Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 11/20

Linda, I don't know the answer to that. My mother is 92 and never had one either. my father didn't either. I'm guessing a lot of old people had older doctors and their training was a product of their time and they maybe didn't push it.

My perspective is influenced by DH who has a bad family history. I think the older thinking was that if you didn't have a bad family history, and weren't "having problems" to not push the issue too hard. doctors don't like to push unpopular ideas any more than anyone else, and plenty of folks flat out refuse, regardless. You tell people they need to do it, and many say they will, and then they don't. we used to send stool cards home with people to collect samples at home in the privacy of their own bathroom, bring back to the office for processing. Even those didn't come back very often. also, why put people thru testing if they aren't in good enough shape to survive surgery if something were found.

I personally think Katie Couric did more to raise awareness than anyone else. I was a bit squeamish until I watched her go thru it publicly in response to her husband's untimely death. and recently , Dr. Oz, with his surprise polyps. when public figures talk about the topic, everyone else feels freer to talk too.
I think colon cancer is a bit like breast cancer, which, when I was young was a very hush-hush topic. the word "breast" wasn't spoken in polite company. back then it was whispered. now people talk more freely.
It also used to be a much bigger deal surgery than it is now. polyps are snipped off , no big deal. many resections are done laparoscopically without big abdominal incisions so people are rarely too old to survive surgery. the prep has been also refined too so not everyone has to drink the gallon of Golytely.... up to the doctor and what he thinks will work best. anyway, I'm scheduled for Dec 5 and like any normal person I'm dreading it but will do it anyway.

On another topic I'm thinking about ordering a couple of the disks from the LIS that I didn't get. could AT be done with a high step? same question for Cardio supersets. considering TB trisets depending on what kind of deals show up for the holidays. I don't think I'd enjoy the barre one.

with MIL, we tried and tried. we thought the FIL would be a likely candidate since his father died of colon ca but he refused. You can't drag people but we tried on many many occasions.

Good evening,

My mother is 85 and had her first and only colonoscopy in her 70's. There were no polyps and they said she didn't have to come back. I'm a little surprised they didn't mention it to your parents.

Unfortunately once you get into your 80's most doctors think you will die soon anyway so why spend money on keeping you healthy.

I am so disappointed. My favorite waitress has been fired. I had it all set up so she would just order me grilled chicken and steamed broccoli without giving me a chance to change my order. There is a new manager and he didn't want to give the experienced waitresses better hours than the new ones. Since she could only work on weekends when she had free babysitter, they let her go. She could handle twice the number of customers of anyone there.

Joan

Hi all,

Busy day. We were up and out early, went for breakfast, went to Kohl's early, then came back and put the rest of Thanksgiving mess away. Doing laundry right now, and have a play to go to at 4:00.

Valerie, which disks are you going to get? You would probably like all of them except the barre and Yoga ones although I have not even viewed some of them yet, so can't help you decide. I had polyps twice so had to have colonoscopy every 3 years for a while, then when I had no polyps, they went to every 5 years. I complain about having to get them, but it's probalby one of the best procedures you can have for early detection. My good friends father died of colon cancer, and she refuses to get one. I keep nagging her, she is in a high risk group and should have had one done 15 years ago.

Joan, don't you just hate when you find a restaurant and waitress that understands that you may want something a little different, and obliges you, then they leave? Some restaurant owners/managers don't really care about the customer, it's what THEY think you should want.

Hi to all later posters, what's eveyone up to today?

Hi Deb, Joan, and Valerie--

This morning was Housemax. It is very warm and sunny for November--mid sixties. Love it.

Valerie, I think you could do Athletic Training on a high step, and there really is no choreography, just a lot of repeaters of various kinds. The side-to-side lunges might be a little cramped, but otherwise you would be fine. I have not done the bonus step routine for either Cardio Supersets or Low Impact Challenge, so I really don't know what it's like.

I am off to see Melancholia, the Lars Von Trier film, this afternoon. I hope it's as good as Dogville.

I guess you will have to ask the new waitress to put in that special order for you, Joan. Can't hurt to try.

Garance, I'm sure waitress would put in special order. But none of them would remember the next week when you came in again. I'm lucky to get my ice tea refilled with the other staff. I will just try out other restaurants around us.
