Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 11/22

Hi everyone--

This morning I did the RWH legs with the blasts and core work (53:20).

Deb, I still have one more disk to watch for A Place to Call Home, the second season. I really do enjoy it and will regret when it's over. My MIL is a bell ringer for a church in Florida and they do have friends at a clubhouse. FIL is also a very good gardener, so he can do a bit of that.

So I finally figured it out: Selena is J-Lo and Serena is J-Law. No, Lori, I haven't seen either one of these films. That's a good idea about seeing the first Mockingjay film before going to the second one, because I have read that the opening really starts EXACTLY where the first one stops, and I remember thinking how abrupt the ending was. Glad I made you laugh. I also thought it was funny because my niece at the time was in love with Justin Bieber and bought a life-size cutout of him. She would scare my SIL by putting him in closets and other unexpected places as a joke.

Judy, Twihards were Twilight diehard fans--mostly women and girls. One of my other students wrote a paper on the Disney animated heroines, and how they have evolved over the years. The most disturbing one was Ariel, who was willing to give up her beautiful voice in order to become human (she was a mermaid) and marry a prince. Disney has tried to come up with more active heroines, not dependent on male saviors to wake them up or find the girl with the right foot for a glass slipper she lost and save her from a wicked stepmother and nasty step sisters. The other thing about a lot of these films is that they usually have what are known as "phallic mothers" as villains--they would just as soon eat you up or poison you.

Valerie, a 26.5 mile ride is, as Deb says, a marathon. I don't blame you for neglecting your upper body workouts when you have done that much. I don't like Ashton Kutcher very much, but I did hear he had a startling resemblance to Jobs in that film.

Enjoy your family, Josie!

That was actually my yesterday's post. I forgot to hit post reply.

Happy thanksgiving!

This morning I did AB (54 min).

All 4 guests are off doing a 5k turkey trot this morning. Fun having them here. My older son and his woman friend said they had a big announcement and I thought here we go again (he just got divorced). But no. Instead he and she are buying two miniature schnauzers, both females. They are living together though. The younger son has been seeing his woman friend for quite awhile but still not living together.

Everyone enjoy your day!

Goodmorning ladies! Happy Thanksgiving!

This morning was RWH Plyo 1 and 2. Wow this had my heart pumping. I read once in Cathe's newsletter that it helps all the bad eating on a day like this if you do a hiit workout. So I did both plyo's because I know I will be really bad today!!!

Lynda...awesome the guest have left to run. I have never done a turkey trot. Funny about the big announcement. Yes you are correct I meant to type J law for serena. The book was good.

Deb! Bless you feeding all those people! 57 degrees as I type this. How are you making out with refrigerator space since it is too warm?

Valerie...yes agree the ride and widelife sounds fabulous! Congrats on DH 's new bike.

I am in Boston right now waiting at the train station for my friend to arrive from NY. Traffic wasn't as bad as I thought and very happy about this. Beautiful day too. Hate driving to Boston when it is rainy.

Have a great day all!

Deb. when I'm not sure about something, like the bench, I move it "front and center" and make a absolute point of using it. If it still seems unusable , give way or donate. I got rid of a regular step.... I hate step, kept it because thought I'd find a use for it, or get better at it No. gave it away. I have a high step. works for the little step I do, like dead lifts on a platform.

we're better at not keeping "stuff" . used to keep old bikes thinking "guests". never happens. we trade oldies in, and stick with 2 bikes each. the new bike doesn't fit old bike rack well, and doesn't hang well in the garage. frame is a bit different and cables in new places . wheels are bigger... 29 in.. we'll give new unused spare parts to the bike shop.

Happy Turkey Day everyone!.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

This morning I did Yoga Tune-up, Lower Body and the neck section from Upper Body.

We are having a quiet day at home. We picked up a couple of steaks yesterday that I will fix later. Otherwise, we
aren't really doing anything special today. We had been planning to go to Indiana to see DH's family but
decided to make that a Christmas trip instead.

Deb-thanks for checking on the KCM forum, I was wondering what was going on with her new dvds.
I agree about Amanda being a somewhat "reluctant" modifier. I was surprised that she was the modifier.

Lynda-are they getting 2 Schnauzer puppies or older dogs? My neighbor has one named Greta, and she is so cute!
I haven't done a Turkey Trot since 2006. The one I did was in Davenport, IA and was 5 miles. I did it every year from
94-06.
That's interesting about the animated Disney heroines too.

Valerie-I agree about Jobs- I love Apple products but it's disturbing to see how he behaved and treated the people around him.
Nice that your DH got a new bike! That's always a fun thing to do! DH and I are going to try to get a short ride in since the snow melted and it's in the mid 50's this afternoon.

Lori-after doing Plyo 1 & 2 I think you can eat anything you want today!

Hi to Josie!

Good morning,

The dinner turned out great, lots of fun with relatives, kids and good food. ....everyone brings something so it all comes together that way. I couldn't do it if they didn't. We had 27 people for appetizers, my house was wall to wall people, dogs, kids, etc. One funny thing, ( well we thought funny), out of the 20 people we had at dinner, 5 of them are named Mike.

Lynda, is A Place to Call Home going to have a 3rd season or is it over after the second? Great your in-laws are busy in Florida, I find that anyone that "winters" there usually has lots to do. 3 of my guests did the local Turkey Trot too....the one here is the longest running race in the country...or at least that is what they claim. I think yesterday was the 120th or something like that.

Lori, I should have taken your lead and done some HIIT workout yesterday too. So much food....I watched myself and did not eat any appetizers...maybe one square of cheese...We did ok with the lack of refrigeration....coolers and ice in the garage. Enjoy your weekend with your friend.

Valerie, will you need to get a new bike rack?

Josie, how was your dinner? Lots of fun with the Peanuts I assume. :).

Judy, a nice quiet day...that sounds great. That will be our day today, except for the clean up part.

House clean up today, ....I just do a little at a time until it is finished....no Black Friday shopping for me!

Take care,

Our dinner went well too. all 4 of us!!. but that's all that are left in this area. next family is Portland, and that is one nasty drive on a holiday weekend. I made a turkey breast roast again. less fuss, no carcass, all white meat. the only drawback is no reasonable way to make gravy. they give a packet of stuff with the turkey but only so-so . I'm not a gravy fan but I make decent scratch gravy if I have the basic parts. DH is a good house cleaner so he did that while I cooked. works well plus it keeps him mostly out of the kitchen.

we were playing with the I-pad, phones, apple TV. we signed up for a free month trial with Netflix streaming. Nice to see some more new choices. we may keep hulu and Netflix but will see. I'd told DH that the main complaint I read about Netflix streaming is fewer choices, and sure enough when he tried to find things on our DVD queue, most were not streamable.

I am SO not a competitive shopper.. no way would I go near a mall. Deb, our garage "bike racks" are large padded hooks. might need to reposition them. the car rack, not sure yet. I want to ride my old bike again, and then try out new bikes. sizing has changed toward bigger wheels, different gearing. Our bikes are 13 years old! and a hard 13 years.... mine fell off the rack on the freeway at 70 mph. we ran back and grabbed it. only a pedal needed replacing. then DH backed the bikes into the front of the bricks on the garage with fairly minor damage. New bikes have gone to 27.5 " or 29" wheels depending on frame size. DH got a 29. I think 27.5 for me. 29's felt too big. we'll see how they fit on the current rack before deciding. bike store had several of the gigantic tire bikes for sand or snow.

congrats to Judy & Lori for fitting in workouts. I didn't. I controlled my food intake pretty well though. Lynda, too funny about the "big announcement"!. getting dogs is really a commitment though, unless it's driven by one person more than the other. schnauzers are so darn cute.

I don't care much for ashton Kutcher, but he did an admirable job in the film, was believable and sometimes closely resembled Jobs. I'm still curious about the strange posture. I will still see the newer Fassbender one when it's out.

posting a link to the terry bicycle site. shows women's riding tights. some have a chamois, others don't, same with ankle zips. I found Craft tights on sale at a different shop a couple years ago and got them for about $50. they are very nice. the ankle zips make it possible to turn the extra length under. Last year DH got me a pair of petite coolweather tights. reg length is too long. these are the best choices I've found. I haven't seen petite length riding tights anywhere else.

Good morning,

Beautiful day yesterday, I think it got up to around 57...After putting a lot of stuff away, we went to the downtown central library, John wanted to look at a rare book display they were featuring, then went to lunch down there.

Valerie, glad your dinner went well...as I always say, the number of people isn't that important, until you get beyond what you can sit at your dining room table....the work preparing is basically the same. If you don't mind me asking, how much do they charge for Netflix streaming? Do you think it is better than Hulu? When you said the new bike did not fit the bike rack, I assumed you meant the car rack....that could get pricey if you need to get a new one of those.

Judy, Josie, Lynda, Lori, hope you had a great holiday!

Not much going on here....no class today. We are going to see a couple that is singing at our local coffee shop tonight..jazz duet I believe...

Take care,

Good morning ladies!

Lots of food and lots of fun. My friend is here until tomorrow so hard to workout since he is staying in my son's area, which is next to my workout area. Yesterday it was fine because I needed a rest day after the plyo workouts plus staying up late. Ok and maybe too much wine. :) Last night before we all went to bed I grabbed some weights and bands so I can workout upstairs and not bother him. Not sure what I will end up with but I am sure it will be a good one. Tonight we are going to The Old Mill for my favorite chicken pot pie after we see Mockingjay. Another high caloric day. :(

Deb...does your dinning room hold that many people? Must be huge. Glad all was successful. Hilarious with so many Mike's. Weather has been crazy here too. Loving it though!

Valerie...I would love my DH to be a good house cleaner. He tries but I swear he cleans with his eyes closed. I know that sounds mean. I do appreciate what he does. Yes that is correct about Netflix streaming. The inventory is no where near what you can get on DVD. We love it though mostly because we have been streaming older TV shows. We only stream. We used to do both but cancelled the dvd plan.

Judy...last year we did the same thing. Just the two of us and we loved it. The plan was to do this again this year but when my friend had no place to go of course we invited him. Then we felt like we needed to add to our menu to make sure he had a great Thanksgiving. More work then we intended but would not have had it any other way.

Lynda..how about this weather! Hope you had a lovely time with your family.

Josie...same thing - hope your dnner and day with your family was just a lovely!

One thing I should have said on Thursday is I am very thankful for this group. I am thankful for the support and comradery we share. Also, very thankful that you all keep me acountable for my workouts. I love that somewhere in our posts we always talk about our workout of the day or what we are planning. Realy motivates me. :)

Deb, I'm not sure on streaming cost... we have a free month to evaluate.think it's $10 or so will compare to choices on hulu. . Like Lori confirmed, the selection is better with the mail program, but there's the wait time, and sometimes wait lists. with streaming the choices are less, but it's instant. Hulu is adding more commercials to its programming.
Yes it's the car rack. the mt bikes wheels are bigger, cables run in new spots. doesn't fit well on old rack. Rack is close to 15 yo. replacing it is overdue.
All those Mikes! too funny. my DH is a "Mike "too, although he prefers Michael.

Went mt biking yesterday. DH loves loves his new bike. right at the start, my chain fell off. cable needs replacing or adjusting. I got the chain back on, could only shift on the rear chain ring. will look at the bikes again and order a new Trek one. they didn't have exactly what I need.... "short people" whining about choices again. men and (a lot of women) fit the slightly larger sizes stores carry. I had to do this with my road bike, order an unseen, untested bike. The one I want is bright blue. I'd prefer black but only comes in one color. That was how I got a red road bike. the bike shop has been fair to us though. together, we've bought 7 bikes from them.
It was extremely busy outdoors yesterday, it was sunny clear and cold. seems like a lot of people went with REI's suggestion and spent the day outside rather than at the mall. the state parks were BUSY.

Lori that is so kind of you!. sometimes the most obvious things get overlooked..... I agree. I'm thankful too for the interesting and supportive group here. It's not easy to find people to talk about exercise, movies, family matters, current events and have everyone get along.
I'm the one who cleans with my eyes closed.... DH actually does a far better job.

Hi everyone--

I did AB on Thanksgiving (54:00) but nothing either yesterday or today. Stayed up too late both nights watching films with my sons and their women friends.

We had a great time at Thanksgiving. My older son apparently did the Turkey Trot in record time. He ran the 400 and 800 meter in college and I guess he is still pretty fast. I like both of these new women a lot. We also went up to Manchester outlets yesterday--or my older son and the two young women, because my younger son was off playing golf. Unbelievable weather. We didn't even wear jackets because it was close to 70. There was almost a carnival like atmosphere shopping and not too crazy. Both of them are real Kate Spade lovers and bought the same handbag at 60% off. They were thrilled and now I know how crazy they are for Kate Spade. They also bought some Ralph Lauren Polo casual clothes, and I bought a pair of Coach sunglasses, an Eileen Fisher coat and sweater. DH says other women collect shoes but I collect coats. I think he's right. This one is white and very plain. A sample in petite small that fit me perfectly and at a ridiculously low price. Very elegant. I will probably wear it 4-5 times a year when we go out, but I do love it. My older son helped set up my Thunderbolt screen and mouse for my at-home office, which I love. The grandparents were delighted to meet these new women and had a great time. Our friends came with two pies and a green bean dish, but my pumpkin roulade was gone first. Very yummy! Thank you, Ina! They also brought a gorgeous photo of Max, framed. I will see if I can take a picture of the picture and post it.

Judy, they are getting two schnauzer puppies. The breeder sent some pictures today. Soooo cute. They both have home office setups, so it won't be like they are gone all day--or so they both say. My older son is travelling an awful lot right now. They are very excited about the puppies, which I can believe because they pay so much attention to Max.

I am kind of sad, because neither son will be home for Christmas, instead spending time with their women friends' families.

Valerie, I think some of the new workouts use the step, but if you have a tall step, I guess you won't have trouble. I just never had a weight bench.

Lori, I am very grateful for this group too and it just seems to boost my morale every morning to get up and get going no matter what.

Very raw here today--only in the 30s and drizzling after such a wonderful gift of good weather yesterday.

Sounds as though everyone had a great holiday.

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did a segment of Core Max and today I walked with DH for 45 minutes. I might do a short weight workout tonight. So far my plan to stay with active rest is working and I don't feel as sore as I did last week.
Today DH and I went to Birmingham for my birthday, which is next Tuesday. We had lunch at Cosi. I had Chipotle Pumpkin soup, which was delicious!

Deb-that is funny about all the Mikes. It got into the 60's here on Thanksgiving and yesterday, but it rained so much that we couldn't really do anything outside.

Lori-that was very thoughtful of you to change your plans and invite your friend to spend Thanksgiving with you.
I am also thankful for this group and the encouragement and support that all of you give. I look forward to checking in and reading posts every day.

Valerie-I hope you get your new bike soon! I'm sure you will love it! Thanks for the link, I really like those Terry bike tights. I might have to order a pair.

Lynda-I bet the puppies will be adorable! It sounds like you had a great Thanksgiving with your family!
It's freezing here today too, a rude awakening after several unseasonably warm days.

Hi to Josie!
