Pentagenarians & Beyond W/B 3/30

Good morning,

Today I did X-Train Legs standing only premix.

Garance, right now coconut oil is the miracle stuff to use. Wait a year. LOL. I like it a lot though, and think it may stick around as a favorite for a long while. It has so many great uses. I take fish oil every day still, and I have been thinking about the mercury issue too. I guess we should eat more salmon...but is that really ok? Is wild caught really wild? Who knows.

Josie, I used the coconut oil to remove eye make up yesterday, ( after your post here) then under my eyes for the night. So nice. I think they mentioned using as a deodorant in that link I posted.

Valerie, thanks for the bursitis info. I am not sure if this is what I have. Sometimes my knee kills me, other days I don't even know that there is anything wrong. Strange. On our talk radio station yesterday they had someone from your area giving an update on the slide and people still missing etc. They mentioned that it can be up to 15 feet deep in some areas. Awful.

Judy, I like the Mercola products a lot. I get my probiotics from there, plus vitamin B and D sprays. It's so much easier than taking pills. I would love to do his eating plan but it is tough to follow. Very restrictive. He is the one that got me started on getting beef, chicken and eggs from a local farmer instead of the supermarket....not that I have done that yet. I want Lynda to send me stuff from her place...LOL.

Lori, Isn't Amazon amazing? When I see things on the news that they are losing millions of dollars, I scratch my head.."huh"? How could that be? Everyone uses Amazon.

Work, then home to relax. I was so tired for some reason yesterday, I went to bed at 8:45 and slept until 3:45 without waking up once! A miracle for me.

Take care,

Everything coconut has been "hot" lately. I do like the oil a lot. but I coconut is sort of 'the flavor of the month".

I never took fish oil because of the potential mercury contamination. I eat a little salmon but the fact is big fish eat small fish who eat smaller things ... concentrations of contaminants build up, in the fat. I think most ocean fish are fairly safe.... but there are limits on swordfish already. it's so sad that we are making such a mess so quickly of the oceans.

Deb, there are supposedly areas where the mud is 70-80 feet deep. and some of it is still too liquidy and bottomless to be searched. they've consulted with specialists, and feel they can search a smaller area where it's most likely for body recovery. things are so torn up they need to use dental records.
most of these people did not have insurance to cover ( the ones who lived) and many had unpaid mortgages and financed cars that are all gone. for insurance purposes there is a difference between mud slides and mud debris flows, and people in this area would likely been unable to qualify for insurance anyway. sort of like getting earthquake insurance. ... if you live where there might be an earthquake, you can't buy insurance at all, or it's extremely expensive and has a huge deductible... sounds like the process to get it sorted out will go on forever.

and our stupid garage door spring just broke... but lucked out and got an appointment for this afternoon because someone cancelled.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Flextrain (56:36).

Deb, my doctor was the one who reviewed all of my supplements and told me that unless I wanted to spend about 50-75 dollars a month on Mercury-free fish oil, to just eliminate it. He also raised doubts about the calcium, but said to keep on taking D. The wild caught salmon at our local Stop and Shop is about 2-3 times more expensive than the farm-raised, and to my eye, it looks a lot redder. But I tend to eat our meat and local eggs most of the time and seafood when we go out to dinner.

Lori, I checked out Dreambody and I don't think it's for me at the full price. You were lucky to see it on sale and you will have to review it for us. I would have liked more clips of the individual workouts too. Nice here again today, but we still have some clumps of frozen snow that will last forever probably. I love Amazon too. So reliable.

Judy, I have High Step Challenge, but I haven't done that one in ages. I should pull it out and review it again. Everything old gets new again after time passes.

Valerie, around here something always needs to be fixed. Today DH replaced one of my headlights, and he says that the other one, which was older, will probably go next. He keeps maintenance records on everything since he's my handyman for almost everything. I agree with you on the flight. Probably something will show up coincidentally in a couple years. It just seems so mysterious.

Josie, that is one ginormous ride you are planning! I am so impressed. I hope it is a beautiful day for you.

Have a gap right now waiting for the garage door guy.

I am suspicious of crazy diet trends and what I think is diet weirdness! I have done a few strange things myself in the past, however. I'm convinced there is something going on with wheat though I don't claim to know what. celiac disease ( gluten intolerance) used to be a very odd, almost unheard of entity but the incidence has jumped way up in recent years.
I think awareness and more testing for it is behind some of the increase but it seems way too inconvenient for people to be doing just because GF is trendy right now. I have one family member who was deathly ill before her celiac diagnosis. too many people seem to complain of problems when they eat wheat products for it to be all imaginary. so I wonder if all the tinkering on a genetic level has produced a product that triggers an allergic type response in more people than old style wheat did. seems like a lot of people are trying to make eating grain a bad thing. whoops garage door guy is here.

Good morning,

Got up at 3:40 and did X-train Bi's and Tri's, one of the shorter premixes.
I got my Beachbody stuff yesterday, will probably start those workouts Sunday. I got an extra workout thrown in by ordering through Mary over at Totalfitnessdvd's...it's a Plyo workout, which I don't usually do because of the impact.

Valerie, isn't it always something going wrong around the house? It's never ending. Lucky for you to get that appointment so quickly. You are right...grains are on the "bad list" for now...I think that the way that commercial cattle is fed and all the manufacturing being done for crops etc. is causing a lot of the issues with people and their illnesses. We need to go back to eating fresh food that is not manufactured with chemicals etc. Easier said than done right? We are a society geared up around convenience.

Garance, I am on the fence about the fish oil, but I do not eat any salmon, etc, so no EFA's from food here. I also take vitamin D, and should be taking magnesium to go along with it, but don't. Also vitamin K is supposed to go with it, but that affects blood coagulation, and I have a blood thing ( Factor 5) that means that my blood clots very easily. I have to have a Heparin drip whenever I have surgery to avoid clotting.
Do you eat a lot of vegetables?

Hi to Josie, Judy, & Lori,

Work, etc etc....

Take care,

If I have time, I always volunteer to take a cancellation if they get one. paid off instantly this time. but yes, something is always not working right or breaking. DH is good at fixing things. saves a lot of money and time if you can do it yourself.

I ended up taking yesterday mostly off...did some garden stuff and never did a true workout. so today I went to yoga and then we did a mt bike for almost 2 hours at a nearby area. was supposed to rain early so we didn't take time to drive far. it's pretty much an hour uphill with a few short breaks. so downhill almost the entire way back. a nice viewpoint. fun ride.

I'll have to look up factor 5.. I don't remember coagulation process well anymore. when I was in school there were 12 factors, I expect there are more known now. when I was on Coumadin it took almost the whole treatment time to get the dose up to where they wanted it. I eat so many vegies and the vitamin k affects how Coumadin works. they said it was OK as long as I was consistent and I was, but maybe they didn't believe me when I said how many vegies I ate.

People are always ( and have for thousands of years) breeding plants to get better flavor, yield, and other benefits. No problem with that. it's only recently they've been sticking odd ball genes into the mix there so we can have "Round up ready" grains and other things that can't be done with normal cross breeding. they've done it to wheat and corn and soybeans and I don't know what else. and guess what... the weeds are developing tolerance to round up. so it will get crazier.

deb, we posted at the same time...but yes..where's everyone?

Good evening ladies!

Deb...you cracked me up with your post!!!!

Ended up taking a rest day yesterday. Worked late and DH was home when I finally got home we had a nice night chatting about everything and anything.

This morning was T25 speed 1.0 and tonight was Turbo Barre. I did the entire workout minus the abs. Tomorrow is T25 ab intervals and last week I really felt it the next day. I just had to use my Barre and I'll have to say I really like it. Can't wait to lower it and try out some plank pull ups.

Valerie...why were you on coumadin? When my DH broke his ankle he developed a blood clot and was on coumadin for 6 months and had to have weekly blood tests to adjust the amount. Once the dosage was set then yes consistancy was the key which was really hard for him to do. The poor people on it for the rest of their lives...but I guess it beats the alternative.

Deb...have fun with the new workouts. Funny how we are all different. I love anything plyo. I have not received mine yet. I received a tracking number but the package seems to be moving rather slowly. Driving me nuts. So used to the speed of Amazon!

I am not a pill person and have I hard time taking vitamins. I have tried so many times thru the years to be consistent. Only just lately I have been good about taking a probiotic and vitamin d. Been doing it for about 6 to 8 weeks and that is a record for me. I take 2,000 mg of metformin (diabetes) and that is the only thing I have ever been consistent with.

Have a great night ladies! Hi to Lynda, Judy and Josie!

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did XTrain Ride and this morning I did Muscle Max and 1 segment of Stretch Max. Last night DH and I took a tour of a new "Anytime Fitness". We liked it better than Fitness 19 and a big plus for DH is that it is open 24 hours. We have a free week to use it, and I think we will probably join.

Deb-the Beach body workouts sound good. I checked out the Totalfitnessdvds site and will probably order something from there soon. I'll have to check out the Mercola supplements. I always like to try new things.

Lori- your Barre sounds really good. I haven't done a lot of the Barre workouts but I'll have to look into them.

Valerie-way to go on the mountain bike ride! I can't wait to get outside to ride. Hopefully soon!

Hi to Lynda & Josie!

Judy

Good morning,

did not have the great sleep that I had for the 2 nights previously, but still got up and did a 35 minute treadmill workout. That's it for this week. I was following Candace's 5/week rotation that she posted here, using the x-train workouts. Sunday I will start with the Beach Body ones.

Valerie, I agree on trying to fix things yourself if you can. John fixed a drain clog recently that I was sure we needed a plumber for. Saved us about $300. That's exactly what I have read on Vitamin K and blood thinning etc. Factor 5 is where your blood clots too easily. It runs in families, I have it, my brother does, and one of his 3 daughters. Weeds resistant to Round UP due to genetic engineering of plants scares me...what are we really eating and what is it doing to us?

Lori, I know....you get really spoiled with Amazon service. However, right now I am in a dispute with one of the sellers over there....it's rare, I don't blame Amazon of course...just a outright bad listing and she is not making it right.. and the bad listing is still up there!

Judy, if you order anything from TotalFitness, go through Mary...her site for there is

totalfitnessdvds.net... it's the same site, but I think she gets the sale, and you can e-mail her, if there is any issue etc she takes care of it. I had a couple e-mail exchanges with her when I ordered the Beach Body stuff, I messed up the order and she fixed it for me right away. She also through in the extra Plyo workout...( which anyone who orders through a coach gets).

Hi to Josie & Lynda,

Work, then agility class tonight,

Stay warm!

Good morning ladies,

Up early but decided no morning workout. I will plan on my t25 tonight though.

I am finding when I do barre my butt is really sore the next day!. I am sure after a few times my glutes will adjust. Boy it really gets you deep. When doing the video the girls have their legs up so high. I am ok with the height when we are doing straight leg movement but when she is bending the knee and moving front to back then hold four counts...wow. I noticed Brenda is lower like me so that made me feel better. Looking foward to other Barre workouts.

Deb...Thanks for letting us know about Mary's site. I had know idea hers was with the .net. Good to know as I have heard good things about her. Turbo Barre is a long workout and she has some great premixes to shorten it up.

I am the home fixer at our house. Love my DH dearly but household repair is not his thing. Fortunately for him, I grew up with 4 brothers no sisters and I was always involved in home improvements.

Have a great day all!

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

Yesterday I did After Burn (54:00) and took Max for an after dinner walk of a couple miles. The weather and light was finally perfect. Today I did Burn Sets bis and tris (37:15). I wanted a short workout because I was doing some advance cooking this morning--made my Greek meat rolls. They just taste better if they have plenty of time in the sauce.

Yesterday the college was doing some maintenance work on their network, so I didn't post and didn't want to type on my Ipad.

The other thing about the totalfitness site is that if you use the 10off promo code, you will get 10 percent off your order. It's a very good place to go for a big selection of dvds--especially now that Collage is no more.

Lori, I was really into barre for quite awhile. My faves were Booty Barre, Rockin' Models (incredible music!), and the first Physique 57 set of three. I really did not like the second P 57 workout. I agree with you on the butt getting sore from barre. I wish Cathe would do another.

I have never joined a gym, but I did go to a Jazzercise class for a couple years. Then the instructor left town.

Anything exciting for people this weekend??

I'd swear I posted earlier but it disappeared.

Lori, I have a pacemaker.... it's for a relatively minor electrical disturbance, but that is the only fix. I was on a bike ride a couple months after the procedure and wore a lightweight pack that fit snugly in the front of my shoulders. it compressed the vein where the wires run. caused a DVT. I think I was only anticoagulated for 3 months because there was an outside reason for the problem, it wasn't "spontaneous". it was WAY long enough. I'm very cautious with anything pressing on the front of my left shoulder since then. but I told them what my diet was like and they kept upping the dose but the coag times didn't increase as fast as they expected. it still worked out OK, that was at least 6 yrs ago. glad to be done and fortunate I didn't have any swelling problems.

Lynda we are hoping to take another try at a vacation but now that the garage door is fixed, the alarm system has a problem and not sure we can get anyone here today. I don't think we'll ever get to go anywhere.... it's not that major but takes a tech to program into the master board the new sensor.

I didn't like barre very much. I only tried the Cathe one a couple times and didn't like it much. Lori, I can't get anywhere near the positions they do. it feels kind of like the yoga positions my hips refuse to do. I can't do outward rotations well... but I can't sit that way either so not surprising.

Good morning,

Did not have a great night's sleep. Tossed and turned last night for some reason, glad today is not a work day.

Lori, I have only done a couple of barre workouts, but remember how they got you deep in the muscles...I could hardly walk the day after. I think about what you said, growing up around boys that fixed things etc. Neither my father nor John's were that type, in our families, they always called a friend or BIL, or someone that "knew that stuff" to come over and help, or called in a repairman. Hence, why I always just pick up the phone and get someone over to fix things. This last job, he was determined to do it himself. **eye roll here** and I was sure we were going to have a huge issue that he would start and we would end up with a plumber anyway. I was pleasantly surprised and he was thrilled that he did the job.

Garance, those Greek meat rolls sound delicious :) P-57 was the only barre workouts I did...I really need to try the Cathe ones. I didn't know about the 10% off code at TotalFitness....I wonder if it would have worked for my Beach Body stuff...probably not. Mary would have said something I'm sure.

Valerie, I keep forgetting that you have a pacemaker. It seems like something is telling you not to take this vacation: garage door, alarm system...etc. Maybe a good thing to postpone. How are your sister and Mom doing?

Hi to Josie and Judy,

Agility class, then I have to start making Keegan's food. Otherwise, not much else going on here this weekend. It's cold and dreary. A nice day to stay inside and read a book. :)

Good morning ladies!

Yesterday was ab interrvals. Wanted to do an upper body last night but ended up working late again. Ugh. So now I will feel the need to make up my workouts today. Burn sets bis and tris (I think), T25 cardio and a leg workout will be on the agenda. I am sure the weight workouts will be premixes as I do not have rime to do 3 hours of working out today!

Deb...I love doing home improvement projects. My mom was the same way so growing up it was just the way it was. Of all the things I have done I am most proud of our stone patio. This was a huge job and still can't believe I managed to do it during a 3 day weekend while DH was working. We enjoy it so much. My next indoor project is refinishing our cabinets and countertops in the wash room. I recently updated our bathroom and it came out beautiful. :)

Valerie...wow you were very lucky and scarey that a lightweight backpack could cause an issue like that. Who would have thought?

Lynda...I am on my computer at work all day long. I find typing on my Ipad refreshing! Never even turn on my laptop or desktop while at home. I just dust them off every now and then. Thanks on mentioning the other Barre workouts. Tracey Mallott looks pretty good. For some reason p57 does not interest me. Something about them doesn't grab me. I have never joined a gym either. Never had the need or desire.

I am on a hunt for lingucia this weekend. Hard to find in my area but plentiful where I grew up. For those not familiar with this it is a portugese sausage. Lynda you may have had it living in Massachusetts. My brother having the pancreas surgey would like me to send him some so he can make a big pot of kale soup and add in. Wants to do this before his surgery. How can I say no? He is getting very depressed and worried. No wonder where this has dragged on way to long. The unknowing is really getting to him.

Valerie...how is your friend with Pancreatic Cancer? Has she had surgery?

Have a great weekend all!

Lori,

Funny you mentioned lingucia, John just bought some the other day and we are trying to figure out what to do with it. The last (and first) time we had it was at a B&B in Provincetown. Let me know what ways you make it, (Kale soup would not go over here...John doesn't like Kale at all).

Deb!!!! Ha very funny. I am not a huge fan of kale but do like kale soup. I love lingucia on pizza. Either sliced like pepperoni or ground. You can buy lingucia pizza every where in New Bedford (my home city). It is also really good on the grill. We cut the links and butterfly before we grill. Then a little mustard on a portugese roll. Simple yet delish.

We are going to Utah! the alarm system guy got here mid afternoon. it wasn't hard to fix but needed a new sensor in the window. DH and I had the problem figured out but a failed sensor needed replacing. if it happens again we could possibly fix it ourselves but would need directions on programming it into the wall console. we'll see. we did not want to leave with the security system not working properly. but it's OK now.

I am a kale lover. think it's one of the best sources for vitamin K. I love it in soup ( potato & kale) , or lightly sautéed. I can't get on the current fervor for it raw in salads. a little mixed with other greens is fine, but the total "massaged kale" salad did not win any points here.

Lori, it was a very light little pack but it fit snug into the front armpit area, and I was leaned forward, arms forward, riding. I don't have much fat cushion in the area and it compressed the vein. It was a lesson learned. I designed a Velcro pad to use on all my other packs to lift the pack strap up and out from that area. on a bike, I use a waist pack or a rear carrier instead because the leaning forward position gets pack straps right where I am at risk.

Lori that is so cool that you do stuff like that! I'm a lot better than I was young. no one in my family fixed much and we were never allowed to try. DH and I take on projects together... we've built things and fixed many things. we seem to work best together. neither of us does as well alone for different reasons. our strengths and weaknesses sort of balance each other out. he's better with engines but I have learned a lot too. we build a large outdoor shed together from scratch not a prefab thing and it turned out great.

My friend with pancreatic cancer is scheduled for april 9th. I can't believe it is taking this long. she had to have a stent inserted to direct flow of bile fluid and it wasn't placed right so needed to be repeated at least one more time. she has been in and out of the hospital related to this but apparently the wait list was pretty long and she needed to stay in her insurance network. Hope your brother has some progress in his situation. I would think the waiting and not knowing would be horrendous. my friend has been pretty sick most of the time with awful non stop itching related to the bile fluids.

Deb, I wish I had not needed the pacer but it turned out fine. it sure beat fainting unexpectedly. the biggest risk is injuries from falls, the condition itself is not high risk. it doesn't limit my activities as much as worrying about fainting did!
sunday am, all systems are a go. back in a week or so.
