Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 11/29

Hi Ladies,

Today is a Kevin wo. I might start going to spinning after the wo and get more cardio.
I also need to increase my time on the saddle for the road trip.

I have a friend that is a tri-athlete and is coming over on Monday to give me tips on the gear shifting and position on my bike. I'm still on the trainer. He told me that once I'm comfortable with the shifting and clipping and un-clipping he will ride with me on the streets.

Joan, I’m a very loyal partner and it keeps me on track when I have a good one.

Valerie, I’m with you on the mindless wo outside and the treadmill. I used to take step, but the choreography started to get too complicated to me. I turned me off.

Cathy, how are you doing and how are the grandkids?

Deb, I have the same trouble with jeans with the low rise. I used to wear hip-huggers when I was in Jr. High and High school they don't fit me anymore. Regarding the advance wo with Kevin, its jus heavier weight and more difficult sets.

Garance, are you reading anything interesting right now?

Josie

I agree Josie, if it's called "choreography" forget it. I don't like complicated story lines etc when I'm on a treadmill. mindless drivel suits me fine! music alone doesn't work for me, I need to watch something. so I didn't even look at shock cardio although I'm sure it's up to cathe's usual high standards.

we got in our cardio yesterday. Did a lovely snowshoe in the north cascades. a gorgeous sunny day, spectacular. we paid with almost 6 weeks of rain and clouds so we deserved a nice day and finally got one. a 6 hour trip about 7 miles RT. I wish I was more agile on snowshoes. I have narrow ones but still step on my own feet. Men generally walk wider apart than women and have less trouble. It's easy to say "just walk wider" but it's hard on hips, knees, ankles to make your stride different than what it is, at least for more than a few yards. the snow was frozen solid, quite different from last week when we wallowed around up to our butts. I find it easier going uphill than down and my 'shoes have a heel lift bar that eases the stress on the achilles. you can walk uphill on very steep icy snow and never lose your grip. going down is a little dicier. it was absolutely gorgeous out and we sat in the sun at a view spot looking at Mt shuksan and mt baker and all the surrounding peaks. just gorgeous.

tuesday I did my regular yoga class and GS chest triceps just before dinner. Boy, am I maxed out on turkey leftovers. I pitched what was left yesterday... just could NOT face more turkey. too much is too much.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did DM Cardio and upper body premix (60 min.).

Deb, those look like the right balls. I think the smaller size is probably better, but I am not sure. I will have to measure mine. Lucky Brand jeans come in a variety of rises, and since I hate low-slung jeans, I go with Easy Rider, which is almost at the waist. They have a bit of stretch to them, which I also really like better than straight denim.

Valerie, I love to snowshoe! We have 135 acres on the side of a mountain, and when it is snowy, we go for a big hike snowshoeing on it. It's just so quiet--and a very good workout. I love step choreography at Cathe's level of difficulty, which is not impossible. Once I learn it, it's mindless for me. But I also love dancing and cardio with a bit of fun. I think Yoga is totally boring.

I just ordered two new DVDs from Collagevideo: Petra Kolber's Bootcamp Boogie and Cardio Barre: Ultimate Advanced. I will let you know what they are like when I try them.

Joan, I had a grapefruit-size fibroid, too, and had a hysterectomy by laparoscopy. Could not stand the bleeding. I'm like Elliot--my playground ball has Cinderellas and other Disney heroines.

Josie, I am reading Sue Grafton's latest installment--U is for Undertow--but I have just ordered Anne Tyler's new one. I read everything by her. If you have not read Tyler, try Breathing Lessons or Ladder of Years. She is wonderful and often very funny and moving.

Hi to Cathy!

Hi ladies,

I did Step Works and recorded my horrible eating. I had preplanned a 1200 calorie day and all was well until dinner. Total calories for day was 1908.

Garance Because I had no problems with fibroid they didn't want to do anything about it. I guess a fat belly doesn't count as a problem.

You can hook up an ipod to my new treadmill so I may get some cardio coach downloads. Right now I have 2 cc cd's.
I am not that fast on treadmill so tv or books on tape are usually what keep me going.

Joan

Finally Friday!

Hi all,

No workout, I tried to get some extra sleep, DH was snoring at about 1:00 am and I was ready to hit the couch, when he woke up and said he would go downstairs with the dogs so I could try to get more sleep. I woke up at 4:00 but went back to sleep until about 5:20.

I got my Cathe 20 # vest yesterday. Not sure when I will use it, I am hoping to try subbing Physique 57 for leg work for a bit and see if that helps.

Valerie, I'm with you on the cardio. I love the treadmill, sort of like kickbox, but Cathe's step routines are too complicated for me. I used to do Gin Miller all the time and liked them. DH has snowshoes and has used them but it has been a while. I never tried, I am not so happy in the cold weather outside.

Josie, good going on getting the bike partner to help.

Garance, DH picked up a 8 and 1/2 inch playground ball at Dick's Sporting Goods. it looks bigger than what they use on the DVD...is that the right size? I'm glad you reminded me of the new Sue Grafton, I requested it at the library after reading here. I had forgotten to request it.

Joan, I don't think you use the CC with the hook ups on the treadmill, I thought you had to have special workouts for that. You were up very late again I see. Maybe you should try calorie ziz zagging? This is where you eat very low ( no lower than 1200) calories for 3 days, then have one day of about 1800, then go back to low again. this is supposed to stimulate your metabolism. Unfortunately, the high calorie day is not supposed to include all the "good" stuff that I like to eat, only more of the boring "clean" foods. I am again trying to read The Clean Eating book by Tosca Reno ( sp) not sure if that is how you spell her name right now...she is in the forefront of Clean Eating magazine.

I have a wedding to go to tomorrow, anyone have any exciting plans for the weekend?

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Physique 57 legs and abs (30 min.) with 2 miles of Leslie cackling and shrieking on 4 Fast Miles. She is absolutely obnoxious on this one and there's no way of turning her off. But I also like the really fast mile and the music.

Deb, my playground ball is 8" in diameter. DH and I have a Christmas party to go to this evening, and the Christmas walk is tomorrow.

Joan, you are really lucky that your fibroid didn't cause you any trouble. I, on the other hand, was dangerously anemic from the bleeding. I did not have a big tummy, though, either before or after the hysterectomy, which was, by the way, not a big deal. I was back exercising within a week and went home the day after.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Hi Ladies,

I did not wo yesterday or today, instead my DD and I went to dinner at a place called the Cheese and Olive Tratoria (sp). They have great Italian food. I shared some calamari with DD and I ordered the fussily with bolognese sauce and had 2 glasses of Chianti plus a few killer garlic rolls. It was so good!

Tomorrow I will wo with Kevin and spinning and Sunday I will be spinning.
No plans for the weekend.

Have a great weekend!

Josie

Good evening,

Deb This treadmill has both the ifit and hook up for ipod so it's the speakers. I still have to adjust treadmill but don't have to wear ear piece.
I don't like to take pills either. I hope there is something that helps your sleep.

I cleaned house today and used 2193 calories. That is more than any day with a dvd. I have to decide if I want to do anything else.

Joan

deb, have you tried either Advil PM or Tylenol PM? they have benadryl (an antihistamine) that tends to make people sleepy. It helps me when I can't sleep. I have a long history of sleep issues but most of the true "sleep meds" can be troublesome long term. either of these is OTC and not risky. I take one if I wake up at midnight and don't feel like I'll get back to sleep. If you've got any aches( don't we all) it eases that and the benadryl makes most people sleepy.
I don't take one at bedtime since I fall asleep quickly, I just can't fall back to sleep after I get awakened in the middle of the night. I'm mostly decaffeinated , which helps. I have a tiny bit of "real" coffee early in the am and that's it.

Saturday

Good Morning,

Lots to do today. DH and I are going to the bathroom fixture place that our conractor recommended to see if we can pick out some things for the remodeling. That, and HouseMax, plus a wedding to go to tonight.

Garance, I think the ball is almost the same, I tried squeezing it between my knees and it worked out ok. I am still trying to put a rotation together where I do the Physique 57 workout 2-3 times a week, plus cardio, plus upper body..,mmm...I don't want to not do enough cardio. Have fun at the Christmas walk.

Josie, that restaurant sounds wonderful!

Joan, pretty fancy treadmill, I would like not wearing the ear pieces, but I guess I am used to them now.

Valerie, thanks for reminding me of the Advil PM etc. I will try those again. I don;t want to be groggy when the alarm rings at 4:00! I also do a little bit of caffinated coffee in the am, then switch to all decafe drinks for the rest of the day.

Off to do errands! Have a great weekend everyone.

don't worry, neither will make you groggy. they are nowhere near strong enough to do that. I think the relief of minor aches and pains goes the first step, and then the benadryl makes many people drowsy.
I 've had trouble sleeping thru the night for years and have tried just about everything out there. most of the low level stuff doesn't help me at all.. like melatonin. I got the caffeine out of everything ... soda, coffee, tea, chocolate. it's another delightful issue that comes with getting older. ambien works pretty well as does small dose of xanax but those are for "special occasions" like before a plane trip or trying to sleep in a motel. I would never use them regularly.

I got in stationary bike and treadmill time yesterday along with some serious running around shopping etc. today maybe STS disk 1. I need to restart it sometime and maybe today will be the day.

Good evening all,

Today was 3.5 miles on treadmill. I got ds a treadmill for Christmas and it was delivered today also but the screws weren't in the box so they couldn't put it together. I thought it was a giant conspiracy because they didn't have time to deliver everything and still put together treadmills. They did get mine thank heavens. I need to get more time in on exercise. I'm still recording calories and they are still too high.

All my Christmas movies are on vhs so I am watching them while I walk. I hope they get me in the Christmas spirit.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Joan
