Pentagenarians & Beyond! W/B 12/7

Hi Deb, Linny, Josie, and Joan--

This morning I did Kelly C-M's 30 minutes of weights for bis, tris, and shoulders plus 2 miles with Leslie (60 min. total).

Deb, I have watched House a few times and really like it. I just haven't been keeping up with it this year. The Christmas walk is an annual tradition, where all of the merchants stay open on Saturday night and have specials for Christmas shopping. They close down the main street and there are street musicians singing and playing Christmas songs. There's also a big fundraiser where the merchants donate items to a raffle and people buy entries and browse through the offerings in one of the college's gyms. One year we won a 50 dollar certificate for a really good local restaurant. Another year a basket with wine and cheese. It's also just fun to run into friends and catch up with their news if you haven't seen them in awhile.

Josie, so sorry the east coast college didn't work out for your daughter. The first years I have been teaching this year seem to have really bonded and have become very close friends.

Joan, that room sounds fantastic, even if the water is cold in the winter. We have a big addition, too, and it's great for parties, but this year we decided it was too much work and expense. I'm a little sad--but also feel some relief about the decision.

Good luck, Linny, on your party!

Back to my papers! The late ones are trickling in.

Hi everyone,
This is not my official check in I was just putting in my meals on nutrition calculator and stopped to read.
Bev - It's funny but it was me who suggested I was going to use what I use as 60%. That was before I found out it was somewhat easy to test.
But to use this method, if you usually use 8lbs you would divide by .6 and get 13.3. You would then enter anything between 12lb and 15lb on the 1rm page with 10-12 reps. It then calculates 1rm. This assumes you don't lift as heavy as you can, which was exactly what I thought I did.
10-.6=16.6 As you can see I don't have divide symbol.
12 =20
15 =25
20 =33.3
If you play around with the 1rm calculator you can get 60% to be anything you want by adjusting rep or weight.

Good Morning Ladies,

I will not be wroking out today. My DH is leaving tomorrow to pick up our DD.
I will be doing the B & G in the AM.

Garance, My DD did make a lot of friends and I'm sure that she will keep in touch with them. She got accepted to LMU (Loyola Marymount University) which is about 3 blocks from our house and more expensive, but as long as she is happy we are happy.

JoanC. I would love to have a pool! I used to be in the swimming team in college.

Deb, I have seen House a couple of times and liked it, but I don't want to get hooked on another show. I'm hooked on the Biggest looser and I'm glad that it's almost over.

Linny, I'm gald that you got some rest last night and that you feel better. I love eggnog and have not bought any because I would drink the whole thing. Spiked or not.

Have a great evening!

Josie

Hi Ladies:
What a mess outside.Everything is iced over, not looking forward to ride into work tonight. One of the aides I work with was upset this morning, her brother got into an accident on the way to pick her up.Damn ice.
Deb:Census is how many patients we have in house. There is a fine line between how many patients per how much staff on the clock. If I have 30 patients on my unit I will have 2 nurses,if there are 29 usually only one.Sounds like Canada is having weather better than us.The weatherman said it was snowing in Mississippi. What the heck is going on? I have never seen House but my DD loves that show.
Garance:That Christmas walk sounds like fun.My DH and I use to go to First Night on New Years Eve and walk around to shops. Can't do that anymore with this hive thing. My Raynaunds was so bad this morning 4 of my fingers were numb and purple.I quess I have to wear them gloves as soon as I go outside.
JoanC:My DH is a building contractor/carpenter and is starting to feel the wear and tear on his body.I hope he can continue till he is 68.
Josie:Glad to hear your DD will be close by.Too bad about the expense though.I buy Mr.Boston creamy eggnog at the liquor store. Its about 15%alcohol and very yummy.
Its my last night to work for the week, yippee.I may be going for a job interview down the street tomorrow.DH is getting tired of worrying about me driving so far to work in this weather.~Linny~

TGIF Ladies!

...and day after TGIT for Linny!

Good Morning!

No workout today:(...I woke up at the usual time, and just could not get myself up...DH took Keegan out and Kelsey and I just went back to sleep until the "work" time alarm rang. Oh well, 5 times this week is better than what I have been doing. I have gained 9 pounds back from the 24 I lost last year...I have some work to do on the diet that's for sure..

Garance, that Christmas walk sounds great. I hope the weather cooperates for you!;)..

Joan, thanks for the info on 1RM! I thought I may use the 60% method but it doesn't seem to work that well...If I use 8 pounds to do the normal 12 reps of an excercise, and do the calculation, 8 pounds is 60 % of 13.3 pounds...I entered 13 pounds with 12 reps and it says my 1RM for that excercise is 19. The chart says that 60% of tht would would be 11 pounds...which is kind of off from 13.3...a big difference ..? Sorry for all the questions etc, this whole thing with Cathe and this series, and all the waiting and now this whole thing you have to do to "get the most out of the series" has me really pissed off ( as if you can't tell!). I hardly have the time or energy to do a regular workout, let alone have to test over 100 excercises to get these number. Some people are using this as their workouts which may be the way to go.

Josie, how excited you must be to have your DD home and then so close by !

Linny, I think a job that close would be great! would it be the same hours as the one you have now?

Have a great day ladies!

Hi ladies,
Didn't do anything yesterday. Felt great in morning, then horrible in afternoon. Feels like flu. I just got up 10:00 am, I even told them I couldn't take Elliot today because of the fever. I think that's when you are contagious. She'll probably get it anyway, but at least I got to sleep in.
Bev I really think you should do 1rm as a work out, at least for upper body. Then for legs I tested a few of them before a dvd wo. I realized I don't want to use as heavy as I can go on legs. It seemed to hurt my knees. The first time through STS I will just use what I normally use for legs and in second and third cycles I'll maybe increase wt.
Josie - I think it's great dd will be close. My baby boy (31) is in Portland , OR and we are lucky to see him once a year. He isn't even coming home for Christmas.
Linny - My builder fell off roof (not on my job) and broke many of the bones in his body about fifteen years ago. He finds if he keeps active he doesn't notice the pain.
garance - Who is Kelly? I don't know that dvd. Why no Cathe until sts?
I don't think I will do any wo today, but we'll see how it goes.

Hi Deb, Linny, Josie, and Joan--

This morning I did Lauren's kettlebell workout (45 min.).

According to DH, we escaped the freezing rain and power outages all around us because we live in a valley that held in the warmth. Boy are we lucky--it sounds like Albany, Troy, Rensselaer to the east have a major power outage.

Deb, do you know anything about getting packages from Canada? I bought this sweater from a place in Banff and they gave me a tracking number that just plain stops in Toronto and it looks like the package hasn't crossed the border. Getting worried--since it was so expensive and what my son wanted for Christmas.

Joan, that's right--I have decided not to do Cathe until STS comes out because I am as pissed-off as Deb about the length of time it's taking and weirded-out by all the so-called preparation you have to do in order to get it right. I think--and this is if these DVDs ever, ever arrive--I will just try them out the first time with what I have. The way things are going, I may be too old to use them by the time they arrive. I have been doing Kelly Coffey-Meyer's DVDs for about a month now, mixed in with 4 miles with Leslie and one day of Lauren each week. As I said earlier, I am not going to be a lemming the next time Cathe announces another presale ("just keep repeating, I AM NOT A LEMMING, I AM NOT A LEMMING"). Usually I am on the bandwagon the first day.

Sounds like you really got hit with the ice up in New Hampshire, Linny. DH is wondering if I should get spikes for the bottom of one pair of boots to make sure I don't slip and hurt my knees again. He went out this morning dressed head to toe in his new yellow rainsuit (I told him he looked like a big banana!) and his spikes. Scared the hell out of the cows with all the crunching and the slapping of his rubber outfit. Made me laugh!

Back to my final 3 papers.

Good Morning Ladies,

I did the B & G leg blast and I wanted to throw up when I finished. I was soaking wet and my legs felt like wet noodles. I will do it again next week because I feel that it will really help my tush.

This weekend, I will be walking and spiinning on Saturday and just spinning on Sunday.
We are probably going to get our tree and go shopping and go out to lunch with my DD so that we can catch up.

Have a nice weekend everyone!

Josie

It's Saturday!

Good Morning!

Just a quick drop by....lots of things on the list to do today!

Garance, what is the tracking number they gave you? Is it a FedEx Ground number or UPS?.. only 3 papers left..." Garance is doing the happy dance!":)

Joan, I know I will break down and do some of the testing. I was thinking of taking the excercises from the first DVD and using the testing of some of them tomorrow as my weight workout. I will just alternate upper and lower body to put some time in between.

Josie, Yay to you for doing that leg workout...I can understand why you would want to throw up!

Linny, hope you are having a good weekend

Deb

Hi Deb, Linny, Josie, and Joan--

Today was my day off, so I cleaned house and will be going to the Christmas walk in a few minutes.

I would be absolutely done with grading if I didn't have one student who has still not turned in her seminar paper. Grrr!

Deb, I received the package today. It was sent by post, but the tracking number kept saying it was in Toronto until suddenly today it said it was delivered! So much for tracking numbers. It's a beautiful sweater, though, and I am certain DS will love it. I am done shopping for Christmas.

I wonder if Linny has power in New Hampshire. DH says New Hampshire was the hardest hit. If you are there, Linny, let us know!

Well--I'm off. I will check in tomorrow.

Good evening everyone,
I finally felt good enough to do 3.25mi on treadmill. Unfortunately, it was more like a stroll than a walk but at least I did something.
I lost 3lbs from the fever, but probably will gain it all back. No drinks last night at dinner. I saved it for company Christmas party tonight. I might need it. New favorite drink is Chocolate Covered Strawberry. It is strawberry vodka, Baileys and Godiva choc. liq. The mixer is cream.
Hope everyone has a good weekend.
Joan
