would get too tired. We got the socks Thursday but they hurt her toes so she took them off. I wrapped her legs and tried to stretch toe area of sock. Of course her legs started to swell so we are seeing OT on Monday. I think I have fixed the socks and if we get her leg down I can get them on her.

My brother is not as extreme as the TV situations ( as far as I know) but he does collect things. can't pass up anything that's free or cheap even if not needed. and then he has to store it all somewhere. He has cars parked at houses of family and acquaintances etc. Our mother relies on him for everything and has been understandably lenient on letting him pile up stuff at her house. But if he develops significant health issues I don't know what will happen. He had an episode last week that sounds like a possible precursor to a stroke and had an mri & ct scan friday. My sister lives nearby but is in very poor health and won't be able to deal with this. SIL seems to have washed her hands of the whole situation and is not involved. I have no idea what my brother's house looks like. I think (optimistically) it's a few steps worse than poor housekeeping and not a health or safety situation.

Cathy... wish I could send some rain and clouds your way. this has been a non-summer here, as crummy as I can remember. cold, clouds, rain. Our garden is sitting there doing little but growing lettuce. and slugs. they are everywhere. no hiking because of too much snow.

Joan, I think I had your MIL and mother mixed up, or thought they were the same person. Like with my FIL recently, it feels OK when someone in such poor health passes on.
