Good morning,

The wedding was very nice, of course the bride was beautiful.

I just wanted to get us started, will be back a little later to see what's going on with everyone.

Good morning ladies!

Up early today for no reason. Not sure what the workout will be today. Too early to decide!!

Lynda...I did make it to Mockingjay yesterday and I loved it! I recently reread the book so it was very fresh in my mind and I thought they did a great job. Very sad to see Philip Seymour Hoffman. Liked they dedicated the film to him. The podcast sounds great. I love my Audible account. I read on my kindle at night then sync to audible when I am in the car, walking chester or housemax.

Judy...glad you had a nice time in Indiana. Love your workout buddies! :)

Deb...I love going to weddings! Glad you enjoyed it.

Valerie...I am so use to painting without tape. At first it was really hard but now it does not phase me at all.

No plans for the day. Breakfast with DH then football later.

Hi to Josie!

I did 30 on the elliptical, core 1 and then got on the treadmill and ran for 10 minutes. If my foot was unhappy I didn't want to overdo.. but it's OK this morning. a LONG time since I ran but I don't want to do too much too soon and revisit the hairline break/ tendonitis. my shoulder is still sore. wish I knew what I did to it but it seems to be slowly less uncomfortable. convoluted way of saying it's very slowly improving. I miss my upper body workouts and really most of cathe workouts use a weight and arm motion, and I've had to stop all that. I'm even trying to do a lot of things left handed and have stopped using a shoulder bag because it was so inflamed.

we got a little snow and very cold, for us , that is. you will all laugh, except for Josie!. about 20 degrees out there right now so we are hooking up the hummingbird feeder warming light so the food doesn't keep freezing. had to rotate the feeders in and out all day yesterday. we want to go for a walk today and they will freeze quickly without some heat. this is just a big lightbulb hung from plumbers tape. only need it occasionally, but need to keep my feathered friends happy. I read something about them expanding their range even to places like Boise because so many people feed them that they can handle much colder weather than previously.

Judy what great workout helpers! my kitty ...too funny .he'd get on the treadmill and get dumped off the back. he learned not to do that but so funny to see the look on his face as he zipped backwards.
the carpet place we shopped at had a "working" kitty. very friendly, came right up to us.... cats know who likes them and who doesn't. great judges of character. lots of businesses have kitties and I always think it's so pleasant and says a lot about the people there.

Good Morning Everyone,

Not sure what workout I will do today, maybe I will take a rest day since the Spinerval Challenge starts tomorrow.

Deb-glad the wedding went well. I hope you have a relaxing Sunday.

Lori-We are going to be painting our living room soon. We went to a furniture store yesterday and ordered a new entertainment center and coffee table. DH is getting into home repair/remodel mode right now.

Valerie-I agree, cats do know who likes them and who doesn't. DH's family loves cats, and there were two at his cousin's house. They were a little shy but they did come right up to us when we sat down. DH's aunt takes care of feral cats and his other cousin is involved with cat rescues. Now I know where DH got his love of cats from.

Hi to Lynda & Josie,

Judy

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did BarreAmped Bootcamp (70:00). Didn't quite finish the stretch.

Lori, I really liked Mockingjay Part I as well, but I wish we didn't have to wait so long for the next part. They have finished filming, so why not bring out part 2 sooner? Serial is fascinating. Now I can't wait for the next installment on Thursday. Reminds me of when I was a little girl and all we had was a radio. Apparently there are websites devoted to chatter about this podcast. I'm inclined to think he's innocent because there are some really sketchy characters involved in testimony against him. But then I wonder like the reporter about who else would want to kill this girl?

Valerie, maybe you should get an MRI on your shoulder. When I did, it was tendonitis and I had a cortisone shot that worked almost immediately with the pain.

Beautiful kitties Judy!

Hope your test results are clarified tomorrow Deb!

Hi to Josie!

Good morning,

My last day of vacation, then it's back to the grind tomorrow. It was nice while it lasted.

Lori, now that you and Lynda mentioned that movie, I think I will go over and see what the book is all about. What's an "audible" account? Is it with Apple?

Valerie, I agree, might be time for an MRI for your shoulder, just to make sure there is nothing seriously wrong.

Judy, love the kitty pics, so cute! lucky you that your DH gets into remodel mode etc. I don't ever have that happen here! We do big things like roofs, gutters, furnaces, but no remodeling unless it's a big thing like a bathroom. All the big things that require hiring someone. I am hoping to so some small projects when I retire, like painting a bathroom or something like that.

Lynda, what is "Serial"....something free on iTunes? you purchase it like you would a song?

I plan on doing some organizing and tossing today, unless a better offer comes from somewhere!

Hi to Josie,

Take care,

I had DH check my shoulder yesterday. I know, I know, live with a retired doc and why didn't I have him do it sooner.... I can hear what you're all thinking. I was pretty sure it was tendonitis because there was no injury, just too many push ups one day a month or so ago. and then I kept trying to do things and re-aggravating it. He's sure it's tendonitis and it IS getting better if I avoid using it and making it hurt. I'm not in a sling or anything. I can't get MRI's due to the pacer. can't even get close to that big magnetic field!. it's an unpleasant reminder that I'm "wired". an MRI image is best but no. I could get an ultrasound but chances great are an orthopod would do the same exam DH did, and tell me to go home and rest it. I babied it this weekend.... did 20 min on the bike at 20 mph, 25 on the treadmill and core 2 workout skipping the side planks. there's a pretty specific area that's sore, the area right on the front of the joint that protests when I resist attempts to move it. Today is free day at the new yoga studio but I won't go because I'd be tempted to do more than I should and now that it's settling down I don't want to go back to the beginning.

we meet our plumber today. DH has talked to him several times and feels OK about him, and our neighbor has used him. we will get a better idea of the timing of this project because he has to advise us on the shower pan and dimensions and be sure the leak was as limited as we think it was. and then get on his schedule. then we can get going on the other elements of this.

ETA we will probably see a movie next week with cousin & wife. the choices are Gone Girl, Interstellar, & Mockingjay... and some comedies I don't want to see. Of those three, which was most worthwhile? I am tending to GG because I didn't like the first two Hunger games and this one sounds boring with people generally complaining that it was dragged out to make room for a second installment.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did RK with 1 lb. gloves (55:16).

Deb, Serial is a podcast of an NPR series that broadcasts on Thursdays. Have you never heard of "This American Life"? DH and I have really enjoyed their podcasts when we are on a long car ride to Boston or the Jersey Shore. Serial is a continuous series of podcasts about a murder in Baltimore in 1999 that an investigative reporter is revisiting because it really does not make much sense. Yes, it's free, and you can listen to it on your IPad or computer at the website for Serial. Nine episodes so far. Unless you have read the trilogy by Suzanne Collins (The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay), I don't think the film would make much sense for you. It's a YA series of novels that I originally read at the recommendation of one of my students who wanted to write about Katniss as a strong heroine who saves herself. This student particularly hated the Twilight series of books because the heroine in them was constantly being saved by either a werewolf or a vampire, both vying for her affections. I think I already recommended Moriarty's novel, Big Little Lies, to you if you are looking for something good to read. It turns out that they will be making a HBO series with Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman based on this novel. Should be great.

Valerie, GG is your best bet. Why not a cortisone shot? Instant relief for me, and I was tired of taking ibuprofen, which didn't work that well. The pain was keeping me up at night, too.

Making turkey enchiladas tonight with leftovers and a turkey soup this morning for later in the week. Love Thanksgiving leftovers!

Hi,

I just got back from the DR. All tests were normal. He said he could refer me to a cardiologist, but they would wonder what I was doing there. He mentioned asthma, if the breathing thing ( sometimes hard to catch my breath) but we will see how it goes. I am scheduled to see him again in Feb to follow up on blood work stuff.

Anyone have any info on supplements that are supposed to lower cholesterol? My cousin takes some red rice pills ?) I think that's what they are, and she thinks that helps with hers.

I guess I should go back to the workouts and stop worrying about it.

Take care,

Just found this....yikes! I think I will stay away from this stuff:

Is Red Yeast Rice a Drug or a Supplement?
Confusingly, the answer is both. One of the most important ingredients in red yeast rice is monacolin K. It's also known as lovastatin, the active ingredient in the prescription drug Mevacor.
So on one hand, red yeast rice is a traditional remedy that helps lower cholesterol. On the other, the pharmaceutical manufacturer of Mevacor argues that it owns the rights to the ingredient lovastatin.
This confusion extends to how the supplement is sold in the U.S. Because red yeast rice contains a substance classified as a prescription drug, the FDA has attempted to control its sale. In 2007, the FDA asked that three red yeast rice products -- Cholestrix by Sunburst Organics and two red yeast rice formulations by Swanson Healthcare Products (Red Yeast Rice and Red Yeast Rice/Policosonal Complex) -- be withdrawn from the market because they contained lovastatin. The FDA cited a risk of severe muscle problems that could lead to kidney disease.
Despite the FDA's attempts, many people in the U.S. still manage to get similar red yeast rice extracts from other countries or the Internet

Deb, you might try checking the Peoples Pharmacy ( the Graedons) to look for possible supplements to cut cholesterol. I know red yeast rice has the same ingredient that statin drugs (like Lipitor) contain and a decent per cent of people get muscle pain when they take it. however, a lot of people take statins without a problem. DH could not take Lipitor and even though he eats well.... low fat, no red meat, sat fat, trans fat, eggs rarely, etc, it really made no difference in his cholesterol number which is high, with a very low HDL. He decided not to worry. no one in his family has heart problems...they all get cancer! DH quickly got muscle soreness even taking a low dose of Lipitor a couple times a week. you should not take both red yeast rice and an additional prescription medication.

Lynda thanks for the movie evaluations. that was why I decided on probably GG ... the others may have different ideas. will see how it goes.
My shoulder is dramatically better today after just a 2 days of resting it. I hear the needle for the shot would give me pause. if it weren't getting better, I'd make an appt but it's a lot better today so i'll wait a little longer doing nothing to stress it. If I'd known it would hang on this long I would have done it 3 weeks ago.

Good evening ladies!

For some reason I slept great last night for a Sunday and first day back from vacation. Ended up being a rest day though. Did not get up my usual time and came home late from work.

Deb...great news test were normal. I have been given a prescription for Lipitor but still have yet to start taking them. I am really trying hard diet wise to reduce cholesterol. It is so hard though. Audible.com is owned by Amazon. Instead of digital books that you read you get Audio of the books to listen to. I have had it for a couple years now and love it. Love to listen to books while commuting to work or walking chester.

Valerie...I think Gone Girl is the best choice if you did not like the hunger games. My son went with me and enjoyed it not knowing anything about it. Funny that it took a while for you to ask your doctor husband to look at your shoulder. Tendonitis can be so painful.

Lynda...funny you should mention Twilight! I just started reading the series over the weekend. I like vampire and witch books. One minute I am reading about Patton the next vampires. Go figure!

Hi to Josie and Judy!!

Good morning,

Late class last night, didn't get home until 10:00.

Valerie, I read the book, "Gone Girl" and I thought it was pretty good. I fully understand about asking your DH to look at your shoulder. :). If I refuse to take any of the prescribed statin drugs, I am certainly not going to take something that is OTC that contains the same ingredient, but may or may not have been checked out by the FDA etc.. I will check out that web site you mentioned. My number is very high, with a very high HDL. That is the only reason the DR lets me go without the meds. John had the same reaction to Lipitor.

Lynda, once I had "posted" my note about the movie, I remembered that it was part of the Hunger Games series, which I never got into. I did read that book, "Bit, Little Lies" and liked it a lot.

Lori, thanks for the info about audible.com. When you figure out how to reduce that overall cholesterol number, let me know. LOL! I had agreed with the DR that I would loose 10 pounds before seeing him again. He thinks that would help. I have not gotten there yet, maybe 5 would help.

Hi to Josie, & Judy,

Take care,

Deb, that is what is so confounding about cholesterol levels.... DH exercises and eats the same as I do...well, he eats way more, but the same stuff, is not overweight (oh he could lose 10 lbs) exercises but my levels are textbook perfect, while his are not very good. his HDL is something like 30. mine is 75. so it makes sense that the same approach doesn't work for everyone.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did Athletic Training (56:00). I am alternating this with Flex Train for a total body workout each week. I think this one is more challenging aerobically though.

Deb, that's good news on the tests. I don't have any advice on drugs. My doctor says my cholesterol is a bit high, but my HDL is very (!) high, so he doesn't think I need any drugs. There is one additional test he did a couple years ago--for triglycerides?(maybe Valerie knows)--that also indicated I didn't have much to worry about. If you liked Big Little Lies, I bet you would like Liane Moriarty's other books: The Husband's Secret, What Alice Forgot, The Last Anniversary. High quality chick-lit.

Lori
, after what my student told me about those books, I have absolutely no interest, even though I really like Justin Cronin's The Passage and The Twelve. She said that there are these really creepy passages where Edward just wanders into Bella's room at night and stares at her sleeping. Twihards (the fans of this series) can buy life-size cutouts of Edward to stand in their rooms at night. My niece had a life-size cutout of Justin Bieber and would scare my SIL with it by leaving it in various closets. Open a door and SURPRISE! Cracked me up.

Valerie, as long as I can't see the needle, it doesn't bother me at all. If you go to Interstellar instead, there is a book about its science by some super-astrophysicist. I couldn't really understand the stuff about time relativity, gravity around black holes, wormholes, or the fifth dimension, and didn't want to try to read a book about it.

Hi to Josie and Judy!

It sounds like the people we're seeing the movie with are set on Hunger Games. not my choice, I'll be a good sport and deal with it. we're using up gift cards and eating at the Melting Pot. I looked it up and not enthused. anyone ever eat at one? It sounds like a chain. apparently fondue is back, who knew?

Triglycerides are usually part of a general blood chemistry screening panel. my levels are low and as expected, DH is high. no surprise.

Deb, the Peoples Pharmacy runs in the sunday paper here. I've never had very good luck looking things up on their web site. not sure if it's my problem or theirs, but their focus is on home remedy things rather than big Pharma. a lot of it is input from readers so not necessarily accurate, but more word-of -mouth stuff.

I never did 'get" the vampire business. I find it totally uninteresting and not even creepy, just silly. the twilight business is based at a town not too far from here, Forks.

ETA a cutout of Justin Bieber of ANY size would scare the pants off me!!. Aghh!! Creepy..way worse than vampires!!

Good evening ladies!

Just finished Cathe Live Hardstikes and followed up with punching drills from Cardo kicks. Works out to about 60 minutes. No morning workout as I did not sleep at all between my little Nilla coughing again ( like last time and came out of nowhere) and my DH snoring unusually loud. It was a miserable night for me!!!! It's 8pm and I will be going to bed soon. I will be asleep before my head hits the pillow!

I know my tastes in books goes from one extreme to another. I loved Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Slayer! Read the book and saw the movie. So far I am enjoying Twilight. After I read the books I'll be sure to watch the movies too. I also love love history and murder mysteries. I read all the fifty shades of grey too.
My favorite book and movie is Gone with the Wind.

Valerie...yes that's right it is based out of Forks. I loved Mockingjay and enjoyed it more than the 2nd one. Never heard of the melting pot. The thought of a fondue with a bunch of people does not appeal to me. Would die if anyone double dips!!! Let us know how it is. I am real curious.

Lynda....a full size cardboard of anyone in my befroom would scare me to death too! My son has a couple large World of Warcraft cardboard beasts in the basement where I workout. They were promo stands that he received when he worked at Gamestop. At first it was weird working out with them but I am used to them now. :)

Deb...I have really struggled with my cholesterol. My bad is at 130 but I need to be below 100 because of type 2. I managed to get to 103 a few years ago but I was eating so clean it was ridiculous and no way could I maintain that way of eating permanently. Some people can and god bless them! I eat fairly balanced but can do better so that is what I am trying right now is just to do better and see what happens. Hoping DH hops on the band wagon too.

Judy....new furniture and new paint! Your home will look beautiful when done. Great that DH is into the remodel mode. My DH is in to watching me in the remodel mode!!!! :)

Hi to Josie!

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did a 60 minute Spinerval and today I did a 90 minute one. Tonight I went to the gym with DH and worked on my dips. Still not able to do body weight yet, but getting there.

Valerie-I'm glad your shoulder is better. I think I have tendonitis in my left hip/glute area. I might think about getting a cortisone shot if it isn't better after the holidays.

Deb-that's great news about the heart tests! Some supplements that I know of that are said to lower cholesterol are Policosanol and Guggulsterones. They are not like the Red Yeast Rice, which is basically a natural statin.

Lori-Great job with Hard Strikes! I need to do that again. I hope you get some good rest tonight.

Hi to Lynda and Josie!

Judy

Good morning & Happy Wednesday!

Cold & rainy here today, but no snow, so that is good.

Valerie, my HDL is 98. Overall is 314. Yikes! That is the number I want to get down. I have never tried the Melting Pot, but my friend did. Yes, fondue is back! I think if you go with a group of people, it could be fun. I'm with you on the cutout of Justin Bieber! Ugh...

Lynda, thanks for the book recommendations. I put them all on my "to read" list. LOL on the life size cutouts and your niece.

Lori, you sure to have a variety of taste when it comes to books and movies! My favorite book and movie is To Kill a Mockingbird. I still can't understand what people liked in the "Shades of Grey" books. I read about a quarter of the first one and took it back to the library. Did your DH decide to not do Nutrisystem or WW?

Judy, Spinning for 90 minutes! Good job! Thanks for the tip on the supplements. I will go and look them up.

Hi to Josie,

Take care,

when I looked up Melting Pot it sounded like you ordered pots of melted cheese indifferent flavors and dipped bread, vegies, meat into them. I just can't picture this as "weight watcher" friendly. I know it's only one meal but I love cheese but I can do serious damage. I limit quantities and frequency. I do better if I order something specific and get my own plate. Besides we will be sitting watching a movie all afternoon. I guess I'll be getting a salad and tying one hand behind my back! I can get my full days worth of WW points easily in one meal if it's cheese based.

Deb, Judy said it better than I did. yes, red yeast rice is a natural statin but because it's non 'drug' form you can't be sure how much you are getting, how standard the quantity is. for a while people were dividing total chol by HDL and getting a index number, yours is 3.2 but I'm not sure if that index is used to judge the overall lipid status anymore. I'll see if I can find what's being used currently.

there are multiple dietary approaches to lowering cholesterol ( diet trends come and go!) but the same thing doesn't work for everyone. "studies" are always a little hard to interpret. it's hard to be sure how honest people are when reporting what they ate, either because of ignorance, or poor records, or a bias to try to impress the researcher. Basically people lie, especially about what they eat, drink, and weigh. .
Low fat, high complex carb, tight limits on cheese, eggs., meat works for me. but it doesn't work as well for DH. We tried the Dean Ornish basically "no fat" vegetarian approach but I couldn't stand the food. no fat= no flavor. there are people who swear by the Paleo/south Beach approach but I can't eat all that meat and low/no carbs. DH gets what I cook and I'm not doing 2 completely different menus.
Deb, http://www.peoplespharmacy.com/ about 4 questions down there's one about glucosamine/chrondroitin supplements raising cholesterol in some people. this ran in the paper a couple days ago. I take this stuff, I know a lot of people who do, but never had a problem as far as I know. do you? most of the things they print are not "proven" by big scale double blind studies but some are worth a try. I don't believe one approach works for everyone.

wow Judy, spinning for 90!. I was proud of 25!
