Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 2/21

Hi Ladies,

Went spinning and Karina came over yesterday. Today I went to bootcamp, it was tough because of the cold I had, but I managed.

Deb, Karina has been training us for seven weeks and we are getting great results. I have lost 7 pounds and my DH has lost 10. Even though I've only lost 7 pounds I look like I've lost more. We both feel great.

Valerie, we need to re-do one of our bathrooms, but I don't want to go through what you have been going thru.
To bad your DS did not keep up with her clean house. Hope her surgery goes well.

Judy, hope that you get some relief. My sciatica lasted at least 4 months. I had 12 sessions of PT and rest.

Spring is definitely In the air and so is tons of pollen :(

Hi to Garance and Lori!

Josie

Good morning,

It's a balmy 7 degrees here right now....going up to 16 I think:rolleyes:.

Valerie, progress is slow but steady on your remodel...soon it will be all finished! We won't see any signs of spring here for about 2 more months.

Lynda, I watched Grantchester right on PBS Masterpiece Theatre. They have it where you can watch episodes. I checked out Breaking Bad on Amazon, that is not free. :( Agree, AfterBurn was a really tough workout. Is there a HIIT premix to do both together or did you just stop and start the other one?

Lori, you and Lynda did so well with barre workouts, I am tempted, but I remember the pain! Ouch! They are killers. That is probably why they get good results. I like that actor a lot, and I think you and DH will really like Bosch.

Josie, great results with the trainer workouts! Did you also do anything with your diet?

Hi to Judy, the "Spinerval Queen"

My retirement dinner is tonight...I have to admit, I am a little nervous. I hate being the center of attention...

Take care and stay warm!

Congrats Deb on your long career. hope dinner goes well and that you enjoy being the focus at least a little.

Josie, strong work with the weight loss. we actually like doing projects like this but this one has had it's issues making it drag out too long.

I 'm struggling...... not gaining, not losing. eating very clean. it just sits at the same number. did another 2 hr mt bike yesterday. we tried a new area. not sure this one will work. going up was a long uphill grind but that's OK. I ride as much as I can, then walk, then get back on and ride. going down was too hard. very windy with tight corners. the turns were so close together that getting off and walking around the corner there was no room to ride before the next corner! DH can ride corners but I panic and can't go slow enough to get around and I stop. I walked back uphill to the road and went down the way we'd come up. very hard to find a good map of the area with current trails... this was supposedly a 'blue" route so not a double black diamond or something. if we can get a better map I hope we can find something less difficult.

I'm dropping out of WW. I got too annoyed with their website, constantly having to log in. will not leave you logged in even for a day. every time you leave the page you need to re-login. I've complained but does no good. tracking has gotten so annoying. I am eating what I'm supposed to, but it takes me forever to enter it. makes me think about food way more than otherwise.... maybe most people eat the same thing all the time so tracking is easy? entering recipes takes me forever. I will stick with their eating plan but not paying for it after mid march.

called my sister and she did fine with the surgery. had a seizure at home later but they covered her eye with protection so all was OK.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did LLA (48:33).

Yes, Deb, there is a premix where you can do the two of them together, using the warm-up from the first workout and the cool-down and stretch from the second. When you do the premixes with the added on abs, you don't really get a stretch. I found the PBS masterpiece theater episodes on demand. I will try them out, maybe tonight. Enjoy your retirement dinner party. I certainly enjoyed mine. It will be a long time, I suspect, before Breaking Bad is on Amazon Prime. They are doing reruns of it all the time on AMC.

That sounds like quite a workout, Valerie. Too bad about the WW rigmarole on tracking. I would hate it--too much trouble, and you're right, it could be counterproductive thinking about food all the time.

Lori, I saw The Town when it came out. It's about Charlestown where my younger son lives--in the bad old days. Pretty gentrified now.

Josie, it sounds like you are back on track with your workouts, and your DH is doing well too.

Doing a wine-tasting tomorrow night with small plates at Mezze's. I adore the woman who is doing it and when she was Mezze's sommelier, she always chose a glass of wine for me that I loved with whatever I was eating. She's working for some magazine now about wine.

Good morning, & Happy Friday! and my last day for

The dinner was great last night. Very emotional. I will be going in this morning, hope to get out by noon.

Valerie, glad your sister's surgery went well. I hope this helps her. I know we have mentioned here, ( Judy and me) but I really like My Fitness Pal a lot. You can stay logged in all the time, unless you do a system virus scan, and your settings have all your sites log off. They track how many days you have logged in, and report it in your news feed, ..if you like that kind of tracking, you need to log off each day, but that isn't important to everyone.

Lynda, hope you like Grantchester, I am looking forward to the second season. I hope it doesn't take as long as Doc Marten. The wine tasting and small plates dinner sounds wonderful!

Hi to Josie, Judy & Lori,

Anyone have any fun plans for the weekend?

Hi Ladies,

No workout for me today. Karina insisted that I take a day off. I ran yesterday and worked out with Karina. Tomorrow I plan on taking Zumba and body pump and on Sunday I will be participating in a 5k to honor my dear friend Jeannie who passed away 6 years ago and my brother Juan who has been gone for 24 years. Both of them loved doing the Firecracker race every year.

Deb, glad that you had a wonderful dinner. My DH and I have been eating clean at least 80% of the time. We are not in a rush to lose weight :)

Garance, one if the owners of the place where I had my retirement party is a sommelier and I love going there for dinner and having him recommend the wine to go with my meal.

Valerie, I just write down everything I eat in a notebook for the day and this has worked for me. I hate plugins my meals in the computer.

Lori, hoping that you did not get any more snow.

Hi to Judy!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did KCM's Cardio Quick Fix, both workouts (44:39).

Deb, all the best on your retirement! I bet the dinner was great. I think it is actually gratifying to others to see someone retiring in good health and ready to do all those fun things that have been on hold while working. I watched episodes 3 and 4 of Grantchester (episodes 1 and 2 are no longer available) and liked it well enough to watch 5 and 6. The Brits always seem very good with imagining provincial life in earlier periods.

Josie, you are amazing on all of your workouts. That sounds like a very busy weekend.

We may be getting more snow on Sunday night. Sigh! At least next week looks a bit warmer.

Enjoy the weekend everyone!

I'm going back to PT today, trying a different NSAID and will go maybe 2 weeks. if this isn't better, I will go for another cortisone injection and this time I will stay away from the blasted kayak. I didn't think it was hard enough to set me back like this.

when we were looking for something to watch at lunch... I saw Grandchester flash by. will look closer on sunday. we'd been watching Morning Joe some days, but it's not available Hulu as of 2/27. no idea why. thing seem to come and go at will without any explanation. I miss political commentary ... I don't have to agree with everyone all the time but like to hear different 'takes" on events. I used to like the sunday am talking heads but have not watched them in a long time. I didn't like David Gregory and chuck todd I like even less. I sure miss tim russert.

we checked on our door and it's supposed to be in on Monday. I'll believe it when I see it.

Good evening ladies!

I did Barre at lunch today but no workout tonight. My DH and I needed to go to a wake. Yesterday was a ruthless workout and then I went to one of our monthly food shelters our company does. Toms of running around at these. This time it was close by for me. Lately they have been way to far away for me to go to and then drive home.

Deb....congratulations!!! It's here! I am so happy for you. I can't wait to hear how you fill up your days. I here once you retire you are busier than ever!!!! Lol!

Lynda...yup more snow!!!!! Ugh!!! I'll try the same thing and watch 2 and 3. Perhaps I can catch 1 and 2 as repeats.

Valerie...wow the door seemed to come quicker than I thought. I have been taking diclofenac for my shoulder and it really has helped.

Josie...great job on the workouts! I agree with your trainer though and when you are sick you need your rest days. I'll be thinking of you on Sunday!

Hi to Judy!

Tomorrow I am looking forward to doing this past Thursday's live bootcamp with step. Looks like a great workout!

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did an easy indoor ride. I didn't even use the bike computer, just my HRM watch. I kept my HR under 135.
Today I did XTrain Bi's and Tri's, timesaver premix. I also went to the chiropractor and got a massage. The massage seemed to help a little, but I know I will have to go to the doctor next week and see about getting a cortisone shot.

I just ordered a book from Amazon: "Fast after 50" by Joel Friel. I'm not expecting to get fast :) I'm just hoping that it will help me with setting up a training schedule where I'm not injured so much :(

Congrats Deb! I bet you will be busier than ever with lots of fun things to do!

Lori-I just printed out Suzanne Bowen's Spring into Fitness sheets for March and April. I'm going to follow the schedule, doing whatever doesn't aggravate my sciatic/piriformis. I'm hoping that the barre leg work is going to be better for me than heavy weight work right now.

Tomorrow we are going to Toledo for a stamp show. I think I mentioned before that DH is a stamp collector and since his father passed he has been getting back into it. I've been helping DH sort and organize stamps so I'm slowly getting a little more involved with it too.

Hi to Valerie, Lynda & Josie! Have a great weekend!

Good morning,

Wow..busy here yesterday, everyone posting! I stayed at the office until around 12:30 yesterday, then turned in all my "stuff" and headed home. A very emotional day, lots of tears. It's amazing, but it still has not sunk in that I am not going back.

Josie, I think when the trainer says to take a day off, you need to listen! Good for you on the clean eating. It seems to be working.

Lynda, I thought episode 2 was available for Grantchester, must have been mistaken. I hope you like it enough to finish the season. The interaction between Sydney and Geordie is pretty interesting.
I started watching season 2 of Mr. Selfridge last night. It's a PBS TV show, but is available free on Amazon Prime. I watched season 1 and it was pretty good.

Valerie, yes, I think staying away from kayaking is a good decision for a while.

Lori, it is so great that your company participates in the shelter activities and the workers are there to help. I hope that I am really busy doing stuff around the house first, especially now when going outside is not pleasant.

Judy, did you ever get an MRI to see if there is any disk issue? That is how they found that I had a ruptured disk, and no chiropractor, epidural, PT or anything was going to help. That's great that you can get involved with a hobby with your DH. John and I used to shoot in a league, and it was really fun. I stopped, coincidentally when my back issue started, and never went back to it. He kept on for a bit, but then got distracted as well. Now we have the dog training/showing which is nice too.

Agility class this morning, lots of Housemax to do. We are going to a steak restaurant for dinner that is 3 blocks from here....I got one of those Living Social deals, $50 certificate for $22...They have an awesome chopped salad.

Take care,

I went to PT yesterday.they gave me a passive day. ultrasound, massage, and ice and told me no exercise for a few days. so guess what.... I'm following directions. I iced twice yesterday. when they move my arm around passively there is no discomfort at all so only with muscle tendon engagement. that is no proof of much except it's not a joint problem. I am not getting a mri because I have the pacer, and one can't be anywhere big magnetic fields. that is the biggest disadvantage to this device! other imaging is possible but not as good.

I did a spin yesterday afternoon, 35 minutes, then PT expecting to work out some. we were planning a bike ride today because ( sorry to be so insensitive) it's clear and sunny and getting to the mid 50's. there is absolutely no low level snow, causing concern already for the fire season this summer. it's possible to get a load of snow in march but the trend is not that way. plants are weeks ahead of schedule. mountain pics show zero snow pack down low where usually there would be 8-10 feet. people are doing all kinds of summer hikes that aren't usually open until june.
we were going to do a road ride today but unfortunately DH got a bad headache in the middle of the night. not feeling too good right now. if was weird ...his neurologist called him last night to see how he was doing( they know each other casually and professionally) and he'd had none since the bad one when we started vacation a month ago. both of them think it's caffeine related and mostly I do too but I wonder if there's something else we haven't identified. I understand people get migraines because they are prone to them and there may not always be a direct cause/effect but It sure would make things easier if there were another trigger to ID.

Deb I think you will feel a little lost for a while. I know I did. Work takes up such a big important part of your life and when it's "gone" suddenly, you feel like a big chunk of your life is missing. my departure from my last big job was traumatic and I was in no way ready or prepared to leave but suddenly the rug was pulled out from under and everything changed. you've had a pleasant and planned departure but it was a big part of your life. I would call it a grieving process that has to be gotten through. you also have all of us happy retirees to talk to! so a period of adjustment is coming.

ETA we did a short road ride. a gorgeous day but pretty chill in the am. 15 miles. DH didn't want to do any hard hike or bouncy mt biking. I wish we could get to the bottom of the migraine issue. this came at 2-3 am and woke him up.
