Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 6/10

Yes, go look at bikes with an open mind. you don't "need" skinny tires and dropped bars. My neighbor is our age. I talked her into getting a bike. she thought she was 'too old". well, she and her DH ride now several times a week when the weather is nice. she got a slightly fatter tire bike with upright bars and loves it. she's not much of an exerciser otherwise but this works. she takes her grandkids riding too. Such a great example for the girls. you need a helmet. otherwise not much.
we always take bikes on vacations. a car rack eliminates jamming into the back of the car where they get tangled & banged up. look up the car model at Thule or Yakima and they show what works. roof, trunk, or hitch racks. Bike stores usually have a few because how else are you going to get your new purchase home? also a cable and padlock to keep them safe.

we are taking off for a long weekend. will take our mt bikes. also hiking. back on wed sometime.

Linda I will google you too. the first Alien/s were so good!! I didn't sleep for a week after watching. such a great blend of suspense and action. Loved Ripley! one of the first and best female action heros. Sigourney Weaver was perfect.

Happy Friday Ladies,

We get to leave early today due to commencements at UCLA. I have not worked out at all this week, but plant to start again next week. My grandkids are visiting and I plan to take them to the park and the beach so that we can get a workout in everyday.

I love Sigourney Weaver! Did anyone see Death and the Maiden? It is a bit dark, but she and Ben Kingsley are great in it.

I will be having a small BBQ this weekend to celebrate Father’s day with my dad, DH and DS.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Josie

Good morning,

Unless we drove to bike trails, there is no safe place to ride here. When we are in Portland to see ds, we are amazed at the difference for both bikes and pedestrians.

Went to wipe up a spill on the kitchen floor and did something to my back. I could barely get back up. I had to have Elliot pick up everything for me because I couldn't bend over without pain. I was babysitting at their house and wondered if I could get Luke into his crib. I ended up having him stand on the sofa so I could pick him up. I slept on an ice pack and it seems to be a little bit better.

Joan

Joan, Portland is a great bike town. especially downtown. you can bike or walk almost everywhere.
I used to live in Vancouver, WA right across the river. we usually drove somewhere with the bikes on a car rack. I like urban trails but like country roads better. lots of the farm and wine country south and north of Portland is great riding. the last 10 years or so many communities (out west, anyway )have invested heavily in bike trails. lots of them use old railroad right-of-ways. my tax dollars at work!

I haven't seen Death & the Maiden but will check netflix. Love both those actors.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning I did Athletic Training (56 min.).

Josie, I remember Death and the Maiden. Revenge served cold is always sweet. Sigourney Weaver has a TV series this fall. She will be playing a Hilary Clinton type of character apparently. I have always liked her. She was hilarious in Ghostbusters and Working Girl.

Deb, "Dogs in the City" is on CBS. I just think you would enjoy it, given your love of dogs. If you really want to find the article, it's titled, "Medusa, Grendel, and Now Alien." Not sure Film Quarterly is online though.

Weather should be beautiful this weekend, but I am still trying to clean out my office and pack things up. Archives coming this afternoon to pick up a big load of stuff. Yippee!

Oooh, sorry about your back Joan! No idea what you pulled?

Hi to Valerie!

Josie, I put that movie on my netflix list.

Lynda... wow. you got a whole lot more out of the movie than I did. That is absolutely fascinating. I skimmed over the whole article but am not getting it to print. I'd like to read it again when we re-watch the movie, which we will be doing and I don't want to lose track of it. . I haven't seen Alien in many years but I will watch with a different perspective.
I want to say I'm sorry for spelling your name wrong all this time.

Joan, hope your back gets better soon. Careful with lifting those heavy children. getting the wrong angle can put you out of the game for a while.

Happy Weekend all,

I had a crappy night's sleep, could not get to sleep until after 1:00 am, then up at 5:30.

Anyone watch Nick Wallenda walk across the falls? We turned it on when he was about half way over and watched him finish. It had to be awesome in person.

Garance, I googled the title and the whole article came up. Very imprressive I never did see the movie though. I will set up to tape that dog show.

Joan, hope your back was just a pulled muscle, and is better.

Valerie, have a good trip.

Josie, after that ride, you deserve a break from working out.

Any exciting plans for the weekend?

Good Morning Deb.. I missed the Niagara falls walk. I'd read a long article about the expense & issues involved but didn't notice when the walk was supposed to happen. I thought it was in the distant future. surprise. Glad he made it. I don't do too well with heights and balance... that would be hard to watch.

Inspired by a range of things, I'm on a serious diet/ adjustment in eating plan. I'm not fat, I'm bulky. I do all this work and the muscles don't show because there's a layer over them. No starvation. I drink too much wine and eat too big a portion of good food. I don't eat junk so that's not an issue. I'll report on my progress. I'm not positive what my goal should be. my old scale always weighed 5+ lbs under the doctor office scale. when I weighed 135 on that scale I looked good. that was quite a few years ago. I have big bones and big muscles, not a delicate build. but I can look better than now.
Repeated STS #2 yesterday and now feel I can move on doing each disk once. wanted to be sure my shoulder was "Ok to go". warmed up with 30 on the treadmill.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning was Housemax. I am in my boxes-everywhere office at the moment and trying to figure out what to pack next. Looked at my new office yesterday. If anything, it's a bit larger than this one and it's on the ground floor of a Victorian "painted lady," with a big bay window on one side. I think I'm going to like it a lot.

Hey, glad you enjoyed that article on Aliens, Valerie. I think it's probably the best of the four films because of Ripley's fierce protection of Newt. I was very upset with the third film, with Newt dead and Ripley impregnated with an Alien Mama. That one was directed by David Fincher and he actually had shots from an alien's point of view. How stupid is that?! So how are you going to tweak your diet? Less wine and smaller portions? I'm pretty stable at 136 right now, but I wish I could lose some weight around the middle. The menopot. Yep, it's Lynda with a y.

Deb, I saw that walk over Niagara Falls. Yikes! The next one planned is over the Grand Canyon.

Hi to Josie and Joan!

Lynda... I "got" a lot of Alien's feminist points. I totally missed the resemblance of the tissue to female genitals. duhhh... right over my head. (Kind of like when I totally did not "get" that Moby Dick was a phallic symbol... I thought it was a fish story) Need to re-watch Alien. I will re-read your article right before so I'm on high alert. I will re-read it anyway, I did a fast skim thinking I'd get it to print but I guess it's read only.

I've been decreasing portions and cleaning up my diet in general over the last month. more fruit and vegies. whole grain salads for lunch like quinoa. not replacing things I don't need to have around. my jeans are looser already. I love my wine, mainly white, but discovered I can have some red now with no stuffy nose anymore. a glass of fruity red seems more substantial and feels like "more" than a glass of white.
Bit to lose lbs, quantity has to get cut. careless snacking has to go. I have been quite stable for years, but stable at a weight that is a little too high. I believe I can be stable at 15 or so pounds less than I am now without being in semi starvation mode. I can get too excited (or too depressed) with frequent weighing so I'm going more on how my clothes fit for a while. Depends too on where the pounds decide to come off. we'll see how it goes. I'm bigger around the middle than I used to be too, but I'll take a loss anywhere!

we didn't leave today as planned, looked at new cars. will leave early tomorrow.
