Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 12/29

Good morning all,

Back to work this morning, and it's only 11 degrees! Brrrr!

Lori, I'm with Lynda, "plyocide" does not sound like a fun thing LOL....I am feeling better thank you. How is Chester's leg?

Judy, did your SIL come to see FIL yet? You mentioned that they were talking about care givers, visiting nurses etc.

Josie, I love Palm Springs! The resort that we go to there for our association meeting is wonderful.

Garance, not sure how long we have had this thread....but remember we first called it "50 & over"? Then I think you turned 60 so we changed the name :).

Hi to Valerie, hope you had a nice New Year's Day...

Take care,

Good Morning,

It's 15 degrees with a -1 wind chill this morning. We got at least 7 inches of snow yesterday and last night and it's still coming down. DH is working from home and I'm not sure if I am going to work this afternoon or not. The roads are pretty bad.

Deb-SIL is coming later in January and taking FIL in for another assessment.
It's really scary thinking of him being in his house alone, especially in this weather, but DH has been talking to him on the phone, and a neighbor is taking care of snow removal at FIL's house. The bad winter we are having might be a blessing in disguise, as it may be motivating SIL, DH, and even FIL to realize that FIL can't continue to live in his house alone. At the very least, there needs to be some kind of network of professional caregivers close by that can get to his house every day to help him. It takes 45 minutes in good weather to drive from our condo to his house. It would probably take 2 hours if we had to get there today.

Lynda-The forecasters definitely exaggerate. This snow storm did get pretty bad, but usually they forecast a blizzard, then all the schools close and everyone panics, and we only get a couple of inches.

Lori-I hope you don't get a foot of snow today.

Hi to Josie & Valerie,

Stay safe everyone,

Judy

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did All Out Low Impact Hiit + core 1 (49:22).

I don't know if storm Hercules is over or not. It is not snowing now since about noon. Maybe it's continuing its eastward movement. I think Boston will probably get hit much worse than western MA. Maybe tonight things will get worse because the weathermen and women are predicting howling winds, drifting snow, and bone chilling temps. But they seem to have such a good time threatening all of that I'm not sure what to believe. Hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

Deb, wasn't there also a 50's thread started after we started this one? I wonder if Joan ever lurks here, because she was on both threads I believe.

Judy, how far away are you from FIL? I agree that this weather is probably particularly hard on elderly homeowners.

Josie, I envy your trip to Palm Springs! I could use some warm weather right now.

Hi to Valerie and Lori!

My sympathies for the nasty winter weather. It seems (in my unprofessional opinion) that when the Midwest /east coast get a bad winter, we out west have the opposite. a mild and non snowy one. on the other hand, when you get a mild benign winter, the west coast especially the pacific northwest get hammered. but regardless, the weather forecasters seem to exaggerate to the point of it being laughable. I know it's not an exact science, but the delivery is so funny sometimes.... make it sound like the end-of-the- civilized-world
we are NOT used to snow in the lowlands here, and a lot of people don't know how to drive.... and when to stay home. a lot of schools and businesses don't have good judgment either. they seem to prefer to get all the traffic out on the roads and people stuck all over, and then announce that everything is closing for the day, so just go back home.

we went mt biking yesterday for 2-3 hours and a first.... we got separated. DH rides faster than I do and I got to a "T" and I didn't know which way he went. I looked one way and didn't see him, so went the other way. by this time we were FAR apart and I wasn't sure what to do so I went to the main trailand waited for a while there, thinking he had continued around the loop again. no luck. after a long time, I decided to go back to the road and wait there. Meanwhile, as I found later, DH had gone back to the car thinking I'd have gone there. I had the cell but he didn't have a phone with him, which would have simplified things. he borrowed a phone and called me, but it took me a while to get the phone out of my bike carrier... so I didn't answer. ( I wasn't expecting a call since he didn't have a phone) he was ready to call 911 thinking I'd crashed and burned because I didn't answer. I called back in a couple seconds but we realized we need to have a better plan should this happen again.

Judy, that is a thought... sometimes it takes an event of nature to prove they can't manage any more... hopefully he'll stay in and not do anything silly like shovel snow. Our main issue here is power outs that come with snow. that is always a challenge. hopefully that won't happen with him.

Lynda, we are about 30 miles from FIL. It doesn't take long to get to Ann Arbor using the back roads, but once there, traffic usually slows us down quite a bit. Definitely too far for us to be of any use in an emergency.

Valerie-I hope he doesn't shovel. One of his neighbors has DH's phone number and promised to call if she sees FIL doing anything he shouldn't be doing. I'm confident his neighbors would try to stop him if they saw him shoveling.

Hi Ladies,

We started our group about 7 years ago. I started one 50 and over and Garance suggest w change it to pentagenarians because there was another 50's group :)

It was 83 degrees in PS. today. We have the air conditioner right now.

Have s nice evening ladies, I have to get dinner ready for my two gluttons :). These kids are always hungry.

Josie

Hi ladies!

Went into work just for a couple of hours. Horrible weather and getting worse. Grabbed some work and said see ya! According to the weather reports we are expected to get up to 14 inches and the wind chill in the morning will feel like -20 with the high winds. That is insane. I am planning to take a vacation day tomorrow. No way am I driving in. Going to take me all morning to dig out and hope I do not freeze to death doing it!!!!

Anyways....was not feeling yoga which was on the rotation so ended up doing Cathe's Pyramid Hiit followed with punching drills from cardio kicks. Was about 50 mins.

That is really great knowing you girls started this group that long ago. I wondered how long you guys have been chatting. Have you had many that joined in then drifted off? I guess that happens.

Josie...we will not be turning the A/C on anytime soon! :(

Valerie...that is kind of scary. Yes you guys need a plan. Amazing with all the riding you two do this has not come up before. Glad it all worked out.

Lynda...yes we are getting the storm. Right now everything they forecasted is spot on. Been snowing since this morning. I went out today and bought gas for the generator and brought in wood for the fireplace. Not taking any chances. When we were hit with the ice storm several years back we had no power in 5 degree weather for 5 days. Thank god I was prepared then too.

Judy...nice that your FIL has neighbors watching out for him and taking care of the snow.

Hi to Deb!!!!!!! Glad you are feeling better!

Lori-it sound like you are going to get hit worse than we were. I hope you don't lose your power. Take care and stay warm!

Good morning all,

It's a balmy 3 degrees right now, and going up to 7 as the high today!

Lovely. I guess the New England states were hit pretty hard. Our Boston office closed early yesterday and said they were not opening today either. Also the port of New York closed yesterday so all vessel traffic came to a halt. What a mess that is going to be when it re-opens.

Judy, I sure hope that when your SIL comes, both her and your DH can agree on a plan going forward for your FIL.

Garance, yes, when we started the Pentagenarian's thread, Joan kept the "over 50" one going and used to post on both. I am not sure if she is posting at all anymore. She also posted in MyFitnessPal, but I have not seen her over there for a while either.

Valerie, that had to be very scary when you and DH got separated. I would now be a real "bug" about him having a phone on him at all time when riding. John hates cell phones and never keeps his phone turned on, even when he has it with him, but since I was sick, he has had it on all the time, when he was out of the house. I think he finally realized the positive aspects of a cell phone.

Josie, thanks for the info on our thread...it seems longer doesn't it? so much has happened during this time.

Lori, Good that you are staying home today...smart move. No sense it putting yourself out there in danger. Besides Joan, I think we had one other "regular" person named Cathy, who is in Texas that stopped posting a couple of years ago. She dropped in about 4-6 months ago (?) for a day or so, but not since. Her screen name is ....." drover" I think...

I go to the DR this afternoon to get the blood work results. Wish me luck.

then home to crawl under the blankets and keep warm!

What a nasty storm! It's January, though, so not too hard to understand. Lori, that is the right plan. get supplies set up and ready for the possibilities. we are always prepared for bad weather and power outs. just keep things in a state of "ready" so it's not a panicky rush if the forecast is worse than expected. we are plodding along with mid forties and on and off rain. not too bad, but Josie has it the best... 83 and air conditioning on! sounds good right now!
It makes so much more sense to cancel things ASAP when it's clear the forecast is accurate. seems we always have to learn the hard way out here, and no one cancels anything until it's a mess, and then thousands of people's cars are blocking the roads and plows can't function.

the area we got separated in is not big. it's heavily wooded with a road running through and trails that loop around. you could be 100 yards apart and not see each other. We copied the map that he had and I have a copy now. depending on what kind of place we're riding, we will have a plan on what to do if we get separated. meeting back at the car might be best sometimes but not always. depends on the trail. he doesn't want another cell phone ... I'd end up carrying 2 phones! still wouldn't help.

Deb, I remember Cathy (drover) and Joan . the whole Over Fifty thread disappeared... seemed like there were some new people and I was gone for a bit and never saw it again. I thought maybe they renamed it?

I went to yoga yesterday, then did Pedal power and core I. still not crazy about the workout but it went better when I sit more and pedal harder/ faster, and stand maybe half the time they do. it slows me down so much... standing makes if barely even cardio. I will keep working on it.

Hope you all get thru without power loss or other difficulties.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Flextrain (56:36).

Deb, it's 7 here as well. But not so windy and very sunny. If it were just a bit warmer, I wouldn't mind snowshoeing, because this snow is like powder and it really is pretty. It was never a real blizzard, just continuous light snow. I remember a long time ago we had someone named Jen from Texas and a nurse in New Hampshire--Linnyrn--who both disappeared. Cathy and Joan appeared a bit later. And I think we started in 2006 as Josie remembers because I vaguely remember posting about going to Oxford and hurting my knee. I also remember Josie doing a college search for her daughter, who has since graduated, and hurting her head while climbing on the dunes.

Lori, I bet Boston is a mess. Our son always talks about how hard it is to deal with parking and snow removal in Charlestown. Did you get to see American Hustle, or did the weather interfere?

Judy, I hope everything works out for your FIL. Has the subject even been broached with him, or does he refuse to even think about leaving his home?

Valerie, your DH sounds a bit difficult--back to the issue of carrying stuff! Good luck on the spinning--I had no idea it needed so much coordination.

Hi to Josie!

Happy Saturday!!

Not much going on here. It's a little warmer today, 14 right now. Going to try to get a mani/pedi this morning, then errands and tons of HouseMax to do.

what's everyone doing this weekend besides trying to stay warm?

Lynda, I assumed most husbands use their wife's purses as convenient "carry-alls". DH doesn't like things in his pockets and never carries a cell. he carries a wallet only because he has to. I worry that if my purse ever gets stolen or lost it will have 2 entire lives (and identities) in it.

we split wood yesterday, good upper body work. I was extremely tired yesterday for no particular reason but am feeling more normal today.

we are severely lacking snow this year and weather continues mild. mid 40's.

I feel for the Midwest... I lived in Wisconsin when we had a sub zero blast like is expected shortly. I could not believe minus 30.... I was working nights then, and all of us had to go out and start our cars( parked on the street) every few hours so they WOULD start when it was time to go home. didn't have the luxury of a garage. everything got so stiff it was hard to turn the key in the ignition, and the seats felt like wood planks.

Deb, you are sounding better.... are you back to normal? nothing like a round of House max to get you going.

Good afternoon ladies!

Yesterday I sub'd in Rockout Knockout for PX90 Kenpo. I like Cathe's kickbox better. Today I needed to sub again. DS was staying over and I forgot to grab my weights so I was left with only bands this morning so instead of P90x Back and Legs I did Travelfit followed by LLA and Flextrain's firewalkers. Really felt the burn as I only had the blue band and blue firewalker. Wow is all I can say!

Still really cold here. 3 degrees a little while ago. I am actually at work right now. Decided to come in to make my life a little easier on Monday.

Doing errands later and then some house max. That is pretty much my day.

Valerie...my DH is the same way. He tries to put most things in my pocketbook.

Lynda...yes the snow is really pretty and was easier to shovel this time. When I first joined this thread I remember there being a 50 and older group. I posted a few times on that but felt more comfortable with you guys. ;) Then after a few months the thread just went away. I remember thinking it was odd. Have not seen American Hustle yet! Still trying to get there.

Hi to Deb, Josie and Judy!

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning was Housemax and then we went for a 2 hour snowshoeing hike. It warmed up nicely to the 20s and the snow was so beautiful. Max just goes crazy when we do this. We have about 90 acres of woods, so we just go back on our land. DH also has his various pens of pigs fenced in back there. They have warm houses filled with hay for the cold, but they were out frolicking this afternoon. We just had to go snowshoeing before it rains tomorrow. Ugh! That will be ugly.

Deb, we are going to the Comfort Sunday dinner tomorrow night--it looks Asian inspired, which I love. I think I will go to see Philomena tomorrow afternoon too.

Valerie, I'm with Josie. Tell DH to carry his own gear. I'm with you on the Midwest. Nothing worse than Minnesota in an Arctic blast, and they are really getting it now. When I was an undergrad at UMinnesota, I was a double major, with classes on either side of the Mississippi River, West Bank Poli-Sci, East Bank English. During the winter it was horrendous crossing back and forth if you missed the shuttle bus.

Lori, we are very reliable. Glad you joined us. I bet the blue firewalker band stung. I like the leg work on Flextrain a lot. I think the disk work really has helped me to stabilize my wobbly knees and I like the dancey music for the firewalker band.

Hi to Judy and Josie!

Hi Everyone,

We are getting ready for the winter storm that is supposed to dump 12 inches more snow on SE Michigan tomorrow. Then after the snow, we are supposed to get an arctic blast and have record breaking low temps Monday night and all Tuesday. We just got back from FIL's, making sure he has everything he needs since he'll probably be snowed in for a few days.

I did Spinervals yesterday and this morning and am planning on doing a lot of training over the next couple of days. We probably won't be going anywhere in this weather so I will have plenty of time. I just got KickMax in the mail today, so that may be on the agenda, along with Muscle Max, Core Max, and a long Spinerval, at least 2 hours. I've taken more rest days recently than I am used to, and I feel really good and rested now.

Valerie-I did Ride last week and hardly stood at all. I seem to do better when I sit and ride.

Lynda-DH and SIL have talked to FIL about moving out of his house, and he won't hear of it. Unfortunately, that decision will probably have to be made by someone else, as FIL's mental state and physical health deteriorates. I think DH and SIL are going to work on getting guardianship when she is here later in the month.

Hi to Deb, Lori, & Josie!

Judy
