Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 3/11

Hi,

today I did the single set pre-mix of STS Total Body. I like this workout, not sure if I could handle the whole thing right now, but feel "worked out" with just this pre-mix. the sun is shining brightly here, and it's supposed to get into the 50's.

What is everyone up to today?

Hi Deb and any later posters--

This morning I did Turbo Barre (74 min.).

Beautiful here, too, Deb, and it sounds like the whole week will be spring-like. I hope next week is also spring-like, so I can clean up my gardens in anticipation of spring.

I finally watched 50-50 last night. I liked it, but thought the medical profession looked pretty bad, especially the doctor who first tells him he has cancer.

Gosh, I don't know about you, Deb, but I had a hard time getting up this morning. I really miss that hour of sleep.

More Freud this afternoon.

Still not feeling decent. have a cough at night with congestion. it clears in the morning because of the meds I'm taking but they make me feel crummy in a different way. this is the longest stretch I've gone without working out that I can remember. definitely not feeling well enough to try.

having guests for lunch today so had to get up and get moving. made an apple pie, and will make turkey burgers with peanut sauce. we will miss this couple, he's in the service and they are moving to Florida in about a week. they have been fun. she's very pregnant right now. she worked with DH until thursday, her last day.

yes, the bedside manner was appalling in the one doc. but so many times it gets so extreme the other direction ( especially when hollywood gets a hold of it) so we enjoyed seeing it like it really is sometimes. not everyone is mr. congeniality. we both enjoyed it.

Good morning,

I just finished a 35 minute Cardio Coach on the treadmill, felt great. Now tomorrow is a rest day, because of the late class tonight, hopefully that does not slow down my momemtum to keep at the workouts.

Garance, yes, I miss that hour too. I wish they would just "chuck" this whole daylight savings time thing. It was a beautiful day here, but I spent most of it making spelt bread, and doing HouseMax.

Valerie, nothing like feeling awful and having company. Don't worry about the workouts, your body is telling you that you need to rest.

Nothing else new around here, just the same old Monday blah's...another lovely work week to look forward to.

Take care,

Yes, my body is telling me to lie low. I'm still hacking up crud.. feeling a little better. going to take a short course of antibiotics just to be sure. I haven't taken any in YEARS. our guests were fun. they are quite a bit younger, really just starting out. She was just out of residency so DH was able to mentor her for the last 1.5 years and we all became good friends. this was the couple we took up hiking and up on the snow where DH and I got to prove we might be older, but we're still tough. It's been so good to get to know them. I hope we can keep in touch but sometimes those things don't hold up over time. they will be busy with their first child and her parents ( from romania) are coming to visit for a month soon.

Strong work Deb on getting the workout in. I have the luxury of just sleeping later. I could go either way with DST. I'd rather just stay on one system rather than switching back and forth, especially when the whole country doesn't switch!

Linda, be careful even if you're feeling good now. this came back to bite me in a week after a very strenuous day so apparently ( if we have the same thing) it's a very resiliant virus. it feels exactly the same.

Watched 'the Debt" last night and enjoyed it very much. recommend.

Hi Deb, Josie, and Valerie--

This morning I did After Burn (54 min.).

Good for you, Deb, on getting a workout in. I am still feeling groggy, but a good workout really wakes me up.

Valerie, so sorry you are feeling lousy. I have heard that flu season is really late this year, so maybe you have a touch of that? Sometimes flu shots don't do the job. I will look up the Debt. I don't even know what that film is. I am really looking forward to the Hunger Games, because I read that series and loved it.

Did you get all that biking in this weekend, Josie?

Gorgeous here today--already 60 degrees.

Good morning all,

I took a planned rest day today, since Monday night class ends very late. We had fun in class though. Kylee is getting better all the time, and Keegan just rocks along.

Valerie, we were in an airport in Arizona one time coming back from California and we thought we had missed the flight because they did not do the DST thing, so it was actually an hour earlier than we thought.

Garance, the temp is 57 right now, and going up today. It is a little rainy but can't complain!

Take care,

Hi Deb, Josie, and Valerie--

This morning I did Slide and Glide (52 min.).

I agree, Deb, this weather is incredible. It's going up to 70 again today. A little cloudier than yesterday, and we did get some rain over night, but this is really a treat.

We are going to the Science Museum this time when we go to Boston. They have a lot of interesting exhibits. One would probably intrigue you, Valerie. It's a virtual tour of Acadia National Forest and they show all of the birds in the eastern U.S. as part of it. They also have a butterfly garden and a honeybee hive. Last year we did the Freedom Trail, which was really fun, but everything will probably be crazy in the streets because of St. Patrick's Day.

Last week on Plath, and when we get back from break, it's Hughes, not my favorite kind of guy.

I'm finally getting better. not good, but better. bad cough. the whole business settled in my throat and I was awake coughing for hours. cough syrup helps but it wears off in a few hours and then there's the waiting period until another dose kicks in.

DH did the cyclemax killer routine... think it's 87 min? and rode the whole thing. he's really gone nuts on the spin bike, just loves it. after he got done, we took the cleats off and put regular pedals on. I'll try it that way. I can switch back and forth. takes a wrench but pretty simple. I'm optimistic since I road bike and mt bike in reg shoes with no problem. the problems started when I bought the cycling shoes.

I KNOW stiff soles give better transfer of power with each pedal stroke. I get sore/blisters in 30 min, so no advantage. When I wear cycle shoes, it feels like my toes are being pushed upward constantly. I looked at other spin DVD's. some mix spinning with floor exercises. NO WAY does anyone do floor exercises with bike shoes. so obviously, not everyone uses stiff shoes.

Linda, I wouldn't go to the museum, I'd go to the forest!

I'm pretty ignorant of literature, just struggled thru the required courses freshman yr. I do remember reading The Bell Jar and not liking it. I remember a lot of time with melville and Moby dick. Arrgh. hated it. Hughes doesn't ring a bell, what did he write?

Hi Ladies,

We had to put Astro down on Friday he almost made it to 13, so it was very sad weekend for us. The ride was beautiful and very hilly and very well organized. We rode through Carlsbad, Solana Beach, and the Elfin Forest. The weather was in the 50’s so it was a very comfortable ride.

The best part of my weekend was seeing my son and my new grandson. He is just adorable, but I could not kiss him and hold him as much as I would have liked to because I ended up getting a cold. So, I owe him a million kisses

I also watched the movie 50/50 yesterday and enjoyed it very much.

I guess we all had a bit of a cold this season so far 

I will be back later.

Josie

Josie, so sorry about Astro. that's so hard to deal with but really, we're kinder to animals than we are to people when it gets to the last days. It's alway amazed me we make each other suffer with no hopes of recovery, for no reason. not doing him any favors letting him struggle thru another week. I've dreaded it with every pet but there's no other thing to do. still, doesn't make it easy.

I'm getting better. amazing... I've barely eaten at all but no exercise and my jeans are tighter. bummer. I might start something light tomorrow if I sleep decently tonight. still coughing.

and then the power went out. kind of breezy and all of a sudden wham, everything shut down. supposed to rain tomorrow and too soon for me to try doing anything anyway. I would really REALLY like to see some spring weather.

Just finished the express cardio, abs and stretch from Slide & Glide. whew, different, I had some trouble with the burpees, but just did half the number that Cathe did so that I would at least be doing something. I like the ab/core work on this one.

Josie, so sorry about Astro. It is so hard, but you know when it's time and that you have to do this for them.

Valerie, strange about your jeans being tighter, maybe retaining fluids for some reason? the meds?

Garance, when is the Boston trip?

Off for more coffee, and to shower etc...

take care,

Deb, I gain weight if I don't exercise unless I eat absolutely nothing. also, the "muscle tone" seems to relax quickly and the same pounds take up more space. enough to make jeans feel tighter anyway.

got a decent nights sleep. DH wrote me a rx for some heavier duty cough syrup. I took a teaspoon of it, but even without it my throat improved very quickly. I was hoping the symptoms didn't move somewhere else, like up to my nose/sinuses, but I feel pretty decent this morning. I'm hoping DH doesn't get this. I sleep in the guest room when I'm sick so that reduces chances of transmission.

I did some shopping yesterday that was all. I was pretty tired after. I'm not sure about today. we might do some yard work if it's not raining. that's enough to get moving again without over doing it. I'd like to try the bike with the new pedal system just to see if it's better. I think I'll know quickly. tomorrow yoga and a light workout. should be Ok after that.

Hi Deb, Josie, and Valerie--

This morning I did High Reps (65 min.).

Deb, I don't do all of the burpees either. I substitute on the second round with the skating move between all of those jacks. The cardio on S & G is a very solid 25 min. I get my heartrate up on this one easily and am glad when it's over and we move on to the conditioning. I love the stretches at the end with the disks. We are headed to Boston on Friday, just for the weekend.

Josie, sorry about Astro. Do you think you will get another dog? We didn't get one for two years after our last one died, and had to think long and hard about it when we finally did. It's just difficult when you know their lives are comparatively short. I am currently debating whether to get a second dog after I retire, since Max is primarily DH's farm companion, while I am Mother Treatsa and frisbee companion--a comparatively minor figure in Max's imagination.

Gorgeous weather here.

Exhausted this morning. Got up at 4:00 with Kylee and was all set to do a weight workout, but could not get myself downstairs to do it.. ended up going back upstairs and back to sleep until 5:30. Now just sitting with coffee trying to wake up. I can connect this to the food I ate, now I know what does this to me. When I am sticking to my eating plan, I can get up, workout and not feel groggy.

Valerie, still on the mend?

Garance, definitely wait until you retire to get another dog. I love Kylee but she has been a challenge, that's for sure. It would be easier if I was home all day. If you do get one, what breed or type would it be?

Off for more caffine, I have to get some energy to move.

Take care,

Did some stuff yesterday outside. not too wet in the morning so we got a load of compost for the garden beds. I did plenty of shoveling, raking. It's heavy dirty work and I got tired pretty quickly. only about 40 degrees out and wet. a truckload is just over a ton so it's way more work than a 10 lb bag of chick manure. we were heading back for another load after lunch when it started raining in earnest so we chucked the idea and I got some baking done for our upcoming vacation. we are looking at the long range forecast and not much looks good weather-wise.
DH is such a "methodical planner" and I'm more of a seat-of- the- pants kind of person. he wants everything planned out... menu plans, campgrounds planned, hikes and rides planned, and I want to decide 2 days ahead what to do and go where it looks best..

I'm better, still coughing up junk but slept well again. I'm going to yoga and will do some "heavy breathing" cardio today. I did not feel well enough yesterday. still congestion in my lower throat area and do not want to get the coughing started. I'm so tired of cough syrup.

Watched Ides of March last night. Really enjoyed it. excellent cast. seemed unfortunately realistic. people at all levels behave just like you expect but somehow we keep expecting a higher level, and it's such a disappointment when it doesn't exist. I enjoyed it a lot.

Hi Deb, Josie, and Valerie--

This morning I did Cardio Supersets (41 min.).

Two classes today, and then two weeks of spring break. Yippee! Of course, I have two sets of papers to grade, but I don't mind so much with no classes to prepare. Deb, I really don't know what kind of dog I should get. I'm very fond of miniature schnauzers, but the grooming thing seems crazy. I also wonder if I wouldn't feel better if I decided to adopt a rescue dog. My vet friend always does this. I sent for some of that Face lift yourth serum after reading the reviews at Amazon. We will have to compare notes on its efficacy.

So, tomorrow night we will be having dinner at Bistro du Midi looking out over Boston Garden. It serves Provencal French food (from Menton to Marseille). The menu looks great. I'm sure we will have pizza on Saturday in the Italian north end, and then we're visiting with sil and her family. Probably corned beef since it's St. Patty's day.

I will probably get a workout in before we leave tomorrow--most likely AT--but I won't be checking in until Monday.

Enjoy the weekend!

Good Morning Ladies,

I have not worked out at all this week. I’m trying to get rid of this cold and I also have a cough. I might be able spin this weekend. It is supposed to rain all weekend so not outside ride.

Garance, we will not be getting another dog anytime soon. My DD wants one, but her dad said that she can get one once she gets her own place. Have a great weekend in Boston!

Deb, thank you so much for your e-mail. It is so true.

Valerie, I guess you and I had the same cold ;(

Hi to Cathy and Joan!

Josie

I went to yoga this morning and it was fine. still can get a cough going pretty easily so I think I'll stick to the spin bike today. I never had a cold like this before. It totally skipped my head and sinuses, where it usually settles, and stuck to a couple inches in my throat. breathing hard( like exercise) just wasn't possible. yesterday's foray in the mud didn't make anything worse so I feel like I'm done with 99% of it. Josie, you should probably expect about a week of this. I talked to a lot of people with the same thing. breathing in a lot of cold air seems to make things worse.

Linda, I've gotten 3 rescue cats. It's a good feeling to take in an unwanted animal and not contribute to breeders generating "more" when there are too many already. I'm not a fan of breeds that need excessive grooming and trimming upkeep. our previous dog was a dobie and so didn't need anything. I feel bad about the tail and nose docking but I got an adult dog who turned out great. so many unwanted pets out there... if you look for personality it's still hard to pick just one. even purebreds are pretty available especially if they' more than a year old, and honestly, I didn't mind missing puppy phase.

Wow, sounds like a food-focused weekend. Enjoy. I'll wait to hear your reviews of the Face lift serum. I'm always alert to anything new that works. I have rosacea ( completely invisible and controlled) and can't use any of the formulas that cause faster skin surface turnover.
