Cathlete
Good morning,

This morning I did KCM's Slim Sculpting KB workout. It's getting a little easier.

Valerie, welcome back! It sounds like you had a "mostly great" trip. No worries about socializing with work folks, the only one I would see outside of work retired last year, so he and is wife may meet John and me for dinner once in a while, but that's it. I never heard of The Bridge, but I can understand why you are upset, nothing like getting into a series and having it end, kind of like Damages, and the one that Lynda and I watched about the high school girl, ( I can't even remember the name now!).

I am still doing the NG program, lost 2 pounds this week, and it wasn't even that hard. My craving for sugar is gone, which was one of the things I wanted to try this for. So far so good.

Lots of HouseMax today. It's beautiful here, chilly but the sun is shining. Maybe get to the yard and put some stuff away. I put this off too long.

Hi to Josie, Lynda, Judy and Lori,

Take care,

Good moning ladies!

Yesterday was Cathe live solid cardio with hiit and it was awesome. Not crazy jumping and it had alot of fun moves from her older dvds. I followed this up with SB's barre fire 3 then took chester for a 2 mile walk. Leaving soon for a hike with DS and DGF and boy I am going to feel this. My legs are so tired from yesterday so I will be moving slower than usual. My son and I and DH all have Fitbits. We bought them a couple of months back. They are fun and keep us competitive with eachother. The app on our phone allows us to track our route and mileage so it will be interesting to track the distance we hike.

Welcome back Valerie! The ride through the redwoods must have been fabulous. I have always wanted to see them. I hear they are incredible. One of these days I will get there. Crappy about the show. :(

Deb...great job on the 2lbs! NG seems to be working for you. We thought we were the only ones that still need to bring in some patio furniture. My DS and I will be doing this this afternoon while DH rakes the leaves.

Lynda...read on FB that SB's newest dvd will be available on Amazon I think this week or next. It is called BarreAmped Cardio Fat Burn and says it is high intensity intervals for ultimate fat burn. I like the sounds of this. Her Hiit workouts are nothing like Cathe's and I have found you can easily modify up or down with her.

Have a great Sunday all!

Hi Ladies,

I like BB very much and the workouts go by very fast. He goes from one set to the next with a 90 second rest in between and 30 second rest to set up the next weight increment. It reminds me of Cathe's pyramid DVD's.

Today we are going to go see my MIL, my BIL called last night and said that she was not doing well and that he and my DH have to make a decision weather or not to move her to a hospice facility. She will be 90 on Tuesday and I know that she would have never wanted to be in this situation. She is in the last stages of Alzheimer's .

Deb, I'm glad that you are enjoying your workouts again.

Lori, that hike sounds wonderful.

Valerie, welcome back.

Hi to Garance and Judy!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did BarreAmped (62:00). I didn't do the final stretch. I figure if she does stretches after each section that's enough.

Deb, that's great that you have found an eating plan that is working for you.

Lori, thanks for the news about the new SB workout. I will look for it at Amazon. Wow! That is a lot of workouts for one day.

Welcome back Valerie! I watched the first season of The Bridge. Very dark! I bet it was also better to binge watch, because I remember getting confused. DH and I went to the Muir Forest a few years back, and the redwoods there were absolutely stunning. Weird--hunting season for deer hasn't even started here yet.

I went to see Interstellar yesterday and did not think it lived up to all of the hype about it. It's long--2 hours and 49 minutes--and visually very breathtaking at times, but I wasn't satisfied with the story. I thought there were some big holes in it, especially the ending. I won't give any spoilers, but will say that the time-relativity thing just didn't make any sense to me. I also found the Hans Zimmer score for the film grating, and the recitation of the Dylan Thomas poem ( most famous lines, you will probably recognize from high school English: "Do not go gentle into that good night./ Rage against the dying of the light.") not once, but twice, pretentious and sappy. I would give it a B+ for the visuals and a B- for everything else, including the total absurdity of Anne Hathaway playing a physicist and spouting lines about wormholes and black holes and blah, blah, blah.

Josie, I read about BB over at Amazon. It sounds like it's a bodybuilder kind of workout from the reviews over there. Soon you will be really ripped!

Hi to Judy! (I think I am catching a cold and have started taking Cold-eez. Hope you feel better soon.)

Judy, I meant to say what a darling little kitty!

I think we saw only the first season of The Bridge... it was 13 episodes but we watched it on hulu plus. maybe there's a second season? I know I read that it was cancelled after 2 seasons. Liking it so far but do hope there is more and it's not available yet. Netflix shows a second season not available yet but will have to wait and see.

there are so many different hunting seasons..... this is for elk and is at higher elevation so has to be done before snow comes. some years there's plenty already. not being hunters, we don't follow things closely except to avoid being in the middle of it. this was our mistake. didn't know there was a big elk herd in the area. the info center should have mentioned it though. I am NOT brave enough to ride a bike into an area bristling with hundreds of hunters.

I thought that movie sounded tedious... I am not a big sci fi fan to begin with and it's a hard area for film makers.

we rode yesterday but only about 15 miles. it was sunny and pleasant. today weights and abs.

I enjoyed the redwoods but it is a lot like Washington state.... deep dark forest with big trees. ours are cedars but there is not a vast difference in look and feel. I'm glad they're preserved in parks and they're lovely but I didn't want to hike there very much. too much like home to me. to me, one day in big trees is enough! that is one reason why we went to another spot more inland but that didn't live up to the hype. a very active area where firefighters train for fires. so lots of noise with chain saws going, trees dropping, and then a shooting range not too far away. we could get away from the chain saws, but that involved heading closer to the shooting area. I'm bothered by loud noise like that. it was quiet after 4:30 but neither of us wanted to ride more there the next day. some trails were too hard for us too. so we headed back toward the redwoods but by then it was then raining a lot, not in the forecast but the coast is like that.

Strong work Deb... do you have a weight loss goal?

Good morning,

I did a treadmill workout this morning, ( iTrain). It was tough...but I did get through 34 minutes so I was happy with that.

Lori, wow, that's a lot of exercise for one day! Good for you for continuing with Chester's walks. I am so cold when we go outside, I don't even want to take the dogs around the block. It's like the older I get, the colder it feels. Now I get why people retire to Florida. Patio furniture? I still have pots and plants in the ground that need to be pulled up. Ugh.

Josie, so sorry to hear about your MIL. It is hard for sure to make that decision about a parent. Thanks for the review of BB. If Cathe's new workouts were not coming, I would buy it for sure.

Lynda, hope the Cold-eze helps to ward off any cold etc. Cudos to you for doing a barre workout for 62 minutes!! Those are killers. That movie doesn't sound good at all. This eating plan is only the first 21 days, where you eliminate all the stuff that may cause inflammation...after the 21 days you can add back things one at a time, like eggs, and some dairy ( I hope!), but right now I feel great, no cravings etc. Just in time for Thanksgiving! Yikes.

Valerie, yes, way too many hunting seasons....it's kind of scary at my new office which is right in the middle of what used to be wooded land. Lots of deer and turkey...hopefully no hunters get any ideas! Yes, I do have a weight loss goal of at least 10 pounds...my Dr wants me to lose it to see if my cholesterol will go down by doing that. I refuse to take any meds for it. My good cholesterol is very high, but he wants the overall total to go down.

Hi to Judy,

Work, but no class tonight!

Take care,

Good Morning Everyone,

Saturday DH and I spent the day in Birmingham, MI. It's a fun city with a lively downtown. Lots of shops and restaurants. We did a lot of walking then went to the gym in the evening and I did a tricep workout. Yesterday I did a short, easy indoor bike ride. I'm starting to feel a little better now and hopefully will get back to normal this week.

Lori-Cathe's Live cardio looks like fun. Definitely one that I will try out soon. I have a Polar Loop, I think it's similar to a fitbit. I've only used it a week but so far I like it.

Josie-I'm so sorry to hear about your MIL. I know that is very hard on you and your husband. I will keep you all in my prayers.

Lynda- I watched part of the first episode of "The Roosevelts" last night. It's very good, I think I will enjoy this series. I was able to stream from Amazon, which ends up being about $20 less than purchasing the DVDs would be. I hope you aren't getting sick too!

Valerie-Thanks! It sounds like you had a good trip but too bad about the show. The guy at the info station was a jerk for not warning you about all the hunters.

Deb-Great job on the weight loss! I also have a higher total cholesterol, (it's been around 200-221). My HDL and Triglycerides are very good though and I don't plan on taking any prescription medicine to lower the total.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Judy

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did PK's Bootcamp Boogie (63:00).

I have been taking Zicam quick-dissolve lozenges and they have really worked and are a lot easier (also twice as expensive) to take than the Cold-eez lozenges. I think I may have caught this in time.

Judy, I really enjoyed the Roosevelt saga. I still intend to ask my friends in history about a good biography of Teddy, who sounds like a really crazy character.

Valerie, there definitely was a second season of The Bridge, but I didn't watch it. I didn't know it had been cancelled for a third season. Interstellar wasn't tedious like Boyhood by any means. I just didn't think the ending made sense. I had to watch both Memento and Inception a couple times before I felt confident about what Nolan was doing, but I don't think another viewing would help me on this one. I always have problems with time travel. Nolan did have some high-powered physicist as a consultant on this one, so maybe it makes sense to physics geeks.

Window cleaners came today and everything looks so bright now.

Deb, I hadn't thought of that--Thanksgiving right after your 21 day period of exclusion. Maybe you won't want all the "fixins" and just turkey and green beans?? Looks like you are getting back to your workouts again--great!

Hi to Josie and Lori!

Josie that is sad.... I always hope people with alzheimers have heart attacks or strokes to end the process. so little to be done and so hard on family. we had very good experience with hospice for MIL and FIL. they were in fresno.

we did a hike this morning and my foot worked ok. 3 hrs 30 min, aroud 5 miles RT. yesterday I didn't do weights but did 30 on the elliptical plus an ab workout. sometimes I feel like all I do is work around injured body parts. foot seems to be close to normal again, at least as close as it can get with the deteriorated joint.

I will have my last 2 days of yoga this week, and then a couple weeks without classes. will try my current teacher at her new location, but it really might be too long a drive for early classes especially in winter. cold and dark and a long drive doesn't sound great. I could switch back to the current studio at a new location but would be all new instructors. no good choice here.

Deb, I hope this isn't too nosy of me because I know you are paying for the NG advice, but what do you eat for breakfast? I can't imagine what to eat if I had to exclude eggs, dairy, and cereal. I always have fruit but that's not enough by itself.

Lynda, I read somewhere that the Bridge was cancelled after 2 seasons. at the time I thought we had access to both seasons, but turns out this was only the first season. I read reviews on Netflix and maybe that's where I saw it. I'm not a big sci fi fan, I lose interest quickly. DH likes it more so I'm sure we'll probably see it eventually.
I'm trying to remember Memento.. was Guy Pearce in that one? I seem to remember giving up because I couldn't understand what was going on.
I agree on the zinc... I think it heads off colds for me if I get started early. taking an antihistamine helps me too, along with vit C. it's as if I can prevent the congestion from getting settled into my nose and throat , the whole thing winds down without me getting sick. .

Judy the guy at the Information center had more than one chance. DH talked to him on the phone about biking up there and was sure it was the same guy when we stopped the next day for a map. talked on and on about the "awesome" biking up there. he said nothing about it resembling a battlefield along that road. we asked about "dispersed camping" too and again he didn't mention that there would be serious competition for any space at all. I am not THAT sensitive, but this .....the sheer number of hunters and elaborate camps.... was absolutely ridiculous. we would have been crazy to continue.

Good morning,

I took a rest day today, even though we didn't have class last night. Just felt like I should. You think I could sleep past 4:00 am? nope.

Judy, glad you are feeling better. You caught it just in time. I wish my cholesterol was as low as yours!

Lynda, I think the next time I am at a drugstore, I am picking up some of those Zicams...just to have around. Yes, Thanksgiving....mmm...my favorite holiday meal too. I usually hear of people getting their windows done in the spring, but it would be nice to have it done in the fall so that you could see all the beautiful leaf changes too.

Valerie, it's too bad about the yoga studio situation, maybe you will be able to get used to the new instructors and like them. Breakfast is usually some version of oatmeal. She has a couple of different recipes for it that are pretty good. There is also one that you use a butternut squash and make a pudding, that is like a dessert, with maple syrup, coconut milk and walnuts. I usually have one breakfast sausage link with whatever I have. It's a frozen one, that is probably not allowed on the plan, but I figure I am following it about 99% and one sausage link won't hurt.

Hi to Lori, & Josie,

Work, ( the boss is in town for the week), then home to crash,

Take care,

That doesn't sound that bad.... I didn't think oats were GF? thought they have less gluten than wheat but still had some. I eat oatmeal a most of the year, with fruit and almond milk. I failed at coconut milk... weird mouth feel. I use skim milk in my latte. I like almond milk and use the lower sugar/calorie version but much more protein from in dairy milk. I keep a closer eye on protein to make sure I get enough as I'm not much of a carnivore and lean toward vegetarian sources. glad diet is working for you.

I got only a little sore from my hike yesterday. I picked the particular hike because it was a short drive, short and steep without a huge incentive to keep going if my foot was bothering me. we're getting the arctic blast and all the wet surfaces..about 99.9% of the way will be ice by today. I'm of achy all over but foot is fine. we didn't hike much for a month and it's steep uphill, steep downhill, with a pack. so general aches nothing serious.

I keep zicam, vit c., otc antihistamine on hand. if I feel like a cold coming. I get on it right away, rest, and a good part of the time I will dodge a full bore headcold.

I'm not sure with yoga.. either choice is a longer drive. we had a good group of people who showed up t/th am. I think this will probably split up the group with some going one place, others to the other place.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Burn Sets ch, ba, sh (50:16).

Deb, these new Zicam lozenges are really great because they dissolve so quickly and don't upset my stomach. Really seems to be working too. Summer brings a lot of bird, pollen, and insect stuff on our screens and windows so we have it done twice a year. Maybe when you retire you can sleep longer in the mornings.

Valerie, yes, Guy Pearce (or is it Pierce?) has short-term memory loss and is trying to solve a murder, so he writes notes to himself and even writes things on his arms, hands, chest to keep track of what he's learned. It's a very cerebral film, worth watching more than once for the twists and turns it takes. Okay, so this astrophysicist over at Huffington Post who apparently didn't think the science was at all right in Gravity is really happy with the science in Interstellar. I read a lot of his tweets over at Huffington Post and think I understand the time thing better. Apparently the pull of gravity slows time down--bends it or something. I have never thought of time as dimensional, but as a psychological phenomenon peculiar to consciousness. I just don't understand why it would, then of necessity, affect the aging process. The pull of gravity by a black hole also explains this humongous tsunami they confront on one of the planets they are trying to explore to see if it can be home for us because our planet is doomed--global warming has made it impossible to grow anything but corn. I still don't 'get' the ending, but my curiosity is piqued.

Sounds like we are in for some very cold weather come Thursday. Ugh! I saw a bit of what's been happening in the Midwest with this polar blast.

Hi to Josie, Lori, and Judy!

Good evening ladies!

Sunday's hike was great. Weather turned out nicer than anticipated. We tracked the mileage with our fitbits and to our surprise it was 5.3 miles. It was a tough hike because of all the leaves so it was a bit slippery. Yesterday was my rest day. Today I did Cathe Live's metobolic circuit blast. It has a good workout. Not too crazy intense. I then did SB's supported barre. Felt the legs burn with this one as they were already tired going into it.

Deb...sounds like you are doing really well with both the NG and exercising. I wish I could stick to a plan like that but know I could never. Too much preparation for me. My bad cholesterol is at 130. You may think this is not too bad but because I have type 2 diabetes it needs to be below 100. So hard to do this!!!! I just filled a prescription but have not started taking it yet. Dr. recommends because I just can't get it to go lower. Patio furniture is put away! :)

Josie..glad you are enjoying BB. I hear it is a great program. I always read the threads when I see it come up. Peole love them. So sad to hear about your MIL.

Lynda...I am excited about SB's new DVD. I have plenty of points with my amex points with amazon and will be putting them to good use the second it goes on sale. I have been checking daily. I always chuckle when I read Bootcamp Boogie. :). Buurrrrr getting ready for the cold coming our way.

Valerie...we were spent after our five mile hike. Do not know how you do the miles you do! Hiking is a serious workout. Some of the inclines are so steep like you mention. This particular hike we did is very rocky so this was a challenge. Lots of rock climbers come to this area too so it is kind of cool to hike past them while they are doing their thing.

Judy...I laughed when I read you did a nice "easy" indoor bike ride! I bet my easy and your easy are very different!!

Good morning,

I got up today and did a Walk Fit treadmill workout. Felt good. I could not believe that I went to dinner last night with my manager and a co-worker from Michigan, we went to a great Italian restaurant and I didn't touch the bread, got a baked scrod with steamed vegetable, and a salad, no pasta or potatoes which was part of the entrée. It didn't even bother me at all. Amazing.

Valerie, I think you can buy GF oats, but I just use the plain old fashioned ones that I have. That is why I say I am following about 98%. Yes, protein is tough to get if you don't eat a lot of meat. Do you eat chicken or turkey? Glad your foot is better. Are you still considering surgery?

Lynda, yes, plan for retiring is sleeping a bit later, but I love the mornings, I don't mind getting up early, but not at 4:00 am! I can always take a nap right? The dinner last night made be anxious about retiring. The 2 guys I had dinner with have been friends for years and I am really going to miss the camaraderie that we have.

Lori, good job on the hike, and putting away that patio furniture :) I really want to try BB...almost wish I didn't order this new series, but I will stay with my KCM's and treadmill for now, waiting for the new DVD's.

Hi to Judy & Josie,

Take care,

Good morning ladies! I overslept this morning so no workout. One minute it was 4:50AM then the next was 6:36AM. I must have shut the alarms off instead of snooze! Ugh hate when this happens.

Deb...wow! great will power at dinner. Good for you.

Lynda...I just checked Amazon and the DVD is up, however, you can order but it does say in stock on November 15 (Saturday). I placed my order. Like I need another workout DVD. With Cathe's Live and her new DVD's coming out plus SB Streaming I really have move than I will ever need! But yet I still ordered!! LOL!

Have a great day ladies. I'll check in later tonight.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Cardio Supersets (41:30).

Very impressive willpower on the dinner, Deb! NG is definitely working for you. I like my mornings, too. Sleeping-in for me is 7:30 or 8:00.

Lori, thanks for the heads up on the SB. I will head over to Amazon to order. A 5 mile hike is excellent exercise, especially for the legs. What kind of medication will you be taking? I'm bracing for the cold--of course on my birthday Saturday, the coldest probably, and the beginning of gray drizzles.

Josie, I hope your MIL is settled into hospice care without too much trouble. Very sad to see once vibrant people just 'disappear' with dementia.

Hi to Judy and Valerie!

Deb, I eat chicken breasts sometimes. turkey on thanksgiving. we have ground turkey occasionally throughout the year but that's about it. tilapia usually once night a week. I get salmon occasionally as DH really hates it and then I have to make 2 things for dinner. I don't worry about getting enough protein because my diet is quite varied and I get some eggs, dairy, cheese. always with an eye to the calories. strong work on the dinner! I would need some carbs in there or there would be war. not a ton, but some. that's why you lost 2 pounds and I didn't! I will need surgery at some point but not feeling like rushing into it. I need at least one more opinion but it feels good knowing exactly what the issue is, and that it's not what I thought. if I'm functioning well I may stall a while.

we did another hike today. probably about 6-7 miles. it was snowy/icy and pretty cold to begin with but sunny and pleasant, warm in the sun. walking on slippery stuff is more of a challenge. we have microspikes that work so well for hard packed snow/ ice and so easy to use, nothing like crampons. inexpensive and a fabulous invention. fair amount of elevation gain up and down about 5 1/2 hours. didn't go all the way to the top because that part gets too steep for me unless it's dry, like in summer. only a few hundred feet different but not stressful without the last section.

Lori too bad but once in a while you need a break and if you were sleeping well enough to go thru the alarms it probably was for the better. we get up normally about 5:30 which works well. no alarms needed.

Good morning,
I did one of KCM's KB workouts this morning, woke up at 3:30, could not get back to sleep so got up and did the workout.

Lori, you must have needed the rest yesterday. Yes, great job on the hike!

Lynda, Happy (early) Birthday! Any plans? dinner out? Is that local restaurant doing those comfort food dinners again this winter?

Valerie, You make 6-7 miles sound like nothing...it's amazing to me.

Hi to Judy & Josie,

Work, then right to a wake since I will be halfway there...

Take care,

http://www.rei.com/product/856702/kahtoola-microspikes-traction-system
these type of devices are available everywhere. microspikes. they don't weigh a lot and go on any shoe or boot. they're great for walking packed snow/ice especially downhill. the red part is a stretchy rubbery material and they collapse into a tiny little bundle when off. they make walking on slippery surfaces so much easier. I bought some as soon as I saw them. the one thing you need to keep in mind is that they are deadly slippery on smooth surfaces, like going from an icy parking lot to inside a store. you need to get them OFF before you walk inside! I have an older pair of something similar
Deb I did get pretty tired after yesterday., but it was so pretty out it helps take the sting out.

Off to my last yoga class for a while.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Flex Train (56:36).

Deb, yes, we will be going out for dinner at Mezze's with friends on Saturday. 3:30 A. M.! Maybe you are still not on Daylight Savings, since that would have been 4:30 A.M. a few weeks ago. They won't start the comfort Sunday meals until after New Year's when the business really slows down.

Impressive hiking Valerie!

Lori, I put in my order for the new SB, and decided to order a Classical Stretch workout and book by Miranda Esmonde-White as well. The book is titled Aging Backwards--just what I need now that my birthday approaches. I have always wanted to try a Classical Stretch, and this one for the core had some positive reviews. I'm looking forward to the new SB as well.
