Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 4/20

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Burn Sets ch, ba, sh (50:43).

I don't think I would have any interest in the streaming of Cathe's workouts. It sounds a bit pricey to me--another monthly cost to add on to cable DVR, Netflix, Amazon Prime. I sincerely hope Cathe does not give up making dvds.

Well, the weather definitely turned back to early spring today--only in the 40s and they are predicting some rather gusty winds. Too bad--I was really enjoying the first hint of summery weather. We did have someone do our windows and screens today. Wonderful job! Now the feisty male robins will probably start diving at their reflections.

I heard about the President's visit too. He is on his way to Asia and did the stopover in Osa. When I think of all the disasters and shootings he has been to visit plus the returning dead soldiers, it makes me wonder why anyone would want to be President.

I like to bring my lunch to my office. Definitely best not to go out too often--expensive, time-consuming, and too many calories!

Hi Ladies,

Went spinning today and tomorrow I will be going to the body pump class. I'm a bit sore today from yesterday's class :).

Deb, my DD will not be joining me this year because she just started working. I'm going to miss her. She and my DH are going to drop me off and stay for the opening ceremonies

Valerie, when the President comes to LA it creates a big traffic mess. He has been wonderful with the families of all the victims of the many disasters that he has attended.

Hi to Garance, Judy and Lori!

Josie

Good evening ladies!

This morning was speed 2.0 and tonight I did about 35 minutes of Barre. I am really aiming to do Barre twice a week and so far I have been keeping up with it.
I like that as hard as it is at times I feel very peaceful while doing the workouts. Nice change from all the high intensity I usually do.

Josie...very nice your family will be there for the ceremonies. My family did the same when I did the Pan Mass Challenge. One year my ex and I had bought a tandem bike and we both did the ride together. Was a lot of fun.

Lynda...I am enjoying the streaming but bought in mainly for the Cathe Live which I know I will love. I also like the idea that all her furture new workouts will be included. The next set she produces I am not going to buy and use the streaming only and see how it goes. Looking thru all the posts cathe still plans to produce DVD's.

Valerie...lol with your DH. He likes the savings!

Deb...yes I bought in on the streaming and I hook my ipad up to the tv to stream. They mention they will start adding premixes soon with the newer workouts first and work backwards. I think they want to get things running smoothly and cathe live up first. I do a lot of premixes too so I look forward to them.

Judy...hope your enjoying some more workouts. :)

Have a great night all!!!!!

Good morning,

Well, all moved in to the new office. I left around 5:30, before my computer arrived so I don't know if that got hooked up and is working or not. I'll find out when I get there today. The tech guys were not supposed to leave until all the computers were up and running. We'll see.

Valerie, there is some new streaming thing that was on the news yesterday, because I guess it gets and streams the broadcast stations but has not paid them for it like the cable companies have to do. I have no idea how to "stream"...I got a good old fashioned antenna for $14.99, and get all the broadcast stations just fine. :). I got it about a year ago and I think I may have turned the TV on once since then, just to see if it worked.

Lynda, I think the Cathe streaming was a little pricey too. What kinds of things do you bring to your office for lunch?

Judy, how is your kitty doing and FIL in the new place?

Josie, too bad your DD can't do the ride with you this year, but great that she and your DH will be at the opening ceremony.

Lori, You are doing great with all the workouts you do! As for trying the streaming even with any new workouts, I would have to get one of those special Apple cables, to hook up to the TV in the basement, then take the iPad down there, and bring it back up, etc...seems so much easier to pop a DVD in the player. Part lazy, and part technology resistant! LOL..

Work, then home to crash. I still have not put everything away from Easter....yep, lazy.

Take care,

Deb I think the company is called Aero. I heard a radio interview about it the other day think there's some legal action ongoing about it. not sure what level of court it's at but expect it will have an impact . had something to do with a all the TV affiliate stations that pay for content too, if this is the same thing.

I'm a little technology resistant too. cell phones would rather talk on a land line. voice quality is SO much better and it always works not like the smart phone that seems to do what it wants half the time. I use one, like the convenience, but people call from their cars breaking up and echoing, call dropping off.. not worth the time to try to hear what they're saying.

streaming though, I am interested. we pay every month for cable service and hardly watch anything but the evening news and this is the cheapest package they offer. bunch of channels filled with crap I hardly ever look at. so if we can get local/national news by streaming and drop the rest, I think I'd go for it. Our TV isn't that old, a plasma flat screen, but I don't know if it has the needed connections. we'll see. our basement TV however is old. still works fine for playing DVD's but pretty sure that will need replacing so there goes the first few months of savings!

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Jazzercise Dance Hiit (47 min.).

Deb, I always bring some fruit and raw veggies and alternate between a half sandwich and Greek yoghurt with granola. Today it's a cracked pepper turkey and baby Swiss cheese sandwich, strawberries, and baby carrots. I also brought a 7.5 oz can of Coca-Cola Zero, but more often I stop by my old office bldg. and get a latte from the machine there. Tomorrow it's Dannon Light and Fit Greek yoghurt, raspberry, with 1/4 C. of vanilla almond granola, more strawberries and carrots. Hope everything is all set for you in your new office. Sounds like a major production.

I guess I am a popular culture junkie. I love several shows right now: Game of Thrones, Veep, Fargo, Orphan Black, Nashville, Scandal, The Good Wife, The Americans, Elementary, and I always do my cleaning while half-watching, listening to MSNBC. Starting in May Amazon Prime is going to begin streaming some older HBO series--The Sopranos, Deadwood, and The Wire (this one I really want to binge watch--it's supposed to be absolutely superb and I never watched it). Because of the mountains around here, there is absolutely no way we could get any reception with a simple antenna. It's either dish or cable.

I guess I will have to read the threads about Cathe continuing to make DVDs. I was worried that she might give up on them altogether if she makes enough money on this streaming subscription. I just prefer the ease of getting up in the morning and grabbing a dvd to plop into the player and let her rip.

Valerie, I think there is some kind of Supreme Court case about streaming. Networks fighting it being free or something. I know Amazon Prime paid HBO for these old series rights.

ttfn

Lynda, thanks for the tip on amazon prime streaming.... DH wanted to watch Sopranos again and I liked Deadwood. (maybe this will jump start the move to streaming) I liked The Wire too though as I recall it didn't have subtitles available and it was hard to understand sometimes. sometimes hard to follow ... that was a while ago, like the Sopranos. I think I watched it on rental videotapes! watching most series in a shorter time will enhance them enormously. not necessarily binge watching, but not seasons a year apart.

I didn't realize it was at supremes already...thought it might have been district court ...
It seems the number of people buying DVD's has dropped sharply. Costco is a good indicator. they don't stock anywhere near as many as they used to. I will always want to option to have a disk but it's funny how quickly things change. maybe we'll all adjust to streaming only.... we were watching a movie today, "Parkland" about the Kennedy assassination. Zapruder's phone kept ringing and DH said, "why doesn't he just unplug it?" he forgot phones were "hard wired" in 1964 and the best you could do was( maybe) adjust the volume of the ring. new houses had jacks but in older houses, the phone was hard wired to the wall and didn't move and could not be disconnected.

Hi Everyone,

Today I did a 30 mile indoor ride. It took 94 minutes. I really needed to get a long ride in. I haven't been working out as much as usual, with all that has been going on the last couple of weeks.

Chino and Shadow are doing very well. They are bonding with each other and that makes me so happy! I was worried about Chino after we lost Echo and he seems to be doing much better now that he has a playmate.

FIL seems to be settling into his assisted living pretty well. He is still quite confused and doesn't really understand what happened the night that he went out and got lost. He does seem to understand that he needs to be where he is now, which is good.

Lori-DH is a sweetheart! He is very supportive of my working out. I was surprised that he jumped on the streaming like he did though, since I have so many workout DVDs now. Probably since he sees that streaming will eventually replace physical media, and he thinks we are being proactive.

Deb-I stream from my computer. I use the laptop that I have been playing my workout DVDs on. I could probably do it from my phone too.
So far I really like it. It's very easy to find the workouts and faster than using a DVD, also the bonuses and 100 rep maxes are easy to find, like Lori said.

Lynda-I really like the DVDs too, I do feel bad about the cost of streaming workouts that I already own. If I decide to keep the streaming membership I may try to sell some of my DVDs. I guess if I find myself using the streaming more than I use DVDs then I will keep the membership.

Hi to Josie & Valerie

Judy

Good evening ladies!

This morning I substituted ruthless fast slow burn for the scheduled T25 and tonight I chose a margarita over a workout.

Valerie...I remember having the phones hardwired. My have things changed!

Lynda...thanks on the reminder of Fargo! Completely forgot there is a series on TV. Is it as good as it looked? I am going start to record the series. Unbelievable windy here today!

Deb...I have an older TV in my workout room. It is a large projection TV that is about 15 years old. I found the right cables to hook my ipad up. I think I bought it on amazon. I leave them all plugged in and just hook the ipad up when I need too. I love technology so I do not mind the extra steps.

Hi to Josie and Judy!!

Hi Ladies,

Body pump was good today. I have been experimenting with the coconut oil and have finally found a good deodorant by mixing a dime size amount of coconut oil and the same amount of baking soda and applying it to my underarms. I have tried every deodorant from the health store to the clinical strength ones and nothing has worked. Ever since I went through menopause I stink and have to wash several times per day and re-apply the deodorant. I have been trying it all week and I don't even smell after my workouts :) I love it!!

Judy, glad that your kitties are getting along and that your FIL is settling in. You and your DH finally have peace of mind.

Garance, I love Fargo, GOT and I used to love The Wire. I also listen to MSNBC when I'm cleaning :)

Lori, sometimes you just have to have a margarita ;)

Hi to Deb and Valerie!

Josie

Good morning, Finally Friday!

The weekend could not come soon enough for me.

Valerie, Unless you like the cable news networks, I think you would be good with an antenna! I get HD tv with it and the picture is better than when I had cable. Then if you do the streaming, you could pay the little amount that costs, ( I heard $8-$10 a month), and get what you want to actually watch, like Netflix or Prime. I really enjoy Prime, for the shows you can get and all the free shipping with Amazon. I still have a hard wired phone. Yes, believe it or not!

Lynda, nice lunches! I usually bring salad greens, with broiled chicken, grapes or strawberries in the salad, and homemade dressing. With a piece of fruit, or string cheese and apple. Also bring Greek yogurt as a snack. Easter threw me off the good food and I have not been able to get back on track. I am really liking The Good Wife. I watch 2 episodes a night after dinner.

Judy, glad to hear that your FIL is settling in at the assisted living place. It has to give you and your DH some peace of mind. Also that Chino and Shadow are good together. Shadow is a girl right?

Lori, choosing a margarita over a workout is ok! I have been choosing chocolate over everything all week. :( I need to check out Fargo....loved the movie. I hope it's on Prime.

Josie, coconut oil is amazing stuff! That's great that you found something that works!

Work, agility class, then home to crash. It's been a stressful week and I need some down time.

Take care,

Deb-yes, Shadow is a girl. I hope you get to relax this weekend, it sounds like you have had a stressful week.

Funny ...after menopause I lost body "fragrance". either that or my sense of smell died!it was like hormones were the source. I took very low level hormones for years (for hot flashes and sleep issues) but 6 years ago had to quit them altogether. and after that I became totally odorless. can't generate much sweat no matter how hard I work, and what little I do is "fragrance free". I haven't bought deodorant or antiperspirant for years. Josie I have heard and read that coconut oil works as a deodorant. I would think it might cause stains?

Lori I will look at my basement TV today to see if there are any external plugs to connect anything. yes, sometimes the margarita is the best workout going!

Deb when we first moved here we put up a roof antenna but it didn't work. we could get a flickering, shadowy.. semi picture. not watchable. very hilly here and we are a long way from where things are broadcast. it will have to be thru internet service but I feel stupid paying for cable TV when we watch so little. so this will change, now that DH is agreeable.
I doubt you have the kind of phone I meant. I meant the old black dial phones that were connected to the wall and were unmoveable. no pinch clip to change anything out. It used to drive me crazy because I worked 3rd shift and there was no way to silence the blasted thing. I used to bury it with pillows! the phone co owned the phones and when you moved, you left the phone, just like you left the toilet or the sink. when you moved, you got a new phone number because the number was attached permanently to the phone itself.

Happy Friday!

No workout for me today. Tomorrow I will be spinning and doing a body pump class and on Sunday I plan on doing a double spin class. My riding group is going up PCH and I don't like that route.

Valerie, you are so lucky about being odorless :). It was the opposite for me, I did not take anything for menopause. I have not had any problems with staining.

Deb, you deserve some rest. Enjoy the weekend.

I will be back later.

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Flextrain (56:36).

Deb, your lunches sound excellent. Since I almost always make a salad for dinner, I haven't brought salads to my office for lunch. Fargo is a brand new series (only been on for two weeks), so I doubt it will be on Amazon Prime. Coen brothers gave their approval, and it definitely feels like the original film. Billy Bob Thornton plays a really creepy villain; Martin Freeman is the bullied wimp; and Colin Hanks plays a good guy cop. Makes me cold just watching it! You really should try Orphan Black. The first season is on Amazon Prime, and it's really good. The second season is on BBC America and I just started it last Saturday.

Judy, that's wonderful about your FIL. It will be even better when he can be moved closer. Your pics of Shadow and Chino are heartwarming. No more heartbreaks!

Josie, like Valerie I just stopped underarm sweating after menopause. Very weird because I always would wear dress shields to avoid embarrassment, then poof!, no more sweat. I guess I should say perspiration (Mother said, "Men sweat; women perspire."). Sounds like we have the same taste in popular culture.

Lori, I bet you will like Fargo. Windy here too, although I did manage to work more in my gardens because the sun was out. I just ordered a new barre workout from Amazon and feel inspired by you to get back into it. It really does shape your legs in a very different way from weights.

Off to see the Grand Budapest Hotel this weekend. It's a Wes Anderson film and I'm not one of his fans, but the reviews have been so good I thought I would try this one. Also love Ralph Fiennes.

Good evening ladies,

This morning was T25 ript circuit. It was ok. This is when I start getting a little bored with T25. This workout is circuit of cardio and then weights. The weight routines are no where near as tough as cathe and the cardio is easier too. So I never feel like I am getting a workout I could get by doing a tough Cathe. I may start substituting a little more but not tell my friend. He is doing so well so I do not want to demotivate him. ;). Tonight I did 20 minutes of barre and that was it.

Lynda...glad I have refreshed Barre for you. I am really like the results. I have thick legs...they have a nice shape but are thick. I feel my thighs are leaning out in a nice way. Which dvd did you buy? I just purchased susan bowen barre amped bootcamp and also borrowed from a friend Tracey Mallett Booty Barre based on your recommendation. I am going to try them both out this weekend. Pretty sure I will not be able to walk on Monday! Enjoy the film!

Judy...your kitties are beautiful! Thank you for sharing the pictures. Have you done any more Cathe streaming workouts? So glad to hear your FIL is settling in.

Valerie...when you mentioned hardwire phones that is exactly what I thought of and remembered the phone company owned the phones. You could not go to a store and by a phone like you can now. And then if you needed a phone installed in another room they have to come out and install the jack. Such a pain! Kids do not know how easy some things are now!

Josie...Funny we should be talking about underarm sweating. I have noticed this past year I am also not sweating as much under the arms. Never put two and two together!

Deb...enjoy the weekend. Relax you deserve it!

Good morning!

Busy day today, I have class at 11:00, but will be stopping by the new office location to see how the move of another one of my departments into the building is going. I'll go on my way to class, Keegan will wait in the car. I thought I would post a couple of pics from Josie's 100 mile ride, and her and her "peanuts" :)

Judy, the kitties are so sweet!

Valerie, I think menopause changes a lot of things. I found in the last 5 years or so, I no longer have to shave legs or underarms, maybe once every couple of months or so. Virtually no hair grows there any longer. Strange but maybe one of the few benefits of menopause. :).

Josie, thanks for sending the pics. Posted here for others to see.

Lynda, Amazon Prime has Fargo, only you have to pay for each episode. :(. I'll wait until it's free. have you ever seen or read the review on Mr.Selfridge from Masterpiece? It looks like a good one too.

Lori, with you and Lynda so positive about barre workouts, it makes me want to take out Cathe's and try it...a premix of course!

Deb, I agree with the decrease in shaving "requirements". I used to be embarrassed because I was so hairy that I could hardly shave fast enough, and after menopause it decreased dramatically. still need to, but not as critical which I am happy about. Lynda, I used to need dress shields too because I'd perspire thru my suit jackets sometimes. I didn't notice the decreased sweating immediately because I didn't need suits when I lost my job, but it was like a switch got flipped. no sweat!
Terrific pic of you Josie! and the peanuts. thanks Deb for doing the transferring.

Judy your kitties are adorable. glad to hear FIL has settled in. now you can sleep knowing he has people looking out for him 24/7, something he needs. maybe with more frequent support he will respond like my aunt did.

I'm been remiss about posting my workouts. we did a 25 mile ride yesterday. second one this week. we also are planning a several day trip, probably leaving sunday. DH woke up with a bit of a sore throat though, so not 100% sure. sucked in a lot of pollen yesterday so maybe it's nothing.

I didn't like barre workouts much. I have big legs. I feel oxen-like doing them. plus, as I've found from yoga, my hips joints don't rotate outward like most and many positions are not possible for me. It balances out because my shoulders are very open and inclined toward yoga poses but after YEARS my hips are not getting any closer. Frustrating. Modify, modify. Like most, I tend to do things I feel successful at and barre didn't feel good.

Hi Everyone,

DH and I spent today helping SIL clean some of the clutter out of FIL's house. They had a free electronic recycle day in Ann Arbor so we were able to get most of the old electronics and TVs out of the house. That was quite a workout for everyone, especially DH, who had to do most of the heavy lifting.
Speaking of hardwired phones, FIL still had old rotary dial princess phones in his bedrooms, the same kind I had back in the 70's when I had a "teen" line in my bedroom.
It is a huge relief that he is out of the house. Now that he is in memory care, we know he is safe, he will never drive again, can't wander out in the middle of the night, and will never be alone. The only thing that could make it better would be if we can transfer him to the place that is 2 miles from us. Where he is now is about 20 miles away. We have been going to see him almost every night. DH & SIL are spending a lot of time there to help him get settled in and to make sure the staff is taking good care of him.

Deb-I hadn't made the connection, but I don't have to shave my legs very often either. I'm sure it's a menopause thing.

Josie-I haven't taken anything for menopause yet. I don't think I will. I have been sleeping a little better, maybe because I've cut my caffeine down to a very low level most days.

Lynda-Thank you, we hope that Chino and Shadow will be very healthy for a long time.
I have a salad almost every day too.

Lori & Valerie-Thanks, I love sharing photos of the cats! I think I will stream Cathe's Turbo Barre workout tomorrow or Monday. I'll have to use a chair, but that should be ok.
