Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 12/12

howdy all, hope all are doing well.
LOL! deb, i like your dancing pickle :), or whatever it is. too cute. i am alive and just busy as a bee, and then, of course, Christmas is very soon, so, i know everyone is busy. i have been working out, some short some long, just whatever i have time for, which i am sure is the same with everyone.
hope everyone is having a blessed Christmas season.

Morning all,

We just got back from walking the dogs, very cold, but at least no more snow. The plan this morning is to do day 3 of week 5 C25K, followed by STS Total Body, upper body pre-mix. I need more caffine to get going. Other than going to the library, I have no errands that need to be done...yay!

Valerie, sending you ((all clear)) letter vibes. Except for our 2 bathrooms and the stairs going up to the second floor /landings, we have all hardwood with area rugs. They are not fun to keep up though, with 2 dogs especially.

Garance, your bars sound like Heath bars...yumm! We go the lazy way, and melt chocolate, caramel, and put pecans on. like a turtle head with legs. 40 cloves of garlic??? yikes.

Josie, that program sounds great! do you work out on your own or are the workouts led by someone and done in a group?

Joan, how awful about the leaking roof. Just what you need with the kind of weather you are having. It does not make it easy to fix. Are you calling someone in to look at it?

Cathy, are you getting the new Firm DVD's? There was a thread in the Open forum about them recently.

Well, I guess I have procrastinated long enough. Time to get my butt downstairs and on the treadmill...

later...

Fortunately the only thing to fix is to get rid of the ice. I told my husband that I checked the life ins. and I think it's enough but he still won't go on the roof. It is never more than a week and the temperature is warm enough to melt the ice. In fact I think all the ice is melted now since it's not dripping. There really is no other repair. It's only weird circumstances that cause the problem.

Originally my dh told me there would be 14 people at our party tomorrow. Yesterday he changed it to 28. He forgot to add some people and another couple RSVP'd yesterday. I always make too much anyway. I better get to cooking and baking.

Joan

busy day yesterday. got in bike for 20 min, treadmill 35. haven't done it in a while but it went OK. Deb hope you were able to do your 20. that was how I learned to run longer, run walk, run, walk. I don't think the calorie burn is much different as long as you walk briskly. risk of injury is less too. Joan, I have 2 neighbors nearby that have been walking for a long time. they've both lost significant weight. I've lost hiking and that's "just" walking too. keep doing it. make it harder and increase the incline if your treadmill allows. Mine goes up 0.5% at a time. it makes for a bigger burn without seeming much harder. I usually run at 2.5% and monitor with my HRM.

Roof leaks .... anything with water getting inside is a huge problem. we get gutters blocked by tree debris rather than ice dams because it's warmer here, but it can back up and get to inside walls. we had water collecting around our foundation and coming thru a basement wall and it was a LOT of work for us to fix, but no choice other than get it done. water damage is insidious and creeps everywhere slowly, causing more trouble than at the entry point. good luck with that... we all don't have enough to do this time of year without little added projects.
Josie, sounds like a terrific program and free besides. see what you can accomplish! enjoy your vacation beforehand. Bet the group support will be a terrific motivator.

Lynda, Ina's recipes are good, though on the rich side. I cut way back on oil. No surprise to anyone watching her cook on TV. olive oil is a good fat but think she gets too free with it. I never made 40/chicken but heard of it. garlic gets really mellow and smooth if it's roasted so I'll bet it's delicious. I've roasted whole heads of garlic and spread it on toast as an appetizer. I would no doubt like turtle bars though I'd use walnuts DH has had possible migraine issues with pecans. was sad to see the price of pine nuts has escalated to being barely available ... something upwards of $40 a pound.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Tracy Mallett's Pilates Sculpt (60 min.). This one is a bit tough and I'm not sure I like all the business with the ball. I hope her Booty Barre is better.

Hope you have good weather for your party, Joan. In the past, we often had a Christmas party, but people were hopeless about RSVP'ing, the weather was often horrendous (heavy snow), and I just got tired of the fuss. As long as you enjoy the cooking and baking, Joan, then it is fun. The last time we had our Christmas party, we had much of it catered, which was nice for me, but too expensive.

Josie, when you start your fitness program in January, you must give us all the details so we can try to follow along. Have a great vacation!

Valerie, I agree with you on Ina. Too much salt and too much butter or oil. But this recipe is relatively light on both, and the garlic is so sweet after it cooks so long. Tonight it's Lidia's baked ziti and eggplant.

Deb, do you always have coffee before you work out? I just drink a big glass of water and wait until later, after I shower, to have breakfast and coffee.

Cathy, what's the weather like down there?

Happy Friday!

No one here feels like doing any work, and it is raining. We just want to go home and turn on our fire places and sip some hot chocolate.

Deb and Garance, the workout program starts on January 10 and ends April 1st. We will be working out in groups and it will be a different workout every day. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays are workout days and Wednesday we will be in classroom learning about nutrition. We will be working out in the gym and the track. We are only allowed 4 absences unless we are ill. It sounds like a great program. I will keep everyone posted on my progress and maybe we can all start on a 12 week program together. What do you think?

Hi to Cathy, Valerie and Joan.

Josie

Good morning,

A rest day today for me. I am trying to get an appointment with the vet. Kelsey has had a problem with diarrhea off and on since we put her on the special kidney food, last night at 2:00 am, it was awful. I know TMI. I am hoping we can get her in to be seen today, I am afraid she will get dehydrated again and have to be put on IV's. The poor little thing only weighs 16 pounds now. DH is out snow blowing, we got another 3-4 inches overnight.

Joan, good luck with the party!

Valerie, I agree, no matter if I am walking fast, or jogging, I seem to burn the same amount of calories.

Garance, I have to have some form of caffine to get going, especially at 4:30 am! I have these little things called STOK's, they are like the little creamers you get in a drive through, only they are espresso shots. I have 1 or 2 right before I go downstairs to work out during the week. On the weekend, I have time to make a pot of coffee and drink some before working out.

Josie, yes, let us know what this plan is like and maybe we can do it together!

Hi to Cathy, hope all is well with you and the GD's, how is the new baby?

Take care and stay warm!

Deb sorry about Kelsey. Hope you can get in today. We have pet emergency rooms around here. They are open nights and weekends. Years ago my old cat needed a transfusion and the vet hospital sent us to a people hospital to pick up blood.

We are fortunate to not get ice that often so I don't think damage is too bad.

As you know I think I am a "perfect" mil. I babysit for free and buy the formula and baby food. We babysit in the evening about once a month. I take both kids to the doctor so they don't have to take off work. They live in a 4 bedroom house that we bought. They pay $600 a month rent!!! On Wednesday she yelled at me for some misunderstanding. It caught me so off guard I didn't even have a response. Of course being around all this wonderful food I'm making has allowed my stress eating to at least be worthwhile:rolleyes:. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 2-3lb gain. My dh babysat at their house yesterday so I could cook. He brought home a note from dil. I didn't want to ruin my day so I didn't look at it until this morning. I was going to wait until Monday. It was actually an apology.

Josie I am ready (well not now but in Jan.) to start a program. Jan. 10 would we a good start. I am on vacation from Dec 29 through Jan 5.

Back to cooking.

Joan

Deb, so sorry Kelsey is having problems. the vet emergency hospitals offer a lot of services but can be *stunningly* expensive. Hope things work out OK without anything too fancy, and that your regular vet can handle it.

I like to exercise later, right before dinner, between 3-5. I know lots of people won't do it at all if they don't do it first thing, but I do better if I've been up for a while. exercising then keeps me from snacking before dinner, a vulnerable time for me, and if I'm working out I'm not tempted. I did disk 20 yesterday between 4-5. but I also now have the luxury of not having to rush around trying to fit it in before going to work. the day before I did bike and treadmill around 9 and that was OK too.

Can we call you Saint Joan? wow. and free babysitting besides. I'm stunned. that's quite a good deal for them.
Hi to Lynda, Josie, Cathy. gotta help DH with a project, maybe back later.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning was Housemax!

Deb, hope everything goes okay with Kelsey today! It's so hard when you know how bad they are feeling, but they can't talk. I have heard that coffee before working out can actually help, but I like to save my caffeine for later. I don't start working out until 6:30-6:45, so I am reasonably wide awake by then. Not sure I could get up any earlier for a workout.

Josie, yes, maybe we can all follow your routine (more or less) and achieve some weight loss and strength gains. I was thinking of starting STS again in the new year--at least for the upper body. It looks like California is really getting some ugly weather--torrential rains and snow in the mountains.

Joan, you are definitely both a terrific daughter and a saintly mil. I don't think I could bite my tongue the way you seem to do. I would probably yell, WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM?! I AM NOT A DOORMAT. I think she should apologize to your face. Written apologies are too easy.

Do all of you send out Christmas cards?

Heading down to do disk 19, it's 1 pm. I used to exercise early but I hated it. I actually enjoy it more later but I know that's not a luxury every has. It's funny because when we hike or cycle, we almost go very early and if we don't do it early it doesn't get done at all. I only get a teensy bit of caffeine in my breakfast latte. mostly decaf. caffeine revs me up but it doesn't wear off by bedtime so I limit it.

cards... yes, I sent some. some with gift cards, for far flung family. I gave up on trying to ship actual gifts. I send a few cards for husband's profession connections. mostly cards go to people we know but don"t see often. sort of a loose connection. I try to trim a few off the list every year because I hate doing it. I'm finding my list shorter every year. I hope it's a dying tradition.

Lynda, I enjoy STS more each time I do it. the "different workout each time" really works for me. I even like the leg disks. meso 3 (legs) was tough but 1&2 are quite workable and low impact. I never did 1RM testing, just record my weights in pencil on a workout card and increase as needed.
