Happy Holiday Weekend!

I hope everyone had a great holiday. I did the start of week 7 from C25K, but had to walk about 3 times, for about a minute duing the 25 minute jog. I will just keep trying the next 2 times, and if I have to, I will repeat this week.

Have a great weekend, what's left of it anyway,

Deb

We had a great Christmas. Today will be Christmas part 2.

I'm still trying to get in 3 miles a day. The last 2 days it has been closer to 2 miles.

Joan

Hi Deb, Joan, and any later posters--

This morning I did P-57, volume 2 (a Christmas present from DS).

We had a lovely Christmas and it looks like we will be hit with a Nor'easter tonight and tomorrow. Hope I can get some snowshoeing in.

Is everyone back to work tomorrow? Winter Study here does not start until January 3, so I have another week sort of off. Sort of because I want to settle into preparing for next semester and start my new resolution of not procrastinating.

What are your plans for New Year's Eve, ladies?

Another big eating day. We had a crowd again.

We leave Dec 29 for Las Vegas and will be back Jan 5th late. We have a party at Riviera on New Year's eve. I better hit a royal on New Year's day. I wouldn't want to break a streak.

Joan

Good morning,

No workout this morning, I planned to sleep in a bit, but got up at 5:00 anyway. Gives me a chance to do some stuff before getting ready for another week of work. At least it is only 4 days this week, then a nice 3 day weekend.

Garance, no plans for New Year's Eve. DH and I usually get a nice steak, maybe some crab legs and cook at home. I don't like the New Years crowds and restaurants usually have a "special" menu that is limited and not that good. How did you like the new P-57? Did you get hit with that storm? We are farther west so we did not get anything.

Joan, good luck in Vegas!

Take care,

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did the double bootcamp circuit with KCM (55 min.).

Deb, we have about 18 inches of snow and it's still coming down. Very light and fluffy, but DH has been out plowing now for 2 hours. Maxie loves the snow, but he wears himself out boinging in it like Tigger. He luuuves sitting in the truck with DH while he's plowing. He's all alertness and concern. We are going to Mezze's on New Year's Eve and will have their tasting menu at 65 dollars per person. The menu looks absolutely scrumptious:

First course: Hudson Valley Foie Gras Pate, Peanut Butter Apple Jelly+Brioche

Second course: Butter-poached Maine Lobster, Roasted Fennel with Orange and Vanilla

Third course: House-made Pastrami, Sauerkraut, Rye Bread and Russian Dressing

Fourth course: 48 Hour Sous Vide Short Ribs, Black Truffle Puree, Stoneground grits and Braised Kale

Dessert: Boston Cream Doughnut

I have not gained any weight over the holidays, but this might be the tipping point!

Good luck in Vegas, Joan!

we're back from Oregon. weather was generally crummy... windy and rainy with hail storms and a few sections of fairly clear spots. they live right on the ocean. a lot of people go to the coast just to watch the storms but we get enough stormy weather that it doesn't seem like that much fun to me. it was very sobering though, to see SIL & BIL. they are younger than DH and I, 54-55 and are in terrible shape. they are both gimping around like they're 90. both put on weight and aren't doing exercise and it shows. we hoped to do some easy walking on flat land near the beach but they really didn't want to do it though we could have done a little between storms. SIL seems to have some kind of mechanical issue with her hip or knee but hasn't followed up with her medical provider. BIL is retired on disability and seems to have decided to act more disabled than he is. oh well. we think they will return the visit in a couple months and we'll try to encourage them to get moving. Didn't want to be a grinch and bitch about exercise when everyone is drinking wine and relaxing in front of the TV.

Joan, good luck with Vegas!

we have no big new years eve plans but hope to go camping/cycling since we have a 4 day weekend. Deb, we gave up long ago on "dinner out" as it's always disappointing. I never like the 'specials" and would rather have pizza. or pasta. Lynda, that sounds like a well thought out menu but not my kind of food. I dearly love kale but if I even smell sauerkraut I'd run screaming into the street. I do hope you enjoy it and don't gain an ounce.

even the new years TV specials haven't been worth watching. some of our best new years have been spent camping and getting up early and birdwatching, or xc skiing, or cycling while the rest of the world is sleeping in.

I've done nothing for 2 days though I worked hard on friday. I finished meso 2 along with some bicycle and treadmill time. DH is exercising now and I'll go after him. probably just treadmill but after sitting and driving for 5.5 hours each way I feel like a slug. Haven't looked at the new disks yet, maybe will do a preview while on the treadmill.

Good morning,

I am trying to fight off DH's cold. I am determined not to get it, but now have a scratchy throat.

Garance, that dinner would get me out of the house on New Year's Eve!

Valerie, sorry you had such crummy weather, and in-laws that were not that active. It sounds like they need to start taking care of themselves as soon as possible. Did your DH try the new workouts yet?

Not too chatty today, I feel like going back to bed.

Take care,

I worked out yesterday afternoon and watched most of "STS total body'. Looks like a good workout though I will need to change a setting to get the picture right. the aspect is not set right and their bodies are slightly distorted. their heads and feet are stretched out looking while mid screen is normal. this is a fairly old (picture tube) TV but settings are changeable. found the manual after watching the DVD. it's watchable as it is... I wasn't noticing it as much toward the end, but apparently Cedie has lost weight anyway and looks like she weighs 100 lbs with the distortion.

Deb, so sorry you're getting the cold... will make new years celebrations null and void! our in laws have never been 'in shape" but this was a significant change. I felt like a skinny Olympian compared to them.

yesterday 20 on the bike, 35 treadmill. I've gradually intensified runs and it's working well. I've been running 30 min with a 5 min cool down. during the run I've been increasing speed by 1/2 mph for one minute increments. I run at 2.5% grade. starting after 15 min, I repeat 1 minute speed ups and then drop back for a minute or two to let my heart rate down. then speed up again. intervals I guess. my heart rate gradually climbs and It's been better than trying to run faster for the whole time. I had been doing steady state runs for a long time and not feeling like I was getting much benefit.. rate 130... but this way I can get up to 140-145 comfortably.

no resolutions yet, want to make it specific so no excuses.

Hi Deb, Valerie, and any other posters--

This morning I did Just Dance (51 min.), showered, and then went snowshoeing for 90 min. back on our land. The snow almost came up to my knees, so I feel like I had a big dose of cardio. Very beautiful today--sun out, tons of snow, our forest land looking gorgeous and lots of animal tracks and a fox den. Could not take Maxie because he would have had too much trouble with the snow.

Yesterday was horrendous. It just kept snowing and the wind was howling like crazy, drifting and forcing DH to keep plowing out the drifts in the driveway. I just stayed home all day.

Deb, I forgot the review of P-57 vol. 2. I like it a lot. A lot of new exercises for the legs, a somewhat more challenging upperbody workout, and an ab workout from hell. I had to pause several times during this one. I thought the ab workout on Squeeze was difficult, but this one is really, really hard. I now have so many barre style workouts that I don't know how soon I will get back to STS. I feel like I should stick with these through January, and then maybe when second semester begins I will go back to STS.

Valerie, welcome back. Sorry about your in-laws, but I know what you mean about not offering too much encouragement to couch potatoes. I have a couple friends who always comment on my exercise dvd collection in a negative way because their idea of exercise is shopping at the mall. Too bad about the aspect ratio. There's been so much discussion of this on other threads that I am once again glad I did not buy any of them. I feel more and more alienated from Cathe's dvds. I don't even want to start STS again. (But I will at some point.)

Lynda, my problem apparently is with an older square screen TV, at least 10 yrs old. we have a brand new VCR/DVD player... ours died suddenly maybe 10 days ago... and it seems the aspect setting is related to the TV rather than the DVD. there are some options that can be changed though I didn't try them yet, had to find the TV instruction manual. the DVD is certainly watchable, and it looks like a good workout. by the end of it I wasn't so bothered but if it's simple I'll switch it when I use these. I know there were threads about this problem. on mine, their heads and lower legs look a little stretched out while the middle of the picture seems OK. what I don't understand is why the older DVD's, including STs, work OK but these new ones are tweaked. Argh! electronics, drives me nuts sometimes.

oh... the in-laws. they are a little weird about some things but would be so much better off if they even walked more. they have a treadmill and say they use it but it doesn't look that way. It's hard to watch people slip into serious inactivity.

too bad about all the snow though it's so pretty if you don't need to drive in it. or maybe shovel it.

I just changed the aspect to "letterbox" and the DVDs are fine.there's a thin black band above and below the picture, but no big deal. actually it was done with the
DVD player not the TV.

Good afternoon all,

At least I am still getting in 2-3 miles per day but no lifting. I plan to start something on Jan 10th.

This is the last check in for me until Jan 5th. Hope you have a nice New Year's eve.

Joan

Good morning all,

Sick and staying home today. I hope it is only a one day thing. I usually can shake these pretty fast.

Valerie, my new STS dvd looks the same, has a black bar across the top and bottom of the tv screen, like when you rent one of those movies that warns you about that. It did not bother me at all. Both my TV and DVD players are very old, so I expected that. No other Cathe DVD has ever looked like that, I attribute it to the way they filmed these. I may download High Reps to my iPod and see if I can play it from there on the old TV. You don't get the pre-mixes when you download, because you can make your own. That should be a hoot!

Garance, have you dug out yet? we did not get one flake from that storm.

later....

Hi Deb and Valerie--

This morning I did Tracy Mallett's Booty Barre (63 min.). Very tough. I stay with the modifier because I just can't get as low as Tracy does. Nor, for that matter, can I get my legs up as high as she does.

Deb, yes, we are completely dug out. I'm going to my very cold office in the afternoons and trying to get some work done with my space heater blasting. It sounds like it will be in the 40s by Friday and rain, of all things. Should be a complete mess. As it is, it's up in the low 30s today, so there are some very greasy spots.

Valerie, I'm with you on electronics. I am very appreciative of the OIT people here at the college who are patient with my frequent woes.

I may watch Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet this afternoon. I will probably be teaching this one first in the spring, so it's a good excuse to enjoy myself and convince myself that I am not procrastinating.

Good morning,

I am still feeling sick, but the OTC meds help. I wil go into work, but may not stay all day.

Garance, I hope the weather prediction is correct and we get some warmer air, metling the snow would be good.

Hi to all, stay warm,

Hmmm, maybe we got all the colder air! we went x-c skiing yesterday and it was snowing like crazy. we parked as high as we felt it was OK to drive and skied for about 2 hours, and then about half hr to get back down. It's road we use often if accessible. it hasn't been brushed out (by the forest service) in years. so we take a small hand saw along and prune back the alders as we ski. then it's good for the year. eventually it will get too "brushed in" to be usable, then will need to wait til the FS does something, usually in anticipation of logging. the tips of the small trees get caught by the snow and pulled down over the road making it hard to get through.

the adjustment for the DVD's was easy on our set up... if I can do it, it's easy. I haven't checked to see if I can leave it on "letterbox" for everything but it takes 2 seconds to change it. DH has been using Photoshop to do our vacation pics and it's new for us. we finally got things to do what we wanted . not a problem with photo shop but he was skipping a step and not getting them into folders before trying to copy to disks.

Hi Deb and Valerie--

This morning I did Jazzercise Dancin' Abs (60 min.).

A sunny and warming up kind of day. Wow, I cannot believe it's almost 2011. I did watch Hamlet yesterday afternoon. Really enjoyed it. This afternoon I will dig briefly into Measure for Measure and then going over to a friend's house to visit and watch a Balanchine ballet on dvd.

Deb, so sorry you are not feeling well. It's almost impossible to avoid a cold if you are living with someone to infect you. I did manage to stave off DH's terrible coughing cold, though, with almost immediate doses of cold-eez lozenges.

Valerie, are you getting all that bad weather out west? Seems like one coast or another is getting hit these days. I will be curious to hear from Josie about all that rain in L.A.

At least no work today, we may be taking Kelsey to the vet, she is not doing well at all. I am afraid this may be her telling us that it is "time".

I will check back later...

Hi Deb and any later posters--

Ahhhh, so sorry about Kelsey, Deb. Not the best way to start the new year.

This morning I did Slim Sculpt (45 min.).

Looking forward to our tasting menu tonight. I also will be wearing that little red silk velvet dress by Tracy Reese. It has its own embellishments, but I will also wear the diamond pendant DH gave me for Christmas. It's going up into the 40s, but I will bring a stole along to cover my shoulders. I absolutely hate being cold, so I am definitely testing myself with this dress. It's pretty small and slip like, but it fit like a dream and the price was right, so I could not resist.

Happy New Year everyone!
