Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 4/24

Hi Deb and any later posters--

This morning I did Booty Barre (63 min.).

Joan, I am greatly looking forward to Cathe's new series. I always modify if I feel like it's bad for my knees, but with all of Cathe's recent cardio, there was too much impact for modifications. Sounds like St. Louis really got hit with tornados, although your early warning system prevented any fatalities. Hope your airport is up and running soon--so you can fly off to sin city! Have fun!

Valerie, how is it going with your fil? I suppose it is fortunate that you saw him before this most recent crisis.

Finally a nice spring day! Happy Easter, Deb!

We went to the Rec Center to help tear down and load the trailer, took the equipment back to the hall and unloaded it all. Whew, very tiring, then had to come home and finish cleaning up after the brunch. I still have to take the table down, and chairs to the basement, but pretty much cleaned up.

Brunch was nice, kids were cute ( as usual), Keegan was an angel around the babies and 3 year olds. He is by far, the calmest fox terrier we have every had

Valerie, how is your FIL? have you decided whether you will be going back right away?

Garance, yep, spring may finally be here. Nice yesterday, 55 and sunny.

Joan, I hope you got out of SL and are in Vegas, winning up a storm!

Hi to Josie, and Cathy!

We had a really nice day saturday and did a bike ride. not a long one, just 20 miles in 2 hours. The area we were riding gets windy as the day goes on ( onshore air flow from the sound) so we to do it early. very pleasant... would have done another sunday except it clouded up and started raining. oh, spring!

sunday we did some yard stuff, and I did stationary bike, treadmill, and an ab workout. today, still raining so will do inside exercise again.

No, FIL is not doing well. barely eating /drinking and mostly sedated on a load of pain meds thru hospice. nothing to do now but let nature take its course. not a pleasant process. MIL is sounding better, this has been an extremely long difficult process for her and I'm sure she will be relieved when it's over.

Joan, enjoy Vegas and hopefully your return flight will be uneventful.

Hi Deb and Valerie--

This morning I did both of the workouts on TLC with 2 lb. gloves (60 min.). Very good together and not jerky like that combined premix.

DH is having problems with a newborn calf. Her mom April has teats the size of potatoes so the poor thing cannot really nurse that well. Yesterday our neighbor and a whole load of kids and a dog came over to 'help'. He was once a dairy farmer and is really good with cows, so he was very helpful. The rest of the crew was totally crazy. The kids took the dog up to see the pigs because it was barking at poor April --cannot think of their name at the moment, but a crazy little dog that started running in circles around the electric fence and terrifying the pigs. Just. Plain. Zany. Made our Maxie look brilliant. He really is so good around all the animals. Deb--sounds like Keegan is lovely. The neighbor came over again this morning, sans crew, and the little heifer did get a decent meal off one of the teats, so we are hoping it gets some strength.

Excellent dinner last night. Relatives in from Idaho (sil, bil, niece and nephew) on Wednesday, so we will be going out to Mezze's again.

Sorry that things are not going well with your fil, Valerie.

Good morning all,

No workout today, I am so tired, and my back has a twinge that I am not going to make worse. I'm sure it is from hauling all that equipment into the trailer at the rec center, then unloading it all at the dog club. Anyway, tomorrow is another day. It rained so much yesterday evening, we had flood watches all over. Supposed to go to 70 today, I'll believe it when I see it.

Is anyone a little "miffed" that the presale will start the evening before for those on Face Book? I have never seen FB and don't care to sign up for it. I don't think that's right, but whatever. Is anyone going to do it?

Valerie, I hope your FIL's passing is peaceful, and your MIL is ok.

Garance, poor April and poor baby. will you have to bottle feed it?

Hi to Josie, the "gambling/rambling" Joan, & Cathy,

Take care,

I don't know if teats the size of a potato is a good or bad thing. I'm guessing that's small? will other cows nurse a calf other than their own? or is it a matter of getting this mother stimulated enough to produce enough milk? Never had much exposure to livestock. I had an uncle and cousin who had farms, one a dairy farm and one a 'truck" farm but we never got to spend much time there. knowledge and skills that are being lost to most people these days.

DH and I have a 5 day weekend starting sat and can't decide if we should do the planned trip or not. it will be a waste of time if we drive... a lot of driving too... there and have to come right back to fly to Fresno, plus it will make it even more stressful. He could linger for a couple weeks too, no way to tell. so I have to pack and plan for both trips and we will decide on basis of what happens between now and sat.

Did stationary bike, 30 on treadmill, and abs yesterday. I was starting to do disk 18 but DH needed help on a project so will shoot for that one today.

Deb, I was experimenting again with beverages and tried coconut milk, the one jillian Michaels is always recommending. well, no thank you. yuck. it has 50 calories in a cup but 5 gms of fat but it's the mouth feel for me. I've had that issue with coconut milk in recipes before but it was always the more concentrated stuff. so no, don't like it at all. can't recommend it at all. going back to almond milk which I LOVE on my oatmeal.

I also think FB is a waste of time. the whole concept doesn't thrill me. I like my communication with friends and family personal and private. so I don't care one way or the other about timing. it's probably a good way to reach a whole lot of people with one posting.

Hi Deb and Valerie--

This morning I did both of KCM's Split Sessions for upper and lower body (60 min.). The upperbody session is longer and harder than the lower body and moves really fast. I started with 15s, but moved down to 10s and then 8s. Loved the band work on the lower body.

Valerie, you must eat mighty small potatoes! DH tried to bottle feed the calf, but no luck on the first night, next morning. This morning I guess she decided to do it on her own and was sucking on the two rear teats (cows have four, and the front ones are way, way too big for sucking; the poor thing would choke). She's definitely up and running this morning--doing that cute calf thing of just a little gallop for no reason--trying out her legs. Nope, the other two cows would not take on a calf not their own. A beautiful day here--70s and sunny after last night's T-storm.

Deb, that awful little dog was a Jack Russell terrier. Never saw such a crazy dog with animals. And who would name their dog Skippy??? Nah--I don't care about facebook. I will probably do the presale, but I don't know why people get so frantic about their invoice number. I'm not a vidiot. I can wait.

Valerie, I know it's hard when someone dear is dying and they are so far away. One of my sisters was in Oklahoma and I flew out there three times but was not there when she died. I felt bad, but could not just take off time from work and two teen-aged boys. The one thing I wish I had done, though, was write her obituary and plan the funeral, because her husband was definitely heading toward dementia. He had the dates all wrong and instead of hymns my sister would have loved (e.g., "How Great Thou Art"), he had us singing "My country 'tis of thee" and "America the Beautiful"). He also invited his first wife to the funeral. Ugh--what a mess.

This is my FIL.We weren't close. even DH did not feel close to him. still, hope he has a comfortable passing. the flights between here and fresno fill up and we won't have much advance warning. I've only been to one funeral in DH's family and it will probably be a pretty simple straightforward affair. I just need to show up and not be rude to anyone. they will do some serious heavy partying, DH and I head for our motel or wherever we're staying early.

Not sure what his mother will do after this. the only reason they are still in their house is because FIL insisted. MIL will probably move to some other set up quickly, assuming she can sell the house in this crummy housing market.

jack russels are really highly wired little guys, aren't they? always seem like they need some xanax or something. was there a movie dog named skippy? what was the dog in 'something about mary"? I keep thinking of a scene where an obnoxious little dog jumps out thru a window and everyone cheers. not sure if it was skippy....

Off to do disk 18... had a tough yoga class this morning. some things I'm getting better at, some others are just hopeless.

Good morning all,

Just got up and wanted coffee this morning, really bad for some reason. Yes, I think spring is finally here. It was around 70 yesterday and sunny, then rain, then sunny again. It couldn't make up it's mind. No burst of flowers here or anything, just the "daffy dills"...( don't you love when people say it like that?).

Garance, I have only done the upper body split from the new KCM's. Glad you liked the lower. I need to do that one next. Have you tried the TLC workouts yet? I previewed some of the premixes, I want some new cardio, that is what I was hoping for with that DVD. Glad the little calf is getting some nourishment.

Valerie, I think the movie is "My Dog Skip" that had the little Jack Russel terrier. I don't remember a dog in "Something About Mary" but it was years ago when I saw that. I love your comment about just needing to show up and not be rude to anyone. I hate family gatherings that you need to watch what you do or say. Makes for a lovely time.

Well more coffee for me, I can't seem to wake up.

Later..

Hi Ladies,

Sometimes I wonder why I take vacation! So much work to come back to. I had a great time with my grandkids. We ended up going to Palm Springs to visit my DB, and stayed there 3 days. The weather was cold and overcastted where I live, but in the mid 80's in Palm Springs and my DB's complex has a pool, so the kids and I had a lot of funs swimming.

I only gained 1lb during my vacation. I'm so glad because I did not workout much other than playing with the kids. New York was great and we only had one day where it rained and it was very windy, but we still went out and had a good time.

Valerie, sorry to hear about your FIL.

Josie

that's was a one time movie for me looong ago but I was thinking an obnoxious terrier jumped out a window. matt dillon was holding the dog and everyone cheered when the dog jumped out. I always associate "skippy" with obnoxious hyperactive movie dogs, for some reason. so I wouldn't name a dog 'skippy" just for that reason, whatever the movie where I got the idea.

There are mornings where the jolt of caffeine is really lovely. I need to limit it, but even a little caffeine really gets my motor running.

Did disk 18 yesterday, along with the Abs from HR. I pushed some weights up again but I'm reaching my max for a while. I seem to sit at a level for a while and then suddenly jump up. I've decided to do deadlifts, one legged or two, but to back WAY off on weight. I did the 1 leg ones yesterday and used 15 lbs. I did rows yesterday with 55 lbs and they don't bother me at all. so go figure...

FIL is causing everyone grief because he's agitated and hollering at everyone ( can't tell what he's saying) and pounding on the table. then the drugs kick in and he goes to sleep. hope hospice knows what they're doing. fortunately he can't walk.. needs assistance to get out of bed... so they don't need to worry about him wandering at night. this may not be as quick as we thought at first.... not necessarily a good thing.

DH has a lot of family we don't see often. just weddings and funerals. so it's hard to know what to talk to anyone about. I get along fine with sisters, brother & their families, but the older aunts & uncles, they all run together. some serious drinking goes on though, and that gets tedious. I like a couple glasses of wine but then I call it a night.

Hi Deb, Josie, and Valerie--

This morning I did Fat Burning Fusion (46 min.)

Deb, I did both of the TLC workouts back-to-back on Monday. I really didn't like the premix that tried to combine elements from each, because they are such different workouts.

Welcome back, Josie! I remember that Saturday that was so windy.

Student presentations again this afternoon. Then out to dinner tonight.

The chef sent DH this link:

http://theoatmeal.com/comics/pigs

Very funny!

Good morning all,

Went to a nice dinner last night with my cousin and my friend. We talked, and talked and could have talked for more hours if I didn't have to get up for work today. A great time.

Josie, I hear you on the vacation return to work, ugh. At least you did have a good time with family etc.

Valerie, I wish I had yours and Garances workout determination. I have to get my mojo back. I won't even get on the scale. A Jack Russel is like our dog but on mega caffine. I mentioned the movie you were talking about to DH and he reminded me that in the movie the dog ends up in a full body cast. Do you remember that part?

Garance, I am determined to do my rotation with the new DVD's starting this weekend. What's Fat Burning Fusion?

Hi to Joan, & Cathy,

Take care,

Hi Deb, Josie, and Valerie--

This morning I did Xtend Barre (55 min.). I confess that I didn't work that hard doing it because I did not want to get up this morning. A late night out with family. Fun, but too late for this old dame.

Deb, Fat Burning Fusion is Ellen Barrett. I really am fond of her workouts--Barefoot Cardio, Skinny Sculpt, and Slim Sculpt. All 45 min. long and I just feel good after I have done them. I would describe them as low intermediate in intensity. Absolutely no dread factor.

Valerie, I have not seen that film, but after witnessing Skippy's crazy behavior around our animals, I can completely understand wanting to throw it out the window.

Pouring rain here. I'm just glad I don't live in the places that seem to be getting ravaged by tornadoes. Our relatives from Idaho told us that they still have tons of snow. They live just over the mountain from Jackson Hole and they see the Tetons every day, so I cannot feel too sorry for them.

Lynda... does your ID family live near Driggs? we spent much of our last vacation there, hiking into the Tetons from the ID side. Lovely place. Much less congested than the WY side of the Tetons. winter is hanging around very late this year, for us too.

I didn't like the movie ... very crude humor... but I DID like to see the dog head go the window. I don't remember him ending up in a body cast... it was a long time ago and I only sat thru it once. ben stiller, cameron diaz, matt dillon, don't remember who else. may not have been a jack russel either. some kind of hyperactive little dog. don't know why the movie scene popped into my head...

Did stationary bike and treadmill yesterday. went to yoga this morning. will do disk 19 today, or maybe just more cardio. still cold and raining, so no cycling until it gets a bit more spring-like.
Tornados scare the sh!t out of me. I used to get paralyzed with fear when there were warnings and thunderstorms and once was babysitting a group of kids during a bad storm with tornadoes nearby. It's one of the reasons I moved out west... I could not live with that fear multiple times a year, year after year. I don't worry about spiders, snakes, but tornados, no, I can't live where they occur regularly. I used to work for an Indiana based company and hated going back there for that reason alone.

Deb, can you work out at a different time, like right after work? might be too much of a time crunch, but I never did like working out early and like it much more now that I can work out later in the day. I actually like 3-5 pm best, plus it keeps me from pre-dinner snacking.
good work josie, not gaining. It's so easy to pack on lbs with food accessible and activity not so much.

I think eating crap is like putting poison in your body. I feel so crappy, and I know why.

What is happening all around is horrible, Mother Nature is not happy for some reason. those poor people in the south and midwest!

Agility class tonight, then tomorrow I get my other car out of storage, and another agility class. Right now I would like to crawl back into bed.

Take care,

Deb, it's time to re-group. try something different? just a good long walk at a decent speed is a great workout and mostly mindless.... something outside for a change? would DH go along too? Assuming your weather is at all reasonable? Most days I'm fine hitting the basement gym but it's balanced with outdoor things when the weather is decent.
you're right though, awful weather. I couldn't live in tornado country. this year though it seems like they're sprouting up in dozens in places I didn't think tornados were common.

I did disk 19 or 20 yesterday, forget which number, the next leg disk. all of a sudden I can do more weight or maybe it's the tri-set format. charged thru it in maybe 45 min. It's all standing work, hardest for me the sit-n-stands. left side good, rt side not, no weight. something about the position.... squats, lunges etc seem pretty easy now. I try to go lower on paper plates .. maybe it will happen gradually. cathe's crew seems to get way lower than I can but I don't have a mirror to see myself.

I think I'll be gone the beginning of next week. DH and I want to head east for a couple days for some hiking and cycling. we can't go into a holding pattern because FIL might crash at any time. this could go on for weeks or could be over in an instant.

Hi Deb, Josie, and Valerie--

This morning I did Just Dance (50 min.).

I'm dragging, too, Deb. We had bil, sil, and their teenagers over for dinner last night, so another late night. The weather yesterday was pretty ugly until the late afternoon, which was nice, because dh could show them the farm. They are headed back to Philadelphia for a memorial service for her mom, then back to Idaho. Yes, Valerie, they are very close to Driggs--Victor Idaho.

Well, I have a set of papers coming in this afternoon, so I will have a really bad weekend. I hope some of them are really good, like they were last time. I'm going to try to get them graded quickly, because I know that I have two more sets coming in at the end of the semester.

Final class on Lear this afternoon. Then we spend the last two weeks on Macbeth and Beyond the Pleasure Principle by Freud. The end is in sight.

What an interesting place to live. I know we've been thru Victor but will have to look at a map to remind myself. we've stayed in a campground at the end of the road just east of Driggs more than once. very nice as campgrounds go. actually the campground is across the WY border.

the late night stuff really does me in too. I don't recover quickly if I stay up past my bedtime and lose several hours of sleep. I can't sleep in the next day to catch up... it's as if once the sleep is missed it's not recoverable. I wake up at my usual time in the am and can't sleep later.
have a great weekend everyone! I amy check in tomorrow but will probably be gone the beginning of next week.
