Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 2/2

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did XTrain ch, ba, sh (51:16).

I don't know if the storm is over or if it is just a hole in the precipitation, but we have about 6 inches and it isn't doing much now.

Deb, DH and Max set off with the steers. Max loves long truck rides, and everywhere he goes, people give him treats. Last week, the restaurant staff came up to see the livestock, and I think Max was "flirting" with the pastry chef. He grabbed her mitten and sallied off with it until DH called him back. She made him a whole bunch of mitten treats a couple days later. What a little lover. I should have named him Don Juan.

Lori, I did see on the weather that Boston was getting hammered, and you are probably in the zone of heaviest snow. Hey, at least it isn't an ice storm like they had in Pennsylvania. Be thankful for small favors, I guess. I will have to check out that premix. I am so lazy about exploring everything on my dvds. Probably missing a lot of good stuff.

Valerie, that is so frustrating when doctors cannot communicate with one another. How many doctors have been involved in her treatment plan?

Hi to Judy and Josie!

Hi Everyone,

This morning I did Muscle Endurance before work. We got another 3-4 inches of snow and now it's getting colder again. This winter has been relentless. At least we didn't get an ice storm so I won't complain too much.

Deb-Thanks! The ride wasn't that hard and if I can do it, I know you all could too. I'll probably try doing a ride like that every 2 weeks or so. I'll have to get into the Downton Abbey reruns or do one of longer Spinervals. I have to admit that for long rides the time goes much faster when watching programs than it does when doing a virtual ride or a Spinerval.

It sounds like FIL will be on put on oxygen. His lung function was very poor. We had a Skype meeting with SIL last night and we are all just hoping that we can get FIL to move sooner rather than later as his health is steadily deteriorating.

Valerie-we have seen the same thing with FIL and all his doctors. They don't communicate very well with each other and no one seems know who did what. DH will call FIL's primary doctor with a question and get told to call the Cardiologist, who will tell DH to call the primary doctor  It's like no one wants to be responsible.
I hope things get better for your sister.

Lori-wow, you got a lot of snow! I shouldn't be complaining at all. You will be doing lots of snowmax!

Josie- I don't like people who are so negative, especially when doing something fun and positive like spinning or working out. I remember people like that from my spinning class days. I always wondered why they even went if they hated it so much

Lynda-thanks, I hope that DH will enjoy P90X. It should at least help him feel better and get his mind off of FIL and work stress.

Have a good night!

Judy

Doctors used to call each other and talk about patients / problems. I think maybe the newer generation of docs don't do that? since advent of EMR(electronic medical records) everyone inputs directly into the record system.
I used to do medical transcription and when DH dictated he's say who he wanted copied the note from seeing a patient. I faxed them to each office listed. they went into the chart. now, paper charts are history. probably so are most phone conversations since young people don't seem to talk to each other anymore.
Lots of people use Dragon. also, docs type in their own notes now, so that is a lot of typing and it probably gets shortcut. much easier (old days) to dictate into a tape recorder and have someone else ( me) type up the note. plus so many new docs are from other countries. does not help communication. so, many reasons.

ETA did Flex train again today. this was not a good workout to do the day after bi's and tri's. I was a little sore and tired in arms/shoulders already. went thru as best as I could but I should know better. should have done treadmill instead.

Good morning,

Today I did KCM's Power Sculpting 34 minutes.

Lots of snow yesterday and overnight, it's 10 degrees here now and the high is supposed to be 13. Lovely.

Valerie, I have never seen a coyote, and would love to see the pups. I bet they are really cute. Glad your sister was discharged, but sorry to hear what has been going on. I do not believe that some people in the medical field, ( not only the DR's) don't communicate...lots of examples of it. I agree 100% with your assessment of how the medical field is today...all they do is carry around a laptop so they can type away..but not one talks to each other. My last episode with illness showed this to be very true.

Lori, SnowMax is a great calorie burn..:)

Garance, Max aka Don Juan...the little cutie, he sure knows how to scam some treats doesn't he? Looking for a new series to watch on Amazon...any suggestions?

Judy, if your FIL will need to be on oxygen 24/7, you will most likely have to get someone in with him. I can't imagine he would keep that on all day without someone monitoring it. My father and MIL had to be on 24/7 and they hated it, but knew the rationale behind it etc. Did you ever watch Damages? That is available on Amazon...I watched all 5 seasons and got addicted! I hope they eventually do a season 6.

Hi to Josie,

Work, then a haircut/color and wax...I hate going after work but this was the only time she could take me before my trip...

Stay warm!

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did All Out Low Impact Hiit +core 1 (49:22).

Deb, the Sherlock Holmes PBS series is really good. I think there are 6 episodes, and each of them is 90 minutes long. I just finished watching this season on PBS, but it probably won't be on Amazon Prime for awhile. The Good Wife has a lot of seasons on Prime and is very very good. I'm pretty certain there won't be any more Damages. I watched all of them too, but gradually found them too gimmicky. I also enjoyed Amazon's original series, Alpha House, although each episode is only about 25 min. long.

Judy, it sounds as though your FIL has a whole bunch of specialists, each doing his or her own thing. Maybe that is one of our problems with health care. I know the Cleveland Clinic and the Mayo Clinic work in teams and this lowers the cost of health care at the same time that the patient receives a comprehensive evaluation and approach to needed care.

Cold and snowy here too. Brrrr! I am so over winter.

Deb, I'm seen hundreds of coyotes! in parks and wild places, but mostly suburban areas. they've adapted to rural and city areas where they eat pet food that gets put out, get into garbage, gardens, and pets themselves. I've seem them living in the freeway median! assume they get by on road kill and discarded food. once you see a few, you know what they look like and see them everywhere. saw coyote puppies in my aunt's back yard .. just like any puppy. playing with each other, rolling around , just cute as heck. look mostly like a shepherd, lab, or golden retriever puppy. we hear them howling sometimes. don't have a big population in this neighborhood but they really are everywhere.

yes, everyone face down in their laptop.... sometimes it almost seems like an interruption for someone to look up at you! I'm reminded of how it is in restaurants and airports now, everyone face down into personal electronics, and no conversation happening anywhere.

Lynda, my sister has about 4 docs, and has seen many others during this process, probably hospitalists and neuro residents. her main neurologist referred her to a new guy but sister didn't like him. when she needed to be admitted in Nov, the doc she'd been referred to was gone on a family leave, so I took his colleague, who my sister sees now. she also has a FP, has seen cardiology briefly. those are the main ones. maybe the neurologists have talked but it doesn't seem like it.
she is back on the original medication but there was some problem with it because that was why neuro #1 referred her to neuro #2 to begin with. so now she will have to repeat the original problem, so neuro #3 can learn what it is firsthand. I can't believe everyone is being so stupid.

even after I talked to neuro #3, she didn't do any cardiac checks while sister was in the hospital, where it would have been easy and no risk to my sister, who now goes back home alone and has no idea why she is passing out and falling on the floor without warning.
Judy, hope you have better luck with the medical system than we've had recently.

we had the massive Seahawks parade yesterday... 700,000 people and no violence or problems. I am proud (and relieved) that this city could pull off this kind of massive get together with no violence whatsoever...worst we heard was someone getting hit by some skittles being thrown from the motorcade. any big event like this, I worry about random violence, or worse yet, terrorism. guess that's hard wired into me now.

Good evening ladies!

This morning was Ruthless Wicked Lower Body. Worked late again tonight so I did 100 rep challenges for bis and tris figured that was better than nothing!

Tomorrow night will be a fun night...bunch of girls going to the theater to see the play Spank Harder....parody of the 2nd 50 shades of grey book. Same girls saw the first Spank last year. Omg the laughs we had.

Valerie and Deb..I know what you mean with all the personal devices. While down the Cape last summer my husband and I walked into an ice cream shop and sitting at a table were 6 teenage girls all staring at their phones. No one was talking to each other! I remember thinking how sad.

Congrats Valerie on the Seahawks! Kudos to your city with no violence. Amazing accomplishment.

Where I live the hospital is all connected to all the doctors I go to so they seem to get all my records which is nice.

I need to check out some of the TV shows your girls talk of. They all sound really good. I was watching Sons of Anarchy for a while while running but lately have not been in the mood to run.

Chester goes back for a followup tomorrow morning for his ankle. Since on the meds he has been doing really well. Would never know he had a bad ankle. He was running around like a maniac in the snow yesterday and I kept thinking boy he is going to be sore later on...but nope he is great. Very happy meds are working wonderfully.

Have a great night all!

Good morning,

Did the treadmill with my girl Grace this morning....I forgot how much she blabbers away...

We got a ton of snow between yesterday and this morning...ugh....not happy about that....I keep thinking about flying Sunday morning.

Garance, thanks for the suggestions on series to watch. I heard about The Good Wife from someone else too, maybe I'll start that one.

Valerie, there were coyotes out around where my father used to live...they actually had to tell people not to leave their pets unattended in yards etc....cats were disappearing...:(. I never saw one though...US Customs in Seattle closed for Super Bowl celebration events....we thought that was kind of silly...never heard of it before, but maybe the parades etc were right where they were and no one could get to them anyway. I hope your sister is able to get through this, it sounds like they are all just shuffling her around...

Lori, glad to hear that Chester is doing better. Have fun at the play. A parody of 50 Shades of Grey sounds strange but I can see how they could make it a comedy..( I hated the book, could not get through the first one)..

Hi to Josie & Judy!

Someone said yesterday that this reminds them of the winters when we were kids...all the big snow banks on the sides of the streets we used to climb up on..

Work, agility class ( unless it's cancelled) then

Stay safe & warm!

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Flextrain (56:36).

No snow here, but it's cold. Tomorrow we will probably go snowshoeing since it promises to be a sunny day. Going to see Bruce Dern in Nebraska--probably on Sunday afternoon. Maybe a comfort Sunday meal.

We have plenty coyotes, raccoons, foxes, porcupines, a few bears, and fisher cats. We hear them more often than see a lot of them.

I agree Deb--this does remind me of walking to grade school with my BFF and trying to walk on top of the snow piles.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Hi. I was wondering if this group is open for new members. I am 54 and have been working out to Cathe for 20+ years. Thank you.

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did a Spinerval and this morning I did Gym Style Legs and core work.

Deb-FIL is going to have to be on oxygen 24/7. DH and SIL both think this will be the thing that causes him to have to move. There is just no way he can safely use oxygen at home by himself. DH is going to talk to him tomorrow.
I looked up Damages on Amazon, looks like something I would like. Maybe I'll watch a few during my long ride on Monday. Thanks!

Lynda-I am so over winter too! I feel like I live in an igloo  I can't get away from the snow.
All of the snow does remind me of when I was growing up. Seems we had more winters like this back in the 70's.

Valerie-I'm sorry you are having problems with the medical system too. I hope things get better for your sister.

Lori-I hope Chester's vet visit was good, I'm glad that he is doing well with the medicine.
Hope you are having a fun night!

Hi to Josie & Welcome to Grandma Joni!

Judy

Absolutely grandmajoni. please feel free to join in.

DH and I went xc skiing today. not perfect because we are short of snow but more is coming soon. like most activities, there's a break-in period where you get used to the activity and remember how to do it. every year. this year we've skied once. until today. a road that used to be a favorite but has been taken over by snowmobiles to some degree. enough fresh snow to be usable but snowmobile tracks underneath. we can use it weekdays if there's fresh snow.
very pretty, clear sunny and cold. snow was kind of chopped up for going downhill but this has been a meager year so far, so we will have to settle for it.

yesterday I did yoga in the am, treadmill for 35, 40 knee push ups, and core 1. today 4 1/2 hours of skiing. tired tonight.

Deb, I'm not a big sports fan, but this sea hawks superbowl win eclipsed anything I ever saw. these guys are incredible local heroes and the crowds just love them. never saw anything like it. a bunch of schools closed down, and the ones that didn't close had about 25% absentee rate because everyone went nuts. downtown seattle and all roads in and out were total gridlock for the day.

I don't often agree with him, but Charles Krauthammer 's column this week addresses several medical issues, one is the one we've been talking about.... medical records, docs not talking because they're too busy recording data.

Lynda, I'd give a LOT to see a fisher. they're been re-introduced to the Olympics but don't know how they're doing yet. too soon to say. they were "trapped out" along with pine martens many years ago.. hope it's successful.

I would highly recommend The Good Wife. by far, my favorite series. I liked Damages too, but it seemed a little contrived, eventually. still think it's a fun one to watch though.

I don't know how 24/7 O2 works but seems like he'd need help regularly. Hope the oxygen becomes so important soon that he sees the need and goes agreeably.

Good morning ladies! And welcome Grandma Joni!

Yesterday morning I wanted to do a weighted leg workout since I knew I would be home late. Decided on a 35 minute legs only premix from High Reps. It was perfect and I felt I had a great workout in such a short time. Used my squat rack for a bit which I liked.

I have only started looking at Cathe's premixes recently. Not sure why I never did any before. I have loved all that I have done so far and they feel like brand new workouts.

Not sure what is on the agenda today for a workout. Going to take Chester for a walk that I know. He is doing very well and the meds are doing wonders for him. Hoping they continue to work as he ages.

The play was ok. Very silly. We were all dissapointed as it did not follow the book at all. Matter-a-fact not sure what book it was following! Felt mislead. First one was hysterical this one good but dissapointing to all of us.

Valerie...sounds like you had tons of exercise in one day. I bet the parade was an awesome experience. I have never been when a Boston Team has one but watched on TV. Fun.

Deb...I laughed about your comment with Grace. That's how I feel when I do a Leslie walking Dvd with the girls. Over the top chatter!

Judy...hope the conversation goes well with your FIL. He might realize it on his own now that he is on oxygen.

Lynda...have a great comfort Sunday. Looks like we are not getting they storm the originally predicted and that is OK with me!!

Hi to Josie!!!

No plans this weekend. Errands and housemax :D

Lori, it's been nothing but Seahawks on the news for what seems like weeks now. I did not go to the parade but between the TV and newspaper coverage it feels like there has been no other news at all. I'm ready for it to settle down.

I never used premixes until recently ...I don't know why.... but they really work well for when you need a shortened workout, you want to avoid a certain move, or want abs without fussing with the disk at the end. I don't memorize workouts so chapters 1-5 doesn't mean anything to me but a printed workout sheet makes it fast to see what each premix will give you. I'm notorious for not allowing enough time for a full workout before dinner and 35 minutes sure beats getting sidetracked and not doing anything.
glad Chester is doing well on his meds.

Lynda, please report back on Nebraska. we just tried to watch The Butler and were disappointed. tedious. way too long. they managed to make the civil rights struggle not very interesting by putting too much in. casting was a stretch. Oprah was a distraction & really didn't belong in the movie. she had a big part and didn't help things. usually I like forest whittaker but he was not very compelling somehow. robin Williams and john cusack? oh I just didn't like the whole thing. nice idea but over long and poor casting choices.

Good afternoon!

Agility class was cancelled last night, but today's was on and I took Kylee instead of Keegan. It was a "jumper's" course and Keegan is not fond of jumping. It's a balmy 11 degrees here right now...but at least it is sunny and not snowing !

Garance, I assume that is a movie that you are going to see? Have a great Comfort Food Sunday meal !

Grandmajoni, Welcome !

Judy, yes, the whole 24/7 oxygen process is very difficult unless someone is prepared to understand how the tanks work and have a cord ( sometimes up to 50 feet) dragging behind you while trying to maneuver around the house. My father and MIL hated it, but understood why it was necessary and put up with it. I think you will like Damages. It takes a little getting used to the filming style.

Valerie, yes, SIL lives in Seattle and they are thrilled with the win as well. Nice that the crowd was very polite and no problems etc. Very rare that happens.

Lori, yes, Leslie Sansone is kind of like Grace...whooping and holler'n through the workout....I miss Coach Sean from Cardio Coach...:(. It sounds like Chester is mended and the meds will keep him going!

Josie, are you doing the ride tomorrow?

Packing this afternoon, plane is at 7:00 am tomorrow...free wifi in the rooms so I will probably check in with the iPad....I swear I have to have a separate bag just for my electronic junk!

Take care,

Thanks for the warm welcome. I too live in Washington....Olympia, about 60 miles south of Seattle. Must admit to being a big Seahawk fan....since early 80's after college. Watched so many ups and downs and games where I swore at the TV and said I would never watch again! So, this year was so much fun and we finally know what it feels like to win a Super Bowl! It's been a really fun few weeks as my entire family loves football.
I have been a Cathe fan for almost as long. I started her workouts at home in my early 30's and am now 54. Pretty much the only DVD's I do. I do my best to work out 5 to 6 days a week, but have always seemed to struggle with the same 20 pounds....lose, gain, lose, gain. I am very frustrated with it, so finally after having a very long list of blood tests and hormone analysis, I have been told I am menopausal, leptin resistant and probably have messed up my metabolism so much, advised to slow down on the exercise program to give my adrenals a rest. Apparently just causing more stress.
I have been on Cathe.com for a long time, and always read such good advice. I figured it was time to join in with ladies who may be at the same point in life that I am!

My diet is fairly healthy....have tried them all, clear back to the Beverly Hills Diet days, but have finally realized it's better for me just to eat clean. Still struggle to lose so maybe it is my metabolism.

My work can be stressful....I am a commercial real estate broker, but I also love what I do, so it's balanced in my opinion. I have 3 grown kids and 4 grandkids. Last year...2 weddings and 2 new babies! Maybe that's the stress part!

I am looking forward to getting to know everyone and hope I can bring as much to the discussion as well as any advice from you all. Thanks again!

Hi Ladies,

Welcome Gramdma Joni! On Thursday I walked 30 minutes on the TM at 3.5 incline, I did not feel like going to the gym. On Friday I did muscle max and today I did a 42 mile ride that included a 4.5 mile hill.

Grandma Joni, I'm 57 and have two grown kids and 4 grandkids and live in Los Angeles. I'm training for my 3rd Aids Life Cycle ride from San Francisco to LA.

Deb, I decided to ride today because my Sunday group is doing the Malibu route that I don't like. It was a beautiful ride and the air was clean since it rained yesterday. Have a safe trip.

Garance let us know what the comfort meal was. Your description of the meals make my mouth water ;)

Lori, my hard core and body pump classes have really strengthen my legs along with the spinning classes. I felt great going up the 4.5 mile hill today.

Judy, hope your FIL changes his mind.

Valerie, I've alway wanted to try Xcode skiing. Maybe one of these days i can convince my DH to try it.

Josie
