Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 4/28

Good morning ladies!

Beautiful here in New England. Yesterday did last disc of meso 1 then took Chester for a nice long walk by the lake. This week is recovery week so looking forward to pulling out some cathe dvd's I have not done in a while.

Today we are starting with outside yardwork. We have a nice patio area with a fire pit that gets pretty funky over the winter. We all love to sit out there so my my goal today is to get this taking care of.

This will be my workout (plus walking chester) for today. Between all the cleaning, sweeping and taking patio furniture out of the shed will be plenty for me!

Have a great day!

Sorry to be MIA. I have been feeling very antisocial. I am finally (hopefully) getting over tendonitis. Horrible pain above my left knee. I was told that when the thigh muscle is too tight it stretches the tendon above the knee and it gets inflamed. We have been doing lots of stretches but no lower body work. It hurt to walk and since it was also tax season there was no weight loss.

Good news is I can bench press 85lb. All we were doing at the gym was core and upper body.

The other reason for feeling antisocial is that my son and dil are getting a divorce. Fortunately Missouri prefers joint custody. Dil wants sole custody.
I got a good lawyer for ds and he filed first although divorce is dil's idea.
After 11 months of no depression medicine, he did have to go back on some. It doesn't help that dil kept making comments about sole custody and moving 2 hours away. Once he filed she was not able to move kids out of the area without court approval. She finally got a job on April 16 so at least she will probably stay in the area. It also doesn't help that she is still living in the house but calls her boyfriend in front of ds.

Fortunately the house is mine and we never put it in their name.

Of course I am back to babysitting. It starts a lot earlier than before because ds is starting earlier to be able to pick Elliot up at the bus stop at 4pm. He had to change because I couldn't pick her up during tax time. Since dil didn't have a job I didn't have to worry about getting her on the bus.

Hope everyone is doing well. I will try to post more often.

Hi again,

we went out to breakfast after I did the Pump & Burn workout...I got a couple of these on Ebay, the first is 30 minutes and Pump & Shred is 45 minutes. High reps, low weight and all you use is a barbell. A break from KCM which all you use are dumbells. I think alternating between the 2 types will be good.

Lori, I'm pretty sure that YardMax can be considered a good workout, along with walking Chester!

Joan, nice to have you drop by, sorry to hear about your DS and DIL...but it is probably for the best. It didn't look like they were going to work anything out..I have seen that you are posting in MFP now too..welcome back!

Off to see what the little 4 legged ones are up to....it's very quiet around here...

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Joan--

This morning I did disk 10 of STS for Ch, Bis, and Sh (56 min.). I probably went too heavy on some of the exercises (side-leaning shoulder raises with 10 lbs. and seated barbell curls with 30 lb barbell and weighted gloves) because I couldn't finish all the reps.

Deb, are those routines by Jillian Michaels?

Lori, I think yardmax is always tough. I try to do a little at a time--an hour here, an hour there--but I usually become 'possessed' with getting it done and end up sore. Yesterday I did a major cleanup on our wisteria (90 min.) and today I plan on just doing one hour of trimming on Christmas rose and peonies.

Nice to see you again, Joan. I thought you were probably overwhelmed by tax season, but it sounds like you had a lot going on in addition. Your dil always sounded difficult. Will you be able to get her out of the house?

Good morning,

I did CC #1 Revised, this morning and really tried to work harder, with Coach Sean pushing me on. 35 minutes, 225 calories. It rained overnight and is still a little misty.

Garance, you are doing great with STS! I think the highest I ever got with BB curls was 20 pounds. The workouts are from Beachbody's "Les Mills Pump" series. I only wanted to try the weight workouts so I found a couple on Ebay. They get progressively longer, starts with a 30 min, then a 45, then a 55. The whole series has cardio, kickbox, etc, and they also include a bar with weights, which I don;'t need. Just something different. I plan to alternate with these and KCM.

Hi to Josie, Lori, Valerie, & Joan!
Work, then class tonight...hope the weather gets back to sunshine...

Hi Deb and any later posters--

This morning I did Pure Spice (58 min.). I can't wait until I get all of the dances down perfectly. So far I still stumble on the moves in a few of them. But I really work up a sweat and it's fun.

Deb, I have read some very positive reviews of the Les Mills Body Pump series over at Videofitness.com, but it also sounded pretty expensive as a system. It's great that you could just pick up a few at ebay. Oh, I can do biceps with 15 lb. dumbbells or a 30 lb. barbell okay, but it's when you're seated and you have the barbell hanging a bit low over the knees that I really overestimated my strength.

Tomorrow is my blood work, so I won't do a workout. Fasting until it's done.

Looking forward to seeing the finale tonight of The Following. This has been a really great series. Reminds me a little of 24 with cliffhangers every week.

Hi Ladies!

No run this morning. To tired from all the yard work yesterday! we actually have two patios to clean and set up. one is screened in and the other is not. Both look great and looking forward to enjoying the nice weather out there.

Office girls are doing the walk dvd at lunch. We plan to do the 3mile one. forgot my weight vest!!! Oh well..I do have my ankle and hand weights so it still will be a good lunch workout. Tonight I am planning to to Xtrain Cardio Leg Blast. Seems like forever since I have done this.

Garance...great job with the weights! I do 10lbs with the side lats too but trust me when I say it is not easy but I refuse to go less weight. I can't rememeber what I use for the seated curls. When I am home I will look it up.

Deb...Les Mills Pump looks like a great workout. I have been on the fence about this one. I have spent so much $$$ lately on DVDs, weights etc. that I needed to take a break. It becomes addictive!

Joan...Welcome back! I feel for you with the tendonitis. Couple years ago I had tendonitis in my right forearm along with partial bicep tearing. The tendonitis hurt more. Took awhile to get both under control without flareups but I did and now all is good. So sorry to hear about your son and dil.

Have a great afternoon!

Good morning,

Late class last night, no workout today.

Garance, your DH must love watching do this workout! I don't think I could do that in full view...there would be too many comments everyt time he walked by..LOL. The Les Mills Pump full program is very expensive, and from what I have read, the barbell they provide with the program is really cheaply made, the clips break etc. I was not interested in the whole thing, it's somewhat like P90X with kicbox etc, but was intriged to try the weight ones. There is a lot of screaming, and loud music, that I just tune out. Funny thing was, I got the first one on Ebay, had been watching a listing for the second one, listed by the same person. When I opened mine, both were in there! I knew this was a mistake, e-mailed the seller to let her know. Horriblie if someone bid on her item and she didn't have it. She was so happy, said she was looking all over for it...she sold it to me for $25...she had it listed for $37,95...( I wasn't going to pay that much for it, I was looking to see if she sold it for that, as this was her second time listing).

Lori, you should get a heart rate monitor and see your calorie burn...I bet it's high!. See above on the Les Mills system. Some people have been able to get just the DVD's, but you have to know a "coach" or someone that sells them I think in order to do that. Still too expensive for what you get...not like an STS that's for sure. Cathe puts out the supreme workout DVD's, nothing compares to her quality of workouts. I could see myself getting really tired of all the chatter on these, most of it screaming..

Hi to Josie, Valerie, ( on a trip?) and Joan,

Work, then to the library on my way home, otherwise no other committment for the evening, except to relax. My kind of night...

Take care,

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Joan--

This morning nothing. Did my lab work. While I was waiting, I tried to read, but this man kept talking about his wife to another man about her broken rib. Really loud. Then another person took a cell phone call and again, it was really loud. Maybe it was my lack of caffeine, but I was getting a headache from all the blather. I felt sorry for the woman with the broken rib (she was in the lab) because the husband was talking about bedpans and crawling up stairs, etc.

Deb, yes, DH likes to see me dance. He also likes the music on this one. He also gets a kick out of the Jazzercise Burlesque because some of the moves are, well, a bit out there.

Lori, I was on the fence, too, about the Les Mills Pump, but I trust Deb, and if she says it's a lot of screaming, that's not for me. Probably can get the same results from Cathe's High Reps, which I like a lot.

Had some voting to do today as well.

Hi Ladies,

Only 42 more working days to go and a few of those are going to be vacation days ;)
I will be going to a sculpt class tonight. My limo birthday party was ok, a couple of the girls that went with use were drunk and the clubs that we wanted to go to would not let us in because of them. So, we ended up at my house for a couple of hours. We had had the back yard set up for my DH’s pool table party earlier that day and we ended up dancing and everyone seemed to have a good time.

I will not be going out with a bunch of people again. Next time I will meet them at a club and if things are like last time I can leave. Live and learn (my new motto) ;)

Joan, glad to hear that you are ok, sorry to hear about your DS and DIL. My DS is not happy either. They are heading for a divorce too.

Hi to Garance, Lorie, Deb and Valerie.

Josie

Good evening Ladies!

No run this morning. I did do Cardio leg blast last night and felt I needed to rest the legs a bit. Lunchtime with the girls was 2 mile leslie walk followed by Zumba Abs. So much fun! I certainly do not feeling guilty about no run.

Tonight I am planning Hardstrikes with MMA and HS heavy bag. This certainly is a calorie burner.

I willl take your advice Deb and pass on the les mills. I am so not into all the screaming either.

Garance I have high reps and have not done this workout yet. bought it in the fall. after I finish with STS I will be sure to pull this out. I am in recovery week right now and and can't wait to start up again.

Congrats Josie on 42 days. I am envious! Long time before I can retire. Fortunately, I love my job. Stinks about your Saturday night. Hate it when some in the group ruin things for the others. Sounds like you ended up having a decent time at your place.

Have a great night. Attempting to run in the morning!!!!

Good morning,

I just finished Powersculpting, one of the KCM 30 minutes to Fitness workouts...wow, my body was not cooperating this morning, I could not finish some of the sets, even using lighter weights than I did last time.

Garance, nothing more annoying than sitting in a doctor or hospital waiting room. Or any waiting room for that matter. Maybe you should get one of those Pole Dancing workout DVD's? LOL...have you ever seen those? Unbelievable. We actually had a "studio" for one of those on the main street of our neighborhood...it was upstairs from a bunch of small storefronts, and you could see them from the street...not good. It didn't last long. I wonder why?

Josie, was it your birthday this weekend? Or was the limo party for someone else? I don't blame you for not wanting to ride with that crowd again. Keep counting down those days!

Lori, recovery week? Isn't that when you do yoga, or walking? Your recovery weeks are more strenuous than my workout weeks! :)

Work, then agility class...we'll see how that goes.

Take care,

Hi Deb, Josie, and Lori--

This morning I did disk 11 of STS for back and tris (53 min.).

Deb, I draw my line in the sand at pole dancing. Reminds me too much of gym class in high school where we were supposed to crawl up a rope. I always, always had rope burn from coming down too fast.

Lori, I really liked High Reps. Not so much equipment and it goes by fast. I'm not sure what I will do for my recovery week next week. Maybe do LIS workouts.

Josie, that sounds like Hangover. Hope those ladies remember being smashed. At least you had a limo, so no one was DUI.

Gorgeous weather here this week!

good afternoon!

Yes it has been beautiful here this week! I did manage to run this morning and will skip the lunch workout. Last night was hardstrikes and finished up with cardo kick punching drills instead of heavy bag. Planning to walk Chester after work then throw in some ab work.

Deb you are funny! The way I work out you would think I should way 100lbs. My problem is I like to eat and working for an Italian Restauarant chain can be very challenging. I also have days where I am just not feeling it and not lifting the amounts I usually do. When this happens I di what I can. to me this is still better than nothing at all so don't be too hard on yourself!

I'll try to check in later! have a great afternoon!

Hi from new member

Hi Ladies,

I have just joined the forum and wasn't really sure where to start. I am 50 and have been working out in one way or another for almost 30 years, since 1984. I started running in 1994 and since then have focused primarily on running (when I wasn't injured:( ) biking and spinning with a very small amount of weight training thrown in. My husband has been pushing me to cut back on cardio and start doing more strength training and he got me started on Cathe workouts. I now have 2 X-train DVDs, Muscle Max, Core Max (I love this one!) and am thinking of investing in the STS program eventually. I've been doing Core Max a couple of times a week for the past month and am really starting to see a difference. I'm getting ready to start on the X-train workouts this week.

I spent the winter doing an indoor cycling training program (Spinervals). I've been averaging 8-10 hours a week with individual rides up to 3 hours. It's actually a training program geared toward someone doing an ironman or half ironman triathlon. Now that the weather is getting nicer I will be backing down on the indoor cycling and start running/walking again. Today I walked 4.5 miles and am going to try to do the same tomorrow. My tentative plan is going to be cardio training in the morning (running/walking or riding) and a Cathe workout in the evening after work.

Good morning all,

No workout today, late class last night. Keegan was pretty good last night, we did a lot of stuff that he likes, so he cooperated.

Irongrl, Welcome!! We are a group of 50 and over that have been doing Cathe workouts for a number of years. Nice thing about having individual check-ins is that you find a group that you have things in common with, and it's a great place to chat about workouts, or anything else that comes to mind.. Your husband sounds like a smart guy, a balance of cardio and weights is good.

Garance, LOL at the pole dance....they actually have a workout series called "Flirty Girl" workouts...my cousin was approached by one of their "coaches" and asked to become one of their trainers, I guess they go to local gyms/fitness clubs and hold classes. She asked me to go online to see if the instructor kit was on Ebay, (it's about $250 off of their site). I took a look at it.. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? They have a "chair workout" that looks very similar to a lap dance. No sweat type moves in those workouts... I told my cousin she should take a pass at that...LOL..

Lori, I hear you on the Italian restaurant food....I would not be able to work there!

Nothing much going on....oh...we decided to go to the Fox Terrier specialty show next week in Ohio...we will be driving out there Thursday, coming back Sunday. 2 dogs in the car for 5 hours each way...this will be interesting!

Hi to Josie, the vacationing Valerie, and Joan...

Beautiful here today too, love it!

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and welcome Irongirl!

This morning I did Jazzercise Burlesque (45 min.).

Deb, I think Jazzercise Burlesque is pretty tame compared to pole and lap dancing. I remember reading about a zumba instructor up in Maine who was a dominatrix on the side, but Flirty Girl sounds more like a "gentlemen's club" type of workout. Maybe Keegan and Kylee will be inspired by the fox terrier show to be even better.

Irongirl, Lori and I are doing an STS rotation now. She is a week ahead of me, but I will be finishing up meso 1 tomorrow. It really is a great series for building strength--a bit heavy on equipment, but worth it for effectiveness.

Lori, I would have a lot of difficulty working in an Italian restaurant. I do a lot of Lidia Bastianich's Italian recipes, and they seem loaded with butter and cream. I try to cut back, because frankly I don't want to look like her--a heavy Mama Mia. I also cut back on the butter and salt in Ina Garten's recipes. She is rather heavy, too. Why does tasty food have to be so fattening--why oh why?!

Another beautiful day! Glad I'm not in Minnesota, where apparently it's snowing hard.

Hi Ladies,

I did the cardio power resistance DVD today and will do the cardio recovery when I get home. I’m behind this week ;)

Deb, it was not my birthday. My birthday is in August.

Iron girl, welcome to our group. I used to run marathons, but stopped a few years ago due to a couple of bad falls. I now cycle, but at this time I’m only spinning at home or at the gym. I will have to start training again when I do the Aids Life Cycle from San Francisco to LA (545miles, 7 days) next year. I’m on my second round of Insanity.

Lori, I also love to eat, and working where you do would be so hard.

Hi to Joan and Garance!

Josie
