Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 2/23

Good morning,

Today I did KCM's Split Sessions, Lower Body. Short but a tough one.

It's another winter blast here....high today is 15, and we are at 14 now so this is it. Ugh.

Garance, when you mentioned Core 1...is that the core work from All Out Low Impact Hiit? When I was doing the x-train workouts, I mostly did the premixes that didn't have the core sections. Why is it that you stay away from the exercises that you need most? Is it that they are the hardest for you? That would be my core and triceps. I also agree that the letter plot on DA was dumb. The part I liked was the part with Mr. Bates. He is one of my favorite characters.

Valerie, the DA stuff above will not mean anything to you until you watch it...no spoilers there!

Judy, still can't believe the news about Echo....poor kitty...and feel for you and DH..:(

Lori, nice job with the workouts! I still can't imagine doing 2 workouts in a day, and working in between...

Hi to Josie,

Work, then home, not much going on here...can't wait for the weekend of course!

Stay warm.

Judy I am so sorry to hear about Echo. I was not familiar with the disease but looked it up and it's so sad. does not sound like there is much to be done. I hope you will be able to keep your other kitty protected. what awful luck ... but the risk of things like this go up when you reach out to less fortunate kitties and try to give them a chance at a good life. we have had one stray and 2 shelter kitties so far. you just can't tell what awful conditions the kitty endured before you adopted her.

Deb, so funny.. I like core workouts and triceps too. I get tired of crunches. core 1 has sit ups which had disappeared for the longest time. I don't remember why they fell out of favor, but they always seemed more effective to me than crunches. I was happy to see them back... off to yoga

Hi Ladies,

Went to body pump on Tuesday and today. I was on my way to spinning class yesterday but got caught in traffic and did not make it so instead I went and got my hair cut :).

Judy, I'm so sorry to hear about Echo. She was lucky to be adopted by you and DH and loved by the both of you.

Deb, looks like you are back on the workout wagon :).

Lori, you are doing great on your rotation. This week is my 8th week of seriously working out towards my ALC ride goal and I can definitely see improvement on my body composition and when I ride. It is paying off!

Garance, I finally watched DBC. I liked it very much, thank you for the review.

Hi to Valerie!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did All Out Low Impact HIIT + Core 1 (49:22).

Deb, yes, Core 1 is in the premixes for All Out. I try to do a couple core workouts every week. This week it's 3 times--LLA, then this one, and tomorrow Flextrain. I don't like the endless triceps dips Cathe does with one leg in the air on Flextrain and I cheat with my knee down on those planks with the triceps kickbacks. Too much pressure on my wrists and my form is lousy when I try to do a kickback with a plank. I notice that a couple of the background exercisers look more like they have their butts up in the air on those planks, making it less difficult I suppose.

Judy, that is so sad about Echo. Will you try to get another kitten soon? I have never heard of this disease either. I will try to look it up. At least for the short time Echo has had, she has been loved.

Lori, I too marvel at the double workout schedule. What does Ruthless involve? Are you ready for another Arctic blast? I have a friend in Minneapolis who is going crazy with how cold it's been there. Over 50 days of sub-zero temps there. Her dogs just hate it. So far Max doesn't seem to be affected, but he has a very thick winter coat.

Valerie, when will you be able to watch DA? Didn't you say something about a documentary about backup singers? I think that is now available at Amazon and I might try watching it since it's also Oscar nominated.

Josie, I read somewhere that DBC was filmed in 29 days. Amazing!

Lynda, it's called "20 feet from stardom". I enjoyed it a lot, maybe because I grew up with that music, whereas DH was a Californian and they listened to different music. ( Da- do- run- run) there is a sequence in there where one lady is singing with the Stones at a club that is wonderful... heard the song so many times and never wondered who was the female voice that "makes" the song work. prepare to get some musical hooks caught in your brain for a few days.
I also have a friend in MSP who has had enough winter too. she's had some breaks because her mother is in FL in poor health so she's needed to fly down there for a couple weeks. my family in Milwaukee is also burned out on snow and freezing temps.

I think DA is available on Netflix ... a reminder to look at my queue... (ETA there's a very long wait on DA disk one so will be a while) we've been watching '6 feet under" and have several more seasons to go and will likely finish it before moving on. DH didn't like 6 feet at first (watched a few episodes years ago) because it has some fairly graphic gay male encounters but we tried it again and there's so much more to the characters that it didn't seem as "central" the second time.

I've gotten to like the planks with kickbacks and find them a lot easier than the first couple times. I do a higher plank for the move like the "crew" does. I'm not crazy about the 'crazy dips". I like doing dips on a bench or using dumbbells. I don't like dips with flat down palms so I want my knuckles off the ground so they don't get banged on.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your comments about Echo. She seems stable right now but very lethargic. If you didn't know she was only a kitten you would think she was a senior cat :( Very sad to watch. I am still kind of in shock, I don't think it has hit me completely yet. I am having a hard time focusing on anything, including workouts. Yesterday I didn't do anything. Today I managed a 45 minute Spinerval.
I don't think we will get a small kitten again. We will probably look for a young adult as a companion for Chino. I feel bad for him too. He will be lonely and confused for awhile. They were very close.

The posts about Core 1 and XTrain are making me want to do an XTrain rotation again. I was doing those workouts quite a lot last summer but got away from them when I started doing Muscle Max and Muscle Endurance. I am starting to get a little burned out on MM and ME so maybe XTrain is just what I need.

We are having another Arctic blast this week and it looks like into next week. Hard to believe it's going to be March.

Good evening ladies!

I love my double workouts. Keep in mind though my morning ones are short and to the point. I try and keep them no more than 30 minutes. Ruthless is all body weight and pretty much drill oriented. I like them and they get the job done.

Judy...my heart breaks for you. So sad about Echo. Still a little kitty too. Did this just come on all of a sudden? Poor little kitty.

Lynda....too funny about cheating with flextrain....i do the same as you with the tricep dips and the plank kick backs. I always modify if I need to and have no problem doing so. I am done with this winter. More snow coming early next week. Ugh.

Josie...good for you with your rides! You are doing well too. Funny about getting a haircut. Never waisting time!

Hi to Valerie and Deb!!!!!

Thank you Lori, it is heartbreaking. She used to follow me all over. If I would get up in the middle of the night she would get up and follow me. She was growing up to be such a good girl. I feel so helpless. DH feels horrible too. I don't want her to suffer, but I don't want to give up on her too soon either. It's a horrible situation to be in when you have to make that decision.

The neurological symptoms came on pretty suddenly but I had been concerned about her not putting on weight for some time. We went to the vet last month because of that and the vet didn't find anything wrong during a basic exam.

Happy Friday!!

Got up and did Walk Fit treadmill workout this morning. I wish she would make some new ones, I like her a lot.

It's a balmy -1 degrees here right now...yahoo.

Valerie, you must have read my post incorrectly, core and triceps are the 2 parts I hate working on...hence, why I hardly ever do a premix that has core tacked on..LOL. I remember when sit-ups fell out of favor...it was all about supposedly hurting your lower back...I think it was partially true...done incorrectly you can certainly do that. My brother is an example, he ruptured a disk doing straight legged sit-ups. I ruptured mine doing deadlifts. Exercise can be hazardous to your health! LOL You can get DA on PBS until March 9th...at least you would be able to start watching it...and it's free.

Josie, you sound like you are more than ready for the ride!

Garance, I do the same thing with those plank tricep kickbacks, too unsteady for me. I also saw Brenda & Cedie putting their leg down for some of the core work, in Core 1, like I was doing...I felt better for that!

Judy, I remember Echo was the one that you were worried about being so small when you first got her... She probably had the start of the disease already...so sad. Making that decision is the hardest thing to do...but you will know when it is right. I read that there are no meds or anything but that some that survive...is that true?

Lori, you must eat dinner very late, or do you do your evening workout after dinner?

Any plans for the weekend?

Work, agility class, then home to relax...

Hi Ladies,

I will be spinning today, spinning and body pump tomorrow and hard core and spinning on Sunday. All weekend rides have been cancelled because of the rain so I have to make up for it indoors :)

Deb, I like working my abs by doing different variations of planks and mountain climbers. They are very effective. Give it a try. I have a 70 mile ride on March 8th to get ready for a century that I signed up for on April 5th. Those two rides will let me know how ready I am ;)

Valerie, it's a good thing you canceled your trip. It has been pouring all night and it will continue through out the weekend. I feel sorry for the people running the marathon on Sunday.

Lori, I have not tried ruthless yet, but your reviews make me want to try it :)

Judy, sending you prayers and hugs.

Garance, enjoy the Oscars. You are ready for it. I will be watching it because of the fashion.

I schedules myself a facial this afternoon, I have not had one in a couple of years.

Have a nice weekend!

Josie

Josie we always check the forecasts before we do a drive. I'm happy you ( California in general) are finally getting some rain, but I've had enough here so I don't need to participate personally. we are still considering leaving this weekend if we don't get snow here to mess up the drive. I am in awe of how you can jump up your mileage like that. my legs can take it (I think) but my wrists can't. too cold here to wear anything but heavy gloves and they don't have decent padding, which does help somewhat. We've found that riding in the rain is generally miserable and avoid it if possible.

going mt biking this morning.

got some very bad news about a friend yesterday. out of the blue it appears she has a growth on her pancreas. there is only a small chance this will have a good outcome. it put me in a funk all day and night, I can't imagine what she must be feeling. she was on vacation when it was discovered so has to get home first ..a long flight... for further workup and surgery. made me feel silly for whining about my recent problem.

for core 1, I keep my feet up for the banana rolls but can't balance with both feet up for the side to side move that follows. I can keep one foot for the whole sequence but can't stay balanced so alternate feet.
Deb, I think that's right about sit ups. we used to do them with straight legs, someone holding our feet down ...in gym class, no less. I always felt they worked my mid section much better than crunches but stopped doing them entirely for a long time. I like mt climbers and plank work too. mostly, I like variety.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Flextrain (56:36).

Judy, I read about that feline disease at a Wikipedia article. It mentioned some kind of medication for the dry form that kept a kitty alive for a couple years. If the kitty is miserable, I'm not sure it's a good thing, but at least the dry form is not as aggressive as the wet form of the disease. I'm so sorry for you. I, too, am thinking of shifting my rotation, which is getting a bit old. I broke down yesterday when I received my collagevideo newsletter and bought a Jessica Smith dvd with 3 20 minute routines that you can do all together or a couple or just one. All 5 star reviews. I also bought a Jazzercise hiit dvd that looks more like a circuit workout, but thought I would give it a try.

Valerie, yes, that is the documentary I think I will try to watch on Amazon. It looks good. I don't have any problems with the banana rolls, but I mostly keep my feet down for the twists because it hurts my hips for some reason. On Flextrain, I don't know how Cathe keeps her hands behind her head for those final butterfly situps with feet together on the floor. I can do them if I cross my arms across my chest. I also suspect that full situps are okay if you do the C-curve when you sit up and don't just flip up from the waist. Sorry about your friend.

Which reminds me, Lori, what have you heard about your brother? Yes, I heard we MIGHT get more snow, but I am hoping this turns into a coastal storm veering off to the south, so it may hit NYC and the Cape but not come up too far. One can always hope.

Josie, it looks like the red carpet might be inundated. Hope not. I always like to see what the ladies are wearing and hear the pundits either praise or gag the styling. I know California is in a drought, but it looked like this might cause mud slides and flooding and rollovers and skids--or at least that is what the apocalyptic weathermen were reporting this morning. You sound in such great shape!

Deb, we have a rural lands foundation dinner on Sunday, but it's early, and I plan on spending the rest of the evening watching the Oscars.

Good afternoon ladies!

This morning I did p90xs cvx. Really like this one. You hold a weight (i use 8lbs) for the entire workout and you do circuits of three drills twice then move on to the next 3 and so on for 30 minutes. Time flies. No workout tonight as we are going to our favorite Mexican restaurant with another couple.

Deb..funny you should ask. I very rarely eat dinner. Usually it is yogurt and a protien bar. I have always been like this so it makes exercising in the evening very easy for me.

Valerie...so sorry about your friend. Very sad. Lynda...still waiting on the date for my brother. Last week he was told robots will be doing his surgery and they are planning things out. He has an appt next week that will give him more answers. Kind of scary if you ask me. Say if the robot is not programmed correctly!! Yikes.

Judy..prayers to you...I remember now you being very concern of how small Ehco was. Sending hugs you way. :(

Josie...I agree with Lynda. You must be in amazing shape! I used to love to ride. Now hardly ever get on my bike. I should pull it out and get it tuned up. Perhaps this would motivate me.

Tomorrow evening going to a Fur Ball with a few fiends It is a dinner to raise money for one of the local animal shelters. Our friends have gone for several years in the past and this will be our first time. It will be a good time for a great cause.

Have a good weekend all.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for reading about FIP, I appreciate that. It is a horrible disease. I have been reading that there is a treatment that has kept some cats alive for up to 2 years, but I don't know much about it yet.

Lynda, I agree, I wouldn't want her to be miserable. If the medicine can alleviate her symptoms and make her feel good that would be different. We are probably going to take Echo to a cat specialist. I don't know if it will make any difference for her, but someone who only sees cats will likely know more about FIP than a general vet.

Deb-I have read about a few cats surviving long term with FIP but I'm not sure if their situations are similar to Echo's. It does offer some hope.

Valerie-I'm so sorry about your friend.
I think Core 1 is harder than Core 2. Those banana roll sit ups are really hard for me.

Lori- I hope everything goes well for your brother.

Josie-Great job with all the workouts you are doing! I really need to do some long bike rides this summer too.

Today I did another Spinerval and Core 2.

My Hoka running shoes arrived, and they feel really good. I probably won't be running outside this weekend with them but I've
been walking around the condo in them and they fit perfect.

Hope everyone has a good weekend,

Judy

Good morning, and Happy Weekend!

We went out for breakfast this morning, to a new place that turned out to be very good, one of those family places, not a chain.

Josie, I believe planks and mountain climbers are the most effective for core work, actually read an article on that recently. They are the hardest things for me to do....probably why I do not have a strong core! I bet the facial was very relaxing...love those. :)

Garance, there was an article in the paper this morning about the people behind the scenes for the Oscars that do not get all the credit for the stars, red carpet hoopla etc...the flower place that has to make and deliver dozens of $600 a pop welcome bouquets, the guy that works 24 hours practically doing the $350 each spray tans! LOL....He is in such demand that he gets calls sometimes and does them at 2:00 am for some stars..thanks for the link on the shoes, will have to peruse that site.

Lori, I will keep your brother in my thoughts, hope all goes well...I wish I could eat something that simple for dinner, John would not go for that...what does your DH eat?

Judy, I hope there is some med for little Echo, at least to make her able to have the basic functions and be comfortable.

Valerie, have a good trip!

Agility class this morning, then a lot of HouseMax for me...

take care,

No dinner lori?? I am stunned. even eating dinner.... I usually wake up hungry at night. I don't eat anything then, but am always starving when I wake up in the morning.... one reason early am workouts don't work for me. I am too hungry, but get a side ache if I eat and then try to work out. so now I do things later in the day than I used to. I swear, the appetite is the last thing to go. also DH would have a total tantrum if he didn't get his dinner!
also Lori, unlike your brother, my friend had a very sudden onset of symptoms, jaundice, dark urine, and uncontrollable itching so she is on a fast track to get this thing taken care of ASAP. it came up suddenly while on vacation but I'm sure she probably thought hepatitis, as she and DH do a lot of travel. I know that's what I would have thought, not that that's a good thing either. I am hoping it's a cyst or other benign growth in a bad place but odds are not very good.

I did flex train bi's and tri's again yesterday. cathe calls the position for those kickbacks a tripod, so your butt is somewhat elevated. the first time I did them I thought they were VERY hard, but each time I do them they get easier, unlike mt climbers which I do, but they seem to be just as hard as the first time. If think there's a lot of overlap between core moves though, and doing any core workout several times a week helps a lot.

went on a short hike this morning. we went mt biking yesterday too, but only for an hour. it was incredibly wet and sloppy with huge amounts of blown down tree debris. 2 rides and a hike, I did manage to make my leg sore where it was sore last week. part of the healing process.

Deb, those people are also just a few feet out of the spotlight, kind of like the singers Lynda and I were talking about. did not see an article like that..maybe it will run in our sunday paper.

Judy I'm glad you will see a specialist. You need someone with expertise and experience with that particular disease to decide the best course of action. you want to give echo the best options available.
