Good morning all,

Just getting us started for the week. My last day of rest today. i plan on going to work tomorrow. The nice thing is that there is the break with Wednesday being the holiday.

What does everyone have planned for New Year's Eve/Day?

John and I usually get crab legs and steak and make a nice dinner on New's Year's eve but I don't think that is in the plans for this year. He picked up some nice cod and sweet potatoes at the store yesterday, for tonight's dinner. Not sure what we will do on Tuesday night. We are invited to my brother's for New Year's Day dinner, (turkey with all the trimmings), but I will wait to see how I feel before deciding on that.

It is in the 40's here now, hope it stays for the day and tomorrow,

Take care,

We have no plans for New years. we are meeting with a lawyer for "estate planning" and then cousin & wife for lunch Monday. Tuesday I'm meeting someone from my vets office to check out a possible kitty who needs a home. I'll try to come up with something special for dinner, and then watch the year end summaries on TV.

I made the almond tart for dinner at friends house tonight. it looks lovely. I'll report back on whether it's as good as I remember. there were several other tart recipes in the article but these are too rich for me to have sitting around my kitchen.
I need to check and see if there's yoga on Tuesday. not sure about that.

I used to love new years eve when everyone would go to parties, movies, and out for dinner but it has devolved into a "nothing" holiday. everyone is too scared to have a glass of wine with dinner and then drive home. the media makes such a big deal out of the extra emphasis patrols, 'Don't Drink and Drive" etc. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not recommending people get drunk and drive, but it used to be adults could have an adult beverage and not fear being pulled over for no reason, but that is the message that comes across. It puts a damper on people going out at all, especially on NYE, at least... in my opinion.

I'm off to try the new workout and will report back.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Rockout Knockout (55:16).

Deb, I guess I would recommend 12 Years a Slave and either Captain Phillips or American Hustle, which I just saw. American Hustle I enjoyed because I love the actors and the quirkiness of David O. Russell, but I don't think it might be to your taste. Captain Phillips might be better for you. I'm pretty sure you would like Philomena if you are looking for something smaller. I suspect both The Wolf of Wall Street and Gravity will be on the Oscar list, and Gravity is definitely something to see in 3D, so it would be best to catch it before it goes to DVD. Other possible Oscar hopefuls: Saving Mr. Banks and the Coen Bros. film about the Village folk music scene in the late 1950s.

We are going out to dinner on New Year's Eve and then over to friends for a few toasts to the new year.

Enjoy the waning days of 2013!

Just went thru the 39 min premix of Flextrain... I like it! You all gave me good advice! glad I got this one.
I warmed up for 20 on the treadmill for a little more cardio. DH needs the gym too so had to go "shorter". I also went light on the weights. used a lighter weight than they did for the entire workout, like 8 instead of 10, 5 instead of 8. If nothing gets sore, I'll go up next time.

Lynda, thanks for the reminder about Gravity in 3D. I'd like to see it in a theater, whereas the others I'll wait for on disk.

Hi Everyone,

Last night I did an hour of easy to moderate spinning. Today I did Muscle Endurance (Intensity) and Core Max 1. I just got the Boot Camp/Muscle Endurance DVD yesterday and couldn't wait to try it out. I wasn't disappointed. That was a great full body workout, I liked it almost as much as Muscle Max.

We don't really have any New Year's Eve plans, just a quiet evening at home.

Deb-I hope you are feeling better for the New Year.

Lori-I am thinking about mixing the STS program up a little too. I follow one of the Cathe facebook groups and someone posted that they were going to do STS, but substitute other Cathe leg workouts for the STS ones. I am kind of leaning in that direction after looking at the STS leg workouts. I really think I would do better with one of the older leg workouts (pre sliding disc moves).

Hi to Lynda, Valerie & Josie,

Judy

Good evening ladies!

This morning I did the CVX workout from p90x3. Love this one. My son was visiting so I have no workout area when he is here since I converted his room over to my gym. :p. Needed to do a workout that did not require much equipment and this fit the bill. 30 minutes of 1 minute drills while holding a weight the entire time. 15 sec rest in between drills.

Judy...I have never done the Muscle Endurance but have done Boot Camp many times. I will check out ME since I really like Muscle Max. For rotations I am going to go with p90x. I have a couple of girlfriends that are starting tomorrow so plan to do it with them. We are starting with P90x then P90x2 then P90x3. P90x started my love for weights and I have only done this once so I am kind of excited.

Lynda...how did you like American Hustle? This is on my want to see list. I so agree with you on 12 years and captain phillips.

Valerie.. I love Flextrain! The only move I do not care for is the curtsy back. It's an awkward move for me and I feel I get no benefit from it. I usually modify and do deep squats with over head press. I really like the ab section on this one too.

Deb...we stay home NYE. Years ago we loved to go out. This year we have a couple of friends coming over for dinner and we plan to play a couple of games. We are really into dominos and scrabble. Lol! Wow we are old!

Hi to Josie. I am sure you are having fun with the peanuts!

Have a great night!

Good morning,

Off to work this morning, wish me luck. I also have to have blood drawn at 12:30, for a re-check of my liver enzyme values.

Valerie, can you post the recipe for the almond tart, or where you found it? Glad you like Flex Train. I found it to be a "refreshing" kind of change from Cathe's normal weight workouts. We used to go out New Year's Eve too, usually to dinner and sometimes to a local jazz club to hear a group. That all changed, the club basically closed, and dinners out seemed to be worse every year. Restaurants started doing special "New Year's menus" where you had maybe 3 entrees to choose from, and none of them were usually good. So we started buying our own steak and crab legs and doing our thing at home. I much prefer it this way.

Garance, thanks for the movie recommendations!

Judy, ME is still one of my favorite Cathe total body workouts. it has great premixes too.

Lori, so you are doing 9 months of P90X workouts? They are all 3 month programs right?

Hi to Josie,

Take care,

Deb, yes that's what I meant. we used to go all out ... all dressed up, hair done, fancy dinner, some place with live music after... all sort of fun and glittery... but that has all faded away. I think most people sit home and watch TV in their sweats! oh well... times change.
The tart turned out nicely. think I overbaked it by a couple minutes. a little drier than it should be. (Different oven) ... next time I'll do 35 min not 40. the author is still writing books but Gourmet did not have this in their old recipes...it's from 1992.
I will try to find it online but so far I only have a magazine article about 4 pages long. it has pictures, several different crust recipes and several different fillings plus some history. I can run a copy and mail it to you...too much typing, too many chances to leave out something.

Lori there were a couple things I didn't quite get and one sounds like the curtsy... but the first time through, I just plunge on ahead regardless. the premix didn't have abs. I'm not sore so I will repeat it soon, doing the full workout. I have both Bootcamp and muscle max but haven't done them in ages. too many disks, can't do them all.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Great Glutes, the premix without the ball (55:30). I think this is one of Cathe's best leg workouts.

I hope all is well for you now, Deb, and you can enjoy thinking about the new year. Any resolutions or plans?

Valerie, I will try epicurious.com. They frequently have old recipes from Gourmet and Bon Appetit, so maybe this one will show up.

Lori, I think you will like American Hustle, and I bet you compare it to the Wolf of Wall Street. The characters are all creatures of excess, but despite their vices, there is something tender and sweet about them. And, the female characters, played by Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence, are ditsy (especially Lawrence's Gloria), but quite capable of out-conning the men and fulfilling their own agendas. There are some wonderful plot twists, too. Christian Bale is, as usual, absolutely terrific--and unrecognizable in this role. A comb over not to be believed! I don't see how Amy Adams can keep those low-cut dresses in place! If you liked Silver Linings Playbook, also a Russell film, you will like this one too. The script is equally zany.

Good afternoon ladies!

This morning I started p90x and did the chest and back workout. This is pretty much pushups and pullups with a couple of weight sets stuck in. This is one of my favorites. I use bands for pullups and this works well for me.

Deb..yes you are correct. 9 months of P90x. We will see how this goes. To mix things up a bit when I did the first round a couple years ago of P90x1 I sub'd in a few cathe's....her plyo workouts and kickboxing are better and harder than Tony's in my opinion so I will still get variety. When it comes to P90x 3 since they are 30 minutes I will be able to add in even more variety.

Lynda...I have heard American Hustle is great. Going to try and see it this weekend. I was reading a write up about christian bale and it said he put on weight, grew his hair and shaved the top so he would have the pull over. He is great in everything he does!

Valerie...yup those were the days..getting all dressed up and going out. Long ago...most people I know now have quite evenings. We are looking forward to ours. My son and his girlfriend will be coming over too along with 2 other couples.

Hi to Josie and Judy!!!

Good morning all,

Work was very quiet yesterday, just the way I like it I'm sure it will be even more quiet today. Most people are off, and our clients take a lot of time off for the holidays.

Valerie, no need to copy and mail, I'm sure between us, one of us can find it online.

Garance, no plans but a resolution to faithfully take probiotics for the rest of my life!

Lori, wow, P90x for 9 months sounds overwhelming to me. I guess your plan to mix it up a bit will make it doable and keep it interesting.

Hi to Josie & Judy!

We will have dinner, and just relax for the evening.

Happy New Year's Eve!

Deb I looked at epicurious and didn't find it though it's a gold mine of old recipes. a massive number of lovely sounding tarts. this particular recipe was part of an article about 'crostata" which are the Italian version of a French tart. there is a lot of text with stories about various techniques, versions, and recipes mixed in. I'll look at the author on line later today and see if it's included in any of her books but but since it was part of a bigger article and in 1992, I'm not real hopeful.
it is no bother to copy and mail if I can't find this particular one. I was amazed (at the epicurious site) how many both sweet and savory tarts are out there. wow. you could start today and never work thru them all. I've made a quite a few tarts and "galettes" over the years but have gotten away from it because they are usually pretty rich and I can't afford the calories unless I'm making it for guests.

no workout yesterday, a busy day with lawyers, lunch with cousins, some shopping ( OMG busy) and picking up our truck from major warranty service. off to yoga shortly.

Judy, the times I did STS I skipped most of the leg sections. I was doing other cardio, like hiking and biking and doing a tough leg workout was not going to fit in.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Party Rockin' Step 2 (52:28).

Valerie, I looked at Epicurious too, and yes, there are a lot of choices for tarts, but none of them was the one you made.

I am dressing up for tonight, but not in the little red embellished slip dress I was hoping to wear. It's too FRIGID, so I am wearing a suit--lavender wool with a swirly gored skirt (some of the gores are silk charmeuse) I made from a DKNY Vogue pattern several years ago. It also sounds like bad weather headed our way on Thursday. I just hope it doesn't get as cold as the Midwest looks. Brrrr!

Lori, I think I might start another XTrain rotation with some variation, starting next week.

Judy, I knew after my shoulder tendonitis that I would never want to do STS again, so I sold it. I did it doubled the first time, and then twice more the 3 mos. version. I wish you luck with it--it's a very impressive program from Cathe.

Happy New Year, Deb and Josie!

Hi Ladies,

I have been busy with trying to keep the kids entertained. I'm taking them to the Queen Mary today and then my DH and I are going to a friends house for and early celebration and then home to spend it with the kids and my DB who has been staying with me for the last 2 weeks. He has been a great help with the kids :)

I will be starting T-25 next monday and will be adding muscle endurance and muscle max twice per week in addition to spinning and riding on the weekends

Garance, your outfit sounds beautiful. The only thing I miss about work is dressing up. I don't get to wear my suits and beautiful dresses and my high heels :(

Deb, hope that you are feeling better.

Hi to Valerie, Judy and Lori!

Happy New Year!!

Josie

Hi Everyone,

Today is a rest day for me. I'm taking it easy and making a list of goals for 2014. This wasn't a great year and I'm glad that it's almost over.

Lori-I just noticed there is a P90x app for the iPhone. It's $2.99 for the download then you can buy individual workouts or bundles. I might do this just to see what they are like and try one out.

Deb-It sounds like you are feeling better. I like your resolution about taking probiotics.

Valerie-I really think that lots of biking, running, hiking, etc. can develop leg muscles much like training with weights.

Lynda-thanks, I'm looking forward to STS.

Josie-That sounds like a great rotation, with Muscle Max and Muscle Endurance.

Happy New Year! Best wishes to you all in 2014.

Judy

Good morning and Happy New Year!

Had a great time last night. Lot's of fun. Worked out later in the day. Needed to get house ready and some errands done. Once finished I had enough time to do Tabatacize (sub'd in for p90x plyocide), hop in the shower with 5 minutes to spare before the first couple showed up! I think todays workout is shoulders and arms. Then plan to take Chester for a much needed walk. He has not gone in a couple of weeks. Not sure if I mentioned he hurt his leg running in a snow storm we had. Seems ok now so we will take it easy to be sure and see how it goes.

Lynda...your outfit does sound lovely! I wore black jeans, heels and a sequined sleeveless top. That was my elaborate outfit!

Judy..I will look into the Iphone app. Never thought to check to see if one is available. I have done a few of the p90x3 workouts and I really like them. A couple of them really work my core which I like since this is one area I do not work enough.

Josie..yes agree that does sound like a great rotation. Can you send me the link to donate to your ride. I have been meaning to do so and now can't find the link.

Deb...how are you feeling? Hoping better.

Valerie...while doing my P90x rotation I will at times sub in STS legs in place of Tony's to mix things up for me. You certainly work your legs and I completely understand why you skipped the STS workouts!

My New Years resolution is to eat a little more clean as I certainly have room for improvement and to try not to stress about the things I have no control over.

Expecting about a foot of snow tomorrow. Ugh.

Good Morning and Happy New Year!

I was going to start STS today but I think I'm going to wait and start on Monday. That seems to be a good day to start a rotation. I'm probably going to do Muscle Endurance and some core work later today. I think DH is going to go to FIL's to shovel snow. We're so afraid FIL is going to fall on ice that DH has already used most of a 50 lb bag of salt on FIL's driveway, and the sidewalks in front of his house. FIL's next door neighbor is in his 90's and we have been shoveling his driveway too.

Lori-I hope Chester's leg is better. We're supposed to get 3-6 inches of snow today and more over the weekend. I thought that was pretty bad until you said you were getting a foot of it  I think we are paying for some of those mild winters we've had recently. I'll have to look up stats to confirm, but I think this winter we will have the most snow since I moved here in 2007.
I like your resolutions!

Hope everyone has a nice, relaxing day. I'll check in later.

Judy

Happy New Year Ladies,

I will be taking my brother home today and spending the night there. He lives in Palm Springs.

Lori, just go to aidslifecycle.org and look for my name (Josefina Greenidge)when you hit the donate button. Thank you :)

Deb, hope 2014 is better for you.

Hi to Garance, Valerie and Judy!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Burn Sets Bis and Tris with Core 1 (47:40).

We thoroughly enjoyed last night. DH had the special tasting menu which was really, really good, but way too much for me, and I had Asian greens salad and pan-roasted salmon. We went over to our friends after dinner, and had champagne and a few chocolates (I love dark chocolate!!) to bring in the new year. We were invited to a party today, but DH has too much to do getting ready for the storm (animals, snowplow, wood) named by some idiot "Hercules."

Judy, we are girding our loins for a big snowstorm that is supposed to start tonight and not finish until Friday morning. DH never trusts the weathermen, though, so who knows? He is usually right that they exaggerate, so they are predicting 8-10, and he predicts 4-5. We shall see. It's supposed to be dastardly cold, though, on Friday.

I'm planning on having lunch on Friday with my friends who do Jacob's Pillow every year with me. We just received the schedule of performances, so we must pick and choose either 5 or 6.

Deb, how long have we been Pentagenarian buddies? I was still in my 50s when we started so it must be over 10 years (!). Happy new year!

Lori, "plyocide" sounds like "death by plyometrics." Your outfit sounds casual chic.

Hi to Josie and Valerie with all good wishes for the new year!
