Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 12/6

Had my mammogram today. the first one with the pacer. Made no difference at all. It wasn't even slightly uncomfortable. whew! now as long as the results come back good I'll be happy.

I got ambitious and did disk 1 STS on tuesday. wow, more pushups than I remembered and I definitely didn't do all of them. Did as many as I could and then to the knees. I didn't record how I did the series before but I think I repeated the first 3 disks for at least 2 weeks before went forward and will likely do that again. I didn't remember how tough this was. Wow.
Wed we went on 6 mile hike, nothing real difficult except there were big patches of ice that required some careful maneuvering. finally put on the stabilicers(boot traction devices) and that made it easier. a nice day , sunny and cold.

wow, that cheesecake sounds great. I'm been having Skinny cow ice cream bars (100 cal) for dessert and although I'd prefer cheesecake, these are good too.

do ya'll know anything about jillian michaels "30 day shred"? sounds like a combination of the firm and cathe.

well, i will say about WW, that i am not hungry, and i still have 5 pts left today. i am eating much better than i have in a long time. so, we will jsut see what happens.

today i did jiggle free arms, and an back routine w/really heavy wts. stephanie makes killer upper body workouts.

thanks josie, just been really busy

yeah, i love CDF too! it is fun

deb, as of now i am enjoying doing WW. and, i'm really not hungry. the first day i was, but now i guess i have evened out my eating and kinda figured it out.

Good evening,

Another low eating day-1301 calories. I wasn't going to do any exercise today. The cat threw up a hairball into my walking shoes. They were my comfortable old ones. I remembered I had purchased a new pair a few months ago so I walked 3 miles on treadmill. They will probably give me a blister. I didn't like them at all. But they are pretty.:p

Cathy 30 Day Shred has three 20 minute workouts. Each one contains
one 2-minute warm up, three 6 minute circuits featuring a 3-2-1 system
3 minutes of strength(not very heavy), 2 minutes of cardio and 1 minute of abs. Finally one 2 minute cool down.

Tomorrow is house cleaning day so I should use a lot of calories.

Elliot was feeling a lot better today. She got a nap in(but not me).

Joan

Finally Friday

Good morning,

I slept until 5:00, now just waiting for the coffee to finish. It's still very cold and windy here .

Garance, glad your gift made it! I am very surprised though. Is sushi the raw one or is that sashimi..I can't keep them straight, since I will not eat either..

Josie, that is great about being able to ride your bike on your vaction next week...I could ride our snow blower...;)..

Valerie, a 6 mile hike in ice and snow is a great workout..do you have a HRM to count calories burned? Hope all turns out well with the mamo too. I like the WW chocolate ice cream bars. Very good but not cheap!

Cathy, I have heard about the Jillian Michaels thing but no details...are you planning on getting it? I keep toying with trying the online WW...went to the website last night to just look around..

Joan, good job on the calories. LOL about the cat and your shoes..!:D

Have a good day!

Too funny.... what are the chances the cat picks your shoes to upchuck on... I do think cats know exactly what they're doing though... it's payback for something.

Yesterday ended up being a day off. It was a busy day with lots of stops and shopping. Our weather might take a turn for the worse this weekend and I wanted to get the shopping done. when I got home it was 4:30 and I was tired and had to make dinner yet. so no wo. today I'll rebound with STS #2 and some cardio. I don't remember if disk 2 is upper or lower body will find out when I pop in the disk.

We've had a strange stretch of weather. very much colder than usual for us, not much snow in the mountains. started out with heavy snows but then got warm and rainy and washed away much of it, especially at lower elevations. then it got very cold. so hiking was basically long stretches of dry dirt & rocks with spaced out sections of ice where streams crossed the trail. not great cardio... icy sections slow you WAY down and there were quite a few.

Josie, I was thinking about your bike riding trip . DH and I really miss riding... too cold to ride here now. It's possible, it's just not fun.

cathy.... my neighbor has been doing WW for about a year now and is having success. Last we talked she'd lost 35 lbs. slowly and without totally disrupting her life. been able to go on vacations and maintain. She told me the WW ice cream bars were a lifesaver. I tried skinny cow ones and like them a lot. one is enough, a nice chocolaty treat for 100 cal. the prices are all over the map ... $7 a box at one store, $5 at another, and Target grocery had them for $3 something.
I also like fruit crisps. For some reason a tiny dish of pear or apple crisp keeps me happy for not too many calories. For me a key thing is having a small sweet every day at dinner. If I try to quit altogether I get very. bad. cravings.

Hey Valerie,

How do you make that small dish of crisp that is not too calorie laden? It is one of my favorites!

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did (sorta did!) Cardio Barre Advanced workout (55 min.). Yikes! I couldn't keep up through all of the reps. This one is HARD, but I will get it at some point. No impact. I am also sore from the STS back and bis I did yesterday.

Joan, too funny about the cat! And I agree with Valerie--cats seem to know precisely what they are doing and why and they also don't feel that anything they do is worthy of punishment. Sounds like you have the calories under control. Have you stopped eating out?

Deb, I had 5 pieces of raw fish on little rice mounds with a bit of wasabi and pickled ginger and a California roll. I love yellowfin tuna!!

Josie, that shopping sounds like a real treat. I love retro so a 40's dress would be my choice too. I like to sew Vogue Vintage patterns.

Cathy, that's great news about WW. I've never tried it. Do you have to cook separately for yourself??

Wow is it cold here today. The wind is howling.

I'll try to find my usual crisp recipe from the Cooking Light website. I cut the recipe in half, there are only 2 of us and I'd rather have it prettyfresh. I go a little heavy on the fruit and use ripe to over-ripe fruit, pears or apples. I keep servings small. we get a good 6 servings from a half recipe unless DH gets the munchies and kills it off early!

I don't like artificial sweetener. Occasionally in diet 7 or diet coke when the carbonation hides it, but no fake sugar ..rather have a small serving of real. Calorie count not especially low... this is not "diet food" but a small serving satisfies me and I don't feel deprived. I save it for occasional and keep the rest of dinner on the low side. the picture shows it with ice cream but I skip that.

Harvest Pear Crisp

Cinnamon-spiced pears bake under a crunchy streusel topping in this easy dessert. Assemble the dish ahead of time, and put it in the oven when guests arrive. Or bake it earlier in the day and serve it at room temperature. Serve with low-fat vanilla ice cream.

6 cups Anjou or Bartlett pears, cored and cut lengthwise into 1/2-inch-thick slices (about 3 pounds)
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, divided
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons chilled butter, cut into small pieces
1/3 cup regular oats
1/4 cup coarsely chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 375°.

Combine pears and lemon juice in a 2-quart baking dish; toss gently to coat. Combine granulated sugar, cornstarch, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon; stir with a whisk. Add cornstarch mixture to pear mixture; toss well to coat.

Lightly spoon flour into a dry measuring cup; level with a knife. Place flour, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, brown sugar, and salt in a food processor; pulse 2 times or until combined. Add chilled butter; pulse 6 times or until mixture resembles coarse meal. Add oats and walnuts; pulse 2 times. Sprinkle flour mixture evenly over pear mixture.

Bake at 375° for 40 minutes or until pears are tender and topping is golden brown. Cool 20 minutes on a wire rack; serve warm or at room temperature.

Saturday

Hi all,

Just getting us started. Agility class today, HouseMax, but first DH and I are going out for breakfast.

Valerie, thanks for the recipe!

Garance, I am guessing that Cardio Barre is a lot like P-57?

Hi to Josie, Joan, & Cathy, I hope everyone has some fun planned for this weekend. Does everyone have their tree up? DH and I have silently agreed to not discuss it.

Have a good one!

Got in STS #2 yesterday... I'd forgotten that was where pull ups and chinups were introduced. I can move up and down (a little) 5 times with a rubber band assist. a long time before I can do "real" ones. I seem to rely on biceps. don't know how to get back muscles involved although they must be doing something. I wish I had a less impossible way to do these. I tried the resistance band method and that wasn't useful so I'm hanging from a chinup bar like a dead animal. but I can go up and down a little which is progress.
Had a small dish of crisp last night. had 1/6 of the 1/2 recipe I made, if that makes any sense. I used 2 over ripe pears and an apple. great use for fruit that's past its prime.

Good morning all,

I slept for 16 1/2 hours. I must have needed it. No wo or housemax yesterday. Tonight is Christmas party and I don't feel like going.

Deb sorry to tell you but we have 5ft tree in kitchen, 7ft tree in living room, 2ft tree on tv cabinet in family room, 2 live trees in pool area-6ft and 9ft. We couldn't get 12ft tree this year. If I don't get everything up by weekend after Christmas I don't want to bother.

Valerie our favorate restaurant has started serving tiny desserts. You are right just a little of the good stuff is enough.

Garance calories were 1894 because we ate out twice. Yes good days are when I eat at home. I may be estimating calories a little high when we go out. I don't eat high volume but everything has so many more calories in it.

Joan

today i did total muscle shaping today. must be tired, it was really hard.

WW has a bunch of good recipes and they are really super easy. that is my kind of cooking. and, i have a yummy, very easy soup recipe. i'll put it here in case anyone wants to try it.

1 large butternut squash
1/2 large potato
chopped onion

saute the onion in a bit of oil, then boil squash, and potato w/onion til soft. then, all you do is puree' the whole schmear, and eat it . it is unbelievalbly delicious!! i did put a little salt and pepper in mine. but not much.
