Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 2/16

Good morning,

No workout today, I am in a slump, it's been a week now since I did anything. Not sure why, but I am so tired.

Valerie, glad your fingers are on the mend, and that your knee was just temporary thing. Funny you mentioned the overheard conversations...when that happens, I almost cringe at what they may be about to say...like I want to tell them to "shhhhh"..funny.

Lori, hope the drive is good for you today. Sorry about your loss.

Judy, kudos to you for being able to finish that workout!

Garance, I feel the same as you, why does Mary get all the suitors? Edith is more interesting, with her London activities, job etc.

Hi to Josie,

Work, then home, nothing much here, waiting for the "Big Thaw" tomorrow. We'll see. They are already putting out flood warnings. This winter has to end soon right?

Deb, I cringe too, afraid someone might say something very personal or drop the f-bomb. .... there are some moments, like when watching a loved one compete in an event, that media ( IMO)have no business intruding at all , let alone broadcasting personal comments between people whispering to each other. I can't believe they have permission to use this! these people are definitely not in front of someone with a mike where they know they are being recorded. sometimes it's even self talk... one was bode miller's wife whispering to herself while he was in the launch gate at top of the run.

Hand continues to look better each day. knee is bothering me again today, though not as much as the first day. getting so some "part" is bothering me all the time.

DH is getting a root canal this morning. he has teeth from hell. his whole family does, but they didn't get good dental care as kids which didn't help. he gets abscesses that show up for no reason. he is not going to be happy today..... and then after days of rain some of the ski areas got 5-6 feet of new snow... today the sun is shining. so timing couldn't be worse. no way will he be able to do anything and that will tick him off further.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Burn Sets bis and tris (37:15).

I did a short workout because the plumber was coming to replace one of our toilets in the bathroom where I like to shower. The old one had a crack on its base.

Valerie, I sort of like overhearing the curling teams, especially the Swedes and Norwegians, because they are so loud and enthusiastic and I can understand most of what they are saying. But I know what you mean--microphones everywhere and they pick up everything. I am so glad Congress nixed the use of cellphones on airplanes while in flight. I come from a family with crooked teeth and I had braces in my 40s along with my guys. Root canals are no fun!

Lori, I agree--enough is enough already with the snow! I hope your drive is a safe one to New Bedford. Even the titles of your workouts scare me.

Deb, I wonder if they had actually finished shooting when they put out that dvd. It didn't sound like it from the EW article. By the way, EW always does a recap of the show and they always put together the best quotes from Maggie Smith. She's the best thing on the show. I assume she will be doing something to help Edith.

Judy, 2 hours is pretty tough. All that ball work on the legs from ME plus more legs, plus cycling--your legs must be fried! For some reason the ball work for legs is particularly hard for me--I think because the ball slips and slides too much on my carpet.

Hi to Josie!

Good morning,

It's supposed to thaw a bit today, hopefully there will not be flooding.

Valerie, hope your DH's dental work is ok, and he does not have any issues.

Garance, I don't know about the shooting for the DVD etc. It could not be sent to purchasers until January 28th, that was the release date. I would think it would be finished by the time the show was started on TV. ( Jan 5th), I am going to try to contact the seller and complain, just to let them know how terrible it was to sell those They are "official" and everything, as far as I can tell.

Hi to Josie, Judy & Lori,

Work, then home to relax, woke up at 2:30 this morning and didn't get back to sleep until around 4:30, then up at 5:20....another long day...

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did All Out Low Impact Hiit + Core 1 (49:22). I am hooked on this workout--no dread, lots of variety, and only a couple hard intervals. I guess it's intermediate and therefore appropriate for me.

Deb, did you buy your dvd from Amazon? You definitely should complain. I just finished Anna Quindlen's Still Life with Bread Crumbs. I strongly recommend--definitely a woman's book, and the heroine is 60. I zipped through it in a couple days. That's rough when you cannot get back to sleep. Maybe you should just get up and read or have a glass of warm milk if all you do is toss and turn. It's up to 40 degrees and sunny here today. It felt a little spring like, but it's still February.

I'm looking forward to the women's figure skating long program tonight. USA is still within reach of some medals, but wow, the South Korean skater is spectacular.

DH isn't happy... been up with pain since 3 am. you would think they would offer pain meds for a couple days after a procedure like that, but he had to call and ask, and now need to wait for a call back. could have gotten something yesterday when I was shopping. what are the chances you WON"T need pain meds after a root canal? I never had one so can't speak from experience.

My knee is unpleasant today. I figured out it's the shoes I've worn lately. they were trail running shoes but didn't like how they affected my foot strike... the seem to snap my foot inward and downward... so I relegated them to casual shoes but wore them a lot in the last few days and I think that is the problem. DH has a pair too and didn't like them for the same reason. if this is it, I should be improving as the day goes on.

Deb, have you considered an indoor machine?? treadmill, elliptical, or stationary bike ? there are days when simple is best. my right calf is sore, so did 30 on the elliptical... no stress to the sore spots... while I watched the Olympics. much less fuss, effective, and if you have 15 minutes, you jump on and go for 15. with a workout DVD need to decide things, which workout or premix you can fit in, find the disk, getting things set up... and the 15 min is gone. Plus, I get to watch something on TV. I don't do it as much as I used to mostly because there's so little to watch on normal TV, but it is WAY simpler for short times than a Cathe workout. I would be crazy if I couldn't work out for a week.

Hi Ladies,

I went to my body pump class this morning. I plan to go spinning tomorrow and a 47 mile ride on Saturday and hard core on Sunday.

Valerie, I have had 3 root canals, the first 2 were fine and did not have any pain at all, but the Dentist sent me home with a prescription for vicadin (sp) but never had to use it. The third I almost jumped off the chair when he hit a nerve and had to go back several time until he got it right, but I still did not need the pain meds. I guess my pain tolerance is very high.

Deb, it's had to get back on track when you get back from a trip. You will get there :)

Hi to Lori, Judy and Garance!

Josie

Good morning,

Now it's rainy and icy, hovering around 32 degrees, just to make it interesting.

Garance, I need to go back and try that workout again, I really do not remember it at all. I got the DVD's from Ebay, a reputable seller, with thousands of sales, so I figured they were pretty good. I did contact them by e-mail and let them know about the DVD's....it doesn't make sense, I keep going back to them and looking for the last episode! Not there. I requested that book you recommended from the library, read the write up on Amazon, it looks good.

Valerie, I hope your DH is able to get some relief. It's funny that you can track your knee pain to a pair of shoes, but lucky that you did. I do have a treadmill, and use it regularly, it's just right now I am mentally tired as well as physically. I will get out of this slump, hopefully this weekend.

Josie, every time I read that you went to a body pump class, I am intrigued and wish we had something like that around here. I do not want to join a fitness club, ( actually have a life membership at one but it's about 15 miles away)...I would like to just find classes like that and "pay as you go"...

Hi to Lori, & Judy,

Work, then class tonight... ahhh..the weekend is here!

ok...just read an e-mail reply from the seller on Ebay:

Please understand I don't make these dvds my self and those are the ones that have for sale in anywhere in USA, even if you buy this from a different vendor you get the same thing

let me just make sure one thing ....
the copy you got from me , is it season 4 or series 4?

if it does say series 4, then its not the one made for US market
if this would be the case I will gladly send you a replacement
if not that's how they made it ...

Mine does say "series 4",,,,,who would have thought they would make 2 different sets, and why? who would want one without the finale???? , Even though I will be able to see it on PBS after Sunday, I want the complete set so I gave him my address and hopefully he will send the replacement set.

Sorry Deb, didn't realize you had a treadmill. I used to do that exclusively, then we got an elliptical. I use the treadmill often, the elliptical less, but it felt good the other day so I have renewed interest. the problem has been mostly nothing to watch while I'm on either of them!
that seems silly... the season finale ties up loose ends and sets up teasers for the next season. I can't imagine why a series would be sold and not include it.

My leg is much better this morning. it was a big muscle strain I guess. I could barely walk yesterday. went to yoga anyway and worked around the discomfort. so odd... from a pair of shoes, only my rt leg. running shoes are made in different types to fit or correct the way your foot contacts the ground. these never were comfortable running but apparently not even as a casual shoe. I wore them several days in a row without thinking it could be a problem.... until it was.
we are planning on leaving on our "many times delayed" trip in the next few days. checking forecasts and road conditions. will be gone a week or two depending on how things go.

anyone watching the ice skating? the women's skating was lovely. the Russian lady who won did an amazing program as did the Korean lady. quite the fuss over who should've gotten gold.

Good afternoon ladies,

Wednesday was a long day and was very sad. It was nice to see all my cousins just wish under different circumstances.

Been really relying on p90x3 workouts the past few days since they are only 30 minutes and I haven't had much time lately for longer or doubles. I'll have to say I really feel I am still getting a great workout. Last night was The Challenge which was pushups and pullups for the entire 30 minutes. My upper body was fried at the end. I slept in again today still exhausted from Wednesday so tonight will be another 30 minute workout.

The snow here is ridiculous. My DH spent the day Wednesday while I was gone using a roof rake to get all the snow off the roof. Lots of roofs have collapsed due to the heavy snow. Then while he was doing this heavy snow started coming down and we received 3 inches so he had to clear the driveway after the entire roof. Poor guy. He was not happy.

Deb...that is really odd with the DVD's. At least the seller is going to send a replacement. Can't believe the finale is coming up. Seems like the series just started! I am still one episode behind.

Lynda..I like All out Low impact too. Although it has been a while since I have done it. I'll pull it out over the weekend.

Valerie...glad you figured out what was causes your knee pain before it did some real damage. Funny with root canals. I have had a three. Two did not bother me afterwards but one was unbelievable painful. I had meds for all but only needed for that one time. Guess it just depends on location and what nerves it hits.

Judy...wow 2 hour workout! Usually on the weekends I aim for 90 minutes and I am beat. Good for you with 2 hours!!

Josie...I am with Deb and would love to go to a body pump class. It sounds like a fun but a hard workout. I have no desire to join a gym though so I guess I will just look for a body pump workout. Les Mills? I think I have heard this series is pretty good.

Meeting the girls for dinner on Sunday to celebrate a friend of ours Bday. Our friend passed away 4 years ago but we still go out on her Bday to remember her. There is usually about 10 to 12 of us. It is a really nice time.

Have a great weekend ladies!

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Flextrain (56:36).

If it's any comfort to you, Deb, according to EW, the season finale of DA does not tie up any loose ends to the various plot lines. Instead, it apparently does some sort of mystery letter involving the Prince of Wales. The reviewer sounded irritated.

DH is definitely suffering a nagging cold which I am trying very hard not to catch. I will try to see an Oscar nominated foreign film from Italy this weekend which looks like a reprise of Fellini's La Dolce Vita if I am right after seeing the preview. Also getting some highlights and house max.

Valerie, I watched the skating last night, and IMHO, the Korean was ten times better than the Russian in terms of artistry. Much more moving and beautiful lines to her body. I don't like the anonymity of the judges. I think the fix was in. The Russian had a mediocre short program too.

Any plans for the weekend, ladies?

Lori, I must have been posting at the same time. DH had to clear all the snow off our roof too in fear of ice dams. Today all our snow is turning to slush.

What a nice way to remember your friend! I always spend November 3 thinking about two of my sisters--the birthday of one and the day the other one died. I try to write something in my journal about each of them.

Hi Everyone,

Wednesday I did an hour Spinerval, yesterday I did Kick Max and today I did a very easy, low intensity 90 minute ride and got caught up with Pit Bulls and Parolees. I was really sore from Kick Max and doing the low intensity riding helped me. I felt much better afterwards.

We had an unexpected snow storm early yesterday. We probably got 2-3 inches before it turned to rain. DH had to drive to Ann Arbor 3 times this week to take care of things for FIL. Tuesday night he was there until almost midnight trying to fix FIL's cable TV and internet. He had to go back the next day and replace FIL's cable box. Today FIL got his oxygen set up and DH had to be there for that.

I would love to go to a Body Pump class too. There is a rec center close to here that has classes. I might get a guest pass and try one out.

No special weekend plans here. Just the usual, working at FIL's and will probably take him to dinner.

Good morning, and Happy Weekend

The weather is crazy , not sure whether it wants to be spring or go back to winter. The prediction is that t will be winter again next week.

Valerie, I had an elliptical, but never used it so I sold it to my cousin. I love the treadmill, and have to talk myself into doing any other form of cardio. Glad your fingers and leg are much better, how is DH doing?

Lori, I would not recommend the Les Pump DVD's...I had 3 of them and sold them on Ebay. They are really repetitive and boring. It's so nice that you and your friends still celebrate your friend's birthday.

Garance, I don't think I am going to like the ending of DA if' it leaves you hanging...

Judy, I have to remember to watch that show again.. It really made the time go by when I was flying this past trip. One nice thing about Jet Blue...those on board TV's. I feel for your DH, it would be so much easier if your FIL was closer, or at an assisted living place. I am amazed that the DR's did not push that after his evaluation. I hope he is able to do the whole oxygen process...it's not easy. That may be the deciding factor on him going into assisted living.

Josie, have fun on your ride tomorrow!

I am meeting my friend for breakfast, then HouseMax and making Keegan's food.

Have a great weekend!

Yesterday was not a good day. I got up and my leg was fine. a miracle cure. after walking around for a while doing some minor shopping it got worse and I was limping badly. going up some stairs I felt a "pop" and intense pain in my right calf. so off to be seen at the clinic. tests ruled out DVT and bakers cyst. I have a gastrocenemius tear, a small one. I need to back way off on leg exercises. I have not done anything but ordinary things the last week, actually easy things because my calf kept getting sore. maybe the shoes caused additional strain but.... it may be related to the antibiotics I've needed to take for the infection, which I'm finishing this morning. there are always a list of obscure things that are related to antibiotics which is a good reason not to take them unless definitely needed. but I needed to, so that is the end of that.
so we are not going on our planned trip. I am hugely relieved it's not a DVT or Bakers cyst but still disappointed I will be out of activity for so long. I can do core/ upper body activities and maybe elliptical, yoga, spin bike. it's a big long muscle and what is ok for one person may be painful for the next. I will carefully test it.

I will watch the Olympics, watch it snow here and take it easy for a few days and let discomfort be my guideline. the 2 skaters in question have completely different styles of skating. I thought they each would end up with a gold in different events but it does seem like the judges are favoring jumps and technical aspects more than artistry.

wow you all have a lot of snow! when we have a heavy snow year we need to shovel off our decks (weight) and the entire driveway ...melting will run downhill and the drains get blocked by snow & ice. a lot of work. the roof is pitched enough so that runs /slides off.

judy if FIL can't handle the oxygen process without loads of help from your DH that may finally push him into accepting the inevitable. DH doing too much may become "enabling " behavior.

Oh Valerie, that is awful about your leg! Glad it is not DVT or baker's cyst...I assume they are very serious? I had a friend that had baker's cyst behind her knee I think, not sure what she had to do with it though, it was very painful.

Nice day today, relaxing, just like a Saturday should be. :)

Deb, DVT is serious. bakers cyst is uncomfortable but medically not that serious. if you like to be active, it can cause problems. they form as a result of arthritis in the knee or meniscus problems that cause liquid to collect in the bursa, it pushes out the back of the knee as a cyst. my mother and sister ( just developed one) both have them, and both have had leg DVT's so I was WAY stressed out. this was a strange injury because I didn't do anything to get it. textbooks relate to it almost always caused by trauma and I did nothing like that. only the antibiotics. I did normal things for me, nothing unusual.
I am so glad to be done with antibiotics today. all the common risks are for GI distress but no, I have to develop something weird. and we'll probably never know for sure. then this morning I developed a bruise under my eye... almost looked like a black eye but I did not hit or bump myself in any way. so another call to the on call doc and off for a blood draw. it went OK, bleeding from the stick stopped quickly.

my leg is not bothering me today at all...walking normally but slowly... I am being very cautious not to engage the top calf muscle. I will probably try doing something tomorrow, like an upper body workout.

Be warned..... I have a lot of time and nothing much I can do so I may be even windier than usual.
