Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 11/15

Good morning & Happy Hump Day,

Not a good day yesterday, as I was putting a book in the book drop at the library, a guy backed out of his parking space and into the front fender of my car. This was the Saab, not the one I crunched last month. Just what I needed a week before putting it into storage.

Lori, I hope Chester is doing well. You are probably right, those collars may not be enough to keep Chester away from that ear. Like everyone else mentioned: I ARMED BURPEES??? Nice...:).

Valerie, what caused the swelling etc in his eye? We have a small picnic type grill that John used to use to grill outside at the office sometimes, it has a small refillable tank that might work with a smaller Dragon. I don't need anything that would need to be rolled on a cart, we have a very small yard, nothing like what you have. I'll have to think about the fabric issue.

Lynda, hope your appointment went well and you do not need the root canal..I went over to the Face book page, saw some cattle, are those calves? I pictured them a lot smaller...LOL....city girl...

Hi to Josie & Judy,

Busy day today, meeting at the bank, then I'm supposed to go get the estimate on the car from the guy's insurance adjuster, agility class, and a club meeting tonight..Lots of driving around....

Take care,

Deb, so you are on a first name basis with people at the body shop now?? bummer!.
Dh has a blocked gland near his eye, but treatment is hot soaks which we'd started already. it will take time to settle down but seems to get better after he's up and around. he says it hurts but doesn't look too bad.
A smaller Dragon set up is probable a smaller flame, not as hot and easier to focus on small areas. mine really is a torch! there are all kinds of landscape fabric. If it's exposed, it will probably burn or melt. If it's under rocks or gravel it's probably OK.

we ended up with a heck of a storm yesterday. I went shopping mid afternoon during a lull in the storm but after a mile ran into sheets of blowing rain, wind, standing water. trees down. our power went out yesterday afternoon. just came up again this morning. shuts down everything except water for us. ate a "candlelight dinner", watched a series disk on the laptop, wood stove for heat. woke up to sleet and wind but settling down now.

ETA I got interrupted but posted, and Lynda has posted since. so I'm out of order!
car camera / mirrors sound great and should be a huge help backing out of parking spaces into traffic, like stalls in mall parking. so many fender benders! cousin has a backup camera on his Honda. used it to parallel park. OMG. I will say if you never learned to park maybe it's OK, but we jockeyed around for 5+ minutes to get into the space. forward, back, forward, back..... It was painful! I'd use it selectively. BIL showed us how he uses his to load /unload his boat from a trailer by himself, and that was very useful. Our '14 didn't have those features. we didn't want the GPS and maybe the electronics package is all or nothing.

Lynda, best of luck with the possible procedure. I hate/dread anything dental. I am a spreader like your DH. and I like paper. I love maps.
I need to go look at the baby cows... the power was flicking on and off yesterday. I shut everything down rather than fry my computer .
almost a workout yesterday, and the power went out. had the bike set up, clothes on and that was the end of it.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did RK with 1 lb. gloves (55:15).

What a bummer, Deb! I was going to mention this when there was a discussion of new cars and seat belt chimes as a problem when taking them off to back up. My 2015 CRV has a rear view camera and the two side rear view mirrors have these extensions to cover blind spots. It's really nifty to see where you are backing up without leaning over the back to check it out. Too bad the guy who ran into you didn't have this. You also get a measurement line to tell you how far you are from something in back of you. Yes, those are calves about 8 mos. old. I think they still have pretty sweet faces. Sigh! The endodontist wasn't absolutely certain, but she did schedule an appointment for me, when she will re-evaluate before going forward with the procedure. It might be a small crack that had bacteria in it. I currently don't seem to be having any problems.

Valerie, that storm sounds wild. Hope your DH feels better soon.

Lori, I mentioned Chester's problem to DH and he remembered our last dog (a huskie shepherd mix) had the same problem. After the operation, his one ear refused to stand up, and it flopped over a bit. Made him look rather jaunty like a movie dog.

I am consulting with a professional organizer this afternoon. I have to move out of my current office, and I want to set up something at home in addition to the office I am moving to on campus next semester. A rather complicated set of issues involving computers, files, books, and DH's tendency at home to just spread out stuff everywhere and aggrandize space. I told him he was like Putin, because he has taken over half of my sewing room.

Good morning,

Not a good night..we had our dog club meeting, which did not go well. I cannot get to sleep after that kind of stuff...At times I wonder why we are members at all. It's sometimes not worth the aggravation. Why do some people have to act like middle school kids?

Valerie, glad the eye issue with your DH is clearing up...Actually, this was the other car, so now I am on first name basis with 2 different collision shops. :) I was pleasantly surprised that the other guy's insurance adjuster actually estimated the damage at $10 over what the Saab dealer gave me. We must be having those storms like you had nation wide. I have the back-up camera on my new Subaru, but I don't find myself trusting it...I still turn around to back up.

Lynda, good for you for getting that professional organizer ..I would need a professional "de-clutterer" first! It's nice that you still get an office on campus after retirement. John is also one that uses every flat surface he finds to put "stuff" on...when we bought our new dining room set, I only agreed to buy the one he wanted if he would promise not to put stuff on the table etc...It is the only room in our house that is not cluttered with his stuff. LOL.

Edited to ask: What series are the weight Tri-sets workouts from?

Hi to Lori, Judy & Josie,

Shopping for Thanksgiving today..I hope the stores are not too busy...

Take care,

Hi Everyone,

Tuesday I did an almost 2 hour Spinerval, I rode 35 miles in 1 hr and 50 minutes. Yesterday I did Body Beast Chest & Tris and the ab workout that comes with it. The workout was challenging enough, but Sagi's form or lack of form and the inconsistent speed of the reps is annoying. I guess when you are used to Cathe's quality, those things stand out. The ab workout, which was 10 minutes, was pretty basic and easy compared to the 10 minute core workouts that are in XTrain and RWH. The other thing that I don't care for are the commercials on every Body Beast DVD for Beach Body supplements. I can fast forward through them but still annoying.

Deb-I'm sorry about your car & about the dog club meeting. It's too bad people have to spoil things that should be pleasant :(
I think Tri-Sets is in the Low Impact Series from 2011.

Valerie-That sounds like a horrible storm! It rained all day yesterday here. Hope your DH is feeling better soon.

Lynda-the calves are sweet looking! I'd love to have a professional organizer help us in the condo. We don't have much space to work with so even though I try to keep things organized it doesn't always look that way.

Hi to Lori & Josie!

Judy

Lynda, the calves are way bigger than I thought a calf would be. Big guys! lovely fall colors.

Strong work Judy.. You really do great indoor rides. I have trouble after half an hour, but next time I will wear padded shorts and see if that helps.
we did a mt bike yesterday afternoon. 1 hr 41 minutes. tree farm but trails are closed for the season although the roads are still Ok to use, so we did mostly those. fair number of trees and debris down including one we had to carry/drag the bikes over. this storm did a lot of damage.

Deb, I would probably not entirely trust a back up camera at first either. maybe that's good, because it's probably good ROM exercise to turn to look behind you.
Not exactly the same thing but I see people who get so dependent on their devices...phones, gps that they have no idea where they are! if their battery died or device failed, I don't think they'd get home. it seems to be generational .... with younger people so dependent they have no concept, mental map of where they are and where they want to go. plug in the address on the phone and if it's wrong, they'd drive off a cliff following the voice. and these are otherwise very smart people.
I have trouble sleeping if I get all revved up in the evening. I seem to need many hours to calm down or else it keeps me awake. even congenial get togethers, I just get too hyper to sleep after. so we end our evenings early now. must be a part of getting older.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did AB (54:00).

Deb, Judy is right--the trisets are part of the LIS. The music on the upper body premix is kind of weird, and you do a lot of stuff on the ball rather than your step as a bench. That's too bad people can't get along. What do they fight about anyway?? Alas, I will probably have to move again at the end of next semester (June 30). There's always an office somewhere, but I hoped this one would be permanent. This building will return to being faculty housing. The street is zoned for housing, not offices, but the college had so many building projects, the town let them convert this lovely Victorian painted lady into faculty offices while the projects were being done.

Judy, that is a long Spinerval. Good for you! DH is happy about the professional organizer. It means he doesn't have to do a lot of indoor handyman kinds of things. Definitely worth it for both of us.

Valerie, Herefords are particularly stout looking--shorter legs than Holsteins and much better-tempered. Dairy cows tend to be kind of skinny because all of their food goes toward milk production, while Herefords are definitely beefers. I don't have problems getting to sleep, but if something is preying on my mind (like this move) and I wake up in the middle of the night, I have a very hard time getting back to sleep. I just start going over something ad nauseam. After living in NYC for a few years, I am a great parallel parker. You have to move your car back and forth every day for the trash pickup. People put signs in their windows if they need to use their cars. Otherwise it's double parking on one side of the street every day.

Hi to Lori and Josie!

Hi Ladies,

I went to bodypump this morning and had to cancel Karina because my DH is not feeling well. This morning when I was backing up to go to class I hit the bricks at the end of my flower bed and knocked it down and scratched the rim on the back tire in the drivers side. I have a backup camera, but I also don't feel comfortable using it and always look back except for this morning :(.

Today would have been my DB Juan's 57 birthday and that is probably why I was not paying attention. I felt a bit strange when I woke up this morning. I guess that I was just missing him. He has been gone 25 years, but I still miss him everyday. He and I were very close.

Yesterday I went spinning and the instructor talked the whole time, I don't think she even took a breath and the guy next to me stunk. I could not wait to get out of there.

Deb, my DH also stacks up our dinning room table with crap. I bought him a couple of file cabinets, but once those were full he went back to the table.

Garance, I wish I could get an organizer for my DH ;)

Judy, I admire how long you can stay on your spinning bike. I'm with Valerie, I can only do 30-45 minutes on mine.

Lori, hope Chester is doing better.

Josie

I did as road ride today , 15 miles. the trail is not cleaned up from the windstorm. our regular route was not possible. downed trees and big chunky debris. BAD for tires! we started our reg ride quit & returned, drove to another trailhead and rode that. probably about 90 min of actual riding with all the stops, starts, slowdowns. .had to slow way down in the areas with branches and leaves. I still max out at about 2 1/2 hours on a bike seat. outdoors is better than indoors. doesn't matter much what about padding. the spin bike I've been riding unpadded because I keep getting the rear part of the pad caught on the tip of the bike seat with all the up and down moves.

Josie that is too bad about the stinky guy. that would take down my enthusiasm immediately. such a sweaty activity, you would think people would be aware and careful. too bad about the car ding. we seem to be having an epidemic of car issues! our outback has a bunch of dings. parking lots!

DH and I work at keeping things put away and not stacking on the counters or tables. not perfect, however.

Chester is healing. Just not adjusting to the cone very well. Sorry I have not posted. I hurt my back Tuesday evening trying to get him in the house. He goes out side but will not come back in. He is so afraid of going thru doorways. I tried to move him along and strained myself a bit. I'll catch up on posts tomorrow.

Happy Friday!

We got about half of the shopping done, still the perishables to get and another turkey. I will start to get the house ready Monday.

Judy, great ride! You are our "Spinerval Queen" :)

Valerie, great ride, even with the stops & starts!

Lynda, too bad about having to move again in June and losing the office that you like so much. I didn't realize that there are facility that actually live on campus. I used to be a great parallel parker as well....when I lived on the west side of the city, there were no driveways and we lived on a narrow one way street...that is great practice for parallel parking too.

Josie, oh no! Sorry about your car....you did exactly what I did with my Subaru a few weeks ago, only mine was the front fender. So sorry about your DB....Our dining room table is the only flat space with nothing on it...:).

Lori, poor Chester, and poor you! I can see how he would be afraid of going through doorways.. Hope things are better today.

Any fun plans for the weekend?

A workout, ( I've been slacking this week) and I have to hit the paper filing...the den is just a mess of papers that need to be either filed or shredded....

Take care,

Hi everyone--

This morning I did Jazzercise Dance Hiit (48:00).

Deb, faculty don't live right on campus. The college owns a lot of housing close to campus and new faculty rent from the college until they either get tenure (when people then decide usually to buy a house), or leave for another job, or don't get tenure and must leave. I was thinking about seeing Mockingjay Part 2 this weekend, but I'm worried it will be very crowded. I will be doing my Thanksgiving shopping on Sunday. That includes a lot of extra food for houseguests because both of my sons are bringing their women friends. Should be fun.

Lori, poor Chester! He's such a big fella it must really stymy him when he comes to doorways. Hope your back gets better quickly. Nothing worse than a pulled muscle there.

Josie, that sounds like an awful gym experience. I know what you mean about missing dead loved ones. I was especially close to the sister who was 4 years older than I and always think about her on her birthday.

Valerie, you're right about just keeping up with paper accumulation.

Hi to Judy, the spinerval queen!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Good evening ladies!

My back is better. I took it easy the past few day and used the inversion table several times. I did workout this morning and did Cathe's most recent from Thursday - Blast, Barre and Bands. I kept it low impact as not to push things. I really liked it and will try it doing high impact next week.

Chester is doing much better. He still hesitates but now knows all he needs to do is just plow through. Omg! The house is a mess! It is like having a bull running around! Being as large as he is and then a huge cone on his head, we have had to move everything around and out of the way to accomodate him. Thank goodness we are not entertaining this Thanksgiving.

Deb...I am so sorry about your car!!!! I feel so bad for you!!! Are you planning to do the Trisets? I have this dvd and have never done the workout. Can't wait to hear your thoughts. How many come to your home for Thanksgiving? I am thinking you have a large crowd.

Valerie...so when you say torch do you mean a blow torch? That is what I am trying to picture. We have an electric stove too but it is our only option. I like Lynda's idea of buying them in a jar. I can see why you need to slow down due to leaves. I bet you could easily wipe out if careless. Funny how things are now. Years ago I remember having friends writing out directions to their house. When we did family trips my mom contacted triple A for the trip routes! My DS would not know what to do with out his GPS.

Lynda...good for you having an organizer. That sounds wonderfull. I am on vacation starting today and the plan is to declutter. Wish me luck because I will need it. I have not looked at the calves but hearing you describe them has me intrigued. I have not lost a sibling but I miss my mom so much as we were extremely close. Her birthday and anniversary are coming up in December.

Judy...wow great spinerval ride. Sorry that you seem to be some what disappointed in Body Beast. It has never interested me. I will check out the new ones with Autumn Calabrese when they come out. I like her a lot so will be interesting to see them. I just bought her new 21 Day Fix cookbook. I have only flipped through it but like what I see.

Josie...oh no you too with your car!!! 25 years ... He must have been a young man when he past. I can't imagine working out next to someone that stinks! I will admit I chuckled reading your comments. How many do you have over for Thanksgiving? A ton I bet with the size of your family. My DH does the same thing. Leaves his crap all over the table. Drives me nuts!!

The only plans I have this weekend is starting the great declutter! I am so excited to do this. It is amazing over the years how stuff just builds in the basement...out of site out of mind I guess.

Our hike this morning didn't work. a whole lot of trees down at the beginning of the trail, and a lot of damage on the road to get there. this really was quite the storm. we tried crawling over under around & thru, but concluded that it was more trouble than it would be worth, as usually there will be more trouble if the wind was bad there. so came home and did some yard stuff etc. not a hard day. we probably didn't go half a mile.

Lori ..gad your back is better.... the torch is a long handle with a metal tip that connects by a hose to a 5 gal propane tank sitting on a carrier. people use them to clear weeds and brush. (and roast peppers) I use the jarred ones too but it's fun to do fresh ones. the torch is very hot, an intense adjustable flame, and can do damage!!! so need to be careful how and where you use one. you can rid gravel, concrete, and rocky areas quickly of weeds and grass without using chemicals. this area is all electric too, but the new ovens don't broil. if the door is closed you can't see to see if it's getting done or a cinder. I never use the broiler.

I was thinking about the stinky person issue, and I'd say no recent shower is no question bad, but an overload of cologne/aftershave is equally awful. I can taste it in the air.
chester sounds like a sweetie who is feeling pretty good ........... I know all the stuff my little cat (with his collar) knocked over so hope you were prepared!

I try but don't always succeed to handle paper one time. save, sort, toss. I also eliminated a lot of junk mail by canceling it so it doesn't get here to begin with.

this is my set up. it is deadly!

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did Pyramids Lower Body. I'd forgotten how much I like that workout! I think I will alternate Pyramids with Body Beast for the next couple of weeks. I do want to stay with Body Beast a little longer, even though I'm not crazy about it. I will be happy when ICE and the new KCM workouts arrive, then I'll put Body Beast away or encourage DH to use it.
Today I did another longer Spinerval, a little over 2 hours. It was an easy endurance ride, zone 2 heart rate. Now back to strength and core for the weekend.

Valerie-I always wear padded shorts for my indoor rides, they make a difference. I am in awe of your mountain bike rides! I find mountain biking to be so challenging that 45 minutes is probably the most I could do. I think it's much more challenging than riding indoors.

Deb-We cleaned out our office a couple of months ago and we now have 6 boxes of paper that needs to be shredded sitting in the hallway outside of the office. Our township has a recycle day twice a year, and they will do the shredding for free. I think the next one is in April.

Josie-So sorry about your DB :(

Lori-I'm glad Chester is doing better and that your back is better. I was a little disappointed in Body Beast but it's not so bad that I won't use it. In fact I like the shoulder workout alot and will probably do that one regularly. I'm optimistic that DH will enjoy Body Beast too. I've never seen any of Autumn Calabrese's workouts.

Lynda-I didn't know that you lived in NYC for a few years. If you mentioned it before, I forgot or missed it. That must have been exciting and interesting!

We are supposed to get 4-7 inches of snow tomorrow. I'm not looking forward to it, but I shouldn't complain. We've had a very nice and unseasonably warm November up to now. We don't have any plans, just working on projects around the condo.

Have a great weekend!

Judy

Shadow decided to bring my barbell pad upstairs from the basement. She looked so cute carrying it. I'm glad I saw her and had my phone nearby. She is a character!

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, I decided to clean the grout in our kitchen tile floor....some water leaked though the baseboard of the breakfast nook and dripped on to the box that has the security system wiring....and shorted the system...not fun. It kept chirping through the speakers, a siren yelp every once in a while. Thank goodness my cousin is the guy that installed it, he came over and fixed it. Now I have a half done grout cleaning project to work on...I did do a lot of filing in between so I guess it wasn't a total waste of time.

Lynda, I should have thought of the professors that do not stay long and that there would be housing for them...funny, the 2 past owners of our house before we bought it were professors, they each kept the house for only 4 years then moved on to other universities. Enjoy the movie if you decide to go.

Lori, glad your back & Chester are doing better. That workout you did looked tough...I watched the clip. I think I am going to look at the Tri-sets workout as well as the weights in 4DS...(thanks Judy!), I remember going to AAA before a trip and getting one of those spiral bound notebooks they called "Trip-Tics" before any driving trip....ahh...the memories of things before high tech stuff became the norm. I liked Autumn in the 21 Day Fix workouts too....I can also try those again....so many workouts to choose from! Including John and me it will be 20 for dinner...extra for appetizers, 2 families that go to other dinners come to our house for appetizers...funny...but they want to see us and this is the way it works out for them to do so. Good luck with your de-clutter mission!

Valerie, thanks for the pic of the flame weeder....I was looking at a smaller set up....maybe one that you can strap the small tank on your back or shoulder? I never use the broiler in the last stove we had for over 20 years and will probably never use this one either. I either broil outside on the grill or not at all.

Judy, Shadow is so cute...:) great job on the workouts! I have a big box of papers that I need to shred...no service like what you have in this city...:(. John has a shredded that we bring back and forth from home to his office. We are supposed to have a high of 48 degrees today, but if you are getting snow...we will get it right after you....Michigan weather is what we get 1-2 days later.

Hi to Josie,

Class this morning, and making the dog's food between today and tomorrow...lots of HouseMax....

Take care,

Judy those pics are adorable. what a determined little kitty! I tried padded shorts before but with all the standing up/ down, I'd get the top rear of the chamois caught on the tip of the bike seat. again and again. I maybe should move the seat backwards and try it again. for me indoor biking is mostly posture fatigue, and my sit bones get sore. mt biking outdoors I move around enough so it's not much of an issue. how long I last depends on how hard the riding is. we pick things where we can get some up, some down, some coasting. we are not cranking straight uphill for 2 hours. I sometimes have the chamois-getting-caught issue on the mt bike too.
we did a hike today on a trail that's open to mt biking . it was about 6 miles RT and the lower part would be a nice bike loop, while one section was a bit steep for riding. we'd be pushing uphill, and walking down parts. a new spot for us. a lot of roads and trails that link to them, so we will be trying more soon. in forest, and fairly dry considering so not a lot of flying mud. so surprising because it's not that far from where we rode and no debris at all.
Lori it was more than just leaves..... lots of branches, chunks of bark, tree limbs, big pieces of wood, whole trees. piles of leaves can hide chunky stuff underneath. should all be cleaned off by now.

Oh Deb, cleaning floor grout sounds like great fun! good thing you got it fixed right off. I've never seen one of the small Dragons in person. I know a 5 gall tank is too heavy to lug around. I can't imagine 20+ for dinner. Never had the experience as a guest or as a host. no idea how to do it. DH and I each have a small shredder in our offices, and we shred as we go. He's fussy about everything with our name and address on, old bills, etc. so we don't let it pile up. and any old medical or dental records... they are covered with SSN's. mine shreds credit cards too.

Good evening ladies!

This morning I did Live Strong Total Body. This may be my favorite total body workout. 46 minutes and you are done. I followed it up with SB Advanced Barre with SBF Ball. Wow is all I can say about this SBF workout. Talk about feeling the burn!

Valerie..thanks for the picture. Now I get it! Sounds like a nice hike today. I really need to get going on our shredding. I have a bin full of it.

Judy...oh what cute pictures! Boy she was so determined to bring it upstairs! Good that you do enjoy the body beast workouts. How much snow did you end up with?

Deb...cleaning grout can be tough. This morning my home improvement project was fixing the toilet! Needed a new Fill Valve. Told my DH he was a lucky man that he married me! Lol! 20 people is a lot! You must have everything down to a science!
