Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 2/13

so far, so good re the headcold. DH is better, but we didn't do anything hard yesterday. Yardmax! was a nice day though a bit cold but springlike. because it doesn't get real cold here and is rainy, we get a large annual crop of winter weeds. and moss. every year needs to be cleaned up, in addition to all the tall plants that died back. a good amount of work. I've been taking a little extra vit C and some zinc lozenges in hopes of fending off the virus. Such a PITA when these happen in sequence. can easily lose 2 weeks of fun activities when first one gets it, and then finally the other. DH is getting better and if I'm going to get it, it should be soon.

Missed the dog show, but the papers ran the pics of the winner. strange looking dog!

Hope you have a good trip back Deb. I love the southwest but we haven't been able to go in spring for a long time. usually in fall.

Josie, I've been thinking of you ... the cable keeps running G.I.Jane and it sounds like your training! don't get conned into shaving your head.

meant to include in my previous post.... did the Lower body Blast. I like it. the warm up is tough by itself with some fancy footwork ( for me) on the step but after that it gets back to basics. squats, lunges, lots of partial reps. some fun stuff with paper plates. there's floor work at the end which I did... a few more breaks than the crew. I don't like floor work, but this part was shorter than other workouts. the jumping parts were pretty low impact.

Probably not the best idea but I'm going on a low calorie diet for the next 21 days starting on Monday. I don't ever seem to get much exercise in during tax time. I'm going to try something else. I figure since it's such a short time it can't do much damage. It's higher protein, veg and fruit with no sugar.

I could never do what Josie is doing unless I was in a group.

Hi all,

well I am back. The trip was good, uneventful flying, which is perfect. Tucson was great, beautiful weather but so brown. I never saw anything like that. No grass, except for of course the golf courses. Otherwise all brown and cactus. The weather was wonderful, 80's and sunny. Strange though, the heat creeps up very slowly, it really doesn't get up to the hot temps until around 3:00-4:00 pm, then when the sun sets, it goes back to the 50's and lower as the night goes on.

I am happy about the weather that has been here too, except for the snirt of course. It's a litte windy today, hopefully this will just be wind with no rain or snow. I am off today, I need to rest after this week of travel, meetings, cocktail parties, banquet and more meetings. I ate more food this week than I have in a long time, and not the "good stuff". ugh. Ready to get back on the eating plan.

Garance, I will be going over to the Westminster site where they have all the judging loaded up on videos so you can pick and choose what you want to see. We know a man that owned one of the smooth fox terriers that was shown. He may have taken best in terrier group, but I am not sure. The dog that won was definitely not the normal breed that wins, but that's ok. Did you try to see Max's breed being shown? I always want to see the wires.

Valerie, I hope you are able to avoid what your DH has. Usually by the time I think of taking zinc or other things to avoid getting something it's too late. Lower Body Blast is the kind of workout I avoid. Hate the paper plate stuff, hate low ends and hate floor work. Glad I did not order. I am still on the fence about getting High Reps.

Joan, careful with the low calorie thing, they say that they backfire, and when you stop, you gain it all back and then some. High protein, with lots of vegs and fruit is good, but try to stay around 1400 cals a day.

I should go downstairs and get on the treadmill, but I don't really feel like it. Going to visit my friend, the one that is caring for her Mom at her house. She is 97 and still hanging in there. They have a nurse that comes in every day, but it is very hard.

I will check in later...

Welcome back! yeah, Tucson is dessert all right. If you get out of town up into the canyons it's quite green. I like it for a change but don't think I could live there all the time. I'm allergic to "cultivated" golf course grass so I steer clear of those. allergy meds help some but not enough to make it worth while. Get back on your regular eating plan and you'll be okay.
so far, no cold symptoms and he's pretty well over it. I'm hoping....

somehow I missed westminster this year. I used to come across it on cable but don't remember what channel. was interesting watch while on the treadmill.

Ok I had some sort of revelation yesterday. For me the dread factor comes into play. I know I'll get sore so I put off a workout, dreading my legs and butt hurting for 3 days, and by putting it off I guarantee that when I finally do it, I WILL get sore.

I see there's a critical mass for me with Cathe. If I do 2 workouts a week involving legs/glutes I won't get sore. If I skip for a week, I WILL get sore. Other exercise doesn't matter. I can cycle, run, hike, x-c ski, whatever, it does not replace Cathe for legs and butt and lower body DOMS. Because here I am this morning, with minimal soreness and LBB was not easy but doable. less jumping than it seemed from my preview. the paper plate moves she incorporated arms. made it easier for me and more interesting.

so I'm pretty happy. I finally understand what I need to do. stuck to my diet too. I'll do either high reps of sts total body today. I liked both but did them close together so kind of blurred together in my brain. Joan, hope that works for you. I can't lose anything without exercise. maybe on distilled water only, I might.

Welcome back Deb.

I pretty well have maintenance down pat so I'm not sure I will gain weight back. Just hoping getting off sugar and most carbs for 6 weeks will reduce cravings. It's 3 weeks of low calories and 3 weeks where you don't have sugar or processed carbs and then you slowly add them back in your diet.

I went back to doctor and had eyes examined AGAIN. It was a different doctor and a different prescription. I hope it works this time. At least it's not costing me any more. The two pair were over $1000 and that was with ins.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Squeeze (56 min.).

Welcome back, Deb! I've never been to Arizona, but it sounds like winter desert weather. During the summer, I don't think it cools down as much over night. I don't think English shepherds are show dogs. I did see the Australian Shepherd, though, and there's a strong resemblance between the two. I did watch the terrier group, but I cannot remember which one won. Saw the smooth and wire fox terriers. I thought it was neat that a Scottish deerhound won--they never have, even though they have been in the show since it started back in the late 19th c. Hickory is retiring after her win and headed back to her Virginia home.

Hope you manage to evade that cold, Valerie. No fun, and I agree about the time it takes away from normal activity if first one, then the other gets it and sustains the misery. I am not interested right now in anything by Cathe. I keep looking at my LIC and then it just seems like a lot of trouble. I have all this equipment languishing at the moment. I think I will start STS at the beginning of April--or so I have vowed.

Have a great weekend, everyone! I am going to see The Fighter. I was planning on Blue Valentine last weekend, but went snowshoeing instead last Sunday, and I'm glad I did, because everything is melting here.

Hi Ladies,

This is the end of week six of my program. Today we ran hills. I have not done any running in about 2.5 years but with all the lunges and squats and dead lifts that we have been doing it felt great! I did very well and felt like my old self running :) Our homework for the weekend is 300 push ups and 500 squats. We can break them up between the 3 days that we have off.

I was planning on ridding this weekend, but it seems that it will be raining.

Deb, I lived in Tucson for 3 years. I loved spring time; the dessert comes alive with the most beautiful colors. The cactus bloom in the most brilliant colors you can imagine.

Valerie, I already have short hair, so you can say that I'm already G.I. Jane.

Joan, good luck with your diet.

Hi Garance and Cathy!

Josie

Good afternoon all,

Did Keegan's agility class this morning, he was pretty good, the only mistakes he made were caused by me! It is snowing like crazy here now, we probably got an inch in the last hour.

Josie, I wish I could have been in Tucson when those colors were out. They did have the most fantistice sun sets though. I have a few pics that I will post here, maybe tomorrow. I have to upload them from my phone.

Garance, I didn't realize that the English Sheppard was not an AKC breed. It should be! They added 5 or 6 new breeds this year. I went back to the West Minster site and the man we know that has a kennel about 20 miles south of here did win the best in breed with his smooth coat fox terrier, So exciting! The woman that works for him will probably be whelping the litter that we will be getting the puppy from. Either that or we will be going to Syracuse ( about 3 hours away) where the other litter will be.

Josie you are doing your own version of boot camp!

Joan, reducing sugar and carbs should reduce cravings. Believe it or not, cutting out all wheat and even dairy did it for me. I found that last week, when I was away and eating all that was offered, started my cravings for sugar again. I have to be back on the wagon now before I am on that roller coaster again.

Valerie, if you want to see any specific parts of the West Minster, go to www.westminsterkennelclub.org. They have it so you can select exactly what you want to see. Good job in figuring out how to keep those doms at bay!

Going to read and take a nap! My favorite part of Saturday. HouseMax can wait until tomorrow.

Take care.
