Pentagenarians & Beyond: W?B 10/3

http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=36056

this is a link to the cascade pass trail, where we went yesterday. the topo map shows the trail and location and the little pics blow up to show the area. there is less snow now, and the green areas are mostly orange, yellow, and red now with fall colors. It's a huge open area surrounded by peaks so you just can't get it all into one pic. It's in the north cascade NP so there are many many images floating around out there.

Deb, I'll look for a bike picture but will need to post it in another window.

Deb, this is a link to Trek bikes. they're a big company! http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/road/ My bike looks kind of like the blue one pictured. it has dropped bars and is white. Trek makes some very ($$$$) expensive bikes and some inexpensive but much better than 25 yrs ago. both DH & I got bikes in the $600-700 range and they're fine. we were prepared to spend more but these met our needs.
I prefer dropped bars but not everyone does. the straight across handle bars go with a more upright position, and but it's harder on the sit bones, IMO. Our bikes have very thin tires, but you can get road bikes with wider, more "tread-y" tires so you can ride on rougher surfaces easily, but not as wide as mt bikes. we did not have trouble with anyone trying to "over sell" us.
Regardless the bike needs to fit. tall, short, long or short legs / shorter torsos/ shorter arms etc but the basic bike needs to "fit" and then some things can be adjusted. by going to a shop you usually get someone who has a clue on size frame / style to start with. Go with the intention of riding so wear appropriate clothes. I'm saying if you want to ride regularly, don't go to Walmart and get a $100 bike off the rack.

Most bike seats have cut outs for men and womens differing anatomy. again, IMO a wider seat is not better. mine is a womens seat and fairly narrow but it depends on what's comfy. if you ride more than 10 miles, padded shorts and padded gloves are great, and a helmet. There are a lot of independent bike shops and well well known brands. the place we went, the trek bikes fit us best and were in the price range we wanted to stay with. HTH!

Josie chime in anytime if I'm overlooking anything.

ttyl, gonna vege now

I couldn't go a week of babysitting without catching a cold. The last two days I have felt terrible. It doesn't help that Luke got 6 mo shots and is cranky and running a fever.

Today Elliot didn't want me to pick her up from preschool. She wanted her mother to take her home. Since they are at same school she sees her mother after class. Good thing the police were not around. They would have though I was kidnapping her the way she yelled. She screamed all the way home and then didn't want to get out of the car. I released the seatbelt and left the door open and let her keep screaming. Our contractor was there in the driveway cutting trim for the bathroom. Elliot eventually came in with him and sat in the bathroom doorway watching him work. I'm glad she has a relatively short attention span for tantrums.

I think we have just been lucky that she has been able to go from my house to daycare to home then back again for the last three years. It is a lot of adjusting to do.

This last week has been terrible for diet. I need to get back on track and not gain weight.

Friday

Good morning,

I will only be working a half day today, I took off this afternoon so I can get ready for our trip to DC. I have laundry to do before I pack, and getting the dogs ready to take to our friends etc.

Garance, I looked at some of that video about the new poem discovered, the makings of a mystery novel! did you see the article about the apartment in Paris that was closed up for 70 years, ( someone paid the rent all that time) and they went in and found a priceless painting? It sounds like you will have a nice long weekend. Who is the next one to go on DWTS?

Valerie, thanks for all the great info on bikes! We have quite a few independently owned bike shops in the area, and that is where I would go to get one, when we are ready. I like to shop where the people know what they are talking about, not just the price of things.

Cathy, get some rest! GrandKidMax is a tough workout. :D

Joan, I don't know how you do it. You are a rock, that's for sure.

Josie, where are you this week?

Later,

Deb, there are few things where the right fit and style matter as much as in a bike. My bike has a smaller frame than DH. he's 5'6" & I'm 5'3". his torso & arms are longer. I can't reach the brakes on his, a fairly key thing! your leg should extend almost fully when pedaling, but not quite. should still be a little bend at the knee. too short, or too long and you can get knee problems. Our friends have the more upright bars and 1.5 inch tires with slightly more tread. they can ride unpaved trails like packed gravel. ours are 1 inch tires and need smooth pavement. I can see a need for 3-4 different bikes!

When we started really looking we were amazed at how many places have bike routes. a bike shop will know. also looking online for local bike clubs will say where people ride.

wow, no cardio today. will do chest triceps and maybe GS legs. yes, it's way beyond my 2 2week limit for doing leg weights so I will probably get sore.

Joan, good luck with that. I'm sorry ... I could not do what you do. not for an hour. I never could deal with children and would have made an awful parent. fortunately I knew that and didn't let anyone try to talk me into anything.

Lynda, there's a traveling Picasso show here at one of the art museums. interesting pics in the paper.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Cathy, and Valerie--

This morning I did Zumba Cardio Party (46 min.).

Yes, it's Mountain Day, so no teaching, and I can recover from a particularly harrowing meeting. It went from 4-6:30 and we still have another meeting next week. I said almost nothing because I am retiring the end of next year, but I watched with horror as the youngest tenured faculty seem to want to throw someone under the bus.

Deb, it's like every year there are more revelations. The creepy part of the poem for me is that after he leaves her (believing she won't commit suicide even though that's what she threatened to do in the letter) he goes off to a rendezvous with another woman and they sleep together in a rented room where he first had sex with Plath 7 years earlier. Surprise, surprise, Monday morning he gets the call, "Your wife is dead." The real shocker for most critics is that we all thought it was just one woman he was seeing when he left Plath, and now it turns out it was two (who knows--maybe more will arrive on the scene.).

Joan, I think you qualify for sainthood. Have you tried Cold-eez? I swear, if you take them at the first sign of a cold, you can either beat it or knock several days off the duration. It worked for me--I basically had a 2-day cold. Of course, the lozenges begin to make me nauseous because I OD on them, but I would rather that than cold misery.

Valerie, I'm glad you are going back to your earlier pedals and toe clips. I have had several bad injuries from falling, and after my elbow, I've become super careful.

Hi to Cathy and Josie!

Hi Ladies,

Sorry for not posting. I took Monday and Wednesday off to spend it with my grandkids.
They left last night. The other 2 days were very busy.

I will be doing my weight training and cardio on Saturday and spinning on Sunday.

Deb and Valerie, I have a road bike by Trek and WITH the drop down handlebars. I love it and I did not have any back pain. Deb, just make sure it is well fitted to your body. I paid $700 for mine. Valerie, regarding the falls, it happened to me a few time, so don't give up on the clips you will get used to them.

Hi Joan, Cathy and Garance.

Have a great weekend!

Josie

i have not worked out for 2 days, so of course i killed myself.

OUCH! gonna be sore tomorrow. did jen's upper body w/1 set of mindy's SS workout mixed in, and then UCB and the 8 m. abs. yep, i'm insane, but that was established a long time ago.

if i can move i may ride this evening,

tomorrow is well, MCB in the am and then!!!!!!!!

SECRETARIAT, THE MOVIE!!!!!!!

i've been waiting for 4 months for this to come out. only time i go to the movies is when a horse movie comes out. LOL! well, not all horse movies, just the ones that aren't hokey, which actually boils down to SEA BISQUIT & SECRETARIAT. so, i do not do movies very often. i remember in '73 watching secretariat win the triple crown, he was and is still the most incredible horse. no other horse has yet beat his track record. i'm kind of a horse freak, can ya tell??? anyone else going to see the movie???????

Cathy, I was listening to some movie reviews this morning and it sounds like Secretariat was 'Disney-fied", simplified to appeal more to kids than adults. Didn't say it was BAD, just geared to a younger crowd. the reviewer mentioned Seabiscuit too, and said that story was much more nuanced and appealed more to adult taste. I will likely see it anyway, but I won't spend theater $$$ on it. Let us all know how it is, I don't trust reviewers but 3 of 3 here said much the same thing.

Josie, I'm not feeling comfortable right now with the cleats so I'm taking a break from them. we can put them back on again if I want in the future. maybe when I ride without them I'll see a drop in speed and efficiency but I'm not motivated to try more now. we've ridden a couple hundred miles and I need to recover.

Lynda, I picked up some cold-eeze while shopping.... thanks for the reminder. I've used zinc before & agree it helps prevent or lessen severity. Off to do a workout or two.

Saturday

Well, I am off...

Make sure someone starts the new thread tomorrow...
