Pentagenarians & beyond: W/B 10/2

Good morning,

Well back to work for this morning, then we have a birthday party at a local restaurant for John's good friend that he roomed with in dental school. They have the same birthday, only John is one year older.

Nothing much else up for the rest of the weekend, only my trip on Sunday early evening. The only good thing about the trip is staying at a Ritz Hotel. Love it. It's also attached to one of the best malls in DC area. not that I am a shopper by any means, but when you are alone in a city, it helps to have something like that to do at night etc.

Anybody have any exciting weekend plans? The weather is supposed to be beautiful here. I think it could be called Indian summer, since we had a frost the other day.

Off to get ready and get something to eat...

We're stuck here for the weekend with DH on call. looks cloudy and rainy anyway. we also have some garden work to catch up on before fall rains start in earnest. the forecast is for another la nina winter, like last year. Ugh. cold and wet and probably snow.

Went to yoga yesterday morning, then a 2 hr bike ride, 20 miles . it was drizzling when we started and I got pretty cold. feet and socks got wet. I have a helmet cover so my head was dry. riding in cold rain takes some gear adjustments. it stopped but once you're wet it's a long process to dry out.

Deb, thanks. I searched "open discussion" for spin bikes... MANY PAGES of links. my first impression about cost was wrong. some spin bikes cost $2500+ but most are much less. so I'm looking locally for a place that carries several models so we can get on one & get an idea of what to look for. I order some things by mail but no way until we get a clue here. I don't want entry level since we tend to be heavy users but don't want top-of-the-line either. DH nixed the idea of buying a turbo trainer and wants a spinbike.
we have an exercise bike at least 30 yrs old and used for warm ups or injury recovery. can't go fast on it. Hopefully we can trade it in.
I used to travel for business a lot and hated the evenings in strange places. I hate shopping too. I was glad when I didn't need to do travel anymore. too easy to eat and drink too much and hard to get exercise. hotel gyms in most run of the mill hotels/motels are a joke. stuff never ever works and never ever gets fixed. I used to read a lot and catch up on work related things.

Hi Deb, Josie, and Valerie--

This morning I did Dancin' Abs (58 min.).

Deb, that's too bad about Keegan. I bet you wish he could talk and tell you how he's feeling. Definitely Indian Summer this weekend, but I don't think the foliage is very pretty this year. It could get better, but Columbus Day weekend is usually when it's at its height. All this rain has had a dulling effect, I think. We're coming up on our 32nd anniversary, so we will be going out for dinner one night this weekend. I still want to see Moneyball and the new George Clooney film, so maybe I will go to a matinee for one of these.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Good morning,

It's supposed to be beautiful weather here all weekend. HouseMax today, and getting clothes ready for tomorrow's trip, but I do go to agility class with Keegan, finally!! I hope he is up for it. I'll try him on a couple of runs, if he doesn't act normal, I won't do it. But I think he will enjoy being away from the "vixen" and having all the attention himself.

Garance, you're right, we have not had any pretty foliage at all, I think the rain did something to the trees, the leaves are falling but no spectacular color showing before. Happy Anniversary! We are coming up to our 27th on the 13th.

Valerie, yes, I will be bringing at least 2 books, actually I am almost done reading one that I was planning on bringing, so I will probably bring my Nook too and can download a book or two from the library before I go. Did you find a spin bike that looks promising? I would think a local sporting goods store would have some that you could try out.

Hi to Joan, Josie & Cathy,

Will check back later.

the forecast of rain and more rain changed. today looks lovely( rain tonight instead) but DH is on call so the best we can do is a bike ride. need to wait until it warms up later this morning.

Did GS back biceps yesterday.

all the looking for a spin bike is going nowhere. can't find a place around here with any. I don't ever ever step foot in Walmart or Sears so I don't look there. It seems people order these unseen and have them delivered. REI has 2 but not in their stores, just online. one person suggested I go to a gym that has spin classes, and do the "tour" as if I wanted to join, and check out the bikes that way. DH feels a separate bike would be better for us than using our street bikes. it would be a major undertaking to haul both bikes up and down to the basement, since neither of us would fit on the other's bike. I don't know how much adjustment goes into getting a spin bike to fit different size people, but gyms have multiple users, so it can't be that complicated.

Deb hope the classes go well for Keegan.

some years the fall colors here are lovely, other years things just get dull and fall to the ground. I always thought a dry fall brought out colors, and the lack of rain & wind lets the leaves stay on longer. we have more conifers here so don't get colors as good as deciduous forests. we have larches ( tamaracks) but so far this is not looking like a good year for them. usually they'd be colorful by now but not happening yet.
