Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 12/6

Hi everyone--

This morning I did ba, rear delts, and bis (52:28).

Valerie, I remember a thread here ages ago about subluxating (sp?) patellas, and I recall someone who did use some kind of brace to hold the patella in place when exercising. Not at all sure if this is what you have or if a brace wouldn't just be a way of compensating for what's wrong rather than fixing it. Anyway, I hope you find out soon how best to proceed. Seems like a really bad time of the year for WW to screw up its website. This is usually when people worry about the 5 lb. weight gain between Thanksgiving and New Year's.

Lori, does Chester snore along with DH? Snoring is the worst. Maybe Deb's solution will work. I think I have seen those Tempurpedic beds where you can actually have one side higher than the other.

Deb, I will have to take a look at the 4ds weights again too. I am getting a little bored with the RWH weight workouts which I have been doing a lot. I just keep hoping the ICE workouts will arrive soon. I will report on the Jessica Smith ones too when they arrive.

Josie, I love Zumba.

Hi to Judy.

Lynda, I'm cautious about doing too much until I see the therapist. My thoughts are maybe I've over developed the outer part of the quad with so much riding. it's become stronger than the VMO ( inner thigh) muscle. maybe my riding position? my anatomy? will see what the eval shows. cycling is recommended though as a good exercise to do.
I remember the therapist checking for muscles firing after I had my ACL surgery because that dictates how to proceed with therapy. I will switch to elliptical/ spin bike/ treadmill. too wet and nasty for outdoor riding anyway. I was trying to check for VMO muscle myself and can't feel much. I will go look over on open forum to see what I can find.

WW membership has dropped off with so many free programs around. they're transitioning to something new. expect it had to do with oprah though a lot of the updates will show up on my next weigh in day, Friday. my phone and ipad don't work but the desktop is sort of functional now... just don't know how to use it efficiently yet. I don't know why they had things fall apart at this time of year though. imagine it took longer than they thought.

returned the Thule bike rack and got a Yakima. It is much more solid and buckles are serious!. we bought a bar to help suspend mt bikes from the rack, and it's very nice. $40. may use it to hang the bikes in the garage too. I'd never seen one before. I'll try to post a link and picture. makes loading the bikes a lot easier.
https://www.yakima.com/tubetop

works really well! if your bike frame doesn't hang well on a rack, this is the answer.

ETA ... did a 40 min spin premix from x-train, burn sets bi's and tris, core 1, and some leg lift type things ( not hard) that targeted VMO muscle. about an hour and a half total. when I ride, I am aware of my outer quad working hard, but not the inner part. both legs feel the same, so neither feels like inner quad is much engaged. DH went off and did a mt bike because he wants to ride his new bike. I opted out, my bike is needing repair/replacement. he really likes his new one, shifts so much better and brakes have a hydraulic assist, so no hand cramps from hanging on to them for miles.

Good evening ladies!

This morning was Supercuts. Another one I used to do and have not done in ages. I had forgotten how this one just moves quickly from exercise to exercise. No workout tonight. Heavy package day at the office so very tired. I consider this my second workout!

Valerie...you are smart to take it easy a bit until you see the therapist. Knowing you and how active you are you will have this behind you in no time. That bar looks very useful. I read over on VF others are struggling with the WW transition. Hope they get the bugs worked out soon, so many rely on this system.

Deb...let me know if the link does not work. That sounds like a great idea with the pillows under the mattress. DH always snores. Sometimes louder than others. Last night was loud! Funny you sleep on the couch too. I have a HRM but never use it. I should get in the habit of using it because I would love to know my approx. calories burned. I am going to look at 4ds too.

Lynda...lol! Chester does not snore...some dogs do but thankfully he does not. He was just being a pain and wanting to go out and then trying to jump on the bed. I finally gave up and let him sleep at the foot of the bed. He slowly crept up and ended up with his head on my pillow inbetween me and Bob. Of course he lays on top of the covers so I could not even pull them over me. I was not happy.

Hi to Judy and Josie!

Good morning,

Wow, I slept until 6:20 today, the latest I have slept in years. It felt really good. I didn't even hear John get up with the dogs. Now I feel like half the morning is gone. LOL.

Lori, thanks for the link,...I put it on the desktop of my iPad....maybe will try that one today. I also downloaded her full body weight workout...definitely try the pillow trick...I took 2 old bed pillows, slipped them in between the mattress and box spring just to give a little angle...it was like a miracle! I remember nights when I came down to sleep on the couch, and could still hear him snoring from downstairs! Ugh...Yes, he still sometimes snores but it stopped it for the most part. Has something to do with the nasal passages I guess and the incline opening them somehow.

Valerie, I would wait for the PT session to get your exercises and the limit of what you can or should not do...I keep thinking it has to be related to the riding....will check to see if that program is available on Prime....I know people like Fitbits...actually I gave one to John for his birthday and he loves it....but I did hear that the HRM part is not very accurate. I like the fact that you can see your sleep patterns with it though. Your new bike rack looks so simple and easy to use....I am not sure why we got one that is so big, complicated and was really expensive! I think we were taken by the bike store people..:(

Lynda, I saw the write up and clips of the 4 DVD set you ordered, it looks good and a lot of variety in workouts.

Judy, new KCM's are shipping today!

Hi Josie!

Not sure what is up for today, it's John's day off...he said he probably won't go fishing...so maybe we can do something here..or errands....

TAke care,

Hi Everyone,

Monday I did a short spinerval and a segment of ab hits. Tuesday I did Muscle Endurance and yesterday I did a longer spinerval.
I can't believe the weather here! It's in the 50's and supposed to reach 60 this weekend. DH and I are planning to get a bike ride in on Saturday.
I started an Ed2Go class yesterday, "Becoming a Veterinary Assistant" . There are 3 classes in the series, all 6 weeks long. I think I am going to enjoy the class and maybe it will lead to a new job opportunity. It would be different than anything I have done before, but I think I would like it.

Deb-thanks for the KCM update. I guess we will get to try her new workouts before we get ICE.

Lori-I haven't done step recently. I used to go to step classes in the early 90's and I loved it then. I have Cathe's Basic Step and will need to start there and see if I can do it again. I'll take a look at her live step classes too. I would love to add some of Cathe's harder step workouts into my routine.
Supercuts is one of the XTrain workouts that I haven't done yet. I might try to do it next week. Heavy lifting at work definitely counts as a workout!

Valerie-I second what Deb said about the Fitbit HRM. I tried out a Fitbit Surge watch last year. I wore it along with my Garmin HRM and did a bike workout. The heart rate on the Fitbit was way off, too low. Good luck with your knee issue, I hope you get it resolved soon.

Lynda-I hope we get the ICE workouts soon too. It looks like it may be after Christmas before we see them.

Hi to Josie!

Judy

that's what I've heard about fitbit. heart rate is what I want the most. nice it will count steps for you but if you ride a lot like we do, my understanding is that if your arms aren't swinging, it won't count as activity. I had a pedometer once, but it never worked well either. I will look for another chest strap. I like to make sure I'm working hard enough but not too hard. right now I have to keep re-pressing "heart rate" on equipment, it doesn't transmit continuously anymore. so it's probably a slowly dying battery. I used to have a watch that went with the strap. died years ago.

Deb, great if that was the rack.... no, it's an add on that simulates a straight top tube on a bike. the rack arms support the bike by going under the top tube. DH's bike has a down slanted top tube and when you put a bike on it, the rear wheel is way up in the air, and the front of the bike down. if you put bar on the bike, it hangs level on a bike rack.
http://www.rei.com/product/813868/yakima-kingjoe-pro-3-bike-trunk-rack
this is the rack. we will get another of those top tube things for my bike when I get it. it arrived at the shop yesterday but wasn't put together yet. It has been very wet and windy here, flooding all over. I want to check out the bike when it's not pouring rain. If you read reviews on racks, it's clear many people are having problems fitting newer style bikes on racks.
Don't assume you were 'taken". bike racks need to fit the car model. they need to keep several bikes secure at 70 mph over thousands of miles. if a bike falls off, it would destroy the bike, maybe cause a wreck or injuries if another car hits it.
hitch mounted racks are nice. don't have to lift the bikes high. many swing away so you can still open the tailgate, they are more like $450. we used our old rack on many different cars over years. finally wearing out.
wow 6:20. a record sleep in time.
Judy, I bet you would love that job. the vet assistants at the clinic I use get to do a lot of things. my BIL and SIL are both vet assistants and make good wages.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did Jazzercise Dance Hiit (48:00).

Deb, I get up at 6:15 everyday and think I could easily sleep another hour, which I do and then some on Saturday mornings.

I had the temporary filling replaced with a more permanent one this afternoon. The dentist keeps saying I should crown it pretty soon, but the endodontist wants to wait 3 mos. before doing that to make sure there is no damage (like a crack) to the tooth. Any thoughts on this?

Judy, it's in the 50s here, too. I think that sounds like a great new career idea for you. I know I would be too squeamish to handle some of the things you have to do as an assistant to a vet, so I applaud your gutsiness.

We went to get our Christmas tree this afternoon. So strange because it didn't feel like winter at the tree farm at all. At least we don't have a lot of snow to melt off the tree before bringing it in.

Valerie, they gave us pedometers at Rancho La Puerta, and they seemed to work fine there. I gave it to my husband, who wanted to see how many steps he took in just an ordinary day, but it seemed to double the number when he was testing it.

Good evening ladies!

This morning was supposed to be RWH low impact 2 but I had the time so I did both 1&2. Great way to start the morning. Tabatacise is on the schedule for tomorrow. The rotation calls for 3 rounds but I will do all 5.

Deb...wow 6:20! That is late for you. This weekend I plan on trying the pillow under the mattress. I am not even going to tell him. Will be curious if he notices. My DH and I loved our Fitbits but they both stopped working in about 6 months. Was very disappointed.

Valerie...been dry and unseasonably warm here. I think it is becuase I had my snowtires put on early. Always the case. When do you start PT? I can only imagine how many racks you have gone thru over the years. Why are racks not fitting newer bikes? I think I missed this if you posted it.

Judy...that is awesome to be taking that class and who knows what opportunities are out there! Although, not sure I could work with pets. I would end up taking any animal home that needed one! I really liked Supercuts. Going to try and fit this one in more often. Weights used are 8 or 10lbs but it moves along with no breaks.

Lynda...I think waiting 3 months is a good idea. It will go by quick and it is always good to be sure. We have an artifical tree. It is actually a 6ft optical one. Needed one with no string lights. The cats kept chewing the wires. Having the optical gives the illusion of lights with out all the wires. Works well for us.

Hi to Josie!

Lori, a lot of bikes, especially mountain bikes, have bigger wheels now ( 29 ") and thus bigger frames. to keep bikes comfortable to ride, the top tube, the tube between the seat post to under the handlebars, is being curved downward, especially on women's bikes. they call them step through frames. but then they hang very crooked on most bike racks, one wheel pointed down and the other up. we bought the top tube adapter to put on the bike, then we hang it on the rack. it works well. I think this is only our 4th rack.

we also put on winter tires, and it's just been raining non stop. 52 degrees. it avoids the mad scramble if it actually gets cold or if we want to drive into the mountains.
I start PT next wed unless they get a cancellation sooner.

Happy Friday!

Even though I am retired, I still love Fridays. I think after all the years working, it will be a while before I get that out of my system. :).

Judy, we have the same weather prediction here...some say it may reach 65 by Monday! I really hope so. The longer this goes on, the closer we are to spring. That is so great that you are taking that course! That sounds like a great field to get into, lots of jobs available, there are so many vets nowadays. I am sure we will have the new KCM's before ICE. I wanted to ask over at the other forum why they can't find a replicator on the east coast? That would cut down on time, not to mention the expense of shipping all those DVD's to NJ just so they can ship them out again. Oh well, they will get here eventually right? I listed to Cathe's talk from the Sleep workshop yesterday and went out and bought a 75cm stability ball to use at my computer desk instead of a chair....wish me luck! I hope I don't fall on my head....:). Have you listened to any of them yet? I can't get the PDF document to print. to take notes :(.

Valerie, I still stick with Polar for HRM's. Actually have had 3 or 4 of them, and right now am using the chest strap ( the hard version) from my first one with the watch from my last one. The original chest strap has lasted the longest, still going strong. I don't even think they make that version any more. The bad part about those is that you supposedly had to send it back to Polar to have the battery changed, but I think there are people on YouTube that show you how to do it yourself now. I agree on the bike rack...ours is a really good one, but very difficult to use. John looking at stationary bikes again, I told him he has to clean his area of the basement before I will buy one for him...:).

Lynda, John says to go with the Endodontist, he said he usually waits 6 months, but at least 3, and try not to limit chewing on hat side as much as possible, The reason is that you don't want to get a crown, and then have to do a root canal through the crown...he said "good advice from the Endodontist". I can imagine buying your tree was like getting one in the summer....strange.

Lori, you need to do 2 pillows, or whatever number you need to raise the whole top, including your side. We have a queen sized bed...so 2 pillows work. I never heard of an optical tree...mm....going over to Google when I am done here...LOL...

Hi Josie!

Anyone have any fun plans for the weekend?

Take care,

Deb, I will look into the u tube video. I have 2 straps at least. they still work, but I suspect could use new batteries. if I can do it myself, that would be terrific.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did Flextrain (56:36).

Deb, I had the root canal, so I wouldn't have to do that again, crown or no crown. The endodontist recommended waiting because when you do have a root canal, it can lead to a weakening of the tooth and a crack. If you put a crown over that, then you have the possibility of infection, with bacteria getting in. I will definitely wait. It does seem counterintuitive to have a replicator all the way on the other side of the country, but maybe they have had better success with that replicator. Wasn't there one series awhile ago that had a lot of problems? Maybe that was a more local replicator, and Cathe doesn't want to try them again.

Lori, in Supercuts, aren't there some windmills? I think they are deceptively hard, and I feel a bit twingy in my back when I do them. I decorated our tree this morning. DH set it up last night and we put on the lights, but he leaves the rest for me to do, which is fine, because I like to remember where the ornaments came from, especially the ones made by my boys. We have one called "the barf cookie," because it's a brown circle of construction paper with bits of macaroni and seeds glued on. Tuck that one in the back for sure!

Annual Christmas party on Sunday for Rural Lands, and I think I will finally go see Mockingjay, part 2. Should be relatively deserted now that it has been out for awhile.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Well... I didn't miss a thing here because I figured it HAD to be the calendar...gotta get that here before years end.

we did a ride today. 26 miles about 45-50 degrees but semi sunny. first nice day in a loooong time. flooding flooding, landslides, trees down quite the mess....
we have 2 days next week that look decent and poor DH... he has his prep day and then his colonoscopy day taking both of them.

Deb-I listened to Cathe's talk and really enjoyed it. I didn't print out the pdf or take notes. That's a great idea about the stability ball. I should try that too.
