Hi everyone, I'm back. Had a really good trip this time. Left sat morning, took the ferry across, always a pleasant start to a trip. We had a bit of trouble finding a place to stay sat nite. always busy on saturday but finally found a quiet campground. every other night was no problem but it was a sunny saturday and loads of families with fires and screaming kids. I'm not real tolerant of either. did a hike saturday, supposed to be 4 miles RT but was at least 6. We could tell by how long it took. Lovely flowers. my first exposure to trout lillies which are beautiful, and lots of calypso orchids.
We had planned a backpack sunday- monday but the weather forecast changed to "rain" sunday night so we dayhiked it sunday instead. was sunny and pleasant, about 6-7 miles RT. on wilderness beach. quite clean and nice, little debris to be seen. nice tide pooling at low tide. Saw some whales spouting.. saw spouts not whales.
Did 2 mt bike trips on monday, a little wetter day but not bad. found a really nice trail along a lake that's open to biking and did somewhere around 12 miles. then tried another trail near by for several miles that wasn't as nice but still OK. Also did some hiking and bird watching on a sand spit that sticks out into the straights of juan de fuca. lots of ducks, terns, loons, seals, eagles. left for home wed morning so we avoided the commute traffic and still had time to clean things up when we got home. spring is mud season, and everything we wore was mud caked, especially our bikes and bike clothes. we need to take more changes of clothes!. no way to clean and dry everything.
Wow, two broken arms!!! that's horrendous... how can she use the bathroom? or eat? that poor lady! nobody deserves that! I hope she gets lots of support from friends and family.
I'd miss heart rate display... my best monitor of whether I'm working hard enough, and not too hard. my resting heart rate is low so max is low 150's. I prefer 140. I need to back off if I'm 155, can't maintain it. I use the HRM sometimes when we hike or bike too, and for sustained exercise like for 5-6 hours, I prefer the 120's. so that's my best barometer of work level. I don't care about calories burned... think it's just a meaningless estimate anyway.
so funny, I don't always wear a HRM. like the feedback. I always wear a watch. we usually time our rides just for the basic information, not to try to beat the clock or anything. It's fun to see how wind or cold temps can affect how long a ride takes.
Went to yoga this morning. Joan, when you haven't worked out regularly for a while it's way better to back off on weight and rebuild gradually. too easy to get hurt by going up too fast and getting injured or too sore. I want to restart STS soon and I will start with maybe half the weight from my last run, just to be sure I don't cause an injury.
