Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 5/12

Hi Ladies!

No workout this morning. Disc 17 Legs tonight so need I say why only this today!

garance...I feel the exact same way with her voice!!!! Her laugh goes right thru me. I have been trying to tune it out a bit but pretty funny you would mention this. I am a freak about skin care and use sunscreen 365 days a year. I also use Retin A (prescription) cost about $130 a tube but a tube last me close to 5 months. Non prescription I use Paula's Choice Resist products (Shop Paula's Choice: Paula's Choice Skincare & Cosmetics). I friend told me about them several years back and this is all I use.

Deb...coffee would always win with me!

Hi to Judy and Valerie! :)

Hi Ladies,

Feeling much better and no workouts for me until this weekend. I have been cleaning my closet and ironing a few things. I have also been cooking up a storm :)

Josie

Josie, best wishes for a quick recovery. I remember how unpleasant the rash was, felt like a blowtorch on your skin if anything brushed against it.

I use Strivectin TL tightening eye serum. I have no idea if it's made much difference..... maybe I'd look worse if I didn't use it? how can anyone tell?? I get it at Costco. for the rest of my face I use Revale skin. it's coffee berry extract of some kind. I have rosacea so I can't use any of the potions that cause increased skin turnover.... like the alpha hydroxyl or retin A products. they irritate it. Revale doesn't make me break out, which others have. I only use foundation with sunscreen during the day, but I use it every day, like Lori. I think the small doses of sunshine daily add up so using a screen daily is a good thing to do. if we're on water or snow I use a spf 30 but daily is 10 spf. both creams are kind of expensive but they last a long time and I'm told I look younger than my age in years.

I'm glad we watched Boss, although ending like it did was disappointing. I can't believe some of the stuff that goes on for many seasons... really liked this one and surprised it didn't get renewed. some series sort of wrap up loose ends at the end of the season, but this one definitely left everything unresolved. we're watching Revenge now. seems Ok, definitely regular TV.
we watched 'The Sessions" last night. wow. who'd imagine all the nudity and sex would be so boring? Didn't care for this one. thought Silver Linings Playbook was next, but it hasn't arrived, lost in the postal system somewhere.

Judy, I have no idea who Gary Fisher is or why a bike is named after him. but congrats to your DH.... hope he enjoys his new ride. we're taking our bikes and will leave sunday for a couple days east of the mountains. the number of places and trails that have opened up to mt biking is amazing. some of our state parks have trails, and some local parks too. xc ski areas or even downhill ski areas are often good places to ride after the snow is gone.
Our new road bikes aren't ready yet, mine was slow to arrive. they'd be ready tomorrow but DH is working so we'll get them Saturday and hopefully ride a little to test them out that day.
I've been awfully sloppy about workouts this week. got in my 2 yoga classes, and not much else. we were working on a yard project but not that much real work for me. will do something this afternoon.

Deb, maybe if you did a workout both weekend days and then 1 other mid week? I'd have trouble working out at 4:15 am too. retirement is nice in so many ways...

Hi Ladies,

Garance-I hope your bone density results are still great! I have low bone density and am hoping the weight training will help improve my readings. I should be getting another test this summer. One of the hospitals around here does it as part of a health screen for only $49, so I plan on getting it done every 6 months or so.

Josie-so glad you are feeling better!

Valerie-sounds like you and your DH have a great trip planned! I hope the weather is good for you and that you enjoy your new bikes.

I remember getting up at 4:00 to be at the gym at 4:30 to workout before work. I do not miss that schedule. I don't think I could do it now.

This morning I did get outside, and walked-jogged 3.5 miles. Tonight I did most of XTrain Chest/Back/Shoulders. My weighted gloves came today. I think I'm going to like them!

Good Night,

Judy

Good morning,

Well it's finally Friday, and I only worked 4 days this week...it seems like it was 6.

Judy, we have an office in Romulus, are you anywhere near there? My dream is to retire and work part time somewhere where no one reports to me and I am only responsible for what I do...$49 is a bargain! I would do it more frequently too for that price. I have it done every 2 years...that is what my ob/gyn recommends. Maybe it is because the insurance only covers it that often..

Garance, Good luck with the bone density test...I have Osteopenia...and have never had any change in the results no matter what I have done, calcium, weight lifting and I take Fosamax once a week..etc..I have been looking for a good eye cream as well. I bought a couple, one from DHC cosmetics ( on line site) that was supposed to be good, but every time I put it on my eyes water like crazy...it must have something in it that does that. It was a night cream I also have the Olay night cream that does the same thing...what have you looked at so far? Did you try Make Up Alley? Are you still using the Murad?
LOL about Max and the "walk, walk walk"...

Lori, thanks for the link to Paula's Choice...I forget about her site...I think there was a post here in the Open Forum not too long ago about her stuff, everyone seems to like it...

Josie, glad you are doing better..ironing? yuk!

Valerie, thanks for reminding me about Strivectin...I have some of that line too...a friend of mine and her husband used to distribute that through their company so she sent me some samples of the products...mmm...I think I need to inventory all the stuff I have ...I think I will start fresh on Sunday..

Work, then relaxing and hoping it will be a nice sunny weekend, and that I get some enthusiam to do some yard work as well..

Any exciting plans for the weeekend?

Good Morning,

Deb-We are in Plymouth Township, about 20 miles from Romulus.

I was a manager for over 20 years, in a rather stressful environment. I started young, when I was just out of college. I went back to grad school in the mid 90's for an MBA. I didn't plan on leaving that career as early as I did, but the company I worked for was sold in 2001 and the subsequent reorganization made things very unpleasant. Lots of people were let go, jobs eliminated, and for the people who stayed, the workload increased. I decided to find another job, which I did in 2004, and I continued to work full time until I moved to Michigan. The best thing about leaving that career was not having the stress of being responsible for other people. I love not being on call anymore(I rotated weeks being on call 24/7 with 3 other managers) and I love leaving work at work and only being responsible for what I do.

DH and I scheduled today off work so we are going to run some errands and hopefully take the bikes out later. The forecast looks good for the weekend so I'm going to spend a lot of time outside. No special plans though.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Judy

Deb, I like the Strivectin eye cream. it feels nice and doesn't irritate. whether it actually does anything... how can you tell what wrinkles"didn't form"?? sun exposure is the biggest evil there, and I always wear a hat or visor along with sunscreen. I seem to be maintaining pretty well.
Has anyone tried any of the 'brown spot" reducers on their face? I had a big brown scar/mark on the back of my hand from a burn.... lost an argument with the door of the wood stove. I used Amlactin hand lotion and over the course of a couple years it faded and disappeared. I'd had the scar for 20 years and all of a sudden noticed it was less, and now is gone. it was just the hand lotion I happened to buy and wasn't using especially on the mark.

I did S& G last night, in addition to yoga in the morning. If you do all the floor work it's a good overall workout... lots of core work and pushups.... though the cardio isn't as intense as some others. but that's OK. I had several things going on at the same time in the kitchen so it worked out nicely. not sore this morning.

I have dense bones,no issues. I should get another screen done, its been a few years. I've always been active and loved milk plus good genetics. fortunate to have solid bones and teeth, at least so far. I wonder how much you can combat genetic predisposition with good habits.... good habits certainly can't hurt though.

ETA the ingredients in amlactin are 12% lactic acid neutralized with ammonium hydroxide... plus the usual polysyllabic ingredients it's a body lotion and says not recommended for face. . it did an amazing job on the brown scar on my hand without me intending to do anything. It seems the latest flush of skin products are for brown spots, so just wondering.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did All Out Low Impact HIIT, premix 1 with core 1 (49:30). I really like the music on this workout.

I have been using Philosophy eye hope, or something like that. It's actually pretty good. I notice that it seems to soften my crow's feet. It had great reviews at Amazon. I don't really need a moisturizer in the summer. My skin is pretty oily, and I've used retin-a for years and years at .05 strength. I only pay 5 dollars for a tube because of my insurance. Sunscreen in my BB cream and I love my essential-C from Murad. Don't have any brown spots

Deb, yes, I use the essential-C in the summer and just started again about 3 weeks ago. During the winter it's too harsh and I use a bit of Amazing Grace milk emulsion lotion after my shower instead. Soooo--if you see a bargain on essential C on ebay, I'm definitely up for it.

Valerie, I saw the Sessions when it came out because of the Oscar buzz. It was okay--good performances--but seemed clinical to me, like reading Masters and Johnson, rather than moving in the way it wanted to be.

Lori, I went to that site, but all I could see were moisturizers and serums for dry skin, nothing specifically for the eyes.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Good morning ladies!

Been crazy busy at work. Legs on thursday was great. Wow do you feel these woekouts. Ran yesterday morning and that was it for the day. Today is disc 18 back and bis. Then hoping to do ride and walk chester but I am kind of lazy this morning so we will see how this goes!

Valerie...I like slide and glide too. Yes the cardio is not as intense but some days that is just what you need. I always wear a hat too especially on my long walks with chester. People know me as the hat lady as I have some pretty large hats to block the sun!!!! I think I mentioned I am a freak about taking care of my skin :)

Garance...I completely forgot to mention Paula's choice does not have specific eye creams. Her philosophy is eye cream has the same ingredients as face but in a smaller jars and more expensive. Good for you with insurance paying for your retin a. Unfortunatley mine ins does not cover. I use the 1% and it is soooo expensive. When my husband and I go to mexico i always try and pick up a couple of tubes. They are $30 there and over the counter.

Never had a bone density test. Next physical I will ask about it.

Josie...how are you are feeling great today.

Judy...oh to be able to work part time! I was recently promoted and with that came so much more work and more hours. Played the lottery last night.....one can only dream!!!

Hi Deb!

Have a great weekend!!!

Good morning,

Not a lot going on here...the weather is good, not really sunny, 58 degress right now. I have a lot of HouseMax to do this weekend, being away last weekend put me behind on a lot of things.

Judy, I hear you on the stress of managing people...it never ends.

Valerie, I don't think I have the Striventin eye cream, I had the neck cream, that was good, if I remembered to use it. Never heard of that hand cream, it sounds good...I wonder what would happen if you used it on your face? I would be willing to try on my face, it is a drugstore product? I have 2 brown spots that I would like to have removed...when I diligently used Retin a on them, they did fade to almost being gone, but I stopped, and they came back.

Garance, will start the hunt for the Essential C-....I get e-mails from Ebay every time a new listing is put up, so there will be one soon that will work. I love that stuff too, but again, forget to use it....do you use under moisturizer? it doesn't have an SPF in it so I usually put something else over it. If the Philosphy is working, why looking for a different one?

Lori, funny you mentioned walking Chester with a hat, and being known as the Hat Lady...there is a guy in our neighborhood that walks his 2 dogs all the time, wears a couple of funny hats, one a cowboy hat, another strange one that I have no idea what it would be called, but the dogs always bark at him at the windows, and when we look to see what is up, we just say, "oh, it's the Guy with the Hats"...knowing it's the dogs that they are barking at.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Did Cardio trisets ( or is it supersets?) yesterday the one from LIS. Like that one a lot. followed with core 1 from Xtrain. nice workout in just under an hour.

Deb, I used the Strivectin neck cream for a while but ran out and didn't see it. I'd buy it again. the Amlactin is just an OTC hand and body lotion. I have several kinds I take a squirt of during the day. my hands are very dry and I use a lot of lotion. I never expected (nor was I trying) to get rid of the scar, but I'm pleased it did. the spot was about as big as a quarter on my right hand. it was a bad burn, even a little depressed because not much padding in that area. but suddenly, it was gone.

I wash my face with Cetaphil cleanser. doesn't dry my skin. I use Revale cream only at night. I don't use moisturizer and apply my foundation while my skin is damp. moisturizer makes my foundation slide around. I have an spf sunscreen 30 from estee lauder I put on if I'll be in intense sun, but 90% of the time I rely on the sunscreen in the foundation. I wear a hat or visor outdoors especially at elevation. the skin on my face never changes color whereas other body parts get fairly tan. we do so much outdoor stuff I want some tan as sun protection. I use sunscreen and try not to burn. I refuse to coat myself in sunscreen from head to toe for every outdoor activity. sunscreen plus bug juice and hot weather and exertion can be pretty unpleasant! I use sunblock clothes as well.

Lori, get a bone density done while you have insurance and before menopause to get a baseline value.

Having rosacea limits skin products. I had laser a few years ago that completely removed any sign of it so I am careful to maintain by not using things that irritate MY skin but not most other peoples skin.

I'll be gone for a couple days sun, mon, tues.

Lynda, that was why I rented The Sessions, but I expected the characters would be more interesting. just ended up being "clinical" and tedious. Silver Linings finally showed up, will watch that tonight. what did you think of that one?
