Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 3/23

Deb, I never thought about the approximate numbers that way either but it's so obvious when you think about it. you may know how many people are in your house at the moment, but your neighbors? and if your house is destroyed, would your neighbors know who was at yours at the time? a car driving down the road...a driver, but anyone else? what if you or they had a friend or a contractor or a delivery person there, or kids had friends over? multiply that by 40 or so homes with full time residences, others "summer cabins". when someone is reported "missing" they take down general descriptions coming from all over, and slowly eliminate duplicates.

there is more coming out about the logging activity on the plateau above, what DNR allowed and when. and also reports on the stability of the slope, there and the rest of the county. I had nightmares last night.. I need to stop focusing on this disaster.

I talked to my doc yesterday. chilblains or pernio is one possible explanation. I need to be more careful about keeping hands warm and dry... actually more in the kitchen! outdoors (like riding) I have good gloves, same with hiking &skiing. in the kitchen and in the garden I need to minimize getting cold and wet and staying that way too long. will never know for sure. I have very dry skin and the combination made me vulnerable to infection. it has cleared up nicely, no antibiotics, hopefully this is done with.

Lynda 20 lbs! wow. I am getting close.. 15's with weighted gloves and doing all reps plus a few in the TF set. I think I could do 20's, but might wear me out for the rest of the exercises. crazy 8's, I use 12's. those are easier for me. triceps I go heavier. strangely, my left arm is stronger than my right and I'm right handed.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Jazzercise Hiit (47 min.).

Deb, I really was in a fog when I picked up those 20s. I usually do 15s. So far all we are getting here is a lot of wind, but they showed the Cape and Chatham MA on MSNBC this morning, and it looked terrible.

Valerie, my husband does not take care of his hands at all, but he is a farmer and expects to have calluses and cracked cuticles and very dry hands from all the work he does. He did get these gloves, though, where you can flip back the fingers if you need to do something with more flexibility. You should probably stop reading and listening about that mudslide if it's giving you nightmares. Suffocation by mud just sounds like a terrible way to die.

I have some kind of a toothache. Hope it's not a root canal. Seeing the dentist tomorrow. Ugh!

Good afternoon ladies!

Yesterday morning was T25 Total Circuit and last night was xtrain chest and back. Never did weights Monday night.

Slept in again this morning and today is a no workout day. I am helping with our Company's monthly homeless shelter this afternoon/evening so with all the running around serving this will be a workout for me.

Valerie...this midslide is horrible. Those poor people. I saw on the news today a 4 year old boy being pulled and alive but his dad and sisters are missing. So so sad.

Lynda...great job with the 20's. That is awesome. No snow here either but the wind is unbelievable. My brother lives down the Cape and I'll be calling him soon to check on him. They are getting hit hard. Did you get to tour Fenway?

Deb..so easy to eat too much when you are socializing. Today is another day! When do the new KCM ship? I like the burn sets a lot. And yes she certainly can fry your muscles!

Hi to Judy and Josie!

Hi Ladies,

I'm on jury duty:(. I went to my body pump class yesterday and today was supposed to be spinning, but will probably not make it.

Have a nice evening everyone!

Josie

Lynda, I have a pair of mittens that have short finger separations, and then a mitten- like flap that can be flipped open for free fingers or flapped over for warmth. they work just OK. Ok for xc skiing. My hands look like I work harder than I do. knuckles are getting larger and very red and irritated looking. DH thinks it's the lotion and sanitizer I use. I try to use sanitizer only when I've been out in public and can't wash. will need to work on keeping them clean and dry, I don't want to go through this again. warmer weather will help too. when you look up pernio it is more common in moderate, damper climates than it is in really cold dry areas.. apparently we're too dumb here to realize we need gloves!

hope that's not a root canal coming up.

we just got back from a mountain bike for almost 2 hours. a "tree farm" only a few minutes away. last time we tried was very muddy and sloppy but this time the roads were more graveled and it was fun. it goes up to a statue with a lovely view but today it just showed the approaching rain storm. uphill one way, then downhill almost all the way back. I have some very nice pearl izumi winter gloves... not thick and clumsy but still warm. I carry some heavier ones as backup. we ride pretty hard so it's more about wind block than anything.

Josie, I have somehow avoided jury duty. I am never called. I have no idea why, but I'm afraid if I start asking, I'll get called in. I got a summons once but it's more than 35 years ago. I couldn't serve at that time but never got another summons. I have a common name, so maybe I fell through the cracks somehow. DH is already listed for next Dec.

Good morning,

Today I did All Out HIIT ( Floor Cardio + Core 1 premix).

Valerie, it sounds like you are narrowing down the cause and what to do about your finger issue, glad that is it cleared up. I still can't believe what has happened with that slide...so scary and sad.

Garance, hope you don't need a root canal! Not fun.

Lori, KCM has clips on her site....she has a link to send you over to YouTube....I really like the one where you use a piece of cardio equipment. The other one looks good too. Can't wait to get them. She is really quick, she filmed both on March 8th and has clips up on March 26th. No dallying around with her. Of course she doesn't have the production of Cathe, but still does a great job with premixes etc. I like that there are 2 workouts on each DVD of the same type.

Josie, ouch...jury duty...I feel for you...but you are doing your civic duty...funny how some people get called a lot and others have never gone.

Hi Judy!

Work will be interviews all day...:(

Take care,

Deb ... good video. I don't do tuck jumps... knees are still "good"..... let's keep them that way! never thought of using a chair. the other moves I don't modify. they're hard but I don't think the impact is significant unless you have a wrist or shoulder issue.

I'm guilty of getting into cold water and not drying my hands when I'm cooking, washing vegies, cleaning counters etc. we have a family trait of big knuckles as we age. my grandmother and mother had them and claimed it was from doing cold wet work. I think it's more likely genetic. not a functional problem, just ugly. hands looking pretty decent now.

the slide business goes on and on. pretty soon it's going to get into the blame game of who didn't do what fast enough. I think county officials didn't realize how big this was at first and should have called in the national guard immediately but waited for a couple days. I

have no clue how people's names get on the jury call list. I would think registered voters? even my train wreck sister was called recently although she didn't do it.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Burn Sets ch, ba, sh (51:43).

Well the dentist couldn't see anything wrong by x-ray, but there is a sore on my gum, so he gave me some kind of root desensitization cream and I will see him next week for a follow-up. It is only intermittently achy.

I once spent 3 weeks on a jury in a civil suit involving land. It was really tedious. The third week we were paid 50 dollars a day. I've been called to jury duty at least 5 times, but only this once was I seated on the panel. DH just did his civic duty for 2 days on a case that was really funny. A guy turns himself in for DUI, but later says that he was just trying to avoid getting beaten up by his wife. The police screwed up on this one so that even though it was pretty clear that both he and his wife were definitely drunk, no breathalyzer was taken, the wife can't testify against her husband, so he gets off.

Deb, I don't do tuck jumps either, and I don't mind the mountain climbers or burpees with the disks to eliminate impact. I just don't like burpees period.

Gosh, I made a great egg dish last night--eggs Florentine from the Broccoli Forest vegetarian cookbook. We have such good eggs right now and people just keep giving them to DH, and I'm tired of omelets. I guess as the light gets longer the hens just lay more eggs. These are all from free range chickens with these gorgeous deep yellow-orange yolks.

Lori, that is so wonderful what your company does for the homeless shelter.

ttfn

Good evening ladies,

This morning was T25 Ab intervals. Worked late tonight so that was it for a workout.

The shelter was so rewarding. The people that come are really down on their luck and so appreciative of a nice hot free meal. Lynda I love that our company does this every month also.

Deb...well you are an enabler by letting me know KCM had clips up. I ended up buying the weight one - $13.99 and free shipping. Felt this was a decent deal. I did not care for the one with the cardio machines. I could not see myself doing this one. Thanks for the clip on the modifications. I do modify burpees and mountin climbers a little. I use a 4 inch bench to make it easier on my wrist. Without it my wrists ache a bit after a workout.

I was supposed to have jury duty on March 18 but received a letter a week prior saying I was not needed at this time. It continued to say I would be put back into the pool so I may be called again in the near future. Thought it was odd that they knew a week before I would not be needed.

I am off tomorrow and Monday. Want to get going on Spring Cleaning...not that it feels like Spring at all here in New England!

Have a great night all!

Hi Everyone,

Deb-that was really weird about Collage. They let me pay, sent an email saying they would be shipping my order soon then a few days later I get an email saying they are processing a refund for my order.
I did end up getting Lean Legs & Abs, Flex Train, and a KCM dvd from Amazon. I am completely ignoring my plan to not buy any new workout DVDs but that's ok for now. It's been a rough few months around here and I need all the workouts I can get.

I really like the Jessica Smith youtube link. The modifications are good. I can do tuck jumps but I really feel it afterwards and I am not sure how good they are for me.

Lynda-I don't think I can do bicep curls with 20 lbs yet, that is great!
I hope your tooth is better.
The egg dish sounds good! I love eggs.

Valerie-great job on all the workouts and bike rides you are doing.
I've never had jury duty either. DH went last year, only for 1 day.

Lori-it's nice that your company helps with a homeless shelter. I'm sure that is a workout too. Lots of work involved.

Hi to Josie,

Judy

Good morning and Happy Friday!

I did a Walk Fit workout this morning. I like Candace Grasso a lot. I wish she would make more treadmill workouts.

Valerie, do you use gloves when doing cleaning or dishes? I try to, but it's a pain to keep taking them off and on so I don't use them as much as I would like to. Yes, jury duty is from voter registration.

Garance, good thing that your issue did not result in any surgery or referral to a specialist. I still have my trip to the country planned to start getting better eggs and meat.

Lori, it's great that your company does that. It has to make you and your co-workers feel that you are giving back. You may find KCM a little "tame" compared to SeanT and others, but I like her style and you can always make her workouts as hard as you want by upping the weight. Also nice that she doesn't use a ton of equipment.

Judy, you deserve to get those workouts! I think you will like FlexTrain...I have not heard of anyone that doesn't. Which KCM did you get?

Hi Josie!

Work, then agility class tonight.

Anyone have any exciting plans for the weekend?

Stay warm!

Good morning ladies!

Up early and playing on my Ipad. :). So nice to not have to work today.

Deb...the couple of workouts that I have done of KCM I have really liked and feel I get a great work out. I lover her personallity and style. Yes her workouts can be less impact but she is pretty tough at times. Looking forward to her new weight one. I agree that with her workouts you can make them as easy or tough as you want.

Judy...great dvd purchases. You will like Flex Train. LL&A is good too but I do not do it enough.

Lynda...glad no root canal! I have had a couple, no fun.

Have a great day all!

Good Morning,

I got an early start today, since DH had to leave before 7 this morning. I'm getting caught up on things at home, cooking and laundry. I will be getting a workout in also, probably cycling and core work.

Deb-I bought KCM's "Muscle Definition" workout. I think I'm going to like this one. She has some nice premixes, just like Cathe does. I also pre-ordered the 2 new KCMs, not sure when to expect them.

I ordered a new foam roller,

Amazon.com: Rumble Roller Full Size Black: Sports & Outdoors

Since I got such good results with my basic roller I decided to try a better one. I can't believe the difference in how my hamstrings and hip flexors feel after using the roller and doing Cathe's Stretch Max a few times. Actually as good if not better than getting a deep tissue massage.

Lori-I have today off too. Nice to be able to get some things done and have more time to workout.
I ended up not getting the P90x or Insanity workouts for DH. He just doesn't want to workout at home so I'm encouraging him to go back to Fitness 19 more often. Once the weather gets nicer he will start running and biking outside again too.

Lynda-Root canals are no fun, glad you don't need one.

Hi to Valerie and Josie!

Judy

Deb, I'm a "dishwasher" kind of gal. everything but cooking pots go in the DW. I don't use many things that can't go thru the DW. I also use a long handled kitchen brush. I bought kitchen gloves that I'm going to try to wear some of the time. I use a salad spinner to wash most vegies... drop them into the water, swish around, lift the basket out. so I've been trying and already had modified to minimize impact!
there were possibly elements of contact dermatitis so I switched lotions and bought a big jug of coconut oil. it's solid at room temp and can be used in cooking but also can be used on skin. no additives there at all. It smells lovely too, faintly like an oatmeal cookie.

strange that I'm never been called.... not to sound like I'm complaining. we do all mail voting here and I have before it was official, for 30 years. never miss getting a ballot.

Did my yoga class both days this week, later did 20 on the elliptical, burnsets ch,ba,sh, and core 1.

Judy thanks for the link, I never knew what foam rollers were. too bad your DH doesn't like indoor exercise. I hate the deteriorating feeling I used to get during off season, but even more I hated the painful process of getting back in shape every spring.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did All Out Low Impact Hiit + core 1 (49:22).

Judy, what exactly are foam rollers for--some type of stretching? I think you will like both of those Cathes. I did LLA this week and I am still surprised at how my legs start to hurt from using a little pink band.

Deb, we will probably go out to dinner on Sunday like we almost always do. There really are no movies out now that I am longing to see. The local theater is showing The Wind Rises, which is Japanese anime. After seeing all those comicon characters from anime, I have no interest whatsoever.

My toothache seems to have subsided. Weird, but I am pleased.

Anyone watching March madness?

Hi Ladies,

Jury duty was boring, but it did not last long. I get called at least every other year and so has my DH and my DD went in January. I went to body pump yesterday and today was spinning.

Tomorrow I plan on spinning and doing a body pump class back to back and on Sunday I will be doing a 50 mile ride from Manhattan beach to San Pedro. This one should be a nice ride :)

Judy, you deserve some treats after the last two months. Enjoy your new DVD's. foam rollers are to painful for me. I have the stitch and massage any tense nerves.

Garance, you probably had something stuck under the gum that caused some pain. That has happened to me.

Hi to Lori and Deb!

Josie

Happy Saturday!

Nothing too exciting this weekend....agility class this morning, nail appointment this afternoon, and lots of HouseMax.

Lori, did you go over and view the clips of the new KCM's?

Judy, thanks for the link for the roller...I never saw one of these but have seen a lot of posts about them. Some like them a lot, others not so much. It's great that with stretching etc it helps you.

Valerie, I do the same thing...I put most stuff in the dishwasher, but with just the 2 of us, it takes a long time to fill. I also use one of those brushes as much as I can to keep my hands out of water.

Garance, no March Madness here....Buffalo hosted some type of March Madness thing..about 10,000 tourists descended on the city last weekend...I heard it was a great time, except some parking lots ripped people off, because they could.

Josie, sounds like a great ride!

Agility class this morning, a nail appointment this afternoon and lots of HouseMax for me. John has a Trout Unlimited banquet tonight, so I am on my own for dinner etc. maybe ravioli...mmmmm...

take care,

Good morning ladies!

Yesterday I needed to catch up with my workouts so having the day off allowed me to do T25 Ab Intervals then T25 Lower Body then topped off with xtrains bis and tris. I was spent after this.

DS came to visit with girlfriend and we ended up getting pizza and I quickly ate 3 large slices. Glad I had that morning workout.

No plans for the weekend other than DH and I plan to finally watch Frozen on Sunday.

Deb...I loved watching the clips. I like when you can get a peek to help you decide. One of the reasons I loved Collage. Everything was together. I started going over to totalfitness.com. And this site has been a great substitute. Have fun with housemax, I'll be doing the same!

Judy...thanks for the link on the foam roller. I do not have one but have been on the fence. A friend of mine loves using his. Let us know how you like this new one.

Valerie...My dishwasher just died last week and really do not miss it at all. Like you Deb it is just me and DH and it seems to be quicker to just do them by hand. All our kitchen appliances were bought 15 years ago so everything seems to be going at the same time...first the fridge now the dishwasher. We do plan on replacing just need to find the time to go and do it.

Josie...that does sound like a beautiful ride! Oh to live in CA. Only in my dreams!

Lynda...enjoy your dinner...glad your tooth is good. Funny how pains just come and go.

Have a great weekend ladies!

I refuse to cook without a DW. I HATE washing dishes.. possibly related to how irritated and dry my skin gets. DH washes dishes in our camper. I cook, he cleans up. but at home... I cook a lot... I run the DW almost daily.

Lori, my last DW purchase is a Bosch. It had a problem at first & didn't heat the water, but it was a warranty repair. it is wonderful & so quiet! it cleans the dishes well. It has an easily accessible filter system I rinse off weekly so none of the problems with crud on my dishes like I had with the Kitchen Aid that didn't ever work. If I have to wash the dishes before putting them in the DW, what do I have a DW for? This is a mid level priced Bosch, not top of the line.

I've heard about foam rollers for years but never looked at one before. not sure I'd like it but I know many people love them.

Josie sounds like a lovely ride... enjoy. we are having a record month for rain quantity... so wet! wish I were in CA.
the awful mudslide business is nowhere near over with. having to contend with all this rain is not helping anything.

we are thinking we will head for Utah in a week and skip CA. finally seems like all health problems are settled down. I think part of my problem was contact dermatitis. I stopped using all the regular lotions I'd used and switched to pure coconut oil. You can cook with it, but it makes a lovely moisturizer and has no additives. I don't know what I'm sensitive to... so it seemed like a good choice to try. I now smell very faintly like an oatmeal cookie! my hands are less irritated looking in only 2 days. it is solid at room temp so not as handy as a regular lotion.
