Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 10/4

well, change in plans. Puss seems to be feeling OK but is peeing in small quantities again so will go get a recheck on him today meaning we probably won't do this trip as planned.
Deb so sorry... are you possibly letting yourself get somewhat dehydrated with all the traveling? easy to do because water and bathrooms are less available and not convenient. Cranberry juice is supposed to be a help in preventing bacteria from attaching to the inside of the bladder and maybe you can incorporate some daily as a preventive measure? I'm thinking there are other approaches but lots of fluids should help.... as a kid I was very prone to UTI's so I know how unpleasant they can be. Hope you get on the right antibiotic ASAP. seems last time you were on a series of different ones.

I've never liked deadlifts. I never felt like I felt the work in the right spot, so I've never pushed the weight....wondered if my form was wrong? I'm pretty short too, 5'2" and very flexible in forward fold positions . anyway, not a movement I felt benefitted me so I did them with a medium non stressful weight and moved on to the next exercise.

Florida has never been a good location for me. I was there once when it was lovely ( Clearwater) but every other time was humid, hot, and rainy. I used to curse having to attend sales meetings there. Hope you have a good vacation there Lori... all the people who live there can't be wrong!

ETA I'm looking for worksheets that I know were posted because I printed several. I don't remember what forum. I was thinking either "Newest workouts" or "Open discussion" but not finding them.. Does anyone remember where or what it was called? I've searched for worksheets and Flex Train but not finding anything. I was looking for the Flex Train one specifically as I've done the workout a lot but never printed a worksheet. TIA.

Good evening ladies!

This morning was ruthless core and flex and tonight was Cathe's live kickbox and barre. Love this one!

Deb...oh no! I hope you can get to the doctors today and start to feel better. Boy this was certainly a rough trip for you. I do have the Body Beast workouts but never have done them. They are actually my brothers but he had them for ever and never did them so I borrowed to try them out but like him I have yet to do them! I looked up the books on the Liam Neeson movie and it is actually Book 10? Wonder why they decided to start there?

Judy...hope your back is better soon. Every now and then I feel it in my lower back and need to stop. I always wondered if it was my form. Now that I have mirrors it will be nice to see my form.

Lynda...since I have been with my husband there have been a few tough hurricanes that had passed thru that area and one did some serious damage. That is what scares me about living there. DH really wants to be closer to his parents as they are getting up there in age. I certainly understand this. Oh the foliage in New England is really beautiful isn't it?

Valerie...oh poor Puss. You are a good pet owner. Hoping kitty is ok. So sorry the trip is cancelled. Sounds like you were really looking forward to it.

Josie...thinking about you.

Hi Everyone,

Valerie-I'm sorry about Puss, I hope he will be ok. I agree with Lori, you are a good pet owner.
I always seem to do better with squats and lunges than with deadlifts.

Lynda-80 lbs is really good for deadlifts! I usually do 35 at home but was doing 50 at the gym. The weight didn't seem too heavy at the time but I could tell when I was done that I had pulled something. I'm 5'4, so not too tall either.

Lori-Nice workouts! I can't wait to get back to lifting. My back is feeling better now. I might try a short workout tomorrow and just keep the weight really light.

Deb-hope you are feeling better soon.

Hi to Josie,

Judy

Good morning,

I'm back home and the meds are working. What a fiasco, going back and forth to a CVS that was about a mile from the hotel. I went there early to get the over the counter UTI relief stuff, took the cab with my colleagues that were on their way to the meeting, had their cab drop me off, then I walked back to the hotel. Later had to cab back there on my way to the airport to pick up the prescription.

Lynda, I hope that if there are impact moves even in between the weight work, that it is something that can be modified. Maybe Cathe will some day consider a modifier...(here we go again!)...

Judy, supposedly, as long as you keep your shoulders pulled back, and hold in your core, the move should be safe. Yeah, that's me that looked up how to do them correctly after I ruptured a disk.

Valerie, hope Puss is ok, too bad about the trip, but understand completely. I would do the same. Nice thing about those trips, it's not like you have plane reservations etc. Yes, you are probably correct, I was not drinking enough. I tend to do that when I travel, and airplanes do dehydrate you too. The worksheet thread was recently posted, I think it was in the Open forum. I will try to remember what the title was..

Edited to add: they seem to have forgotten to put in a "search" function...I used to use it a lot when looking for an old thread...which worksheet are you looking for? I have a lot of them and can e-mail to you.

Lori, I would be concerned living where there are hurricanes too! Snow melts, with minimal damage. I understand why your DH would want to go there though. I know, why wouldn't they do the first book as a movie, ( it was a really good one to read!), then people could start the series reading etc.

Josie, hope things are going better with your DB.

Take care,

I think Puss is better but haven't checked the litter pan for pee balls. Deb, you and Puss both need to drink more! I know I used to get "dry" when traveling just because it was not always convenient to get both water and a bathroom. and with air travel these days... well the last flights I took had one tiny bathroom for the whole (Southwest) plane. there was a line the whole time we were in the air. that bathroom was so small I'm surprised some of the bigger people fit into it at all. I'm pretty small and flexible comparatively speaking and I felt seriously cramped.

I am not finding any old threads. there's a magnifying glass at the top right of the page and you get a search box by clicking on it but I'm only finding my own thread where I'm asking about flex train. I know someone had done a beautiful set of workout pages using a spread sheet format a while ago that printed out nicely ...must have been a BIG project... but I do NOT remember who.

Did flex train yesterday ...worksheet isn't really that necessary. I just use the weight cathe does, but it did make me wonder if any of the older forum stuff is still available since this update. off to yoga.

Hi Ladies,

My brother is doing well, he gets a little confused on the milligrams that he is suppose to take on the new meds, but other than that he is ok. He had many seizures during the week that he was in the hospital which leave him weak and a bit confused. I will be taking him home with me tomorrow just to monitor him one more week. Other than that we are having a good time shopping, cooking and catching up.

Judy, Deb is right about the dead lift. Keep you chest out and your shoulders back and abs contracted in order not to hurt your back. That is how we do them in body pump. I only use 45 pounds for dead lifts.

Valerie, you are a good mom to Puss :)

Deb, I hope that you caught the UTI on time and not suffer as much as the last time.

Lori, have a great vacation. I would be so afraid to live in a place where they have hurricanes.

Garance, the seizures are due to complications caused by HIV/AIDS. He is undetectable now due to the great meds out there, but the lesions on his brain appeared the last time we almost lost him. That was 13 years ago. I'm just happy to still have him in my life :)

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did AT (56:00).

Deb, I hope you have the right meds this time and they kick in quickly and effectively. It's terrible to be away from home if you are sick or have an accident (like I did that one year in Oxford). Yep, that's the proper form for deadlifts. My younger son gave me those instructions and I follow them religiously. I ordered the low-impact hiit, and all three weight workouts. I think the only one that has impact is the one for legs. She calls it "contrast" training, but to illustrate, she showed a video from the STS plyometric legs. Sheesh--if she had just said plyo legs, I wouldn't have bought it. I'll see if I can modify, or if there is a premix with just the weight portions. If not, it will be up for sale lickety-split.

Josie, it's so wonderful the way AIDS has gone from turning its victims into social outcasts into a story about recovery and salvaged lives. I can understand why the AIDS/Lifecycle ride is so important for you.

Valerie, too bad about the trip, but Puss comes first.

Lori, our mountain is just a blaze of colors right now. I am also enjoying the "blood moon" in the morning. Fall is a great season in New England.

Judy, the heaviest I have gone lately on deadlifts is in Supercuts, where Cathe uses two 20 lb. dumbbells.

Valerie, I found someone on the Open forum that has the link to the spreadsheets ...she would e-mail them to you but needs your e-mail address. I have it but did not want to give it to her without you approving.

Good evening ladies!

I was going to do Flextrain tonight (valerie got me thinking about this one) but decided to have a rest day. I did two days of legs back to back (plyo legs then barre) so my legs are tired and my body says rest. So I am having a glass of wine to really relax.

Deb...yes what a fiasco! Glad you have started with meds and hoping all is getting better for you.

Lynda...I agree with Deb that you should be able to modify the weight workouts if there are plyo moves inbetween. I find that even if there is no modifier I can always find a way to modify a move if I need to and still keep the same beat. I will admit these workouts do look tough and I am really looking forward to them. I hope the chaptering is better than the last round. I loved them all but with x10 I wish I could do just the cardio and not the weights or vice versa. I live near Mt. Watchusett and boy it's beautiful too.

Josie...your brother is so fortunate to have a sister like you. Glad he is doing well.

Valerie...I mean no disrespect but I often wondererd the same thing about larger people. Those bathrooms are so small!!!! Like you I am 5'2" and have to maneuver just right. My DH is 6'1 he is always uncomfortable on planes never mind the bathrooms!

Judy...I usually will use 50 when I do deadlifts. I prefer 2 25lb dumbells over a barbell. I'll be doing them tomorrow so I can't wait to check the form. Thanks for the pointers Deb!

Have a great night all!

Deb, there was a comment from the administrator that those links just aren't open yet. I'm OK with waiting until they are ready. I want to reprint several workout sheets using a better printer. some of my older sheets are getting pretty scruffy. I've had problems getting them to print from email, mostly the size issue again and also getting some weird formatting. .
DH's printer works better than mine to size pages. my printer is older and tends to make things microscopic or gigantic with no in between. thank you for looking for me though ... I saw your thread on Open discussion . I was clicking on the "magnifying glass" and searching and found my own posts only. Hope your UTI is settling down quickly.

went to yoga this morning and did a half hour on the treadmill tonight. I got sore from Flex Training, that blasted band work.
Lori the bathroom on the SW jet was incredibly tiny. I seriously do NOT know how some bigger people maneuver it. Maybe they just don't use airplane bathrooms? I hate to even bring my purse in there with me, and how do mothers with little kids manage it? I KNOW they didn't used to be this small. never "roomy" but weren't there all kinds of stories about people having sex in bathrooms? How the heck ??? Hard enough just to pee....

Lynda, that is so true about aids victims... have gone from denigrated social pariahs to being seen as unfortunate victims of an illness as they should be.

Good morning,

Today I did a Walk Fit treadmill workout.

Valerie, did you take Puss back to the vet? I can sympathize with him right now! I found the magnifying glass and could not find any old threads either. LOL on your comment about having sex in those bathrooms today...:). I also have some excel spreadsheets that have a bunch of Cathe worksheets if you want a particular one let me know. If you have excel loaded on your pc it should open and print easily.

Josie, glad your brother is doing better. Lucky you are retired and can take him home to recuperate.

Lynda, I'm pretty sure you will be able to modify any of the moves in the workouts you purchased. I plan on doing the same thing.

Lori, Good that you are listening to your body and taking a rest day..agree with both you and Valerie, those airplane bathrooms are a joke! But hey, when you need them you are grateful that they are there.

Work, then agility class for me today,

Take care,

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning I did KCM's Cardio Quick Fix, both workouts (44:39).

If I have to do too many modifications on a workout, I just don't feel like the workout was made for me and it's better to sell it. I knew instantly that Tabatacize was not for me and sold it quickly. Same with To the Max and the other one that came out the same time. I eventually sold the two yoga workouts from LIS as well and Butts and Guts. I have managed to modify the leg workout in the XTrain series, so maybe I can do the same on this one.

Today is our anniversary, so we are going out to dinner. Other than that, no plans for the weekend. Maybe a big walk to enjoy the peak foliage.

Sex in an airplane bathroom sounds ugly, doesn't it? Unsanitary and cramped and smelly. I heard that some idiot on a flight to the Dominican Republic sneezed and announced that he had ebola, scaring everyone and leading to a massive arrival of people in hazmat suits when they landed. He said it was just a joke. I hope he gets charged with something.

Hope everyone is feeling better--Deb, Judy, Puss, and Josie's bro--quite a group!

I took Puss back to the vet the other day and they did an xray to make sure he didn't have stones in his bladder. all clear. so I got some special food and some other meds to help settle it down. the antibiotic was injected ....supposedly works for 10-14 days. he's acting normal again, though his pee balls are a little smaller than before. I think he probably had some discomfort and it's getting better now, and drinking more. the food is special for kitties with kidney/bladder issues and expensive, but he likes it and polished off the whole bowl full today, leaving behind the little bit of his regular food I mixed it with. Kitties can be so picky about what they get used to eating, but he likes the new expensive stuff ... figures. .

Deb, I do not have Excel ...maybe that's why I have issues. I do not have Microsoft office just Word, and have a shortened version of Outlook. Fine for my needs mostly, but sometimes there are issues.

we went on a lovely hike. last nice day before the weather poops out with the first series of fall rain storms. it was warm and sunny. DH did the hike yesterday and saw a beautiful black bear up close, a flock of ptarmigans in winter plumage, and heard elk bugling. so we decided to go back to the same spot today. Not quite as good...saw a mountain goat, finally spotted the same black bear but not as close, but never found the ptarmigans though we looked high and low. heard an elk bugle and saw a grouse. so not bad! tomorrow is opening day of general deer season so no tme to be anywhere near the mountains, rain or not.

I never knew if the stories about sex in an airplane bathroom were a joke or serious... maybe plane bathrooms were configured differently back then? seems they called it the "5 mile high club" or something similar? It just seems impossible for 2 people to be in there at one time let alone do anything! I do NOT know how mothers take small children in there and accomplish anything.

Happy Anniversary Lynda. How many years?

Hope they bill the ebola scare guy with how much the emergency response cost.

Good evening ladies!

Today was Flextrain with the firewalker workout from LLA mixed in. I made this on workout blender and it comes to about 70 minutes. Good workout.

Valerie...glad Puss seems to be on the mend and has a good appetite for the expensive stuff. lol! My little Nilla is very fussy and she gets fresh meat and veggies. I can't believe I do this for her. She is 14 so I feel she has earned this. Chester and our 2 kitties eat anything! Not fussy at all! I have no idea what a grouse is. Need to look this one up.

Lynda...Happy Aniversary! Hope you have a nice dinner. I heard the ebola guy on the news too. What an ass! Yes he should be charged and fined! Butts and Gutts used to be my go to workout. Funny how things just change. I may have to pull this one out after vacation.

Deb...good for you working out after what you have been thru the past couple of days. How are you feeling?

Been giving some thoughts as to my workouts while I am away. I will bring the old standby Travel Fit as I feel like it really works the upper body well and then I think I am going to do Suzanne Bowen's streaming all week for lower body. I think this will be a good plan. Perhaps I will get my MIL to do some Barre with me. :)

Josie...hope things are still going well for yor brother.

Judy...how is your back? Hoping the strain is history.

Have a great night all.

Hi Everyone,
I did a Spinerval workout this morning. My back is better so I am ready to start back with weight workouts. Hopefully I can avoid injuring it again. I will work on my deadlift form, probably starting with a lower weight too.

Valerie-Glad to hear that Puss is better.

Lynda-Happy Anniversary! I agree on modifying workouts. If I have to modify a significant portion of it then I probably won't do it much.

Lori-I have Suzanne Bowen's streaming set up on the MacBook now. I think I am going to like her workouts based on what I have seen so far. Your workout plan for while you are away sounds perfect! Hope you have a great trip!

Josie- I hope you and your brother are doing ok.

Deb-Great job on the treadmill workout! Hope you are feeling better.

Judy

Good morning all,

Happy Weekend. It's beautiful here, the sun is shining although only about 47 degrees. I'll take it. :)

Lynda, Happy Anniversary! How many years? Our 30th is Tuesday, and of course I will be in DC. I am always in DC for our anniversary. It's the same week that we have an association fall meeting each year. John and I will celebrate next Saturday with a nice dinner as well. How was your dinner? Yes, I can't even imagine anyone wanting to have sex in an airplane bathroom...I can hardly stand being in there to do what I have to do...yuk! I too, sold Tabatasize, and To the Max and whatever that other one was called. I also sold all the newer kickboxing ones, and step ones. Does The Good Wife actually start at 9:30? it says 9:00 pm on the CBS site, but our TV Topics news thing said 9:30 last week. I don't know if I can stay up at the hotel to watch it. I can always catch it on my PC when I get home.

Valerie, good news on no kidney/bladder stones for Puss. Yes, I have had Keegan on the dog version of that food...did you get the dry or canned? Keegan would not touch the canned, even though the vet said it was better because of the moisture content. Yes. it's called "The Mile High Club"....I only know this from reading about it somewhere in books...no one I know has ever belonged, at least not that they have admitted..LOL

Lori, feeling better thanks. I will keep the meds with me for this upcoming trip, just in case. When do you leave for Florida? I agree with taking Travel Fit....will be taking it with me too!

Judy, glad your back is better. Close call.

Hi to Josie,

Agility class later this morning, then HOuseMax and getting clothes ready to pack..leaving tomorrow on the 5:30 PM flight. I should have taken an earlier one...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spruce_grouse Lori, that's a grouse. there are many different kinds. they are fun to watch in spring when they display their colors and strut around. we see them often. ptarmigans are grouse like birds that live higher up in the mountains. they turn white in winter to match the snow. they are transitioning from brown is to white right now. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...itg=1&ved=0CJUBEMo3&ei=e2A5VMv-I9CsogSU8ILADg

Deb, I think the food did more than anything... normal pee ball last night. and he seems to feel better..hard to tell with a kitty sometimes. he absolutely loved the new food..... he's never eaten soft food tho I tried again not too long ago. same idea, the moisture keeps them from getting too "dry". he doesn't eat that much so the food cost won't amount to much over time.
we are finishing season 5 of TGW. DH was totally surprised at the events. I tried not to learn but found a few things out beforehand accidentally. some segments seem awfully frantic, almost like they're trying to cram in too much but still enjoying it.

Good afternoon ladies!

Busy day today getting ready for our trip. Our flight tomorrow is at 6am. Ugh! DS is bringing us to the airport which will make it easier. This morning I did Cathe's Live All About Legs. It's just over an hour long and has everything and it flies by.

House max and packing that is my day today. Rainy here so glad I got all my errands done yesterday. Going to try to take Chester for a walk later. He'll like that.

Deb...glad you are feeling better. Happy Anniversary to you too!

Judy...glad your back is better too. Enjoy SB. I find her workouts are a refreshing change from heavy weights and plyo moves but still feel they get the job done!

Have a great weekend all. Hi to Lynda, Josie and Valerie!

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, Lori, and Judy--

This morning was Housemax.

This was our 34th anniversary, but we were together two years before that. I didn't want to get married and pregnant until I finished my first book. The meal was yummy. I had the bistro steak with spicy corn salad, and DH had the Bolognese. But they also brought us a chicken liver pate that was so creamy and good on brioche, some wild mushrooms in a ragout, and coffee ice cream and hazelnut torte, none of which we ordered, but because DH is one of their "farm to table" suppliers, they always give us extra things. I brought half of my steak home. I had two kir royale's with my dinner instead of a Manhattan.

You sound like you are feeling better, Deb. Now, you see? If you were retired, you wouldn't have to be in DC on your anniversary. I think the reason why TGW comes on later is that football often spills over into the primetime listings, so everything is delayed.

My green band must not be very good, because I hardly feel anything when I do the stuff from Flextrain for the back. Maybe I need a new one? Valerie, I actually saw a little video from the plane where that ass announced he had ebola. The flight attendant announced that no one should be too worried because in her opinion the guy is an"idiot." Puss is now enjoying some fancier food. We have grouse around here too and see them when we go snowshoeing. Max has flushed them many times.

Lori, enjoy your trip tomorrow! And I hope the weather is good for you too.

Hi to Judy and Josie!

Judy just wanted to throw in that the disk has almost arrived... it's at the PO so I'll get it mon or tues. thank you!!! not sure if PO is open on Columbus day, although here seattle has renamed CD 'Indigenous Peoples Day"..... spare me from this ridiculous posturing by the city council. they seem to lie awake nights thinking up goofy things to waste time and energy on.

whatever.. we recently put a gate on our driveway and it was closed but not locked when the PO person went by and she didn't drive it down. I thought it would be small enough to go in our mail box, but I guess not. so thank you.
