Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 10/18

Thanks.. I'll see if he responds to any of these ideas. I don't feel I'm trying to "motivate" him .... he seems to want to do things and then gets stalled out. He goes to the gym sporadically but does not have a plan. I understand it may not work out, but he is paying for the gym membership and it just sounds like he gets there, and doesn't have a goal or know exactly what to do. most cathe cardio workouts are WAY more than he'll do, but if he wanted to do some weights they are a good way to learn .
when I wanted to start weight training, I didn't know how. I remember pestering the gym employees to 'tell me what to do next". much better to have a plan. he has an ipod so I'll check those things out and see where it goes.

Lori that is hilarious .....''things you can't unsee" but you are so right!!

Good morning,

I hope this day is better than yesterday. I met my friend for lunch, and when I was leaving, I hit one of those concrete lamp posts in the restaurant parking lot, and did a number on the driver side corner of my car... The part of the car that got hit, must have punctured or tore the hose for the windshield washer solution, so all of that came out of the car...I went to the dealer immediately ....$1300.00 damage.... Then when I got home, I was rinsing the coffee pot out and proceeded to break the pot in the sink. I was a walking disaster yesterday apparently.

Judy, You are getting so close to the end of STS! I forget about having the weighted vest, not sure if I could even use it and do a squat with it on anymore. I used a BB for the first time in a while the other day, and it the bone on top of my shoulders, behind my still hurts. I even use pipe wrap on it to cushion it. I think this new volume of Athletic Training from KCM is going to be more geared for adults, but I did not preorder, thinking it was another one for teens like volume one.

Valerie, it's great that you want to help your cousin with getting him to find something he will want to do to for fitness! I hope you find something that he will like. There is nothing easier than walking on a treadmill...then if he does one set of weight exercises for each body part, he should get a good feeling about working out. The app that Judy posted could work for that.

Hi to Josie, Lynda & Lori,

Today we are going to the groomer/breeder friend for our last "lesson". The dogs look great, I hope we are able to keep them looking like this.

Take care,

Hi Ladies,

Went for a 3 mile run this morning and we noticed that we have gotten faster and can hold a conversation without getting winded :). I will train with Karina later and then go visit my DD and hang out with her and her roommate for the rest of the day. Tomorrow I plan to do a spin class and maybe go to the movies.

Lori, you look great in your bikini. I saw people that should have been wearing a tent in Greece, but were wearing bikinis and as you said the images are burnt into my brain ;)

Deb, hope that your day is better today. That was an expensive lunch :(

Valerie, hope that your cousin finds something that he likes and can keep him motivated.

Judy, thank you for the birthday wishes.

Hi to Garance!

Josie

Hi everyone--

This morning I did Flextrain (56:36). It felt good after two days off.

Wow, Lori, you look terrific in that bikini! Va-va-va-voom! It must have been hard coming back to bitterly cold weather, even though it was really only one day. It's mild again here. Great pics.

Deb, I have had days like that, although maybe not so expensive.

Valerie, glad you are discovering what your Ipad can do. Deb's advice is good for starting out with an exercise program. One of KCM's 30 min. weight workouts might be good with three sets of dumbbells--5s, 8s, 12s. Combine that with a 3 mile walk at a good pace with some intervals of upping the pace is also an easy place to begin. If he can't go outside, there's always Leslie's walking dvds, and many of them have little jogging intervals.

Judy, you really did a great job on STS. I remember feeling so pleased with myself the first time through.

Happy birthday Josie!

I went to 4 films in two days in Chatham NY. I liked the last two quite a bit--an Icelandic film titled Rams about two feuding brothers with sheep herds hit by a devastating disease, and 45 a British film about a couple (played by Tom Courtenay and Charlotte Rampling) on the eve of their 45th wedding anniversary. They are rocked by the arrival of a letter telling the husband that the body of a girlfriend who fell into a glacial fissure in the Swiss Alps 50 years ago has been recovered due to the melting glacier (global warming). The film felt very much like an Ingmar Bergman film because the husband had never really told his wife about this girlfriend--that she was also pregnant and they were planning on marrying. It really touches on how fragile even the oldest most intimate relationships can be. The first two films I thought were very confused in tone--especially Mia Madre, which couldn't make up its mind whether it was comic or elegiac--and Louder than Bombs, which had some great actors (Gabriel Byrne, Isabelle Huppert, Jesse Eisenberg, David Strathairn), but I found irritating because I didn't like any of the characters. Huppert you see only in flashback because she has committed suicide. She plays a photographer who frequently leaves her husband and two sons to photograph wars like Iraq, Syria, etc.

I had a great time with my friend. We went to the home of Edna St. Vincent Millay and took a walk on her estate with little postings of her poems along the way. The mini-hike leads to her gravestone and her husband's. She was quite beautiful and something of a rock star in her heyday (who knew you could fill up Hollywood Bowl with a poetry reading??). Her poetry IMO is a bit treacly and cloying, but I guess it worked for people in the 20s and 30s. It probably helped that she was very beautiful. We also went to Hudson and into all of the antique shops. I found a great doorstop--a funny frog lying on his side with a sly smile. It will replace my 15 lb. kettlebell. I wanted this dog, but the price was 300$. The shop owner said, "Roll the dice," so I said I will give you $100, to which he replied, "Too aggressive!" to which I said, "I want a doorstop, not an antique."

Enough blabbing from me. I had fun.

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday I did STS disc 30, Shoulders, Biceps & Triceps; This morning I did Cathe Live HiiT Fit Circuit. That was a good workout! I had to modify a couple of moves but still did most of it. She added a little barre work at the end too, which was challenging.

I got caught up in Back to the Future Day. I only saw the first one when it came out in 1985 so I didn't know the significance of October 21, 2015 until I saw so many posts about it on Facebook. The movies were free with Amazon Prime so I watched Part II and part III yesterday.

Deb-I'm sorry about your bad day :( I've had disaster days too, so I know what you mean.

Lynda-the films you saw sound interesting. Glad you had fun! I like the idea of using a kettlebell for a doorstop.

Josie-it sounds like you are getting faster! Great job!

Hi to Lori & Valerie!

Judy

Oh deb, I've had days like that, where you just want to hide under the covers until tomorrow. sorry about your car... Josie is right.......... expensive lunch! it doesn't take much damage to add up to $1300 these days. how embarrassing though.

I compiled a list of places to "look" at exercises for cousin, and we'll see if he checks anything out. he talks a good show but sometimes his excuses sound like he is really lazy and doesn't want to do the work. it could happen! thank you all for your thoughts and feel free to toss in anything else. Lynda, I looked at KCM's website. Deb has mentioned her so many times and for some reason I never looked. her stuff looks interesting. I could enjoy her workouts I think.

snap decision, we're going back to Yellowstone area a final time this year leaving sunday. so I suddenly got busy. cooking, packing, etc. we will drive our car and rent a house rather than the camper. nights are getting too long for more than a night or maybe 2. camper is too restrictive if it's dark and cold outside for 12+ hours.
anyway, we rode 26 miles on our regular ride on a decent 55-60 degree afternoon. cooler but if you keep doing it, you sort of get used to gradually cooler temps. plus you gradually learn what gear works at what temps, what gets too cold or too warm

today I did flex train and did the whole thing plus core and increased a lot of weights from 5 to 8. I really like that one though I need to pause it a lot. just can't change things up as fast. doing some real push ups but still mostly knee ones. felt good and I felt stronger than the first time.
Judy when I was checking out at the grocery, the checker started going on about back to the future and about how this was the DAY.
I never saw the movie but clearly he was a big fan.

Good morning & Happy Friday!

Well our grooming lessons are finished, and now it is up to us to keep the dogs in a "good coat" so that we do not have to take them to be groomed multiple times a year. It's going to take a little practice, and they may look weird a few times but hey, it's something to work towards. :)

Josie, that is great that you have gained peed in your running. That's exactly what I said to John...."that was a very expensive lunch!"

Lynda, your trip sounds great, and a nice fall outing. A kettlebell would make a great doorstop!

Judy, thanks for the info on Back to the Future and Prime. Another 3 things to add to my Watchlist. :). I did not even know there was any significance to October 21, 2015. I will Google it, because I want to know what it is and not wait to watch the 3 movies etc.

Valerie, nice job on Flex Train, that is one of Cathe's really good ones. "Renting a house"....now that is my kind of camping! Have fun!

Hi to Lori,

Going to my friend's for lunch and a marathon TV watch of the last few episodes of Mad Men.

Take care,

Deb, it gets more practical this time of year. Our camper isn't set up for winter. if our water supply freezes, things break! at home we drain the system so not a worry. camping without water is rough. nights are long now. it's not a giant motor home. we could find a place with hookups to stay, solving the water and lights problem, but that doesn't help the "cramped" part. not a lot of room. when one person is up, the other needs to sit. for short local trips we use it all year, but it's freezing now in Yellowstone. so we indulge ourselves and rent a house near the park.

do you plan on doing the hair clipping yourself on the doggies? I'll bet getting them to sit still is tough.

DH thinks cousin is just making excuses about exercise. I know his wife isn't interested. she's lucky..... Asian, small boned, slim figure, out- eats all of us and weighs maybe 120 with no effort at all. Cousin used to be thin, but gained weight and has health issues, many that would go away if he lost 20 lbs and was slightly more active. He bought an expensive bike but barely uses it after the initial flurry of activity. can't get wife on a bike which would help as something they could do together. he's retired and she still works full time so he has a lot of time and the gym is a stones throw away. so I did my best, we'll see what happens.

we finished the last season of HOC. interesting. our next is Homeland, not a favorite for me but will try to keep a good attitude.
Josie somewhere I think I missed that it's your birthday. Happy birthday, enjoy the day.

we streamed part of the Bengazi hearings yesterday...about an hours worth. Wow. HRC was great. calm and composed. can't believe it went on for 11 hours. the R's looked /sounded ridiculous.... I can't believe how much money we've spent on a political witch hunt.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did All Out Low Impact Hiit with core 1 (49:22).

Valerie, I love Flextrain too. It's so great that you can get in one more trip to Yellowstone. I have to admit that I found the Benghazi hearings live on Huffington Post yesterday afternoon, thought I would watch a little bit, and then became mesmerized by how awful this political sideshow was. Then, when I turned on the TV after dinner, it was still on!!! HRC was beginning to lose her voice and Trey Gowdy (who looks a bit like that Martin Short character on SNL--Ed Grimley--with the cowlick), was positively sweating bullets and ranting at her. 11 hours of being grilled and you're right, HRC did not lose her composure.

Judy, I really liked the Back to the Future films. I remember taking my then 3-year-old to see some animated feature--The Black Cauldron?--and it was clear that it was going to be too scary for him, so I asked the manager if there was something else, and we walked in on the first BTTF film, and my son loved it, even so young.

Deb, are you watching the final half-season of MM? I never did get into it, and it's not on Amazon Prime. I remember hearing that the final episode was very satisfying for some reason.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Just checking back in momentarily... Lynda, I was sure you'd watch some of the hearings if you could... Trey Gowdy looks like a skinny white lab rat...... I would have watched more... what a circus. I could not believe how long she was up there.

Lori. you are lucky you did your Mexico trip when you did. this hurricane looks like it's going to be awful. the strongest storm EVER? Alaska Air flew down an empty plane from seattle this morning to bring people home.

I don't know why I like Flextrain so much.... no dread/fear factor of any particular move. not that it's easy. I don't do those tricep pushups very well. my elbows go outward. I have issues with keeping dumbbells straight when lifting too, so I think it's a quirk of how my arms/shoulders are put together rather than bad technique.

Good morning & Happy Weekend.

So we watched the last 4 episodes of Mad Men, season 7. Neither of us had watched it on regular TV or any other streaming thing. We got the DVD's out of the library...it took a while for the library to have them. I was not that impressed with the ending...kind of "meh"...what did anyone else think?

Glad that hurricane has moved down to a category 2 I guess....it sounded pretty scary for a while there.

Valerie, I think the idea of renting a house is a great one for this time of year. I hope your cousin starts with something...anything to get moving a bit.

Lynda, the final episode of MM...left you not really knowing what happened....not my kind of satisfying ending. I wish it was more of a definite thing...it is one that leaves it to the viewer to imagine what happened. My friend and I thought he was possibly going to jump off a building in Manhattan..kind of like the guy has done for 7 seasons in the opening .....well that didn't happen.

Hi to Josie, Judy, and Lori,

We are leaving in a bit for Farmington NY (near Canandaigua) today to show the dogs in an Obedience trial. Wish me luck. :)

Have a great weekend!

Good morning from Cape Cod!

I feel like such the traveler lately. We are having a great time and been doing good with my workouts. Thursday at work our lunch workout was two Susan Bowens. Both tough and everyone was screaming at me. But when done they all agreed they loved it! Friday I did a Cathe Live Express workout. Can't remember the name it was cardio then weights (i used her blue band and it worked well). Today will be Kickboxing and Barre.

So glad we missed the storm in Mexico. We met several people from England while there. They are still there and have texted us to let us know Cancun is fine and will only receive the tail in.

Deb....so terrible about your car! So expensive to fix repairs. So sorry this happened!

Valerie...have a great trip! Sounds like you have done all you can for your cousin. It is now up to him. I like Flex Train too. Although it has been a while since I have done this one.

Lynda...the poet's home sounds lovely. Funny you had a kettlebell for a door stopped. I am sure the frog is much cuter!

Judy...We love all The Back to the Future movies. A few years back I bought them all on Blueray. If they are on TV I'll always watch them. They were just silly fun movies.

Josie..great job running faster! Great to be able to hold a conversation! Happy Birthday!

I have a meeting to go to this morning for our Time Share then the afternoon will be swimming and whatever the kids want to do. We have reservations tonight at the Brazilion Grill and we are looking forward to it.

Have a great weekend all!

Good morning. we have most of our stuff ready to go. it will be way colder than last time so lots of clothes. also lots of food. I'm not a restaurant fan, plus there's nothing nearby, so I have food/meals planned down to the details. I don't want to spend half a day shopping there.

Spoiler alert... I'm still waiting for the last episodes of MM. don't know how it ends, other than "meh" . not surprised. No worries Deb, that's how I'd describe most of MM. I want to finish it out but not a favorite. this series always seems "flat" to me. never got to know or like anyone.

Deb, hope your doggies are on good behavior today.

We did our 26 mile trail ride yesterday, partly sunny and again 55-60 so pleasant but cooler than summer.

Sounds like the hurricane downgraded immediately and is not the monster storm expected. Still, that would mess up a vacation plans for sure.

Have not heard from cousin so I think he is not interested. DH has talked to him several times, no mention. It would help him to have a focus other than his health issues, but I will not mention this again unless he brings it up. we take them hiking sometimes but have to limit the choices to easy trails we know they can do. Lori, I'll bet he would be like your co workers..... if we could work out with him, he'd do it, but left to himself, he won't do it alone.

Josie, you are inspiring me to get back on the treadmill. as hiking season winds down, I need to add running back in. our rides take about 2 hrs 15 minutes but it doesn't work legs the same as walking or running.

ETA I'm thinking it was Lynda and Deb who recommended 5 Days... Tried last night but could not get subtitles on it. Tried for a bit anyway but could not understand much of the dialogue. we tried for subtitles, and also for CC but neither came up. were you able to get them do you remember?
