Happy Mother's Day to all the Mom's out there...

I guess I am my dog's Mom....I got a card from them and the bird too!

I did a pre-mix from Afterburn this morning... to anyone that can do this whole workout...CUDOS!!! I could barely do the pre-mix, which was the w/u, and the first 5 circuits, Cool down, stretch. I liked it though and will do it again.

Gardening cannot be put off any longer, John got 5-6 bags of mulch so I guess I have to weed and put it down now.

Take care,

Hi Deb and any later posters--

I did STS total body (66 min.).

Good for you on After Burn! I think this one has vastly improved my cardiovascular fitness. I just go for it now and am always surprised how fast it goes. Well of course you are a mom to the vixen and Keegan and your parrot! Who else would be up in the middle of the night with them?

If I did not have papers to grade, I would definitely be pulling weeds. The rain has really made everything go crazy. Maybe tomorrow if the weather stays this good.

Good morning,

I just did 40 minutes of Cardio Coach #5. Whew. I did get to the garden yesterday and weeded a couple of beds, scraped off the old mulch, which we will put somewhere in the front. I didn;t get to spread the new mulch because I was sore from the workout and didn't want to push it too much.

Garance, are you completely finished with teaching etc now?

How was everyone's weekend?

I'm back from our first backpack.... not exactly what we planned. weather went to summer in a snap, and it was very warm and sunny on the snow. this is low elevation but still a significant elevation gain and to stay on the snow we needed a lot of gear. snowshoes, double sleeping pads, down bags, warm clothes etc. It's so weird to be totally exhausted by the uphill struggle in the sun , sweating and roasting, in shorts, slathered with sunscreen, with very heavy packs and as soon as the sun starts to drop... freezing your butt off. We didn't make it all the way to the top but we've been there before and there is no shade there, and we needed shade. Lots of critter tracks but only a displaying blue grouse for entertainment. they fluff their feathers and prance around and hoot day and night looking for love. took us about 6 hours to go up and 3 1/4 to come down. not sure on the mileage.
Takes a trip or two to get used to carrying all that stuff and then as the season progresses, packs get lighter.

When we got back to our car, parked in the sun on a dead end road, suddenly the ground was alive with baby frogs, dozens and dozens of tiny frogs. No idea why they gathered around the subaru. there's water everywhere around there but we'd walked for miles in similar terrain and saw 1 frog, meanwhile our car was host ( mother) for many.... many. we tried to shoo them away before we drove away so as not to squash any but no way to tell.

Strong work on Afterburn & Cardio coach Deb. I haven't done Afterburn enough. we're doing a bike ride today so not today either. when weather is this nice I'm doing outdoor stuff.
I've been doing weed pulling for months, plus Roundup and the flamer so I'm in good shape this year. We mulched better this year than previously and it has helped immensely.

Hi Ladies,

Had a wonderful Mother’s Day, we went to my DM’s house and had carne asada and pollo asado with different kind of salsas and potato salad, macaroni and cheese which I made and a cactus salad and beans, guacamole and tortillas. It was so yummy and filling and if that was not enough my DD went to the Mexican bakery and brought pan dulce for dessert ;)

My 80 mile ride on Saturday was beautiful buy hard on my knees. I’m glad I took a break yesterday. My knees feel fine today. Eighteen more days before we leave for San Francisco, I need to start sorting through my stuff so that I can put my outfits together for the ride. I also need to get a new bag, the one used last time exploded on the second day of the ride 

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, and Valerie--

This morning I did After Burn (54 min.).

Deb, my classes are over. Just paper-grading and thesis evaluation. I don't have to do student interviews anymore.

We went out to dinner on Saturday night at a very nice French restaurant, using a gift certificate we were given at Christmas. A good thing, too, because it was super expensive. I had a haddock and scallop dish in a creamy crab sauce with assorted roasted vegetables. For dessert I had their famous butterscotch sundae (the butterscotch is pure heaven). Sunday was a phone call from each of my sons and a gift certificate to the foodnetworkstore.com.

Josie, your Mother's Day meal sounds so good--wish we had some decent Mexican food around here. I watched a depressing film last night--set in LA--called A Better Life, about illegal immigrants. Reminded me of De Sica's Bicycle Thieves if you know that film. It's a really good film though, and I can really understand how the actor Bichir was nominated for an Oscar for his performance. Maybe a little hopefulness at the end of the film.

Valerie, I meant to tell you that I watched the first season of The Killing, and I've been trying to watch the second season now, but I think the writers have lost their way somehow, and it's turning into a David Lynch retread of Twin Peaks.

wow Josie, that sounds great. I love mexican food but DH is a heat wimp. even things I think are totally completely mild, he can't tolerate, so "pretty bland" is the rule. I've never had a cactus salad but would try it in a minute. I don't know what pan dolce is... I don't eat many desserts, not that I would not like them! I'll look it up. We did a ride this morning 25 miles so we're getting back to street riding. just over 2 hours. next week will be mt biking again.

Oh bummer on "The Killing" . never liked anything david lynch did. we're watching the last episode from the first season and enjoying it though it does seem to be going off in a lot of directions.... I put the second season on the queue but have no idea when it might show up. I always forget the details of who did what to whom by the time ( this one has a lot of that) the next season comes.

Good morning all,

Class last night so we got to bed late ( for us anyway). Not much new around here.

Valerie, sounds like you had a nice trip. I don't think I will ever be able to do Afterburn in it's entirety. I am happy I got through the pre-mix.

Josie, yummm...love that food. Will you be blogging the ride again?

Garance, you are so lucky to be DONE WITH IT!! I can't waif for this time next year. This is the only time I can remember wanting a summer/fall to go by faster.

off for more coffee and to let the vixen out for the last hurrah...

Watched the last episode of The Killing last night and it has gotten strange. many familiar areas where it was filmed. they made toll booths where they don't exist, changed names a little but most of the locations are accurate and close to home. It does NOT rain as much as they show. we almost never have thunder, so the rumbling thunder in the background is bogus. it's unlikely Stan would to walk into the ICU to visit the teacher he almost beat to death, and unlikely Stan would be out of jail at all and chatting up the poor teachers wife. and now the one cop apparently set up Darren. some absurd turns. by the time the next season is out I probably won't remember details so maybe it will be OK but I like more believable things.

Josie I looked up pan dulce since I've never had it. sounds interesting. I am in awe of you riding 80 miles at a crack. I'm not sure I'll ever be that comfortable on a bike. After 2 hrs and 25 miles I'm ready to get off. I know I can do up to 35 or so but after that the posture really starts to get to me, along with the seat.

Deb, I'll bet you can do Afterburn. take short breaks as needed. If I get too breathless I stop the disk, and get going again as soon as I feel in control again. Not "sit down and relax" but 30 seconds to grab water, let your heart rate down a little, and then continue.

Hi Ladies,

My co-worker has been talking non stop since I got here about bowling and yesterday was on the phone with her looser boyfriend arguing about stupid things. The man does not respect or value her, but she continues to see him. I’m so sick of it!!!

Today I will be spinning, my knees feel normal again, so I need to get back on the saddle ;)

Valerie, pan de dulce (sweet bread) is just different variations of pastries made Mexican style  my favorite ones are the sponge bread and the guava and pineapple filled turnovers, but I will eat whatever is left ;) My DH is also a wimp when it comes to spicy foods, so I usually leave some of what I’m making without the spice. My DD and I love spicy.

This is the mileage schedule for the ride: Deb, I will not be blogging this year, but will be posting all the pictures on Face book. My DB and I are not talking 

Day 1 85.5 miles
Day 2 109.2 miles
Day 3 66.7 miles
Day 4 97.7 miles
Day 5 42 miles/short day but a lot of hills
Day 6 83.3 miles
Day 7 60 miles

Garance, I have not seen the movie A Better Life. I have seen one called El Norte that was very good. There is also a funny movie called A Day without a Mexican that you might enjoy. It is not very well made, but it is funny.

Hi Deb, Josie, and Valerie--

This morning I did S & G (54 min.). Still hate all the burpees.

Deb, I'm not sure who will/should win DWTS. The semifinalists all look pretty strong. When I first started After Burn, I used lighter weights than Cathe, and I modified some of the exercises so they wouldn't be so hard. I'm up to her weights now, but I still don't do those walking plank pushups very well. I still have students who insist on seeing me at the last minute about papers, so I am not completely, completely done.

Josie, that looks really impressive--and almost unimaginable for me. I am currently reading Wild by Cheryl Strayed, about her walking the entire length of the Pacific Coast Trail, all by herself. What you plan to do is equally daunting.

Valerie, a lot of people didn't like the finale last year of The Killing. This year the murder is still not solved. It is really too circuitous and digressive and kinky--like Twin Peaks, but without the camp. The rain continues to fall in sheets. You'd think they were living in the tropics, for heaven's sake, and not Seattle.

Josie, where is the ride taking place this year? those are serious miles. I'd be flat on my butt after 50 miles the first day. what in the world is there to talk about... bowling??

I will look for pan dulce next time we're eating out. If I split it with some others it won't be too calorie heavy. No mexican bakeries that I know of close by.

Linda, that book might be the same one DH is reading. I just looked for it but can't find it to be sure. He loves to read outdoor adventure things. I do too, but not as many as he does. We've walked big sections of the PCT. mostly in OR and WA. never walked much of CA. access from where we live here to the PCT has been difficult since some roads washed out a few years ago.

I thought The Killing was going to be good, but if they continue to go off in all directions I won't be pleased. I hated "Lost" and am so sorry I wasted so much time on it, just to be disappointed. Josie, I'm sure I saw A Day without a Mexican" years ago, and it was funny. El Norte, I'm not sure. will take a look at that one.

Good morning,

This morning I did the upper body pre-mix from Muscle Endurance. I forgot how many reps there are in this one for each excercise.

Josie, that ride looks amazing. Stupid question: where do you sleep? Unfortunately, I am not on Face Book..probably one of the few :).

Valerie, is The Killing a TV show? did you get it on netflix or something? I am so out of touch with TV and movies, it's embarrassing sometimes. Believe me, I do take those 30 second breaks with these workouts. LOL.

Garance, I didn't watch the resulst show yet from last night. I predicted that the football player was going to go, but I may be surprised.

Joan, what's going on in your neck of the woods?

Off to get more coffee and wake up some more...It's Hump Day!!

Yes, a TV show (netflix) on disk after it ran on TV. the second season must have just finished on TV and isn't available yet on netflix. It started out interesting but it seems like it may be going off the deep end now.

I did yoga yesterday morning. later did the upper body half of Total Body trisets. Not sure I care much for this one. some of the moves seemed unnecessarily weird. it did not seem to flow well to me. some very hard moves in there with balance required, so I went light on weight to get familiar but not sure how much I'll like this one. too soon to say for sure. I subbed regular toe pushups for the soldier ones and dive bombers but did the same number. I don't do too well with lifting arm / leg on pushups.

Deb, I have a FB account but find it fairly worthless. I don't care to make all the personal info a public thing. but if all you write is impersonal, then it's really not much communication. so have one but seldom use it.....

Linda, same topic , different book. a lot of people write about their PCT adventures.

Hi Deb, Josie, and Valerie--

This morning I did the upper body split on Total Body Trisets (56 min.).

Valerie, I just do regular pushups for the soldier ones and the ones where you cross your foot over the other, but I do the dive bombers. I tried to do the kickbacks while holding a plank, and found them too hard. Otherwise I like the workout and have even become accustomed to the music, which I think is very odd heavy metal. I am really enjoying Wild. It's as much about a personal healing journey after her mother died in her forties from cancer--very much a woman's story.

I won't spoil the results show for you, Deb.

I don't do Facebook either, so I will miss the progress of your ride, Josie.

Off to more grading.

Hi Ladies,

I will be doing a home work out, not yet sure which one. The link that I sent has nothing to do with facebook, so you can just check on the photos for the day and maybe I will be in some of them and you can also add comments.

If you send me your e-mails I can send you photos as I ride. I usually do that for my DM.
She loves getting e-mails and pictures; she has the I-Pad and uses it all the time ;)

Josie

Linda, I used to do dive bombers in another workout, maybe Bootcamp? or STS? these looked different from what I remembered so I just did some reg pushups since it was crowding dinnertime and I needed to get back to the kitchen.

I don't like bicep curls over the ball. there's no way I can lift a dumbbell straight in that position, and it never feels like I'm working the bicep. I'll sub plain standing curls. the lateral small dumbbell moves were strange. that's all I remember offhand. I'll try it at least once more. sometimes the first time through feels off key. I didn't even notice the music! I was rushing to get a 1 hr workout done in 1 hr.
How's the lower body part? I didn't look. DH and I have done so much lower body work the last week we need a day or two off. we're going on another long weekend this week and will be doing more riding and hiking. so no lower body anything for 2 days beforehand.

Started Downton Abbey. first one was a little dry but the second episode is a riot!

Josie I will send my email.

Valerie, I found the sub-titles in Downton Abbey really helpful! Then when I got used to their accent, I hardly looked at it, but still kept them on because sometimes they would speak facing away from the camera and it was hard to tell what they were saying.

Keep us posted on how you like the series. I really liked it...as a matter of fact, I added the theme song as the ringtone on my cell.

Good morning,

I woke up at 3:00 with a horrible stomach ache. Then up at 3:30 with Kylee, and again at 5:30 for good. No workout.

Garance, I was not happy with the elimination from DWTS. Wrong one went as far as I am concerned. She and Derrick were better than Donald. I did dive bombers in P90X...but I do them on my knees so not so bad.

Valerie, I don't like those "preacher" curls using the ball either. They actually hurt my arms and I don't feel anything in my biceps. I keep thinking I am doing them wrong or something, so I do standing curls too.

Funny how most of us do not do Facebook....I wonder if it's the age thing? Most of my friends and family are on all the time and I get all kinds of grief for not being on.
I'd rather read a book.

Josie, still amazed that you do that ride, it's great.

Time to get ready for another wonderful day at the office!
