Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 5/25

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did All Out Low Impact Hiit with Core 1 (48:33).

Judy--I sympathize. DH spent the better part of 3 days cleaning out all of the stuff our sons left behind in their bedrooms and either dumping it, packing it up for them (sports plaques and trophies, baseball cards), or taking it to Goodwill. I hope the drug ameliorates some of those symptoms for you FIL.

Lori, I will try to be enthusiastic for you, Deb, and Judy on the preorder. I'm skipping this one altogether and will wait to see what they look like. I just remember being horrified by the clip of that streaming one--hiit on the step. No Way I would be doing that to this old body. You young'uns will have to do them for me.

Valerie, that is so heartbreaking about your friend.

Another conference coming up in the fall in England in Sheffield. Trying to decide whether I want to go and deliver a paper.

Hi to Deb and Josie!

Did a mt bike yesterday for about 90 min. a little muddy but fun. we've had a wet year and some things don't look like they will ever dry out. went to yoga and had my annual physical this morning. will do something else later today. likely upper body weights. plan on a road ride tomorrow. my physical went well, all A-OK she said I'm the healthiest patient she has... of course if this compares me to the folks in the waiting room this morning it's not exactly a huge compliment. I then stopped for some wine at the pharmacy (the best prices and selection these days...crazy!) and the checker asked me for ID. Yeah, right. But it did put me in a jolly frame of mind for a while! I'd just filled out this form where I promised to make sure my rugs were non skid, that I had good lighting on my stairs, cords were ticked away, pets were not underfoot, etc to "prevent falls". all I could think of was my biggest chance of falling is by going too fast downhill on my mt bike....

I don't even want to think about cleaning out family members houses. mine will be bad enough. DH and I seem opposites on what to keep and what to pitch so it ends up a stalemate. my mothers house...OMG don't want to think about it. my brother can't throw anything away. we will need a dozen dumpsters.... my sisters house is a nightmare too, and both her kids are AWOL.
Judy hope the med helps ... at least to slow progression. good thing he's where he will get care.
Lynda, I haven't looked closely but I think I'll be skipping the presale too. I do other activities so I don't really get tired of the many workouts I already have. I don't do them as frequently as many of you do.
we are fussing with Chromecast. it was easy to set up. we were watching some u-tube videos at first didn't work well, but we rebooted and then it worked much better. the test will be the evening news live stream. If this doesn't work we may ( I can't believe DH said this....) buy a ipad and apple TV. he is hard to get motivated but is like a freight train once he gets moving.

Good afternoon,

A lazy day today, my cousin and I went for pedicures and facials. So relaxing!

Josie, what happened that you needed an electrician? Send the pics, I will definitely post them here.

Lynda, Congratulations on being invited to deliver a paper! I hear you on the pre-order having to be all the workouts. I think Cathe did that with a previous set/bundle, then ended up breaking them down to individual workouts after they were shipped etc. I don't remember which set that was though. I sold most of the ones from the last "unnamed" bundle. The one with Rockin step etc. If you get them in the preorder, you can get your money back when you sell them on Ebay or Amazon, but it is a pain.

Valerie, that Google Chrome stick sounds interesting...you can use it with the laptop and then show the movie or TV show that you download/stream on your large TV? Sorry your friend is not doing better.

Lori, did you see the Outtakes on the new KCM? cute and so like Kelly to put them on the DVD. Love your fireplace project. What a clever way to use the space that a pool once occupied!

Judy, I hope the new med for your FIL has some positive effects. My uncle has sundowners too and it takes some time to find the right med for it, but when they do, they seem to work. He has been good for a while now...once in a while he gets confused about where he is though and calls my cousin to come and pick him up. So sad.

only more days of vacation left...:(

Take care,

Good evening ladies!

No workout this morning and tonight I only took chester for a walk. Was nice out and he knew it. Walked in the door and he had his leash in his mouth saying ok...the rain is over so take me please!

Lynda...congrats to you! I would say yes go to England!!! You were funny about the workouts. You need to give yourself more credit. You do some great workouts. There are some 20 year olds that could not keep up with you.

Deb...yes I loved the outtakes! I only have the one dvd so I imagined she put them on both. Cathe should do this too. Would be great!

Valerie...good job on the physical! Congrats on being carded too! Always makes my day when this happens. I LOVE my Ipad! I have the Ipad 2 and plan to upgrade once the next generation comes out. My DH and I each bought one and use it for so many things. Matter a fact I am typing this on it right now. The other day we were on the patio and wanted to stream a move but we only had our old tube TV out there but no problem..with the proper cables we streamed from Netflix and then from Amazon. It was so nice sunday morning I streamed my Barre workout out there! Worked out nicely. I do all my streaming to my TV from my Ipad.

Judy...that is such hard work. I feel for you. Can't imagine doing all that. Hoping the meds help your FIL. I think you will like the gym intervals with your bike. I do not have this one but I bet you will be like Deb mentions how Kelly is ridiculously fast. I imagine you will be the same but on your bike.

Josie...i am such a late packer. I always do it the night before. Wish I could be that organized!!!!

I am about to review Cathe's live class. I have done all of them but this one. I love her live classes!

Have a great night!

If you get carded at this age, well, they must be carding everyone who can walk, and maybe some who can't. still kind of fun.....

the chromecast/laptop did not work well enough. we can get the livestream on the news channels but the quality is pretty crummy. goes from "good" to broken up and jerky every little while. simply not watchable. I don't need "perfect" but this is not good. we streamed a bunch of old music videos from u-tube and those came thru great but the live news stream.... not so much. picture freezes. lose audio or lose picture on and off. the quality is good on the desktop and laptop, but going to the TV something happens. Our TV is 7 yrs old, a Panasonic plasma and the laptop is about a 2 year old HP so not old, obscure off-the-wall brands.
the chromecast stick is only $35 but we will return it and the roku box. the set up was not hard. will see what apple product will work best. the roku box works fine but my understanding is the systems are exclusive. apple is a separate set up so we need to go with one operating system or the other. this doesn't work well enough. our cousin has an apple set up as do my neighbors, so that is next on the list. actually, that is the entire list. if it doesn't work, we are stuck with cable. we want to take some time to go hiking / riding so probably not for a week or so .

Good morning!

It's already Friday, where did the week go? I plan on doing a workout, then if it warms up a bit, some garden work.

Lori, LOL at Chester and his "not so obvious" request for a walk!

Valerie, good physical results! I also had mine the other day and all was good except for my very high cholesterol count. My HDL is very high, so the DR accepted my decline for any meds, said if I lost 10 pounds it would significantly improve the total number. I guess I have been given a "mission". Maybe that is what I needed to get myself back on track with eating. I hope the Apple solution works for you and the streaming etc. I didn't realize you had an iPad, or maybe you have the iPhone...?

Stuff around here for today, then agility class tonight,

Have a great day!

Deb, we don't have an ipad or iphone. that is the big deal, this is a way more expensive choice and we haven't used apple before. I did long long ago but it's distant memory 20+ years ago.
we've been all Microsoft because DH needed to for work...the program the hospital & clinics used was Microsoft. had to be compatible. it seems everyone I talk to who's streaming uses an ipad. maybe that's just coincidence, or maybe it works better. all live outside of big cities where maybe the other streaming options are better.
DH did a reset and some adjustments this morning and it's better but still jerky even on the best station. the other 2 are not as good. we don't know how to further isolate the problem area. maybe it's our laptop? we don't want to buy a new one. seems to work fine and has a new hard drive besides. I think we will return the roku and the chromecast and give this a rest. we want to do some traveling this next week and have to be under the 15 day return policy at Best Buy. that will give us a chance to visit cousin again and view more closely how his set up works.
ended up not doing anything other than yoga yesterday. today is finally dry so we will ride after it warms up some.

Hi Ladies,

Just sitting here having my cup of coffee and watching the news. Our flight leaves at one and we should arrive in SF around 2:30. Can't wait to go to the pier to get my clam chowder in a sourdough bowl :).

I went to my body pump class yesterday and kept it light. I'm getting the butterflies now :).

Deb I will start sending you pictures on Sunday evening. Thanks you again for posting them for me.

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Flextrain (56:36). I would have taken Max for a walk last night, but he was utterly pooped from his long truck ride taking chickens to a USDA inspection slaughter house. They leave about 3 A.M. after loading the chickens. He gets so excited the evening before that he "guards" the truck. He gets a marrow bone to keep him busy on the ride, and a couple stops along the way there and back. Today they are off to pick up piglets, but it's not as far. He is still hyped up.

Valerie, I had the same experience being carded at the airport when I ordered a beer with my pizza slice. I think they are required to card everyone though, because I noticed even older customers coming in and chuckling over being carded. Good luck on the streaming without a cable! Sounds very complicated.

Deb, the conference is at a very far north University in Sheffield--close to where Ted Hughes was born and spent his childhood: Yorkshire, the dales, the moors and Pennines. It's also Bronte country. I have never been that far north, just to the lakes. Good for you on your physical. My doctor thinks my HDL:LDL ratio is excellent, even though my overall cholesterol is 213, so he never recommends meds for that. By the way, if you are looking for a substitute for fish oil, he recommends walnuts, which apparently have a lot of omega 3s.

Lori, I really can't do what I did 10 years ago. I was still doing the IMax's then with fast feet shuffle, plyos and tuck jumps. Now I know that my knees would never stand that kind of punishment without an injury. I had a couple years where I was getting cortisone shots every 6 months for my knees because of chronic pain, so I am very thankful that I have had no pain in my knees for a couple years now and I treat my knees very, very gently in exercise. I was really hoping Cathe would at least consider a modifier in her cardio, but she never does.

Looking forward to those pics, Josie! Yum--love clam chowder and love the idea of a sourdough bowl.

Good evening ladies!

No workout at all today. Did not sleep well and worked late tonight. Hoping to do Cathe's live class in the morning then heading off to work. :(. I am so in the weeds. Hate to go in on a saturday but it will make next week easier for me.

Josie...wow it is here! So happy for you. How many years have you done this? Hoping they have it on the news down this way. Can't wait for the pictures!

Lynda..I did not realize at one time you did the high impact workouts. So sorry about your knees. I fear this happening to me some day. All and all I did mean what I say about you beating out 20 year olds. Matter a fact we all should be proud of ourselves with the workouts us pentagenarians do day in and day out. I too wish Cathe would have a moderator. I think this would draw more people to her workouts.

Valerie...I would be so fustrated after all you have done just trying to stream. Like I said I have had great luck with my Ipad. Works well with Itunes, amazon, netflix and love that I can stream YouTube workout videos too!

Deb...I agree with you about how quickly this week flew. The holiday really really can mess with you!

Hi to Judy!

Have a great night!

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

Took Max for a walk last night and it was Housemax for me today.

Lori, enjoy the high impact as long as you can! I certainly have no regrets, but it did take me awhile to adjust to a new assessment of what my body could and could not do without repercussions. I was doing a lot of Leslie for awhile, and if I go through another period of injury or pain, I will pull her out again, even though she drives me crazy with her cackling and shrieking. I am doing a little bit of impact here and there now, and I never go over a 6 inch step. Some impact is good for bone density, so I don't avoid it altogether.

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend!

My knees are good yet but I'm more careful than I used to be. one ACL repair is enough! I think injury risk is enough of a concern to minimize impact... not to "nothing", but less than Cathe does. I still run on the treadmill and will do a little jumping. DH has had knee problems from loss of cartilage due to being very bow legged... uneven wear. he rides more now for exercise, rather than running, so he can hike without worrying.
I'm just more cautious and don't see any big benefit from doing major mileage or high impact jumps. if my heart rate is up, muscle mass is maintaining, and bone density is good, I'm happy.

did a 30 mile ride yesterday. sure makes a difference when we push speed. still need stops to give my wrists and butt a break. the place we park keeps having car vandalism... another worry that doesn't go away. we have it pretty empty when we park but who knows what attracts car bashers.

the road that was buried in the mud slide is opening to the public today. still a 15 mph section led by a pilot car. won't be totally done until fall. hard to imagine what a mess this made, and we are grateful every day that we got home before it happened. ETA I'll be gone until probably next Saturday. have fun everyone.

Good evening ladies...

This morning I did P90x3 Isometrics. Tougher than I thought it was going to be. Then I was off to go into the office. Hate working saturdays but it needed to be done. Grocery shopping then walked chester 2.5 miles.

Have a great trip Valerie!

Have a great weekend all!!!
