Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 11/1

Good morning,

Indian Summer is so nice, I wish it would stay for a few months. It's better then the actual summer we had. :).

Lynda, I always buy the complete new series when Cathe first does the presale, it's the best price....then sell the high impact (or in my case the high impact and step workouts) on Ebay. For RWHIIT I sold the Plyo one, the step and the kickboxing. Not sure about the ICE series, since all the DVD's have a core add on, and a single muscle weight part..that makes them tempting to keep. I remember you telling us about your sisters, so sad that they died so young.

Valerie, I am one that reads reviews as well....like our new stove...I read so many different stove reviews it was getting confusing. I am doing the same right now for a microwave. I too wish I could get John to do more...he does walk a lot of miles on streams when he goes fishing, but that is not often enough to count as exercise. He leaves this morning for a 4 day fishing trip in Pennsylvania. He should get some good walking in during that. I think the ICE series is going to be one of Cathe's best. The premixes alone are worth the price of the series....I was not too interested in the "To the Mat" one...mat leg work is not my favorite until I saw this premix: "All Bands: You will only do Band exercises"

Lori, that is great that you do have memories of your Dad...I think I can remember back to when I was 5, but not any earlier. I remember asking my Dad to teach me how to read, so I could read books myself, and not have to wait for him to read to me each night. It was a thing he did every night after dinner, but sometimes he took a while to get to it and I was very impatient apparently. :). Those are great memorials to visit..will you have a car? I don't believe there is a Metro stop near the Jeffferson memorial..it's a pretty far walk to it from the closest Metro...John and I were so proud that we did not take an cabs this last trip, did everything using the Metro, even to and from the airport.

Hi to Josie & Judy,

Take care,

Deb, always read reviews. I shop via internet for clothes, info on fit is surprisingly useful. for appliances, I check Consumer reports, then Lowes / Home Depot. I thought I needed a new washing machine last year...expected mine to drop dead any day. Reading reviews completely changed the brand I was looking at, and the store I'd buy from. Sometimes CR has not yet reviewed current models yet when you need one, often data is more than a year old. Users point out problems / benefits that you may not have thought of, since technology changes what's available so quickly. My machine settled down and is still running so now I have to redo the search when it dies.

Where did you find the info about the Ice series and a band only workout? I looked but didn't see that. I always think I might use something like that when traveling but I haven't bought one yet.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did AT (56:00).

I'm with you Deb--just keep the warm weather coming. That sounds like a great strategy if you have an ebay account. I don't, but I have sold some dvds on Amazon. I think I will try all of the ICE workouts and if there are any that are impossible for me, I will sell. I have high hopes, though, for this series. I started reading pretty early--4 yrs. old--by harassing people. Someone bought me a book based on the Disney version of Peter Pan (I was utterly enchanted with the animated version) and I would struggle along, then run to someone to ask "what is this word?" and soldier on to the next word I couldn't sound out. I also had the Heidi books, and was never content with someone reading them to me, so I did the same thing with them. My mom was a hotel owner and I bothered a lot of the guests I think, in addition to my mom and sisters.

Lori, the Viet Nam memorial by Maya Lin is very moving. Loved the Lincoln Memorial too. I think the Holocaust Museum is so incredible, but also harrowing to spend time in. Then there's the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian, the Washington Monument............... So much to see in D.C. I know the National Portrait Gallery is planning a major Sylvia Plath exhibition in 2017, probably in honor of what would have been her 85th birthday. Plath has quite a bit of art that will be on display. Thanks for the kind words about my sisters. I miss all three of them.

Valerie, I always feel sad for you when you describe your family growing up. Your dad sounds like a classic case of passive-aggressive. Usually it's the woman/wife who does the silent treatment. Maybe your mom was just as happy she didn't have to listen to him.

Uh-oh--someone else is messaging at the same time, so I will sign out.

Deb, thanks, I'll go take a look.
ETA, thank you, I did and read some other posts. I DID order the whole series on preorder, just getting excited about it.

Question....Do you all print out worksheets on paper to record weights you use? I've always looked for someone to post a worksheet compendium on the forums but after the last software update... I can't find x-trainsheet. and older workouts would be even harder to find.

Am I overlooking something here? I need it on paper. I like to reprint occasionally as weight gets written in, erased, re-written etc and the paper gets shredded. Is there a better way to do this?

Good evening ladies!

This morning I did Live Hiit Fit Circuit and at lunch the ladies were all busy so I did the Kickboxing only from Live Kickboxing and Barre. I have 1lb gloves I keep at the office so was able to use these. I am afraid I will not be working out this weekend. Leaving the house tomorrow at 5am. Saturday with all the walking thinking this will be considered my workout.

Deb...I only started buying complete sets since Xtrain. When she would do only two or three at a time I would buy them all but never when she had a series. If you remember I never really lifted weights until p90x which I did right before Xtrain came out. So her weight workouts did not interest me. Although somehow I did end up with a few of them but never did them. Now I love weights! I think I will love the all band premix too! The plan is to take taxis everywhere. Never thought about taking the metro. I'll ask my DH about it tonight since he was living in DC when we met.

Valerie...yes I also feel so sad for you when you speak of your childhood. If I am doing a rotation I will record my weights. I think Deb has some Xtrain spread sheets?

Lynda...another beautiful day!!!! There is so much to see in DC! After this trip my DH and I are talking abput going back for a weekend. He lived there for 20 years and has not been back since he moved to New England.

Not sure when I will be checking in. Might not be until I get back. The service is tomorrow at 2pm.

Hi to Josie and Judy!

Valerie,

I emailed you an excel spreadsheet with the XTrain workout sheets....let me know if you can open it etc, otherwise I can scan and send you them separately as PDF documents.

Deb

thank you Deb and Lori.... I will try printing after this ... my printer sometimes won't cooperate. I don't have Excel and I think it might not print. I have Word, not Office or excel. My husbands printer is newer so I will try his if mine doesn't work. He has different software than I do.

Today, I did Burn sets bi's and tri's and core 1. this is one of the sheets where the paper is worn thru. workouts I do multiple times ... I erase and enter and it doesn't take long before I can't read or write on it anymore. after the shoulder issue, I didn't know if I'd ever be doing these again.... I'm so happy I am!
don't know where the file is.... maybe I printed one set and thought that was good forever. ( Idiot!) some of the other x-train sheets are pristine because I didn't do them often.... I can never tell right off what will work and what won't. there are some workouts that I stick with one weight but others where I try to increase in increments. so one copy is fine for some but not all.

ETA Burn sets bi's and tris printed fine, beautifully. I can't get x-train sh, ba, sh to print. it goes onto a second page in both portrait or landscape configuration. it won't print the second half. so will try DH's system tomorrow. Thank you again.

I want to say something else and this applies to all of you...... I am very bad at expressing empathy..... when you speak of difficult times and personal losses. I feel for you, but I just can't do the words properly. I get uncomfortable and delete what I've written. I've always had troubles with this and am better than I used to be ....but still not adequate. I tend to not respond and change the topic. I know I do it. I apologize and will try to do better or just shut up.

Happy Friday!

I think today may be the last of our Indian Summer...it's supposed to be cold and rainy tomorrow...oh well, it was great while it lasted.

Lynda, we sound like we were the same little 4 year old readers..:). I don't actually remember starting to read..but I do remember always having books and going to the library all the time...kind of like today....:). I didn't realize your Mom owned a hotel...that had to be interesting...how large was it?

Valerie, no apology necessary. We are all different, and express feelings in our own ways. It is difficult sometimes to do this in writing, especially in a forum board.

I don't think you can print anything from Excel without having the program. You should be able to print PDF documents though; I can send you the sheets in that format. If there are workouts from the series that you don't have or do, let me know and I will skip those.

Lori, Have a safe trip....if you can.. look into the Metro...I think there is a $9 all day pass, which is so convenient...they have stops everywhere.... except near the Jefferson monument unfortunately, so you may have to take a taxi to that one. I don't have much to compare it with, but know that it is one of the best systems there is, at least according to others that have used them in other big cities.

Hi Judy & Josie,

Any plans for the weekend?

Take care,

Hi ladies,

No workout today, I will be cleaning and getting ready for the party. I did a double workout yesterday, I did bodypump and Karina's workout. My friend Claudia needs to add weight training to her workouts and I told her that I would do bodypump with her on Thursday mornings. She is my running partner and wont do it without me. I am very sore today :). The results of the colonoscopy came out fine, but my DH will need to have another one next year.

Lori, have a safe trip.

Valerie, no need to apologize. Like Deb said we are all different.

Garance, it never gets easy when we loose a loved one. I still miss my DB every day.

Hi to Judy and Deb!

Josie

Deb, DH's new multifunction won't print it at all! Mine is an old HP but this morning I tweaked things around and got it to print! (I just edited out my request for a PDF file) I saved it, so am good for now. thank you for sending. I would have saved it before if I could, but it was not in the documents. I changed the orientation to landscape and then it worked.

I've been able to help my sister out a bit lately. Her life is a mess. she has many many health problems, and a seizure disorder that can't be completely controlled. so she can't drive anymore! she has to scrounge a ride from someone or walk. she reads a lot and I help her get books from amazon. she has no computer or any computer skills. I can't imagine her life. I let her pay for the books sometimes (not always), and send her recipes she wants from the food Network. she never goes anywhere and is totally broke all the time.

Josie, my DH just scheduled his annual colonoscopy for December. If this one is "clean" he will go to less frequently. with his family history, he will be doing these regularly no matter what.
Lori Have a great trip! all the walking will replace workouts and it's good to take a rest day or change things up anyway.

I always was a reader and that was one thing my family did right. encouraged it. I'm not sure when I started actually reading because I knew the books by heart, so the line between actually reading or just reciting blurred.
I can't imagine my mother doing anything to support herself... like owning a business, let alone running one. That is such a reach!! she was not a good example of self sufficiency.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did KCM's Cardio Quick Fix (44:39).

Deb, my dad had to retire from his job as a foreman of a crew that travelled around fixing or establishing power lines (Otter Tail Power Company) because he had a stroke that disabled him. He decided to buy a hotel that he knew various crews would use travelling (it was also next to a train station), but when he died, my mom had to take over, and she was not a great financial manager, so she eventually lost the hotel and we moved to Minneapolis. Not a happy story or ending. She worked as a waitress for the rest of her life until she retired, but she had survivor benefits both for herself and two daughters that really helped. I was the first one in my family to go to college.

Valerie, I agree with Deb--no need to apologize. It sounds like you are being a good sister and doing what you can to help. I hope her dog is giving her some companionship and love.

Josie, hope your party is a blast and your dad has fun and a few surprises.

Lori, enjoy your trip. Deb is right about the metro system. It's really good--except during rush hour.

Hi to Judy, who must be done at last with STS. Hurrah!

I just finished Cardio supersets. I had not done that one because of the pushups and mt climbers but did fairly well considering how long it's been. had to pause a few times top catch my breath and get reminded of what the next move was.

Yes, Judy check in so we can congratulate you on finishing STS. Be proud, STS is quite a commitment.

Thank you all for your understanding. I try to do better... but it feels awkward so I say nothing.

My sister drives everyone crazy. I can control access because she can only reach me by phone so I can step away if I can't listen anymore. She had her dog spayed today at a new low cost clinic. it's so weird to have to look up stuff online for her.... in her own city.... because the phone book is not up to date, and she has no other way to check! she lives in WI while I live in WA. She had her dog fully immunized while my brother ..who is not poor like she is....was too cheap to do it. His dog got heartworms and had to be treated for it recently. I didn't realize it was a mosquito transmitted disease. as far as I know, heartworm is not an issue here.

Hi Everyone,

Yes, I did finish STS today! I did disc 36, shoulders, biceps and triceps this morning and that was the last one. I am very happy to be done. Mesocycle 3 ended up being my favorite. I will probably do it again, but without Mesocycle 1.

I was always a big reader too. I remember bringing home loads of books from the school library on Fridays and before holidays. I read constantly. My favorite thing to do on Saturday when I was in high school was to go to the bookstore at the mall and pick up a book.

Deb-it was cold and rainy here today, I think our Indian Summer is over :( It was sure nice while it lasted.

Lynda- I have high hopes for ICE too. I think this is going to be a great series.

Valerie-no need to apologize, like the others said, we are all different and it can be hard to know what to say, especially on a forum.
DH is going to be getting another colonoscopy soon too. He goes to the doctor next week and they will probably schedule it for December or maybe early next year. He is on the 5 year schedule and had his last one in 2011.

Josie-I'm glad your DH's colonoscopy came out good.

Lori-have a safe and good trip! All of that walking will definitely replace your workouts. I haven't been in DC in almost 20 years. I really enjoyed the time I spent there.

Judy

Good morning,

I almost started a new thread today, thinking it was Sunday. I have been off one day since Thursday...not sure what that's all about.

Josie, glad your DH's results were good....a double workout had to be tiring...but I think cleaning for a party is worse LOL.

Valerie, if you are sure they are going to print...no problem here sending you the sheets in PDF format...good that you can do things for your sister...where does she live again? She sounds like she really cares about the dog, and that is a good thing to have her be able to focus on.

Lynda, where were you living when your Mom& Dad had the hotel? Putting up a hotel where you know there is a steady business of work crews was a great idea your Dad had.

Judy, great job on finishing STS! :). Ok, so I know we have beat this one to death here....but did you FF though the rests between exercises in meso 3? LOL...What's up next while we wait for ICE?

Hi Lori,

Not much going on here....agility class with Keegan this morning, and HouseMax....

Take care,

Deb, it printed nicely. I know I had issues before but switching the orientation to landscape worked well. otherwise it was cutting off the bottom half and would not go to a second page. My printer is at least 15 years old ..unheard of! .... but it works better than newer ones sometimes. it was expensive when we bought it... an HP.

sister lives in Milwaukee. She takes good care of her pets even thought she has no money. She really does love her animals. people get burned out on her, but the animals ....she can get along with them. I order books for her. I let her pay sometimes I guess to keep her "under control". she usually wants hardcover books because print size is bigger than paperbacks, shipping is 3.99 a book.
Raining this morning so we aren't doing the gardening chores we'd planned. some kind of workout later today.

ETA Judy congrats on finishing STS. I think I took some time off after finishing, think we went on vacation and I timed it to coincide. I would think as long as it's "different" that's all that matters.

Deb-I did FF through a few of the rest periods. I also did some core work and stretching during the longer rest periods. I'm going to do RWH along with Spinervals for the next few weeks. I printed out the RWH workout cards today so I'll be ready to start. I don't want to lose the momentum I had going with STS so I think I will just jump right in rather than take an active rest week. I don't really feel like I need a rest week.
I'm not sure when to expect ICE, but I'm thinking after Thanksgiving.
