Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 12/8

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did XTrain Ch, Ba, Sh (51:16).

Valerie, I hate it when I get a stiff neck. No fun! Glad you are feeling better. I bet it makes you leery of doing S & G again.

Deb, I received my Doc Martin season 6 yesterday. Haven't watched any of it yet, but the cover says 8 episodes, 2 discs, and approx. 384 min., plus bonus. The picture on the back shows them getting married and mentions a disastrous honeymoon. What fun! Are you feeling better and getting some sleep?

Judy, I did IMax 2 every week for at least 6 mos. I just cycled those six videos from the Intensity series every week. Ahh, to be young again....or at least younger!

Hi to Lori and Josie!

I jerked my head doing the disk slides lying on my back on the floor... it's almost like a whiplash sensation. I'm not worried about doing the S&G workout as I could potentially do the same thing on pretty much any floor exercise. I will back off on any sit up things for a bit though. even driving I need to hold my head against the headrest to avoid jerking, until it's better.

We finished season 5 of Madmen and now are watching the last 3 disks of Breaking Bad. I'd watch Breaking Bad again but probably not MM. somehow I never connect with the characters, and I miss a lot of the logic or sense in a lot of the conversations. Lots of characters pop in and out with long gaps in between, and it's hard to follow sometimes

Reminds me to look at Doc Martin ... I meant to before but not sure I did.

Valerie-do you go to a chiropractor or massage therapist? they might be able to help with your neck. I hope it feels better soon.

Judy, it's a muscle strain and is a lot better this morning. I'm not a user of either. just can't stand anyone touching me. had one massage in my life and could not wait to get done with it. never saw a DC.
anyway, much better today. I've done this before but not often., fortunately. strained every muscle in my neck that holds my head up I used a load of advil, and a hot pack around the back of my neck. and kept quiet for 2 days. going to yoga this morning.

Deb, where are you? hopefully sleeping in and catching up.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did All Out Low Impact Hiit + Core 1 (49:22).

Very cold here, but at least the sun is out. Sounds like we will be getting some snow on Saturday. That could ruin our plans for going to look for a Christmas tree. DH also has a holiday market on Sunday that might have a low attendance.

Deb, are you okay? Is it a computer glitch?

Time to start some holiday baking. DH does not want me to do too much because we will be much smaller this year than last and I tend to eat very little of what I bake.

I'm looking at next Tuesday for the Desolation of Smaug. I also want to see Out of the Furnace and American Hustle (Is that the right title?).

Hi all,

I left work early Tuesday, and stayed home yesterday and today. I am on my third anti-biotic, this one is the one that they determined was the correct one for the bacteria that I had. Finally got the results of the culture, and it showed that the bacteria was resistant to the first two....no kidding! Still have some side effects from the second med.. it's like poison. I will never take that again... Hopefully this will be it once it gets into my system. I still am pretty tired and weak, not wanting to eat etc.

Valerie, what you had sounds very painful. I'm glad it's getting better.

Garance, I got my Doc Martin DVD too, but have not watched any yet either.

Judy, such cute kitties ! :)

Hi to Lori and Josie,

Take care,

Hi ladies!

Crazy busy at work. Actually did not work out today or yesterday! Now that is carzy for me. I am off tomorrow. Go for my mamo in the morning so will get a workout in beforehand. DS is coming tomorrow so the plan is to see the desolation of smaug. Can't wait.

Deb...sounds like this has really been tough for you. Hoping the new medication will have you feeling better. I bet you are tired and weak as this has been going on for a few days now.

Valerie..glad the neck is feeling better. I really like slide and glide cardio portion but always skip the section where you are using your hands on the disc. Just does not appeal to me. I laughed about your massage experience! I am the same way. I went for only one in my life and hated it! Will never have one again. My DH things I am nuts.

What does appeal to me is Imax 2. :D My favorite of the 3. Love everything about it.

Lynda...was 17 degrees when I left for work this morning. I dressed casual today and told my boss it was just to cold to dress up! People always say even casual I look dressy so I am sure I was fine. Snow for us Saturday night/sunday morning. Not looking forward to it.

Judy...loved your kitty pictures! My cats love to lay in everything. If something new comes into the house they have to lay on it. It's rather cute.

Josie..I would love to go to a weight class. I think I would really enjoy it.

Have a great night!

Hi Everyone,

This morning I did Muscle Max. I did the triceps section twice and did the ab work and stretches at the end. It is very cold here too! It's always cold where I work, so now it's really cold. I dressed in layers, I had running tights on under my jeans and 2 long sleeved shirts and didn't feel over dressed.
I have a job interview at a Vitamin Shoppe on Monday. A new one opened up close by and I applied online over the weekend. The manager called me this evening and seemed interested in my experience, so I am cautiously optimistic that my age will not go against me this time.

Lynda- it sounds like we will be getting some snow on Saturday too. I'm the same with baking, if I bake something it's for others, I don't eat much of it. Sunday is FIL's birthday so I might make him some chocolate chip cookies.

Deb-I'm sorry you had to go through that! Some of those antibiotics are really hard to take, I hope you are feeling better soon.

Lori-looks like we are having the same weather too. I really need to move to a warm climate. The kittens are very sweet. They have helped us. I still miss Tiger & Misty :( and always will, but I will always have room in my heart for other kitties too.

Hi to Josie & Valerie,

Judy

Good morning,

I was so close to going to the ER last night, the side affects of this med are bad too. I ate some probiotic yogurt and it seemed to get rid of the nausea, and took some over the counter stuff for the abdominal pain ( which is gas...sorry if TMI :( ). that worked as well so we decided to see how it was overnight. It seems better, low grade headache is still there.

Lori, Good luck with the mamo. We got a lot of snow last night too, and it's 19 degrees now. Warmer than yesterday at least.

Judy, keeping all digits crossed for you with your interview. I would think that experience would count for a lot with that job.

Hi to Garance, Josie, & Valerie,

Stay warm!

Good Morning Everyone,

I'm getting an early start today, doing some grocery shopping and running errands this morning before I do a Spinerval. Then I have a hair appointment this afternoon. We are now supposed to get 6 or more inches of snow starting tonight and ending tomorrow night so I want to get to things done early today.

Deb-I'm sorry you feel so bad. Antibiotics can really disrupt your digestion, as they kill off good bacteria along with bad. Keep eating yogurt and you might want to think about getting a good probiotic supplement to take, especially when you are done with the antibiotics. I'd also get Danactive, it's a probiotic drink that is usually by the yogurt in the grocery store. That is pretty strong one.

I'll check back in later

Judy

Deb, sorry you're having such a hard time. I agree with judy, yogurt with active cultures and probiotics might help get things normalized although it might not settle down until you're done with the antibiotics. so glad the FDA is acting like they might start to get involved in controlling the antibiotics fed to livestock for no good reason. It is accelerating the rate of bacteria becoming resistant to all common antibiotics.

Judy, good luck on the job interview. Hope you can make the move to a more reasonable employer.

Lori, my mamm is next week... I schedule all preventive stuff in December when the schedule is less busy. on S&G they do those disk slides while holding their heads up and I tried to do the same. I will keep my head on the floor in the future, which is more comfortable for me anyway. or maybe I'll skip that one move!

DH had a skin treatment yesterday, his third. he has rosacea( which was getting painful) and sun damage from his childhood in California. the rosacea was getting worse. I had the same thing done about 5 years ago but I had it easier. I got red right after the treatment but nothing visible even the morning after. this is laser, the same clinic, and same person, but he really gets fried! he is swollen like he was attacked by a swarm of bees. he slept semi upright in a lounge chair last night and is feeling awful. we will try to go for a walk later if he feels better. no strenuous exercise for him until tomorrow. this was his last treatment...will see how much improvement he got.

I did 30 on the treadmill last night, and yoga yesterday morning.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Flextrain (56:36).

Deb, the side effects from the antibiotic sound awful. Tummy pain is the worst. I hope you finally shake this infection and feel better soon. I watched the first episode of Doc Martin, season 6. What a mess--funny! The baby playing James Henry is so cute.

Everyone east of the Mississippi is apparently getting snow this weekend. I really hope it's not too much. Very cold here as well, although my office is very nice and warm.

Judy, it would be great if you had a better employer and a better wage than you mentioned having currently. Is this also a part-time job?

Lori, have fun with the hobbits and dwarves! I read that this one is better than the last one, and the dragon is especially good. Love Benedict Cumberbatch who is the voice of Smaug.

Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Good morning ladies!

Yesterday I did KCM shape up. The first workout of the 2. I have it on my xmas list but borrowed it from my friend to try out. I followed up with about 20 mins heavy bag.

Deb...this is the first of her workouts I have ever down. I liked the workout and her style. I know can see why you enjoy them too. She was tough but no dread factor. Moved along quick too. Going to try the second workout today and perhaps a premix of Ride. How are you feeling? Hoping better.

Judy...keeping my fingers crossed for you and hope all goes well with your interview.

Lynda...yeah finally went to the movies. Loved Desolation of Smaug. Then again I LOVE everything lord of the rings and the hobbit. Can't get enough of them.
You will not be dissapointed with Smaug's performance. As usual the movie is long so be prepared for this.

Valerie... Amazing technology and what lasers can do. Poo thing right now. How painfull this must be. I am sure the improvement when all is calmed down will be worth the discomfort now.

8 to 15 inches of snow in my area tonight. Right now it is 18 degrees. Ugh. Fortunately my son came home this weekend to help us out. He is a good boy. :)

Hi to Josie!

.

"Valerie... Amazing technology and what lasers can do. Poo thing right now. How painfull this must be. I am sure the improvement when all is calmed down will be worth the discomfort now."

Ha ha....meant Poor thing!

Good morning,

Feeling better, not 100%' but much better. It,s the 30th anniversary of the movie "AChristmas Story" and 5cast members are in town to celebrate the event at a local theater where they will show the movie. Fists there will be a Christmas parade down Main Street with the cast riding in the original fire truck that came to rescue Flick when he got his tongue stuck on the pole. Then they will have a question/answer session in the theater before they show the movie. John got a couple of tickets as a gift from one of his staff and he is really looking forward to it.

Judy, thanks for the info. I have been looking into using some type of probiotic and now I am sure I will once this is over. I actually give them to the dogs. It cleared up Kylee,s acid reflux problem.

Valerie, sorry about your DH,s reaction to the skin treatment. I hope it clears up soon.

Garance, I plan on watching some of Doc Martin tonight with a blanket and a couple of dogs on my lap.

Lori, hope all went well with the mamo. Are you going to see the Hobbit movie in IMAX? John wants to see it but I am not really a fan of that type of stuff. I went to see the first one with him and although the effects were great the rest kind of dragged for me. I couldn't wait for the end, only to find out it didn't,t really end and there was going to be another movie. WHAT??.

It,s 12 degrees here right now. Brrrrr..

Stay warm!

Ha Deb... my exact reaction to the LOTR movie! oh please, is it over YET?? I'm trying to recall, I think I was okay with the first one, but then there was something else ... maybe an extended version? I could not wait for it to end. DH liked it though, so I will put the Smaug movie on the queue and try again.

I need some thoughts on spin bikes. I tried pedal Power yesterday, the 35 min premix because I haven't been on the spin bike in a long time. I am a fairly strong rider on road bike & mt bikes, but I cannot "get" the spin bike to save my life.
when I stand up, I slow down dramatically and can't move my legs faster. I feel like a ton of bricks, need to lean forward onto the bars regardless of how little or large resistance is on the flywheel, & feel like all the work goes to my calves and low back( which are both screaming) with close to zero involvement of my quads/ glutes.
when I sit down, I speed up, my legs go faster, and I can feel my thigh muscles kick in. as soon as I stand, the thigh area disengages. I never ride my other bikes standing up. never. I am much more powerful sitting. Any ideas?

DH feels OK now, but looks like he was beaten up. he gets a mouse under each eye, and the rest of his face is lumpy and swollen. he tries to sleep semi upright in a chair to decrease swelling but it doesn't work 100%. it takes a week to decrease enough so he can go out in public without feeling conspicuous. then we wait and see how much improvement. my rosacea is essentially gone, and it's been 5 years since my treatments.

Just a quick reply to Valerie-It took me quite awhile to get used to standing up on the bike. I had it pretty well mastered on my old spin bike and now I am trying to get the hang of it on the new one. For me, if I am sitting and riding at a medium resistance (in Spinervals it's tension of 3 on scale of 1-5 with 5 being the hardest) and have to stand I need to increase the tension a little. If I don't I feel like I lose control. Sometimes I just stay seated when the standing portion comes on. If you want to try and get your thigh muscles to engage when you are standing you can try standing while pedaling and keep moving the tension up until you feel a shift to your thigh muscles. Also, when I stand, I usually stand straight up with just a small lean forward on the handlebars, like if I was riding outside and standing. I don't "hover" like they do in most spinning classes as that bothers my low back.

Hi Ladies,

I feel like a wuss now that I have read the temperatures that you ladies are dealing with. I was supposed to do a 36 mile ride in Pasadena, but I chickened out because it was 35 degrees this morning :). So I went spinning instead. I will be riding tomorrow locally an will be doing 35 miles.

Deb, I'm glad that you are feeling better. Christmas story is my favorite movie, you are so lucky.

Valerie, thank you so much for your donation to ALC. it is greatly appreciated.

Judy, good luck on the job interview.

Garance, you are making me want to buy Flextrain.

Hi to Lory!

Josie

Thanks for the thoughts Judy. I've had trouble with posture since day 1. Dh uses clip in shoes, I use toe baskets, so I need to detach/attach pedals each time, and then try to get the seat adjusted right. he sets the seat higher and further back and even though I marked it, it wasn't right . maybe some other adjustment I didn't notice. I need to allow an extra 20 minutes to get it all reset, and since DH uses it more often, I need to do that every time.

I'm unable to work up a sweat because I was so uncomfortable, and could not get my legs going faster. I will try staying seated and pedaling harder in that position. I was thinking it sounded crazy that my thighs were not engaged at all.

You're welcome. Josie, I think 35 degrees is cold for riding. I wear windblock tights even at 45-50 degrees. I wear padded underwear. much more flexible and cheaper than trying to find padded bike tights. ski goggles help if your eyes tear. a helmet cover. I wear xc ski gloves rather than bike gloves.
