Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 5/19

good morning ladies!

Dinner was really nice and my former boss picked up the tab. Was really nice of him to do so and of course we were very appreciative and thrilled as it was a very expensive restaurant. Ate way too much and had 2 glasses of wine. We had an hour drive home so needless to say no workout this morning. Just as well. I have STS disc 20 Legs planned for tonight so I need my strength!

Deb...Nice long weekend ahead of you. The weather here now looks like rain on Saturday and Sunday. :(

Valerie...great job on those hills. You are a machine on that bike!

Irongrl...I bought Supersets/Push Pull way back when it first came out and I have never done the workout. I would always buy Cathe's DVD when they came out no matter what the DVD. I never did much weight work back then but knew some day I would and each time I was hoping a new one would motivate me. I have some catching up as I have a few unused ones.

Garance...did you get a lot of knitting done? :)

Hi to Josie!

have a great day!

Hi Ladies,

I did not workout yesterday. The side where I had the shingles is still very sore and I think it’s because I worked out on Monday. I will probably walk 3.5 miles tonight like I
din on Sunday.

Regarding menopause, I still get mild hot flashes once in a while and sleeping has not been a problem. I have always gotten up at night to use the restroom because I drink a lot of water during the day, but I get at least 7 hours every night.

Valerie, sounds like you got a great bike. I’m still very happy with my Trek and don’t plan on upgrading anytime soon :)

Deb, what is stopping you from retiring?

Judy, supersets and push pull was the first DVD I bought. I love it and I also love the pyramid lower and upper body DVD and the muscle endurance one. These are the ones that got me in great shape when I was running marathons.

Hi to Lori and Garance!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Jazzercise Burlesque (45 min.).

Deb, the town meeting is an old New England tradition, and I felt obligated to attend because there is this major issue about affordable housing vs. agricultural land. Several people, mostly seniors living on social security, were living in a trailer park in a flood plain (!), and when hurricane Irene came along, many of them were flooded out. Now they want the town to build individual freestanding houses on one acre each, so they can have what they call "memorial gardens" and bring their cats and dogs. They want to take over agricultural land which is currently in conservation. I find all of this objectionable, largely because the taxpayers will have to somehow come up with the money to persuade a contractor to do this AND subsidize the rentals, because they were only paying 250-350 dollars rental fees per month in the trailer park for their individual sites. The town has received a FEMA grant that will cover the cleanup but not much else, because there's a lot of abandoned trailers and other junk littering this lovely park. The piece of land they want is gorgeous, productive (hay), and with lovely wildlife--birds, foxes, etc. I think there should be affordable housing, but there are many sites where beautiful townhouses could be built in town and also eliminate crumbling eyesores, but no, they want freestanding houses. This issue has been really divisive and doesn't look like it will go away or be decided for a LONG time. Basically last night nothing was done--just a lot of feckless tabling of motions. A waste of time. I didn't get much knitting done because I was feeling fractious and annoyed.

Added to that, last night was an endless thunderstorm--3 inches of rain and waking every hour to the sound of thunder and crack of lightning. Crazy!

Valerie, your vacation sounds wonderful. After town meeting last night, I am feeling pretty anti-social myself. Why don't you like Jennifer Lawrence? I think she's a breath of fresh air in Hollywood.

Me again. 2 times today!

Ended up working late so decided today will be a rest day. I think it has been a while since I had a complete rest day so here it is. Will aim for legs tomorrow!

Garance...the storm was horrendous. Came at about 6pm here yesterday right when I was leaving work. Several towns lost power for about an hour or so. Terrible driving in it.

My son's girlfriend left SLP for me to watch. I have not seen it yet but can't wait to. You girls seemed to have all loved it. I like Jennifer Lawrence too. Loved her in The Hunger Games and can't wait for the 2nd movie as I have read the trilogy.

Sorry that your still in pain Josie. What is the duration of shingles? Is this normal?

What is everyone doing for this holiday weekend? I have a good friend coming for the weekend. Always fun when he comes. We have been good friends since we were 5 years old. We were neighbors growing up and it is crazy that we never lost contact and have pretty much shared our lives together. He lives in NY and we talk several times a week and see each other many times throughout the year. He actually comes on vacation with us at times! Him and my husband are like 2 little old ladies when they are together. Will be a fun weekend.

Have a great day Again!

Hi Everyone,

I downloaded X-Train Ride this morning and did it before work.
Wow, that was a fantastic workout! I loved the sets and the music. I'll be doing this one regularly. The download worked out nice too. I was able to watch it on my laptop.

Deb-I would love to have a treadmill at home! If I can find one small enough, I'm sure I could make it work. That might be a project for next year.

Valerie-I used to be very active in running and biking groups when I was younger. I have been rather anti-social in recent years and I do most of my training activities alone or with my husband.

I use Benadryl sometimes too.

The new bike sounds awesome! Can't wait to hear more about it!

Josie-sorry you are still sore..hope that goes away soon. I'll have to check out the Pyramid Upper/Lower body, that sounds like a good one.

Lori & Garance-sounds like you had some pretty bad storms, we got lucky here, nothing too bad.

Not sure yet what we'll be doing for the holiday. Hopefully the weather will be nice and we can spend a lot of time outdoors.

Have a good night!

Judy

Good afternoon,

this morning I did a new KCM called Body Shop. A different weight workout, new compound moves and it looks like it has great premixes. Liked it a lot.

Valerie, we have a B'J's here that is like Costco..and I used to get great deals there on Olay products...I never looked for anything else there, but I bet you can still get great deals on all skincare..didn't think they would carry something like Strivectin...nice.

Lori, crappy weather here today, but I don't care,. I'm off and that is what matters..:). I think you earned a rest day..

Josie, what is stopping me from retiring is the health care cost for retirees...and not knowing what to expect in 2015 with the President's joke of a healthcare plan...(** steps of soap box now**).

Garance, that whole trailer park fiasco must be so frustrating for tax paying people...why do they deserve an acre each? Please...

Judy, if you do ever decide to get a treadmill, keep the fold up ones in mind...I love mine, it's right in my workout area, folded down the base is right where I would do weight work etc, folded up it's against the wall, takes up very little roo. It's made by Vision Fitness...love it.

Nothing much else going on here...I think I will relax for a bit with a cup of tea and a book!

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did STS disk 18 for back and bis (60 min.). I'm sore already.

Lori, we didn't lose power, but our driveway was a mess after that storm. DH's parents also forgot to put on their sump pump and the first floor of their condo was flooded. DH had been watching this the entire time they were in Florida and was pretty unhappy that this happened. I guess we like similar things to read. I loved the Hunger Games trilogy and thought Jennifer Lawrence was a perfect Katniss. Can't wait for the next installment.

I finally managed to plant my zinnias, nasturtiums, and two of my hanging baskets. I didn't have enough potting soil to plant the third. Just in time for the rain, so good timing.

Deb, you sound very content on your day off. Enjoy the mini-vacation. What are you reading these days?

This weekend I am off to Great Barrington to see the Paul Taylor dance company on Sunday afternoon, and on Monday we will have FIL and MIL over for a cookout.

Judy, I sometimes use trazodone for sleep. It works great. Sleep has gradually improved since the years of hot flashes and night sweats are finally OVER.

Hi to Valerie and Josie (hope you are feeling better, too)!

I just watched the first segment of a series "Enlightened"... that I think you said was good Lynda... with Laura Dern? Really enjoyed the first episode. thanks for the recommendation. I don't dislike Jennifer Lawrence but I find her pretty frosty. maybe it's the parts she's played. not a warm cuddly sort, but not everyone has to be. I've enjoyed her movies. there are only a few people whose name is an instant "not watching" for me... one is Adam Sandler. Can't think of any women who qualify...

Judy I liked the pacing and the music better on "Ride" but the other spin workout was also good. we were new to spinning then. I hope to ride some this weekend. we only had about an hour and a half on the new bikes but aren't going anywhere this weekend so want to get better acquainted with them. I spent more $$ on this bike than I planned to, but we did get a good trade in on the old one, and after trying new bikes I realized I've been riding too small a bike all these years. I have arthritis in my left hand and wanted the expensive easy-to-use shifters. plus it has a shock absorbing system so maybe my butt will be happier and I'll be able to increase mileage.
I also prefer to do things with my DH rather than groups. I might consider doing a bike ride with a group sometime if I can increase my tolerable mileage.

Lori , I thought at the beginning that SLP ( the characters) was going to be seriously annoying, but stick with it, it gets better and better. sometimes I'm too quick to judge....

Went to yoga this morning and she really hammered us... still did a bunch (!!!) of garden work, and am going to get in a short workout before dinner.

Hi ladies!

Over slept this morning. Forgot to change alarm from sleeping in yesterday! Oh well...another sleep in day. :)

Did hard strikes at work today. Was planning on legs tonight but this is not happing. I will do Ride in the morning then pick up my friend at train station. And try and fit it in at some point.

Valerie...i will look into that series. I like laura dern. I love Ride. Really need to try cycle max at some point.

Garance...we have a sump pump and invested in a back up battery should we lose power. We had a 5 inches of water in our basement years ago and do not want to have that again. So sorry for your DH's parents to be going thru this.

Deb...i agree with you about Garance's town meeting ! Wow!!!

Judy...my tm is a nordic track and it also folds up. I have had it about 12 years and it is still going strong.

Hi to Josie!

Hi Everyone,

This morning I did something a little different. I started out with X-Train Legs, and did the warmup and standing leg work. Then I switched to X-Train Bi's and Tri's and did the 100 rep challenges. I had to use dumbbells for the bicep curl challenge and for the tricep extensions I used the stability ball instead of a bench. I only used 5 lb dumbbells for these, but it was still challenging to do 100 reps. After that, I did the #2 Core workout from Bi's and Tri's. I have to say that I have a much harder time keeping up with the Cathe weight training than I did with the Ride workout. I guess that means I really need to focus on the weights and strength training.

Deb-That sounds like a good workout too. I was just looking at KCM on Collage Video.

Garance-I remember being in Great Barrington on a trip I took way back in 1990. I spent a couple of weeks in New England that summer. I remember it as a very nice area, beautiful scenery.

Valerie-I hope you get to ride your new bikes this weekend. Those new shifters sound nice. Bikes have improved alot in the past few years.

Lori-I'm going to get Hard Strikes as my next X-Train dvd. Also, I'd like to try Cycle Max. I'll have to check the folding treadmills that you and Deb have.

Hi Josie, hope you are feeling great!

Good night,

Judy

Good morning,

Got up a little earlier than I wanted to, but I can always take a nap right? It very cold here today...only 39 degrees right now, and it's only supposed to get up to 57. What is up with this spring? We had the AC on yesterday...and now this. Crazy.

Garance, sorry about your In-laws condo...was there much damage? They are there or don't they go somewhere for the winter? You mentioned your DH was watching the condo...I still haven't planted anything...John hung up a couple of baskets...Not reading anything too exciting..I just finished Lisa Scottoline's "Dirty Blond"...it was ok. Pushing it a little on the reality side, but a story is a story right? Now reading a book called "Slight of Hand" about a DC lawyer that has a talent with slight of hand and is a secret contract killer on the side..

Valerie, the Ride for Roswell that goes on here has multiple choices of length of the ride, I think the shortest is 20 miles and it goes up to 100. Nice for people like me that would want to participate, but would not be ready to do 100 miles in a day! All of the rides start and end at the UB campus.

Lori, it is great that you have a place at work to do workouts during the day. Did you mention that there are showers etc there too?

Judy, wow that was a great workout combination...you should be pretty sore tomorrow! I have pretty good DOMS from the KCM weight workout I did yesterday..maybe just the treadmill today..

Our rugs come back today from cleaning...can't wait. The dogs have a hard time running around on hard wood floors!

Hi to Josie,

Will check back later....

Good Morning,

Deb-I am pretty sore today. :) Especially my legs, glutes and piriformis in particular. I had to sit on an ice pack this morning.

Will check back later too,

Judy

Didn't get a workout in yesterday, but the garden work was enough.

so allow me to whine and complain..... the bridge collapse on I-5 (that is all over the news) is right here. we use it all the time. if they show maps showing where the span collapsed (into the Skagit river) it may show Arlington. I live north of Arlington and south of the bridge. Our new bikes are from a store on the *other side of the bridge*. the workaround is not convenient and crosses another even older and more fragile bridge. the workaround goes thru normally low traffic roads and messes up several of our regular bike rides besides!!
I'll be complaining about this for months!! it will cause MASSIVE traffic problems because there is no other significant north/south route. I'm getting out maps, looking for small roads alternatives, where bridges are too small to carry heavy freeway traffic.

so I guess we will be riding elsewhere. almost every single ride we've been doing involves north across that bridge! and then back south to get home.

Wow judy, that is quite a series of workouts linked together. no wonder you're sore.

Deb, so far my Medicare experience has been positive. I have a medicare supplement that costs about $100 a month, most providers do not accept straight medicare here. so far everything has been covered and statements are clear and easy to read. I know you're not medicare age yet, but so far this is way better than any private insurance I've had. the issue will be getting private insurance to cover the gap between now and medicare age.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did All Out Low Impact HIIT, premix 1 with core 1 (49:30).

Deb, it suddenly turned cold here, too. Apparently some front coming through that's expected to stall off the coast and then the weekend will remain chilly. Oh, yeah, a lot of damage for my FIL and MIL. As I said, DH watched over their place all winter, while they were in Florida (they have a home there as well), and made sure the condo here was okay. It has something to do with what their neighbor did to the water line to protect her own condo from flooding. So her son fixed her problem and created a problem for her two neighbors. Lovely! I'm about to sink my teeth into a novel, My Name Is Red, by Orhan Pamuk, a Turkish Nobel Prize winner in literature. A couple of my colleagues told me it's the best novel they have read in a long time. Wish me luck--it's long.

Judy, yes, Berkshire county in MA is very beautiful. A lot of tourism--Jacob's Pillow, Tanglewood, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and the tallest mountain in MA--Mt. Greylock. Ski resorts in the winter, culture in the summer. Wow, I would be sore too!

Valerie, that looks like a mess. Saw a bit of it on the news. Enlightened is filled with venal characters, a bit like The Office on steroids. Laura Dern's character is hilarious in this cringe-worthy way.

Lori, I bet you would like The Passage and The Twelve by Justin Cronin from what you have said about your reading.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Hi Everyone,

I did a short cycling workout this morning and a short core workout. I am quite sore, so tomorrow may be a rest day then I'll be back at it on Sunday.

Valerie-I was reading about the bridge yesterday..I didn't realize you were so close to it! I'm sorry about the hassle all of that will cause you.

Garance-it got cold here too, we have a frost warning tonight. So sorry about your inlaws water damage. I would be pretty upset with the neighbors if they caused it.

I ordered Hard Strikes, it should be here next week.

Hi to Lori and Josie!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Judy

Judy....thank you . Yes, it is a BFD and it is very close and there are really not alternatives that 10,000 other people don't know about. Not sure how we will deal with this for months and months...

Good morning ladies!

Valerie...so terrible about that bridge. Unbelievable that happened. I agree it is going to be a nightmare for quite some time.

Still have not done legs or back and bis. Was able to bump out ride yesterday morning. Very busy day today not sure what I will be able to get in for a workout. Went out for dinner yesterday and wow did we eat! May try for Ride again since it is a calorie burner. :)

Judy...i love Hardstrikes and I Love love the tabata heavy bag bonus. If you do not have a heavy bag some do it with out and still get a good workout. I use 1lb hand weights during the cardio and 14oz gloves for heavy bag.

Garance...thanks for the book referrals. I will be looking for something when I finish with GOT.

Deb...we have a couple large conference rooms that are pretty private and yes we have showers! Otherwise I would never be able to do the workouts that I do. Usually a sweaty mess at the end.

Have a great day!

Hi to Josie!

Started to get an idea yesterday of what a MAJOR MESS this is. I-5 is the main link between Canada and WA, OR, CA. It's the main artery ...all the major cities are on this route, Vancouver BC, Seattle, Olympia, Portland, and much of California. Most of the commercial truck traffic uses this route. there are other "roads" but nothing up to handling big rigs and heavy traffic. surface streets were totally jammed up yesterday, so locals were stuck for 2 hours trying to go to and from work.

yesterday would have been a big travel day anyway, but this is beyond minor inconvenience, like it is for me because I like to hike and ride my bike in the area. it's a huge commercial and tourism disaster for millions up and down the corridor. Efforts are underway to see if a Bailey bridge ( temporary structure) can be put in place to get a temporary fix.

so we will do a ride somewhere else today.

Good morning,

Nice day yesterday, shopping and breakfast with my cousing, then took Kylee to agility class.

Judy, if you had to sit on an ice pack, I think you can say that you may have overdone it! LOL..

Valerie, Yes, that whole bridge situation sounds horrible..I hope they are able to do something, especially bad because of the holiday weekend....regarding health care, yes, that is the problem, I won't be eligible for Medicare for 5 years...have to have something in between, and to add to that, will there even be Medicare in 5 years?

Garance, will take a look at that novel...very cold here yesterday...in the high 30's , low 40's. it was supposed to get into the 50's but I don't think it ever made it...

Hi to Josie, and Lori,

Off to agility again, then later we are going to dinner with my brother and SIL...the one we had to reschedule because she got sick..

Take care,
